One thing I learned with Takeo Onsen station, if you decide to get off, you can also have a special saga beef bento box with kalbi or sukiyaki versions. It costs a little more, but it was really good. It is in the Kairodo Cafe in the station, and there is a limited number of them available. This ekiben has won the Kyushu ekiben grand prix three years running.
It always happens on the shinkansen! 😅 But thankfully you can see views at some points too - although I think the views on the Relay Kamome are more scenic.
This was such a useful video. I was planning to travel from Hakata to Nagasaki by express bus because I'm a bit intimidated by the thought of taking a train (having had some scary experiences taking trains out of Tokyo) but I'm encouraged to do so after watching this. Thank you!
I love Shinkansen (and train travel in Japan in general). When in Tokyo, we usually get a plattform ticket at "Tokyo station", so that we can spend 1-3 hours on the rail tracks and enjoy the Shinkansen coming into the station, being cleaned, being refulled, and than leaving again. I guess I am a train geek ;-).
I was in Kyushu last year, and very much enjoyed it there. Every place we visited there was so amazing. And in 3 weeks there, we saw almost no other western tourists.
It's always exciting when you're on the train around Tokyo Station / Ueno and you catch a glimpse of all different bullet trains running alongside the tracks! I love Kyushu - there are so many interesting places!
Hello C n F Good to hear from you again We are planning our 3rd trip to Japan in October and your video about the new Shinkansen is a heads up. Looking forward to ride from Fukuoka to Nagasaki Cheers
@@kapilachandrabharathi7134 Sounds good! There are so many great day trips you can do from Fukuoka. The shinkansen makes it so quick to get around that side of Kyushu.
I was in Kyushu in 07 when the Shinkansen line to Kagoshima was partly complete. I had to take a "Relay Tsubame" (class 787) from Hakata to Shin-Yatsushiro to catch the Tsubame Shinkansen train to Kagoshima-Chuo. As I recall, the class 800 train had 2+2 seating in all cars and no green car. While riding the Relay, I could see the remaining segment of the Shinkansen under construction. While in Kyushu, I also rode a couple of the 885s you did on the Relay and they're among the best looking "Limited Express" trains in Japan. This could be the real reason some people still take them all the way to Nagasaki. My favorite Shinkansen train is JR West's class 500, my choice for best looking high speed train ever. I think you did a video about the one that was turned into the "Hello Kitty" train.
That must have been interesting seeing the shinkansen line under construction on your journey to Kagoshima! Looking forward to the opening of more shinkansen lines in the future!
5:37 > Why does this always happen Since it is the Sound barrier (for local residency from the Sinkansen running noise), you will encounter such situations in densely populated areas. Additionally, it is common and normal to find densely populated coastal areas in Japan, as 70% of the country's land area is mountainous and people tend to avoid these mountain areas to live.
I've been to Japan five times in 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. I went to Nagasaki in 2017 and did lots of things like go the Glover Garden, Siebolt Museum and the outside of the Huis Ten Bosch theme park. I am going to Japan between the 6th to the 19th September and am definitely going to Tokyo and Nagoya but don't know where else I'll go. I haven't been to Shikoku or Hokkaido yet and I don't really know northern Honshu - Sendai, Fukushima etc. There so many possibilities about where to go.
It really depends on what you are looking for. There are so many amazing places in Japan. I you share your interests with me, I might give you a couple of ideas.
Its only n700s with red bottoom, like new E8 = old E6. The E5 bullet the best of the best today =) In JR Kyushu most be interesting E800/E500, because its rare.

@cakeswithfaces grammar is my strong point, at least, so it was back when freshly studied. Probably I am gonna to read some sooner or later. The study of Japanese had back at the time messed up my English study and my own mother language .
I love Nagasaki. 🥰 I think Nagasaki is a really beautiful city. 💖✨ I love Champon in Nagasaki. 🤤 The new Shinkansen Kamome has a unique design. 🧐 I want to take the new Kamome and go to Nagasaki again. 💓
I am also a big fan of Nagasaki. For the history (most importantly the atomic bomb in the 2nd world war), the sights, and the food. We enjoyed Chinatown there, and the tasty chinese food there, in very simple but traditional chinese restaurants.
I am planning to go on a group trip to Japan next year in April and it will normally go to Fukuoka and Saga (among others of course), so the people of Saga definitely don't need to worry about me going past them! :p I'm so hyped for it even though I haven't even booked it yet. And one of the 'weird little things' I'm really looking forward to is riding the Shinkansen!!
I'm sure Saga prefecture will be happy you're visiting! :-) I was excited to go on the shinkansen when I first went to Japan too! (Tbf that feeling doesn't wear off!).
Can I buy the relay Kamome/shinkansen ticket a day or two in advance at the ticket counter, to increase my chances of getting a reserved seating? I'm going to be staying near Hakata Station for a couple of days before going to Nagasaki, so I will be able to do this easily. Thanks, Amy!
Yes, you can absolutely do that! You can also buy them online before you go, if you want to - here's my video about how to do that: ua-cam.com/video/-kjYuh1KvN8/v-deo.html If SmartEX doesn't sell tickets for the entire journey (because the Relay Kamome isn't a shinkansen, and SmartEX is for shinkansen), you'd be able to buy the tickets on JR Kyushu's site.
We took Kamome last April 2023 going to Nagasaki...Planning to visit again this December...I was just wondering why there is no Shinkansen trip from Hakata to Nagasaki...Why Kamome starts at Takeo Onsen...
I have a question about transferring from a metro train to the Shinkansen in the same station. I hope this makes sense....I was in Japan last year and returning again next week (yay!). I got confused about this a couple of times last year in different cities. I can't remember the exact details, but it happened in a large station when I was LEAVING the local metro train and ENTERING the Shinkansen area. I seem to recall at the same turnstile I had to tap out with my Suica card (to finish my metro train trip), but at the same exact spot I was supposed to enter my Shinkansen ticket at the gate but it wasn't clear how do to this. I had to ask the station attendant what to do and most of the time they didn't understand my question in English. Does this sound familiar to anyone? What is the procedure to do this properly? Thank you, I love your channel!
Until this year, I've used a JR Pass for shinkansen, so it didn't really matter if the JR Pass wasn't scanned properly on entry. Using shinkansen tickets for the first time this year, there were separate exit gates for the metro/regular train and then entry gates for the shinkansen. But I know the situation you're talking about! There have been times on the metro when I used my Suica to transfer, then when I got to my destination, the gates wouldn't let me out! When that happens, I go to the desk with a friendly "sumimasen, chigaimashita!" (sorry, I made a mistake!) and they've sorted it out for me. There are instructions here on what you're supposed t do when transferring. It seems like you need to scan both tickets, but the order you do that in doesn't seem to be consistent! smart-ex.jp/en/faq/category/detail/?id=482 I guess the gates will always open for you, if you use the shinkansen ticket second...!
We found the relay Kamome very uncomfortable, busy, and very difficult to find space for our luggage not helped by the fact our booking via JR Kyushu's own website had us booked on the shinkansen from Fukuoka changing at Shin Tosu to the relay Kamome, then the standard change at Takeo Onsen and we had to rush each time to make connections, same on the return trip. The Kamome Shinkansen itself is amazing. Next time we'll book at the station or fly!
Oh no, that's a bit of a roundabout trip! It must have somehow worked out quicker for the time you were travelling. On the way there, the seats on the Relay Kamome were fairly uncomfortable, but on the way back it was a slightly different train that was better!
Yes, you can buy it online, then pick it up from a major JR station in Kyushu, like Hakata. There was a poster for a mobile version, which you probably wouldn't have to pick up, but I haven't tried that one!
Kyushu should have made loop circuit Limited Express around the Island instead of a tiny route Shinkansen. Unless it's connected to Kitakyushu it's not good Shinkansen. JR Central and East must be laughing at JR West lol
It's roughly every hour. There's a link here to the timetable - the page(s) you want is the "Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, Kamome". It can be easier to look at Google or Japan Travel by Navitime app for train times. So it's fairly frequent, but it's best to check the times so you're not waiting around at the station wasting time for too long!
As a wider european gentleman, I dislike the 3-2 carriages on the shinkansen. The 2-2 arrangement on the Hayabusa still has a special place in my heart
I don't like this "bullet 🚅 train", because during every night and you being alone yourself or couples. My friend beware, I saw a 'japanese news on UA-cam'. There's a 'strange stalker passenger' right here on your "bullet 🚅 train!" Please, this is not a joke! If you seen a strange or horrible curiosity? 😮 Notify the conductor 'immediately'! Before seconds counts 'executioner' will attack immediately. This is"a crazed killer on the bullet 🚅 train"! Stay safe you 2.

This is what I was looking for! I was so confused why I didn’t get a ticket for Takeo Onsen. This definitely eases my anxiety
Glad it helped! The transfer's actually really easy and nothing to worry about at all. :-)
Much love to the Japanese trains being on time. A train switch of 3 min would be an immediate 'Nope' in my country hahaha
Haha, it wouldn't work in the UK either, our trains are so often late!
Rode it last year and agree about the barriers (and tunnels) getting in the way of views.
