All this time, we were worried about damage to our son's ear drums when hi hits his ears. He doesn't know his own strength and doesn't have the cognition to know that hitting his ears is bad for him. Well, this weekend he developed a hematoma just above his ear lobe and lancing it to prevent cauliflower ear was unsuccessful. We bought the wrestling head gear you showed and so far so good protection-wise. The lancing attempt was just yesterday so I have no results yet. Thank you so much for this information. So glad I found you in my search for solutions. I hope you know how much good your posts do for frazzled parents.

OMG! I can't believe someone else does this too! I'm an aspie with sensory processing disorder and I generally wear a flak vest, but I do have some concealable bullet-proof vests to wear in public so it's not so conspicuous (you can wear them under a shirt and not notice it).

my brother's autistic and he likes to wear my bulletproof vest because it is tight fitting if you adjust the velcro and somewhat rigid. i must say he does look cool in it too :-)

Try Danmar hard or soft shell helmets with ear covers and optional forehead bumpers / face bars / padded chin cups...

I know that they make helmets specifically for epilepsy to protect the head from falls but as far as beating yourself in the head it is a mix and match depending on where you bang. When I meltdown I bang my head backwards against walls so I have a martial arts helmet and actually those helmets can be used for people who hit their ears because they have extra padding around the ears.

Hi there. I am curious as to whether you ever use gloves during the self injurious behaviour meltdowns? If so, what do you suggest using? I am thinking of trying hockey gloves or boxing gloves. Although I am unsure as to whether this would help or hinder the situation. Any ideas you may have would be amazing. Thanks in advance.

The sports padding is gr8. Here in the UK, the NHS issue padded helmets look awful & would be enough to get kids picked on as they look like they came from an asylum & they don't have padding for the ears either! Unfortunately, this is all the padding the NHS offers, so for parents with no spare money (which applies to most parents with children as severely affected by disability of whatever form as Jamey is with his autism), they can't go out & buy stuff like that from sports shops. It's tough.

I like the idea of those protective pads that's a great idea I know someone who wears those for his hip fractures it makes it easier for his medical team to slide him on the floor

What about someone who severely bites his hand? Drawing blood Any leather hand bands that cover top of hand quick with Velcro?

yes but it costs some big bucks. humane restraint is one such company and just buying a set of arm restraints is nearly $100 their chest protection is very expensive and is made of hard fabrics to prevent people from killing themself or hurting themself they're called turtle suits. it is much more practical to get stuff like sports or tactical gear since it's designed for rough use. insurance is another issue, they don't like to cover protective things or autism care.

A great thing to protect his head would be a sparring helmet. I do karate and we spar, and this protects our head and ears from injury. I was thinking it would be good for him since he hits to the head and ears.

You are absolutely right. In fact, we starting buying karate helmets because the other helmet shown didn't adequately protect the ears! Karate helmets are great, especially the ones with THICK covers on ears. Again, it's important for people to know that just because an autistic person with SIB wears a protective helmet, this does not mean you let them hit themselves. They can still hurt themselves with a helmet on, but it sure offers another layer of protection while you're re-directing or trying to calm them in other positive ways. Thanks for your comment, yes indeed karate helmets are the best!

MACHO SPARRING HEADGEAR DYNA HEAD. So sorry, I never saw this comment as I had no alerts, so didn't reply earlier. Hope you found one, but this is best because it covers the ears.
