    I picked up a set of QST 92's at a crazy, year-end blowout price and managed to get a few runs on them before everything was shut down for the season. I absolutely love them! Like Cody says of the 106's, a fantastically versatile and predictable ski. Point it and go, it'll do exactly what you ask of it every time. I'm an East-coast skier and this is my first "fat" ski, coming off some older Dynastars that had a massive (relatively) shovel but were 71 at the waist. Couldn't be happier with the QST's! Now if I can just find that old Swatch watch I had back in high school... That thing is probably an antique by now and worth some coin!
    Thanks for the wicked videos Cody, keep after it!

    Thanks so much for doing a gear review. It really sucked zooming in on all the photos of you, Jimmy, and Killian trying to see what you were skiing on...you would be surprised how seldom a clear photo of gear shows up in a video. I need a good ski for steep hard snow...my 112 under boot skis chatter something awful when doing hop turns. I thought your ski on the grand was 88 under boot so I had to settle for a 94 Ibex Elan because 88 isn't quite wide enough. I haven't tried it yet, but if I had seen your review first I would have gone with your Salomon guaranteed. But I haven't purchased bindings yet so Salomon it is!!! My first Salomon binding since I raced in grade school 30 years ago. Your videos are very inspiring and fun...so important to me that they are so down to earth and honest representation that even the best skiers in the world have struggles...thank you!!!

    • @anLTproduction
      @anLTproduction 5 років тому +2

      Boot modifications are specific to each skier. Because each skier has a different shaped foot and range of dorsal flexion in their ankle's subtaylar joint, i.e. forward flex. Individuals also tend to pronate differently and may have other conditions like hallus valgus or retrocalcanial exotosies. I would never recommend that someone copy another skier's boot work simply because what works for @CodyTownsend will not work for you. Advanced boot fitting isn't a "dark art" either. It is simply a matter of someone that knows what they're doing taking a look at your bare feet inside the plastic shell and attempting to shape the generic piece of plastic that costs 800 bucks around your unique feet. I can also guarantee that no human being should be skiing in a 130 flex boot unless they had their FIS points well under 100 in their racing days. Boot flex isn't the right place to flex the ego, GoPro Hero 7 footage is what you want to spend the extra cash on. For example, I am 6'2", 230 and ski in the Atomic Waymaker Tour 110 and am in heaven when I carve perfectly round, dynamic turns after 4 hours of skinning. This, my friends, is why one should never buy ski boots online. Spend the extra cash and find someone like me that can help. Or be a former high school quarterback and things will work out like they did for the star of this video.

    • @montechie
      @montechie 4 роки тому +2

      Boot fit is specific to each skier, but knowing what others are doing for their desired fit will give others inspiration for solving their own fit. Especially for BC skiing where there are vastly different modes of fit (tour vs down)! I have flat feet and every “expert boot fitting” made me hate touring until I listened to some salty flat-footed dirtbags about their boot mods.

    I agree that boots are a very personal piece of gear... So can you do me a favor and ask Salomon to bring back the SX91 rear entry boot as some sort of "Heritage" collection for me. They are light, warm, comfortable, easy to get on and off, and have the first ever walk mode by just undoing the buckle. Touring pins in the toe lug would be icing on the cake, but I can mod that in myself. Serious.

    hey cody i love your videos. They motivate me to take even more time for the things I really like to do.
    I have always rented equipment for my ski tours and I have had to make a lot of compromises in terms of comfort or the performance of the skis. I have very big feet and only a few companies make touring shoes for me (eu size 48)
    This year I want to buy my own touring/freeride skis with bindings etc.
    What do you think of a Salomon Qst 106 with a Shift binding? I want to take some skis into the mountains and have fun on the slopes/deep snow and everything in between. The weight of the skis is not that important to me. I'm 1m90cm tall and weigh about 130kg with luggage. I find it very difficult to decide on a ski that I don't have to make too many compromises on.... I hope you can help me out. Kai P He mounts them almost to center, I believe. Cody did an instagram story mounting skis last year and explained that he doesn’t believe forward mounting hurts performance. He’s right. I’d guess he uses the longest length skis and mounts them -1 to -3cm back from center (recommended is -6cm for QSTs)

    • @CodyTownsend
      @CodyTownsend  5 років тому +1

      Depends on the ski and personal preference. For the QST 118 I go -2cm from dead center, which is quite an extreme mount point that I wouldn't recommend for many people. For the QST106, I go +2cm from mount point, especially on the new ski with more tail rocker. The MTN is on the line.

    Cody, seriously drop that skincare routine ASAP! Also, are you able to provide perspective on other brands than Solomon during future gear episodes? I don't mean to upset your sponsor, but it would be sweet to hear your take on why you choose to ride the skis you do. Keep climbing and coming down safe! (P.S. I cant believe you're a pro, I'm so much better than you)

    • @CodyTownsend
      @CodyTownsend  5 років тому +1

      Other brands will be tough to review as I am sponsored by Salomon. But trust that I tell you what I honestly think about them. I do test a ton of other brands but it would be hard to talk about them both positively or negatively simply because of my employer. But again, I can give you the best thoughts about the gear that I do use.

    Cody thanks for doing all these videos. For someone whom has tough times with boots (punching out, liners etc) I was curious what modifications you do for your boots to help make them work?

    • @CodyTownsend
      @CodyTownsend  5 років тому

      It's a lot of stuff. Some in the name of personal tastes, some in the name of testing. All in all though, what I do is stuff I wouldn't recommend a lot of people to do. I've spent a decade testing and helping design boots and that knowledge has given me the confidence to work / build my boots myself. But it can create problems (see Pyramid episode) and be financially irresponsible. Honestly, the best course of action is to learn from the best boot fitter in your town.

    I am just getting into backcountry skiing. I noticed your ski length are of normal length. I watch other channels and they seem to ski a bit shorter. I would think going shorter would save weight but would effect performance. When sizing time a newbie what rule of thumb would you use? Thanks great channel

    As a boot fitter, ski shop owner, and ski junky. What modifications? Other than fit, ie. Punch custom footbed, are you doing? Intuition liners (light and performance) ? Zip fit to add weight (and the best performance) lol. I'm curious. I have tested many makes and models, see what customers and friends do. Just really wondering what you did and mean by customize.

    Hey Cody, I was wondering... I love the 106 for new snow but why is it that you love the 106 and jump to the MTN Explore which I have and use but the two are apples and oranges. Why is it you don't have a pair of 99's instead of MTN? It has the same characteristics and length the 106 but a little narrower. I use the 99 on patrol everyday and have a pair with the MTN tech binding. Just wondering... Thanks! Love the vids!

    Cody, how does the qst 118 compares to the qst 99? Of course the rocker is more aggressive and the flex softer, but is the feeling somehow familiar? I have the Qst 99 and absolutely love them but I need a wider Ski for the really good days.

    • @CodyTownsend

      They definitely can get frozen. Tight closed foam is way better than light open cell foam. I used to have a hell of a problem with frozen grips but these Salomon ones don't seem to have much issues any more.

      I would but I feel like it wouldn't be of much help. I've spent so many years destroying, testing, breaking and modding my boots to my preference that a bit of UA-cam time would probably just confuse or lead people down the wrong road. It's in my opinion, just best to talk to you local boot shop expert about personal needs.

    • @alexmch1
      @alexmch1 5 років тому

      Wow, thanks. I am also on the "destroying and testing" phase :). currently on QST 99 (the best ski for almost all type of conditions, except the deep pow days) with Shift and testing on Nordica StRider 130 (done some modification on the liner and some small amendments on the shell).
      Anyway, thank you for you feedback and hope to see you someday in Bulgaria. We have some nice places here you will enjoy. Check it out on your next visit to EU.
      enjoy your "FIFTY" project.
