Thank you so much for this informative and detailed explanation! I’m so glad I ran into this video as I plan to visit Kyushu but I wasn’t too sure which JR Kyushu pass I should purchase. I’m very ecstatic to visit Japan again and looking forward to what Kyushu has to offer! Also, I just subscribed to your channel!
Hi @rjstones2517, thank you for the comment! Glad that you found the video useful! Kyushu has lots to offer, just like the other parts of Japan, so remember to some research before going, and make some good memories while you are there!
I just bought the Sanyo northern Kyushu jr pass and unable to make reservations on the jr Kyushu side 😢only able to make reservations for the Shinkansen but not the limited express
Need advise for 10 day trip to Kyushu for seniors about 60 yrs old. Is it possible to base in Fukuoka for the whole duration while visiting other cities on day trips?
Hi @nulaohapoonrungsi1526, no problem! Glad that you found it useful! I plan to share more of my travel experiences and tips in my future videos too, so stay tuned!
Thanks for the detail explanation video. Can I seek your advice on this question? I bought 5 days JR Kyushu Rail Pass for my family. I want to check whether is it really necessary to book reserved seat for all my train rides that I planned? Can I just use my ride pass to enter the platform and board train under non-reserved seat?
Hi. Thank you for the informative video. Just for clarification, as a tourist, when i visit japan in march of this year, i can buy the JR Kyushu rail pass when i arrive in fukuoka, particularly in hakata station? Tia.
I will visit for 7-10 days in mid November I'm looking for sample itineraries with an emphasis on culture and nature. Very interested in hiking and Onsen as well as amazing local food
Hi @88digitalelf, thanks for the question! Yes, there are luggage racks and spaces on both the Relay-Kamome (Hakata > Takeo-onsen) and Kamome (Takeo-onsen > Nagasaki)! (Source: I was personally on both the Relay-Kamome and Kamome (Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen) earlier this week.)
Hi Jay If i book my JR PASS from KLOOK KLOOK emailed an exchange order with KRP Reservation No Can I use this KRP Reservation No to "grab" reserve seats through JR Seat Reservation website?
Thank you for the detailed explanation. I am still confused with seat reservation with the pass. I understand I can purchase a ticket as soon as I have purchased the pass. To my knowledge I can reserve a seat online a month in advance, thus I am guaranteed a good seat. With the Pass, I cannot reserve seats until I am personally in Japan, right? In my case, I will be purchasing the pass at the Oita Airport. I need to travel from Yufuin to Hakata the next day. Does it mean I have to get the ticket at the Yufuin station on the day of travel? I may not be able to get a good seat or to get a reserved seat at all if by that time the train is full, right? Not to mention having to stand in lines and not able to speak the language. Is my understanding correct? Our trip is in two weeks, flight tickets and hotels all booked. I am deciding whether to get the pass or not get the pass. It is so stressful!
Hi, thanks for the informative video. We will rent a car and drive for most of our kyushu trip. But on day 7 we plan to take the shinkansen from Kumamoto to Kagoshima. Then spend day 8 and 9 in Kagoshima exploring. Then day 10 take Shinkansen from Kagoshima to Fukuoka. Would you recommend us to buy individual JR tickets?
Hi @tiffy623, thanks for the question! Hope I am not too late for this! Kumamoto to Kagoshima-chuo via Kyushu Shinkansen (Reserved Seat): 6,870 JPY Kagoshima-chuo to Hakata via Kyushu Shinkansen (Reserved Seat): 10,640 JPY (All prices are estimates. Source: Navitime.) 3-Day JR Kyushu Rail Pass (All-Kyushu): 20,000 JPY/adult (There's an ongoing promotion until 31 Mar 2024 if you buy it via the JR Kyushu Rail Pass Online Booking website. The 3-Day JR Kyushu Rail Pass (All-Kyushu) is at 19,000 JPY/adult under this promotion.) Hence, if you are buying the Pass just for these 2 journeys, it is not worth it since the main journeys are just 17,510 JPY. However, if you are also taking other JR lines during your 3 days in Kumamoto/Kagoshima/Fukuoka or if you want to pay extra for the flexibility the Pass offers, then it MAY be worth it. For your consideration. Hope it is useful!
Hi, how about the JR Kushu mobile pass? I can't find any other info about it. I hope you can make one :) i really need to know i f i can use for the YUFU train and YUFUIN no mori going to YUfuin floral village.
Uh, if I wanna book some express limited train seats I gotta buy the pass early to book them no? Or did I need to wait until I got the actual ticket to be able to book seats on limited express? I’m looking to book the yufuin no mori which sells out in 1-2 days after they open.
Hi @pamelachiang3309, thank you for the comment! Yes, you can take the Shinkansen with a JR Kyushu Rail Pass. However, you can only take the Shinkansen WITHIN the area of the Pass. (See 05:13) For example, with the All-Kyushu variation, you can take both the Kyushu Shinkansen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen.
Thanks for this. Some questions: 1. Can we use the North pass to get to Huis Ten Bosch and Tosu Outlet? 2. Where is the best area to see autumn foliage? 3. What is the range of the weather during the last week of October to first week of November? 4. What train cards should we be buying apart from JR pass? 5. Can I have a sample itinerary please? We’re planning to do Huis Ten Bosch, Nanzoin Temple, Yatai Stalls, Kushida Shrine; maybe Maizuru park and ohori park and Tosu Premium Outlet
Hi @maryannerivera9896, thanks for the questions! However, I do not provide personalized travel planning services, so I will answer only the questions related to the theme of this video. (1) Huis Ten Bosch is in Nagasaki Prefecture and Tosu Premium Outlet is in Saga Prefecture, and both prefectures are in North Kyushu. Hence, you can make use of the JR Kyushu Rail Pass (Northern Kyushu) to visit these 2 places. (4) I will be preparing a video introducing the different IC cards and their functions in the future. Meanwhile, you can refer to this video to see what IC card you should purchase, depending on which airport you land in: ua-cam.com/video/5wyIWegSLVo/v-deo.html. (5) It depends on various factors (How many days you are in Japan? What form of transport you are using to move around? When are you going? The size and type of group you are traveling with? What is your travel style? etc.) However, it seems that you already have some specific locations in your list, so you can just arrange them in a plan that suits your needs. :)
Hi, we are taking a slow leisure tour of kyushu for 3 weeks. Is it feasible to buy this rail pass with its limited time frame? How would you recommend we travel with public transport throughout Kyushu? limited
Thank you so much for the explanation. Is it possible for me take JR pass from Hakata to Beppu Oita station? During my 7days stay in Beppu, can I use this pass go to Yufuin and Oita city? Thanks alot
Hi @fifiwong3940, thank you for the question. The nationalwide Japan Rail Pass, and the JR Kyushu Rail Pass (All-Kyushu and Northern Kyushu only) explained in this video covers the journey between Hakata, Beppu, Oita and Yufuin stations as well.
So informative, I am going to Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima, this coming March and thinking of getting JR Kyushu pass, however, here is a question. Although I will only focus on these three prefectures I am thinking of getting only Southern Part of the Kyushu JR Kyushu Pass from the station at Fukuoka right? And I can get on to Shinkansen to go to Kagoshima?? I am looking at a 7 hour Shinkansen ride from Tokyo to Kagoshima Chuo station which cost about 16500Yen gets Kagoshima first then buy JR Kyushu Pass to go to Kumamoto and Fukuoka. What do you think? I am thinking of getting Sun Q Pass - a bus pass like hop on and hop off.
Hi @jeigan1628, thank you for the question! There is an additional charge of 1,000 JPY (half-price for children) for making seat reservations online using the JR Kyushu Rail Pass. For more details, you can refer to this link: www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/railpass/railpass.html#anchor-reservations.
Thanks for the detailed explanation in this video. I may not have understood this but if I have the JR Kyushu Southern pass and would like to take the Yufuin No Mori train, if I reserve seats for that, will there be an extra charge?
Hi @kuhvalentin, thanks for the question! First of all, the Yufuin No Mori train only runs between Hakata (Fukuoka) and Beppu (Oita), which means it is out of the coverage area of the JR Kyushu Rail Pass (Southern Kyushu) as both prefectures are in Northern Kyushu. Hence, you will need to pay the full fare for this train if you have this Pass. However, if you have the JR Kyushu Rail (Northern Kyushu or All-Kyushu), you can reserve seats on this train. (Additional fees such as online booking fees are separately charged.) Hope this helps! (Source: www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/railpass/railpass.html)
Very helpful! Thank you very much. Can we reserve for oversized baggage using the JR North Kyushu pass? I was wondering if I should just leave my oversized luggage in Fukuoka or bring it with me in Nagasaki. I'll be staying in Fukuoka then Nagasaki for 3 days, then fly back in Fukuoka. Thank you very much. Arigato!
Hi @azwraith8252, thanks for the question. Yes, you can! You can reserve a seat with a space in the oversized baggage area using the JR Kyushu Rail Pass (all variations) on the Shinkansen. I think it depends on whether you need the luggage in Nagasaki or not..maybe you have some things (eg. clothes, camera equipment) which you need in Nagasaki, or you are planning to buy a lot of souvenirs back from Nagasaki. If it gets too heavy and it becomes a burden to bring it back to Fukuoka, you can always forward your luggage from Nagasaki to Fukuoka. (Check with the hotel staff for more details.) Just my opinion. Hope it helps!
Hi, what if i want to take a non reserved seat train? should i just get in the station and hop on the train? or is there anything i should get before hand? thank you
Hi @Dwarmmq, thanks for the question! If you are trying to take trains with cars with non-reserved seats (eg. the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen), the short answer is yes, you can just get in through the ticket gates and board the non-reserved seating cars. (However, you might not be able to find seats and have to stand.) However, I would recommend you to get reserved seats in advance (10 mins before the train departure time is considered 'in advance' too!) to secure your place and enjoy a comfortable ride. ^_^
Hi @joelsongco8610, thanks for the question! I think you are refering to the JR Kyushu Rail Pass, right? The local JR Chikuhi Line runs through Itoshima City in Fukuoka, and both the Northern and All-Kyushu variations of the JR Kyushu Rail Pass covers that line. However, the Airport Line which connects the JR Chikuhi Line and Hakata Station is run by Kyushu Subway (a non-JR company). Hence, that journey on the Airport Line is not covered. You can see which line starts and ends where when you search for your journey on Google Maps. (Sample: maps.app.goo.gl/9iAtGLkCyfrEC3c67) In any case, if you are heading to a specific place in Itoshima, you will need to make a transfer after entering Itoshima City via JR trains to another form of transportation. Hope my answer helps!
Hello can you help me create an schedule for 6 days using all kyushuu rail pass? I'm going to Japan this 2st week of july. My hotel is base in Fukuoka.
Hi. What is your opinion with regards to renting a car for a family of 5 to travel around the region instead of procuring the all Kyushu rail pass? Thanks 😊
Hi @dennislim5597, thanks for your comment! My opinion on the mode of transport within the Kyushu region would be (1) It depends on which areas within the region you are traveling to. Some urban areas such as Hakata are well-equipped with public transportation, so it may not be necessary to drive around. (In fact, it may be more inconvenient or expensive as you have to deal with traffic, find parking, etc.) However, driving in some areas such as Miyazaki and Saga prefectures may be better to explore the area as the places of interest are located farther from each other and the frequency of public transportation is not high. (2) It also depends on preferences as well. Some people prefer to take public transport so they don't have to focus on the road or deal with driving fatigue (especially if you are the sole driver in the group), while some people prefer to drive and enjoy the freedom of stopping anytime and anywhere they want. I am comparing between driving and public transport as this is the main choices you have highlighted. Unless your itinerary is centered on the JR Kyushu Rail Pass, my opinion is that the Pass is supposed to make your journey cheaper and should only be considered after you decided on a mode of transport. Hope my opinion helps!
Veey informative video. I just purchased the 7-day JR Kyushu Pass and I have a question regarding making reservations. I noticed there is a fee to make seat reservations online. Does JR Kyushu charge a fee if I go directly to the ticket office to make seat reservations? Thank you.
Very well explained! some questions remain: When I entered Japan in HND, I got a sticker "landing permission - temporary visitor" does this qualify as the "visa stamp" you talked about ? = is this good enough to get a rail pass ? and 2nd: Can you buy the railpass with open dates or do they have to be fixed before you come ? I would like the idea to have a train pass that I can activate by myself in the country. arigato -gozaimas!
Hi @JO-nh6mo, thank you for the questions! (1) Yes, that sticker is the physical visa! (If you passed through the automatic gates, there would not be a sticker or anything new on the pages of your passport.) You will need that as a physical proof to qualify for such privileges for foreign tourists, such as getting the JR Kyushu Rail Pass. (This is a sample of how it looks like: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Japan_Landing_Permission_90_Days_2011.jpg) (2) When you buy the Exchange Order voucher for a rail pass, the start dates are not fixed. (ie. The dates are open.) The actual point of time where you have to declare the start date would be when you are exchanging your voucher for the actual rail pass in Japan at a ticket office or ticket machine. (Typically, the start date has to be within 30 days from the point of exchange, but you will need to check this in the terms and conditions of your Exchange Order voucher.) Hope this helps!
Hello! Can I ask, if I can only get my JR Kyushu Pass when I reach Japan, how do I book the scenic train rides months in advance? Does this mean I have to pay when I reserve online? And cannot use the JR pass to cover that expense?
Hi @Elsy1178, thanks for the question! If you purchase your JR Kyushu Rail Pass via the KR Kyushu Online Booking website, you can sign in using the Kyushu Rail Pass / MCO No. and make reservations for trains up to 30 days in advance, even before receiving the physical Pass in Japan. This includes the scenic trains such as the 36+3 and Yufuin no Mori. (The tickets for these trains are only open for reservations 30 days in advance as well.) You can check out the detailed procedures to make such reservations via this link to the JR Kyushu Rail Pass Online Booking website: www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/booking/manual.html. Hope it helps!
Will the JR Kyushu (All Kyushu, Northern, and Southern) Pass price increase like the other JR passes? We are planning on purchasing a Northern Kyushu Pass and the price seems really good compared to point-to-point tickets. But, the price increases for other passes make them not such a good value any more. Do you have info about this? Thanks!
Hi @erincraig2960, thanks for the question! You can see the news as announced by JR Kyushu here in this video: ua-cam.com/video/UH-mt4WqFzQ/v-deo.html. Hope you find this useful!
@hifzhanfazfauzi8196, thank you for your request! I will add that to my production plan. However, the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen is estimated to be completed in Spring 2024, which will mean that the train passes covering that area may change their terms of use, so this video might only arrive next year.
Thank you , so well explained ! 👍👍👍
Hi @helentan659, thank you for the comment!

Hi @arare5678!

Please make a video explaining JR Kansai-Hiroshima Pass. Thanks.
@gridlock2120, thank you for the request! I will add that to my production plan!
Hi, great video. Do you know if the Relay-Kamome trains (from Hakaka to Nagasaki) have luggage racks? Thanks.
So both the Northern & Southern end cover Kagoshima?
Hi there. Thank you for the comment.
For Kagoshima, only the Southern Kyushu and All-Kyushu Variation covers the journey there.
Hi Jay
If i book my JR PASS from KLOOK
KLOOK emailed an exchange order with KRP Reservation No
Can I use this KRP Reservation No to "grab" reserve seats through
JR Seat Reservation website?
Thank you for the detailed explanation. I am still confused with seat reservation with the pass. I understand I can purchase a ticket as soon as I have purchased the pass. Kagoshima-chuo to Hakata via Kyushu Shinkansen (Reserved Seat): 10,640 JPY

3-Day JR Kyushu Rail Pass (All-Kyushu): 20,000 JPY/adult
(There's an ongoing promotion until 31 Mar 2024 if you buy it via the JR Kyushu Rail Pass Online Booking website. The 3-Day JR Kyushu Rail Pass (All-Kyushu) is at 19,000 JPY/adult under this promotion.)

I am curious how much is the Northern Kyushu JR pass if I buy it in Japan. I tried google-ing it but it only says it is more expensive in Japan.
I'm a bit confused. So you can take Shinkansen with a JR Kyushu ALL pass?
Hi @pamelachiang3309, thank you for the comment!
Yes, you can take the Shinkansen with a JR Kyushu Rail Pass.
However, you can only take the Shinkansen WITHIN the area of the Pass. (See 05:13)

You're welcome!
Hi! Can I make seat reservations online with the 7-day All Kyushu Rail Pass without additional charges? Thanks in advance.
(Additional fees such as online booking fees are separately charged.)
Hope this helps!
(Check with the hotel staff for more details.)
Just my opinion.
(However, you might not be able to find seats and have to stand.)
However, I would recommend you to get reserved seats in advance (10 mins before the train departure time is considered 'in advance' too!) to secure your place and enjoy a comfortable ride. ^_^
If I buy Nothern Kyushu rail pass online, Can I reserve seat one month in advance before arriving in Japan ?
Hi@kensutanto2809, thanks for the question. Yes, you can!
Can I use the JR pass to get to Itoshima?
(Sample: maps.app.goo.gl/9iAtGLkCyfrEC3c67)
In any case, if you are heading to a specific place in Itoshima, you will need to make a transfer after entering Itoshima City via JR trains to another form of transportation.
Hope my answer helps!
Hello can you help me create an schedule for 6 days using all kyushuu rail pass?
I'm going to Japan this 2st week of july. My hotel is base in Fukuoka.
Hi there!
Unfortunately, we do not provide custom itinerary planning schedule services.
Hope you had a great trip!
Thank youfor tips arigato gozaimashita
No problem! Hope you found it useful.
Hi. What is your opinion with regards to renting a car for a family of 5 to travel around the region instead of procuring the all Kyushu rail pass? Thanks 😊
Hi @dennislim5597, thanks for your comment!
My opinion on the mode of transport within the Kyushu region would be
(1) It depends on which areas within the region you are traveling to.
Thank you.
Hi @88digitalelf, thank you for the comment.
It is free to make seat reservations directly at the ticket office. :)
(This is a sample of how it looks like: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Japan_Landing_Permission_90_Days_2011.jpg)
(2) When you buy the Exchange Order voucher for a rail pass, the start dates are not fixed. (ie. The dates are open.)
The actual point of time where you have to declare the start date would be when you are exchanging your voucher for the actual rail pass in Japan at a ticket office or ticket machine. (Typically, the start date has to be within 30 days from the point of exchange, but you will need to check this in the terms and conditions of your Exchange Order voucher.)
Hope this helps!
(The tickets for these trains are only open for reservations 30 days in advance as well.)
You can check out the detailed procedures to make such reservations via this link to the JR Kyushu Rail Pass Online Booking website: www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/booking/manual.html.
Hope it helps!
Thank you so much! That has cleared a lot of doubts I had ☺️🙏🏻
No problem, glad that I helped! :)
😊😊😊👏👏👏👍👍👍
Hokuriku please
@hifzhanfazfauzi8196, thank you for your request! I will add that to my production plan.
However, the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen is estimated to be completed in Spring 2024, which will mean that the train passes covering that area may change their terms of use, so this video might only arrive next year.
