It's ok now, but at the time it really sucked. Glad you did this video to remind everyone, even the seasoned chemists, that accidents happen and that you should ALWAYS take a second look at doing something even if you have done it many times. Complacency will kill or maim you.
When I was a kid, some ‘friends’ found an unignited fireworks shell that the fuse failed to explode it on the way up from the mortar. A hacksaw, magnifying glass and the noon day sun were brought together on our driveway. It was a brilliant crimson red mine.. that completely singed my blonde hair and pale white skin. Imagine “oooh-- ahhh” sounds from the neighbours but at ground level. Mom was not impressed. I never did anything quite as stupid again and learned a good lesson about thinking ahead and thinking things through. Ultimately studied chemistry and retired as an anesthesiologist… all fingers and toes intact!
Reminds me of when I was about six years old and went to a civil war re. with my neighbor and mom. While walking around the civil war re. I happened to find an unused black powder cartridge and stuffed it in my pocket before any of the adults saw it. Took this home and dumped it into some tin foil and cut a small piece of a yo-yo string and took it to the sand in my playground out in the backyard and proceeded to light the fuse. It didn't work, it just smoldered at the tip. So I pulled out the fuse and stuck the smoldering tip into the tin foil ball with a full charge of black powder, the second it touched the powder, it went boom. I burned my hand badly and had to go to the hospital to get it looked at, but don't have any scars.

I can relate a lot. About two weeks ago, I was involved in an accident where my hand was splashed with a boiling hot solution that contained lots of NaOH. I went to the hospital and I have a severe second degree burn. A chunk of skin about the size of a egg is completely missing from my hand.
All post-2001 commercial automotive airbags are supposed to have a label on the back that says "NON SERVICEABLE" & "DO NOT DISASSEMBLE" or similar warnings; the warnings are there for a reason. Airbags can & do occasionally cause burns (due to propellant) to passengers in the event of an accident. Takata airbags in particular had a caused a number of burns, including the airbags deploying prematurely, which involved a serious scandal and in turn a massive recall for airbags made in 2013-present.
I couple things to mention about chlorates. Beck in the 70's in America. Sodium Chlorate O2 generators was used in pellet form to produce oxygen for a simple cheap welding torch. Sold under the name as SolidOx it was sold in dept and hardware stores. Some chlorate compounds can be highly dangerous if not ph buffered properly as they are hygroscopic and will form chloric acid which is highly unstable around reducing agents.
I learned this lesson when I was young and wondered if magnesium would burn different if mixed with potassium nitrate. I lit it with my hand cupping it to block the wind. It took about a millisecond to vaporize the palm of my hand.
i love this dude becouse he is geniusly curios about chemicals and how they work and i bet he learn by that mistakes... we all have or will make mistakes, and you can ounly learn from it
Just more proof even the most careful person can have an accident. I splashed hot red fuming nitric acid on my leg before during a project and still have a scar to this day. Doing chemistry in shorts = no. I hope you heal fast!
This is a good video on why all safety precautions need to be followed. It is good that his hand is recovering from the burns and that nothing worse happened.
I made some sodium peroxide myself and I'm sure it is because it had a stronger oxidizing power than anything else involved or potentially there But it never reacted with water so vigorously, It didnt do much to CO2 at room temp Further research told me it doesn't react readily unless at 200ish degrees and 70 degrees for CO But even during the research I found nothing about a high hydration enthalpy Your videos do a lot, thanks

I'm glad you are ok, burns on the hands are especially troubling, because you still must use your hands! I had burning plastic between my fingers, I had holes burned into my fingers, some 3degree possibly worse in spots, having your hand on fire and it not going out, is a bit concerning, a simple glove would have saved me though, unfortunately my house was burning down, so I didn't have time to wear any! Anyway glad you are ok, that could be much worse!
Burns are so miserable, glad you're ok now. When I saw the colour of potassium permanganate, and you mentioned that it can be used as a hand scrub, I immediately thought of Hibiscrub. But I just looked at the contents of Hibiscrub, and it's mostly just chlorhexadine. It's the same shade of pink though.

I learned this lesson when I was young and wondered if magnesium would burn different if mixed with potassium nitrate. I lit it with my hand cupping it to block the wind. It took about a millisecond to vaporize the palm of my hand.
Yikes... but you still live. Great lesson. 🤔
Glad to hear you're okay!
i love this dude becouse he is geniusly curios about chemicals and how they work and i bet he learn by that mistakes... we all have or will make mistakes, and you can ounly learn from it
I'm somewhat surprised that such an intelligent person would cut into an airbag with an angle grinder! 🤣👍❤️😎
I'm quite confident that his first thought after it went off wasn't "AUCH", but "IDIOT".
First thought was fuck, i just blew my hands off... next thought... OUCH, next thought... i need to change my drawers... 😁
I love your videos, thank you for what you do!
Get well soon sir. You did it all in the name of science.
literally one of the smartest people ive ever seen. remember guys always think twice, even a pro makes mistakes when they get excited
I made some sodium peroxide myself and I'm sure it is because it had a stronger oxidizing power than anything else involved or potentially there
But it never reacted with water so vigorously, It didnt do much to CO2 at room temp
Further research told me it doesn't react readily unless at 200ish degrees and 70 degrees for CO
But even during the research I found nothing about a high hydration enthalpy
Your videos do a lot, thanks
OMG wow man so glad you didn't kill or hurt yourself worse. Thank you for sharing this with us. Hopefully this helps to inform someone considering opening one. Glad you are ok
Glad you're ok Ts. We all do "Eh, it'll be ok...I'll be fine." stuff once in a while. I've thrown caution to the wind way more times than I should have. Keep on truckin' man!
Wow. What happened? Were you able to put it out?
I agree, burns on the hands suck big time, although I've never had them that bad.
It's the same shade of pink though.
get better soon! glad it was not too bad and that even the professionals like you can make mistakes and please keep up the videos they are some of the top ones on youtube
Sketch man, be safe. I a hobby chemist I know almost nothing compared to you, but as a ex-mechanic I know better than to mess with airbags. :P Glad it was not worse.
I’m happy you are ok now! Thank you for all the awesome educational content man. It would suck if you were seriously injured or maimed
Safety precautions written in blood... I haven't heard that, or similar, for a while. Thanks for the reminder.
Glad you've mostly recovered and have no major permanent injuries. 🙂
Rip Chester. Get well soon brother
LP shirt looks great. Miss Chester! RIP
Hope you recover soon. :)
I'm glad you still have your hand.
OMG.. 😳
Many people wouldn't show that out of embarrassment.
That was probably the most important part to the video.
Thank you for the time and bravery in the name of science.
1:10 is a great shot. I like the colour of the flames as well (feeling like a streetlight)
Thank you for your sacrifice I'm sure you've saved the eyes and faces of a few people with the example. Even hyper intelligent people can make mistakes!
In my local venacular "yir ah dafty". You saw the line, you eyeballed it for a bit, then you crossed it, like a dafty! The only good point is you survived reasonable intact. Now you have a constant reminder to behave yourself in the future. Oh, and don't do it for us, we don't get any pleasure seeing you hurt and damaged.
Stay safe, happy healing.
