This is my new favorite channel! The way you talk about movies leaves me feeling "Wow, movies ARE cool," as if it were a thought I'm having for the first time even though I've loved film for a long time. All that to say, thank you for sharing your incredible analysis and knowledge with us all!
My favorite type of social commentary in movies is where the viewers are practically introducing it to the movie itself, a film that can suggest certain ideas but can also have viewers that don’t even realize that there is a subtext or something going on, and can still be entertained by the movie.
On the subject of appreciating art on a certain level due to an abundance of knowledge or lack there of, differences in taste could play a more significant role, rather than reliant on a scale of intelligence
I'm a film lover and also a hobbyist filmmaker, and my enjoyment has only increased over time as I have written, directed, and shot my little mediocre films. Knowing how the sausage is made lends an appreciation to things other audience members don't catch. I watched _Psycho_ for the 800th time the other day, and I found myself marvelling at Joseph Stefano's skilled use of situational behaviours to reveal character, without direct exposition. By the time Marion Crane steals the money and heads out of town, we know everything we need to know about her motivations, her character, her strengths, weaknesses, and flaws - and we did not have to be told any of it. Yes, Hitch had something to do with it, and Janet Lee had to ultimately carry the water, but if Stefano had not written it, first, the rest would not have mattered.
Great channel, great content. You are an all around awesome person and one of my favorite UA-cam personalities. Please don’t ever stop. Congratulations on 29k🥳🎉😍🥰😘❤️👍🏻
Before my experience learning and then later teaching and writing music, I asked the same question about losing the sublime mystique which drew me into music. I think two things happened. Some of that magic when *listening* to music went away, and my mind become conditioned to actively listen and try to pick apart each piece of music I listened to. But the way I still experience that mystique is to look and listen internally in a creative work. I think once we have the tools to create, we can’t quite scratch the itch without switching into creative mode.
Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born is definitely flawed, especially in the technical department, but a lot of people love that movie simply for the emotional aspect of it. I was emotionally moved by that film on a level that I hadn’t experienced in a while. Also I thought Sam Elliot’s performance was incredible. He was the heart of that film
Hey, I just wanted to say, that I discovered your channel yesterday, because I searched for a review for Antichrist, that did tackle the same questions I was asking myself. I found your video on it and since them am binging this channel, while procrastinating my university work. You have really interesting ideas and had to subscribe
If you're a creative person, I find film trailers to be a great way to get...into the mood of some certain creative idea. Like, trailers are a concentrated hit of intense creative energy, and they can unlock all manner of ideas for your own projects. I watch them all the time when I'm coming up with new things. If that makes sense. :)
Spot on with your thoughts on Kirk and Picard. I'd love to see a vid on any of the Trek movies, even though they're more known for their social commentary rather than their aesthetics. (Same goes for Planet of the Apes - one of the most radical mainstream movies ever made).
Passion of Joan of Arc is a perfect movie - apart from the bizarre, superfluous action scene at the end. Every time I watch that movie I forget the scene even exists until it happens. Just in case you thought it was only modern people who made such decisions. What genius thought up Passion of Joan of Arc, and then thought "But what we totally need is an insanely kick-ass, balls to the wall action thrillride at the end...just to get asses in seats."
Laughton a slam dunk! My favorite. If you haven't seen it, check out all the outtakes from the Criterion editon and how he directed, and also, the soundtrack (which on here but we can't put a link) but it's more of a radio play of it with Laughton narrating.
Thank you for all the cool vids. I like that you mentioned Passion of Joan of Arc and Casablanca; I may have to revisit them. I always appreciate your perspective. Really!
On the topic of commentary in films, I tend to find that perspective is key as to whether it works or not. I share your disgust at Hollywood commentary films like Crash, Green Book, Zero Dark Thirty etc as they are made by people who in trying to appear to be righteous, yet by doing so betray their flimsy or non-existent understanding of the socio-economic issues they are using to do so. To quote Dan Olson of Folding Ideas, they're trying to be impressive without being vulnerable, and in the most crass manner as well. I personally love comment and relevance when I feel it comes from an informed perspective, whether that be one of personal experience or even just thorough research. As a personal example, I'm autistic and I've never felt represented by film and tv because all autistic characters I've seen tend to either be offensive, burdensome, backwards, 'problems to be solved' mockeries, or more commonly, a condescending hyper-smart (usually at maths or computers) but socially inept (which is then played for laughs) cliché. Both of these stereotypes come from an uninformed, and either directly ableist or pedestal placing but not actually listening perspective that only end up speaking over and/or silencing the voices of autistic people like myself. This is why my dream is to make a film that accurately portrays the autistic experience, without the filter of Hollywood's glamourizing and/or patronizing bullshit.
i found your point about a critics view vs a movie fans view very apt ad reminded me when i shared how brilliant i thought 8 and a half by fellini was with friends and they found the movie dry and uninteresting - do you experience the same and are thankful that your greater knowledge of movies enables you to delve deeper into the interpretation of what you are seeing and experiencing
Yeah _Night Of The Hunter_ is phenomenal _The Hired Hand_ whilst not on the same level, is still a pretty decent offering from an Actor/Director and of course _Unforgiven,_ almost forgot _Trees Lounge_
Standout trailers for me include DARK CITY, STAR WARS EPISODE I, Star Trek reboot, ALIEN 3, STARSHIP TROOPERS, THE TWO TOWERS, and the most recent and among the best ever is the latest one for DUNE.
Movie premiere for me would definitely be the Exorcist! Must have been nuts from some of the reports That come out of cinemas ( in the U.K. anyways) haha :)
@6:11: Speaking of Stravinsky's premiere of "The Rite of Spring" ... You're going to love Jan Kounen's *"Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky"* (2009), starring *Anna Mouglalis* and *Mads Mikkelsen* as the titular characters!
It just happens to be the 50th anniversary of both of their deaths this year, so it would be fitting. *Bonus:* Plus it's fun to hear *Mads Mikkelsen* , a Danish-speaking actor, *speaking French with a Russian accent!* But due to the particular plot sequences, you may chose to first check out Anna Fontaine's "Coco Before Chanel", which also came out the same year as it's spiritual "prequel", starring Audrey Tautou.
PS: I also fantasize about being in the audience of that first premiere in Paris... then, I rehearse as to how I'd react : like an avant-garde artist cheering him on or a bourgeois Parisian acting all "offended"! Then I picture myself, coyly introducing the two main characters to one another, just to see how they behave!
I really would like to go back to the time when "The Exorcist" premiered, But I would also like to forget all the horror movies that I have seen coz Only then I would really be able to tell whether it was scary or not
Of course you wouldn't like A Star Is Born The Bradley Cooper And Lady Gaga version shock horror!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Guess you would simply class that movie as Oscar bait f**ksake. Not surprising at all why people liked it, the performances were just great the editing the music performed by the two leads, the lead character Jackson Maine's struggle with Alcohol abuse were handled in a very raw and honest and emotional way i felt his pain in the movie and was moved by the fact his relationship with Ally couldn't save him. Coopers performance was so f**king moving and Lady Gaga surprised me with her performance Sam Elliot great as well was impressed by the fact Bradley cooper did all his own singing sounding vulnerable as he sang as well especially towards the very end when he sings by the piano never felt he was just belting out the songs there was emotion behind it ,distaste for that whatever, i guess the movie wasn't Avant Garde enough for you not enough Tarkovsky like scenes of long monologues about pain and suffering in dark rooms filled with rain and puddles.....
Hey Maggie, Big fan! Would you ever consider an OnlyFans account? Maybe somehow incorporating your dancing and artistry somehow... Just an idea. Love the channel!
A premiere I would like to have attended would have been the one for Howard Hughes "Hell's Angels" at Grauman's Chinese theater. ua-cam.com/video/sGbBWsYxhl0/v-deo.html
Which means that you're either here because of that exclusively and are projecting big time, which is pathetic, or you just camere here to be an asshole and post a snide comment that sounds clever to no one but you, which is even more pathetic.

I agree with all your 'perfect film' choices. I would throw in Tokyo Story, Citizen Kane, Au Hazard Balthazar and 2001: A Space Odyssey
Citizen Kane and Au Hazard balthazar- Art 2001 A Space Odyssey and Tokyo Story- not even entertaining

The trailer for Judas and the Black Messiah was incredible
Unfortunately the film wasn't quite as incredible 😔
On the topic of premieres, I feel the same as you. I'd go back to a live event like Nureyev and Fontyen dancing for the first time.
The trailer for Alien is great. I can easily spend a whole day just watching movie trailers.
That's weird.
