    A great pattern challenge! Who loved it? Well...apart from all those belt loops and belts to turn in 4 hours as well as all the other parts - but it was something many of us would want to make at home? What are you thoughts?

    To put you out of your misery the sweater worn by Vicki was the Love Note by Tincanknits on Ravelry. It's been knitted by just about everyone (not me) and I recognised it immediately.
    Love the weekly unpicked episodes They really add something extra to watching the Sewing Bee.

      Wonderful! I knew the youtube audience would help me out! I thought I was a big fan of Tin Can knits too....clearly not! Yes, so it's me and you who haven't knitted the lovenote but everyone else has hahah. It's a bit like the Ranunculus...have you done that? Stuart (thank you for your kind words too)

    One thing I really liked about the show this week is that the sewers seemed to actually enjoy making the robes for the children. Lots of smiles and laughter. The binding obviously gave some a bit of grief, but all in all I thought the sewers enjoyed the challenge. As for the made to measure, I'm amazed anyone could get a child's outfit made in 3 hours with any kind of perfection.

    So glad that sewing bee returned to normal sewing this week. I was pleased that Tony got garment of the week as it was stunning but I also thought his transformation should have come first as it was also very good. Only two slippers this week too so must have been ok! Keep up the good work on the review, always entertaining.

    Brilliant, as per usual, making us smile. It was right for Fauve to go this week, I thought. My favourites for the final are Mia and Lizzie and Asmaa at the moment, but I’d like to see someone rising up that isn’t shining yet! I always like an under dog! 😃😘

    I enjoyed the episode, although there have certainly been better children's weeks in the past, with clever costumes, etc. I did a double-take, however, when I saw the fabric that Lauren was using. I made a dress out of the exact same fabric during lockdown and - shock! I was actually wearing the dress while watching the show! 😲 Not the same dress style, of course! I promise you I am more than 5 years old 😂

I loved tony's dress it was beautiful and agree it was garment of the week. Loved Tony's, Mia's, and Vicki's made-to-measures...
    I think Lizzie was very lucky, if Fauve's jumpsuit had fitted better it would have been a tough decision. Welt pockets were in the pattern challenge of one of the finals, not sure why anyone would choose to put them in when you have only 3 hours...
    I loved Lauren's transformation, I think she has been underscored this week and in previous weeks because her aesthetic preferences don't match the judges'. #TeamNotEverythingNeedsABigBow.
    I think I missed part of the description of paper piecing because I was searching online for an adult sized pattern for the dragon dressing gown....
    Can't imagine what the 90s week will be like, all I remember are slip dresses and floofy jumpers....

    Another great show, both the GBSB and Unpicked. The dragon dressing gowns were super and everyone did well but I was surprised at how many of the Bees had not used bias binding before.
    The transformation challenge this week was a bit meh! I can imagine getting a denim jacket from a second-hand shop and personalizing it but few of the resulting jackets were something I can imagine any child wanting to wear, the exceptions being Tony’s dinosaur jacket and Lizzie’s scatter jacket. Thank you for reminding me about Lauren’s jacket, yes I thought she was judged harshly.
    I cannot understand why they were given less time for the m2m. Little girl’s dresses may be smaller but they take every bit as long to make. Asmaa’s rolled hems were a joy to behold. Mia’s dress was delightful and probably the best-fitting dress, I would have put the sash bow all the way around but otherwise, I thought it was perfection! Tony’s dress was adorable and my garment of the week. I agreed with Ting about Vicky’s dress but I don’t agree that Lizzie should have gone home. Yes, her m2m was a disaster but I don’t think that you can totally discount that she won both the pattern challenge and the transformation round. It would be nice to know the weighting of each round - does the m2m outweigh both of the other two rounds put together?

    • @TheWoolpatch
      @TheWoolpatch  Рік тому

      We've discussed the weighting many times over the years. no one knows. The M2M definitely has more weight as the 'big finisher' and has in the past helped many a sewer out if they were bottom in 1 and 2.

    I would have preferred the transformation challenge to have used torn or damaged demin jackets... how to repair and upcycle them, or like Ting said, to convert an adult jacket to kidswear. I like the idea of upcycling or making them more personalized and unique. I would have liked Mia's if she had removed the back panel of the jacket and changed the fit. Lauren's foundation piecing was a neat idea, but SO much work for 75 minutes. Of course, they told the audience they didn't just want to see something appliqued to the back, so hers was going to be marked down.

  • @SueTownson

    It's traditional for the Sewing Bee to do a kids week challenge and i thought it hit the right variety and cuteness. I loved that one little girl danced for joy in her dress and Tony's dress looked angelic with the white colour and his model with flaxen hair.

    There's something else about the previews of future episodes. Look away from this comment now, if you want to ignore spoilers!
    Have you looked away yet?
    OK, here we go.
    In the "over the next ten weeks" segment before the opening credits of episode 1, we got glimpses of MTM garments from various future episodes. There are 2 left that are still in the future, and they're both worn by Asmaa's model. There's the olive-green dress that we've just seen again in the 90s week preview, and there's some sort of short-sleeved boiler suit with metal fastenings. It's not an absolute guarantee that Asmaa's safe next week, because the producers do sometimes reassign an eliminated sewer's model, but it's a strong clue.

    Thanks for another great unpicked! I threw a slipper at the transformation challenge (has there been a week when I haven't?!) basically a customization/decorating challenge with very fuzzy judging criteria..! Lizzy's roller skating jacket was cute though!
    In the M2M Fauve was let down by the pattern she used, Simplicity S8850 - I've made it for my daughter and it's a disaster.. with no fastenings, either you go way too big so they can get it on or you go for the right fit and they can't get into it 😂 the dress I made for my daughter only fit her for about 2 weeks..! I don't think Vicki made a good choice either, tulle was not a good idea surely...!

    Love your discussions but this week I’m going out on a limb, Tony was criticised for the finishing on his zip and it did look a bit like mine do occasionally!! I was therefore a bit surprised by the garment of the week choice. Having said that there wasn’t really anything else totally outstanding, possibly because of the shorter time frames allowed. See you next week 👋

    Tony “ beanie’s” dress was lovely , great concept and it fitted beautifully . Lizzies made to measure was a disaster and I think the judges should have considered her for elimination - I agree with Ting At this stage a non finished garment is not really a goer ( slipper from me ) . A few of the MTM outfits didn’t seem to fit too well but the models were wearing sweatshirt type tops when trying them on 😮( another slipper - plus my usual one for the transformation challenge ) .I would love to see Tony in the final . Thanks again for all your comments

    I agree with you about the “transformation” challenge, it was more of an embellishment challenge using Betty’s Strictly scraps and a job lot of denim jackets she’d found at a car boot sale!
    I thought Tony’s was great. The scuba gave a traditional dress a lovely modern twist and his model clearly loved it 😍 I also really liked Mia’s Christmas dress but, sorry Stuart, not with the red brooch 😂
    My 90’s sewing mainly consisted of adapting clothes to wear for work…bump coverage 😂😂 Maybe that should be a transformation challenge…”here’s a tent/table cloth/curtains we’d like you to make a maternity dress/dungarees” 🤰🏻

      aww thank you. It's lovely to talk more about sewing and analyse it. Yes, you are so right and it never occurred to me when we were discussing it about the fact no boys appeared. Perhaps it's to do with the young models so had the be restricted on brief.

    @michaelahilbert7097 Рік тому

    Thanks for the entertaining episode, you two! I rather enjoyed the actual show too, given that I'm not interested in children's clothes.
    I agree with you on the timing issue. If (and it's a big if) it's quicker to make these garments, then why not have a less frantic episode for a change? The other one of my slippers was dedicated to the MtM challenge. As you say, another girl's dress. Why not boys? Occasion wear for boys can be so boring, why not let the sewers come up with something original for that?
    As for the transformation, I kind of get why they set it. You buy a lovely second-hand denim jacket, and your stroppy/fashion-conscious child won't wear it because it's boring. What I didn't get was their criteria for judging.
    And lastly, sorry Stuart, I'm with Ting on the brooch thing. But if they ever do a child-grandma-lookalike challenge, you're right on the money ;-)

    Another "I would have been tempted to..." thing from me this week. In the pattern challenge, what was with those round pupils in the dragon eyes? I would have been tempted to go off pattern and make reptilian vertical-slit pupils, with the white felt on top and the pupil shape cut out of it to reveal some black felt.
    In the transformation, did some of the jacket pockets get sewn shut by the appliqué?
    In the MTM, I thought Asmaa said she was aiming to do the rolled hem on the overlocker. That's done with the stitch finger retracted, and high thread tension to roll the edge, and it's way less time-consuming than using a scroll foot on the sewing machine. So, her hem was still impressive, but not completely jaw-dropping!

    • @TheWoolpatch
      @TheWoolpatch  Рік тому

      Yes, very very good point and in keeping. Kids love monsters/dragons to be exactly that. It never occurred to me, but now you've said it, yes, would be way better than round cartoon eyes.

    I must admit I enjoyed this week as it seemed to have gone back to sewing not designing. As someone else has pointed out, the models were wearing t.shirts or similar when the fittings took place therefore some of the contestants may not have allowed for them not wearing any when on the cat walk. I think maybe the models should have had white t.shirts or similar to take up some of the "slack" when modelling. And I am the only one you closes her eyes when I see rotary cutters being used to cut out patterns?

    • @user-be3lc2tr4d
      @user-be3lc2tr4d Рік тому

      @@TheWoolpatch I have been binge watching the past series and Ricardo, Series 5, was asked at one point why he had so many plasters on his fingers. Later it went to a shot where it showed him cutting and all you heard was me shouting "I'm surprised you got any fingers left!" He was cutting towards himself milli-meters from his fingers and the fabric was slipping at well. When I use a rotary cutter which is only for quilting, I always manually open it and never lock it open. I did once and caught my finger when I left it on the cutting mat, it was painful and bloody. When the cutters are not in use I always lock them closed, mainly in case I drop them.
