2020+ Subaru Outback Oil Change

- How to change the engine oil in a 2020-2021 Subaru Outback, shown in less than 2 minutes with no nonsense. This is an Onyx XT with 2.4L turbo, but the same general process applies to all Subaru models. You need a 5 Quart container of 0W-20. The Subaru oil filter is part 15208AA15A and the crush washer (gasket) is part 803916010. The drain plug is 14mm. Note the new oil color is purple because I unnecessarily spent extra money to have cool purple oil. The process and even the oil filter part number is the same even on my 2014 Outback too. If this helps, check out my other Subaru videos. Thanks for watching.

Yes! No unnecessary BS (fancy editing, commentary or overbearing music). This is all that’s needed.
I also liked the simplicity of this.
Word
The perfect instructional video! Everyone please follow this guy’s example. No intro, no fluff, no unnecessary talk, all details and explanations in the notes section, straight to the point as succinctly as possible. Great work!!
Pro tip, loosen the oil filter quarter turn, leave it like that while you drain your oil from the pan. The pressure will pull all of that oil from the filter into the pan making the clean up ontop not necessary.
Why can't all how to videos be this good!! Love how there's no extra fluff, just short n simple.
Thanks for making it a quick oil change vid instead of a unnecessary 20-30min oil change vid.
Thanks for posting. 2.4l turbo- 25 ft lbs drain plug and 4.8 quarts 0-w20. I don’t need jacks because of the lift. Engine air filter/cabin air filter every other oil change.
Exactly the info I was looking for. Thanks
If only all instructional videos were like this.
Subaru's are so user friendly. Thank God
Great video! A couple of tips that were helpful for me. I have a 2022 Outback Onyx.
*The socket size for the drain plug on my 2022 Onyx is 17mm, as I believe it is for the Outback Wilderness, judging by comments on various Subie forums. Unclear if this is for all recent XT variants.
*The drain pan on mine appears to have been painted with the drain plug in place. When you take the drain plug off the first time, there will appear to be no crush washer installed. If you look closely, you will see a very thin line just under the bolt head, carefully run an x-acto or utility knife around the edge to free the original crush washer so you can replace it.
*Only found correct size crush washer at dealer. $1.80/ea. Auto Zone, O'Reilleys and Napa did not have them
*You do need to prime the oil system after you change the oil. Another comment said it was not necessary. My first Subie, always had Honda's so this was new to me also. It is apparently important to do and takes less than 30 seconds. With car in park, bury gas pedal and start engine. It will only turnover, not fire. Keep pressing till the oil pressure light goes out. Then start as normal.
Thank you so much for your info!
Thank you for this straightforward, no nonsense video. I bought a new Outback last year but since the dealership only includes 4 oil changes (2 years total), I was worried about oil change costs after 2 years since 2 of my friends that have Forresters tell me it costs almost $200 for an oil change and they kept insisting I can't do it myself. After watching the video, I know I can do it, so thank you!
Thanks so much for not contaminating your video with fuzzy guitar power chords, like most videos do. Great job!!
The Subaru service manual says you must circulate the oil through the filter before starting the engine. The procedure is to place your foot hard on the accelerator and crank the engine for 5 seconds. It will not start. Watch for the oil pressure light going out. If it does not go out, repeat for another 5 seconds. Once out, start the engine as normal.
I'm a certified tech I've worked at every quick lube and actuality worked for subaru for 3 years. This is extremely unnecessary. As are a lot of things in service manuals.
@@savageking-medusa6745 with all due respect, I trust Subaru Japan.
That procedure allows the oil filter to replenish
How do you crank the engine for 5 seconds with a push button start? Hold it down?
@@booboodaddy Yes hold down the gas pedal AND the brake. Hold it down until it shuts off. Then afterward just start the car like usually.
Straight to the point and super clear instructions. Perfect tutorial.
Thank you!
37 years old and I finally learned how to change my oil
Heck yeah!
I wish I could thumbs this up again! Short and sweet!
Thank you! No nonsense!
Hi, just a quick note that that is the incorrect orientation of the drain plug gasket. The flat side must be on the plug itself, with the round part contacting the oil pan.
Yes your right, I dunno if it really matters cause I haven’t seen it fall out when I’ve done it. Good eye though
@@torkmonster8425 Kinda matters. The curved/crowned side fits snugly in the oil pan receptacle, the flat side sits flush against the drain plug head.
Hence the word CRUSH
Well done! Very informative and quick! Only detail missing that I was hoping for was torque spec on drain plug, but I can look that up. Thank you for posting this!
best video ever.. no BS . kudos!
Super helpful and to the point. Excellent video
Thank you for the video. Blessings to you.
Thank you.
Well, heck! I can do that! Many, many years, in a time called the 90s, i used to change my own oil in my 1984 ford focus station wagon. Contain your jealousy. But after that car, all the newer cars I got made it fairly impossible to do oneself. I had no idea it would be this easy. I may actually be able to reclaim my title of Bad Bish. Thanks! 😂
Super helpful and simple video. thanks.
Did you put old oil back in? That did not look like fresh oil 😅
That's what I was thinking.
Purple oil is purple.
Bravo! Information density! Great video and thank you.
Thank you! Kinda looked like the crush washer was upside down. Flat side goes against the bolt, right?
Perfect tutorial!
WOW, that was easy. Nicely done.
Great video, thanks!
Having a hard time trying to figure out which way if Lefty Lucy righty tidy
my previous video was an oil change on a 911 993 - that cured my desire for such a car.
great straight forward video
Thank you!
@@BurntOnBothEnds no ramp needed?
Nope!
Is that silver metal on the oil pan nut the old crush washer deformed? Or is it bare metal of the nut?
Is that normal that the drain plug did not went all the way by hand, mine went more than half way then I kind of need to use wrench to tight.
How long did you wait after shutting the engine off to check the dipstick? ie waiting for oil to settle
What about the oil life reset the dealer is telling me only they can reset to stop the notification dinging?
I just purchased a 2020 Subaru with a 2.4 turbo. The oil suggested is 0-20, as in the video? I also want to try Royal Purple. I've read where others say 5-30 oil works just as fine. Can anyone confirm?
Get an EZ Drain Valve EZ-108 and you'll never have to take the drain plug out again, or worry about the drain plug crush washer.
this is universal? all vehicles?
@@BicMichuM Both EZ Drain and Fumoto have drain valves for different vehicles. You can look up the specific model on their websites.
Agree on the EZ valve 108 or Fumoto. Outback is the easiest oil change. Great vid.
Do yourself a favor and get a fumoto oil drain valve. No tool oil change after that. Also to slow the mess below open the drain first then remove oil cap then filter
wow that new oil you poured in looks really black ?
Explanation in the description.
@@BurntOnBothEnds ahhh so it is thanks, since UA-cam changed the way things look I sometimes forget to read the descriptions now.
Sounds easy enough. I’m about to find out! 😂
You got this!
@@BurntOnBothEnds well, unfortunately, I couldn’t get the drip bolt off… defeated
Nice.
Do you need to lift the outback to change the oil or the ground clearance is high enough?
No, you don’t.
0:35 Make a mistake does the dog bite?
Wish my drain plug came off the easy 😂 damn dealership
The Gilman dealership in San Antonio beat up the oil drain plug badly when first changing the oil. I wasn't impressed either with the 4 broken windshields sustained in the first year of ownership and the excessive charge each time for 3 hours to recalibrate the cameras. I probably won't buy another Subaru.
Did u need to remove any shields or anything under the car
Nope.
14mm box end wrench
How is feel your “Honda CBR 650F”?..
Waiting for next maintenance.)
Is there anything you’d like to see? I’m sorry I haven’t posted about it much lately! Thank you for watching my channel.
I’m a Subaru outback owner too, and I love the videos that you’ve posted !!!! Just wondering, on the oil change, does the oil drain plug need to be torqued to a certain lb-ft? And how tight do you screw on the oil filter, hand tight or more? Thanks! Also with your XT , how is the turbo lag? What rpm / mph do you start to feel boost? Thanks again, keep making these videos, very helpful my friend !
I tighten the oil filter to the max I can do by hand, and the drain plug snug but not too tight. Those things aren’t specific to this car and as long as they don’t leak or are overtightened to damage something, you’re fine. I torque spec probably exists, but I’d bet almost nobody uses a torque wrench for this kind of thing (there are definitely places I do, but not this). Feeling the boost is more about the gas pedal than a specific RPM, but all I can say is, I knew I was going to buy this car when I floored it at the first traffic light of my test drive. Really quite quick and I was also test driving quality V6 sedans. It’s a great car!
@@BurntOnBothEnds thanks! Great response, helps a subie fan like me a lot !
New oil very dark..maybe disel oil. ??😮
For the 2.4 turbo they recommend 5W30 🤔
👍👍
Where are these people getting these washers from?!?!?! Second video with people replacing said washer
Get them from wherever you get your filter. It’s like this on every car/motorcycle/etc. Search for “oil crush washer”. You can get away with not replacing them, but they’re $1 and are designed to be single-use.
I purchased Subaru filters on Amazon and they came with the crush washers.
I have NEVER seen new oil pour black as coal. What gives?
It’s purple, lol.
do you have to replace the crush washer??
yes, otherwise, there would be a slow drip leak.
Why is that new oil black?
It’s Royal Purple.
as you can see at :45 this is not a 2020 model because the plastic guard is not in the way , LOL
Not sure if you’re serious but maybe it’s a turbo thing if there’s a difference. This is clearly an XT and I have videos of it in 2020. Thanks for watching.
Never seen anyone put used, black oil back into a car. Good job.
I noticed same thing.
Thanks. It’s Royal Purple, like the description says.
Why does every video i see need TOOLS to remove the oil filter??? What are y'all doing? Let the seal do it's work, you don't need to crank it to 90 ftlbs!
LOL fake !
But what kind of oil do I use?? 🫣🫣
