Love Vienna. Was there when I lived in London. I loved the Succession museum. Where Gustav Klimt’ amazing paintings are at. I had to go there. Was amazing to see his original paintings. I stayed near the St. Stephen’s cathedral. Great cafes there too. Loved their hot chocolate.

Welcome to Austria, appreciated the mini tour of the area you're in. The schnitzel looked Golden with a fine crumb, and a generous portion, odd that it came with nothing else, and even stranger the waiter didn't suggest something to go along with it. The soup definitely reminded me of Matzah, but liver just didn't sound appetizing, so I'll take your word for it. Anthony Bourdain often made fun of Austrian cuisine, but a visit to Vienna in 2010 changed his perceptions of it being boring and simple food. Great video James, again.

Not sure if you're still in Austria... Schnitzelwirt looks decent yet the schnitzel itself appeared to be very basic, almost too basic from what you get at other places for nearly the same price. Many if not most places will include some sort of potato dish along with the schnitzel. Potato salad, fried potatoes, boiled... schnitzels and potatoes are like chocolate and peanut butter. A perfectly cooked Vienna version of schnitzel has a breaded coating that is "soufflieren" or puffy, the breading does not adhere to the meat. Also, the schnitzel should be properly cooked in butterfat (clarified butter) and/or pork lard for an extra luxurious bit of flavor. For the best schnitzel in Vienna, I thoroughly recommend Meissl & Schadn. They make them right in front of you and our server gave us a history on the dish. If you've left the city then save the name for next time you visit.

amazing video man! i am local from vienna and was very hyped to see that video popping up. Da Ferdinando in the 13th district is the best pizza in vienna, Plachutta ist the place EVERY tourist in vienna who is interested in viennese cuisine should try. best viennese food BY FAR. But reservation is needed and also a big wallet because it is expensive. I highly highly highly recommend the tafelspitz and kaiserschmarn there. greets andrew :)

Yeah, that definitely was a nicer accommodation than my hostel! Yep, I did get a Sacher torte, but I didn't have the time to see the Leopold Museum. Still, I had a great experience in Vienna!
When I ate schnitzel in Vienna I was flabbergasted that they served two schnitzel on the dish. It was so delicious I ate both pieces + a dumpling side. I was so full. I thought, back in New York you would get one schnitzel and it would be double the price of the 21 euros you paid.

yeah most likely pork. in Vienna almost always the better choice. because tbh not alot of good veal around and 90% of all veal in vienna is from the netherleands anyway.
Small correction: you had Ottakringer beer, a privately owned brewery in Vienna that makes one of the most popular beers in Austria - Krügel just refers to the size of the glass (0.5L = Krügel or Halbe; 0.3L = Seidl) :)

But Bavarian or Austrian potato salad is a bit more fresh and better suits the schnitzel, especially the veal one, which is the most traditional one. I've been to that restaurant. The portion (i think it was topped with cooked veggies) was so big i didn't feel like having another schnitzel for half a year.

Odd that it didn't come with the traditional Kartoffelsalat. It usually does and German/Austrian potato salad is the best potato salad I've eaten. That said, nobody will miss the decorative sprig of parsley!

There is so many better places to get good Schnitzel in Vienna, only reason this place is always so full is people like. Go to Rüdigerhof ans the Schnitzel is twice as good. Also very important to get cranberry sauce with it and Potato Salad

There's no question that Vienna is cleaner than NYC. In fact, Vienna is one of the cleanest big cities that I've ever been to. Although, I still prefer NYC.
I love liver dumpling soup. If it says "Wienerschnitzel " it's supposed to be veal. "Scnitzel Wiener Art" is pork. They take it pretty seriously in Austria.
@@Jamesnu yes you are right. I went back to check it, not that I doubted you. But I had been alway been told of the fine nuance in interpretation of the original veal cutlet. Most often Austrians are very vocal about the purity of the word choices. I grew up (in Germany) eating mostly the pork schnitzel. And it is a very delicious cut of meat. Your Schnitzel did look very delicious, and the lemon is usualy all that goes onto the meat, unless you order one of the specialty kind. Your videos are always a joy to watch.
Germans always wanna teach everyone about the Austrian food - as a Viennese I can tell you, absolutely no restaurant in Austria calls the Schnitzel „Wiener Art“ (Viennese style), it’s always called Wienerschnitzel plus which meat it‘s made of!

I remember from visiting restaurants in Germany, as well as in Austria, that it was very important to note the difference prior to that. I guess it was intended for the consumer to know if it was veal or pork. I know food culture changes, I just did not keep up on the new trend.
Well it is not the best Wiener Schnitzel in Vienna and not authentic eaten plain with no traditional sides. Hope you will eat more Austrian dishes and enjoy the real cafe scene with its gems
schnitzel used to be made with veal. As you know veal is beef, but not beef from cows whos muscles developed. there are nine states that make up the federation of Austria has since 2004 incorperated the most kind and egalitarian animal welfare legislation in the world. Their animal welfare act accounts for protection for farm animals. Not only regarding their food and water , but also their freedom of movement and to be raised without undue fear and infliction of mental pain which does undoubtedly occur in the production of veal. Ill leave you to research why veal is veal. So the schnitzel has moved to pork, where at least the pigs meat can remain white regardless of how old the piggy was or what it enjoyed eating, and it didnt have to be restricted from moving, just to keep its flesh white.

I think Spain has the best food in the world, but I did love eating in both France and Italy. However, nowhere can compete with NYC when it comes to variety.
Hello Austrian born and raised here, i think giving the best schnitzel award to the schnitzelwirt is a rushed statement, i would love for you to try the original at Gasthaus Figelmüller and the high end version at Steirereck. Just as a heads up, Steirereck the two michelline stared restaurant will kot feel worth it if you order a la cart because the prizes are ridiculous for the normal working class dishes. The prefix menu is also how Steirereck got to number 22 on the world best restaurants list ;)

There's no question that Vienna is cleaner than NYC. In fact, Vienna is one of the cleanest big cities that I've ever been to. Although, I still prefer NYC.

If it says "Wienerschnitzel " it's supposed to be veal. "Scnitzel Wiener Art" is pork. They take it pretty seriously in Austria.
Yeah, I know what you mean, but with that notation about pork at the top of the menu, I didn't want to say anything about the meat with certainty.
@@Jamesnu yes you are right. I went back to check it, not that I doubted you. But I had been alway been told of the fine nuance in interpretation of the original veal cutlet. Most often Austrians are very vocal about the purity of the word choices.
I grew up (in Germany) eating mostly the pork schnitzel. And it is a very delicious cut of meat. Your Schnitzel did look very delicious, and the lemon is usualy all that goes onto the meat, unless you order one of the specialty kind.

Germans always wanna teach everyone about the Austrian food - as a Viennese I can tell you, absolutely no restaurant in Austria calls the Schnitzel „Wiener Art“ (Viennese style), it’s always called Wienerschnitzel plus which meat it‘s made of!
@@lordnat1968 I am sorry, I did not intend to offend anyone. I left Germany in the late 80s. I remember from visiting restaurants in Germany, as well as in Austria, that it was very important to note the difference prior to that. I guess it was intended for the consumer to know if it was veal or pork. I know food culture changes, I just did not keep up on the new trend.

Well it is not the best Wiener Schnitzel in Vienna and not authentic eaten plain with no traditional sides. Hope you will eat more Austrian dishes and enjoy the real cafe scene with its gems
Over the course of my trip, I probably ate most of the notable Austrian dishes and I did get to go to some amazing cafes.
schnitzel used to be made with veal. As you know veal is beef, but not beef from cows whos muscles developed.
there are nine states that make up the federation of Austria has since 2004 incorperated the most kind and egalitarian animal welfare legislation in the world. Their animal welfare act accounts for protection for farm animals. Not only regarding their food and water , but also their freedom of movement and to be raised without undue fear and infliction of mental pain which does undoubtedly occur in the production of veal.
Ill leave you to research why veal is veal. So the schnitzel has moved to pork, where at least the pigs meat can remain white regardless of how old the piggy was or what it enjoyed eating, and it didnt have to be restricted from moving, just to keep its flesh white.

I think Spain has the best food in the world, but I did love eating in both France and Italy. However, nowhere can compete with NYC when it comes to variety.

Hello Austrian born and raised here, i think giving the best schnitzel award to the schnitzelwirt is a rushed statement, i would love for you to try the original at Gasthaus Figelmüller and the high end version at Steirereck.
Just as a heads up, Steirereck the two michelline stared restaurant will kot feel worth it if you order a la cart because the prizes are ridiculous for the normal working class dishes. The prefix menu is also how Steirereck got to number 22 on the world best restaurants list ;)
