I would have been interested to see you watch the other video they put out where they do a breakdown of who the 2 characters are as it lends some explanation to why they chose the cinematic they did and why they have like the bar split shots of the 2 characters because both will be playable characters.
But for me it was nice to watch because it explained who this “African Samurai” character is and puts to bed the fear of “wokeness” which even as a so left I fell of the scale progressive, it took me by surprise when they revealed him. But the “Who the characters are video” did a lot in educating me of the history and that this black samurai actually existed in history though I’ve seen in comments and some baseline research that whether he was a “samurai” or not is not entirely clear and may be where Ubisoft took some video game story freedom. Great video as always and much love from the US!

To be fair, a black samurai is hardly a new thing. Almost every media that features a black samurai is based on Yasuke, whether they are western media or japanese media. In fact, there are countless japanese media, that features the black samurai Yasuke. Such examples include the manga series "Afro Samurai", Netflix anime "Yasuke", video game appearances in the "Nioh" franchise and "Samurai Warriors 5".

In Japan, rather than issues of racial differences, people often point out discrepancies in the world-building, such as major errors in building structures or the incorrect use of emblems. For example, the size and arrangement of tatami mats are often wrong. In reality, the place where the powerful Nobunaga would sit should be on tatami, while the places for his retainers should be on wooden floors. However, in the footage, it is the opposite. The Oda clan's flag features the inscription "永楽通宝," "Eiraku Tsuho," which represents money and signifies the importance of the economy. The flag attached to the Yasuke doll, a purchase bonus, actually bears the crest of Nobunaga’s retainer, Hideyoshi. Since Ubisoft might be distressed over these mistakes, let’s just say we've been "isekai'd" into a mistaken version of Japan. (lol)

Yasuke the Black Samurai was a real historical figure. He was a slave brought to Japan on a Portuguese ship and sold to Oda Nobunaga, who made him a samurai. Very little is actually known about Yasuke outside of his arrival to Japan, a few interactions with Oda, and I believe he left Japan after Oda died, which gives Ubisoft a lot of wiggle room to develop something new with him as a character. I wouldn't be surprised if that's a big reason why they chose him; he's such a blank slate, because of how little is actually known

I also appreciated the other moments in the cinematic like when Yasuke impales the opposing samurai with his sword and physically lifts him off the ground and then when the target backs into him in the end and you can tell Yasuke is like at least a foot taller than the target and just meant to be shown as a hulking giant of a man.

History nerd here. Alot of people have been accusing Ubi of being woke . I think people get confused about what a Samurai is. A Samurai isn’t just some foot soldier in a Yoroi that battled in skirmishes or war. A Samurai covers a broader term, as body guards & security were also considered Samurai. Yasuke, the black protagonist seen in the trailer, was indeed a real life black Samurai. And may have been the first black person to set foot in Japan during that Era (technically the Ainu people, the first settlers of modern day Japan were also black but thats a history story for another time.)
    How do we know this?
Yasuke has been recorded in history by one of Japan most well known history figures Oda Nobunaga, in the Chronicles of Lord Nobunaga (Shinchōkōki) which dates back to early 1581. He was also mentioned in many letters or diary’s from other Japanese locals, nobles etc most famously Matsudaira Ietada. As well as travellers from abroad such as Luis Frois & Lorenzo Mesia.
I wont got too deep into the lore of Yasuke as i assume the game will explain his story, but he did participate in the battle at Nijo Castle in 1582 against the Akechi forces. Also the least historical accurate thing about this trailer, is a female ninja (shinobi).

For a self-proclaimed history nerd, you seem to have left out a couple of things that were also noted in the chronicles of Lord Nobunaga, amongst other sources.
For one, Nobunaga was a collector, and he had never seen a black man before. So of course, as someone who had liked to keep his things close Yasuke was given a home, ceremonial sword, and a status high enough to be near Nobunaga as peasants were not allowed. However, what that status was supposed to be like is vague at best. He was DEFINITELY not a Samurai. He did not have entitlement to fiefdom. He did not fight in Nobunaga's battles aside from when he took up arms to defend Nobunaga from Akechi Mitsuhide at Nijo Casfle. He was not declared Ronin by the time Nobunaga died, a big indicator of not being recognized as a Samurai. It's impressive how you claim to be a history nerd, yet even the average Japanese- borne people having saying similar things about Yasuke on reddit and X.
If you think Ubi isn't being woke here, when they flaunt you the black character with one of the most stereotypical black haircuts used in media... which is funny considered its origin is NORDIC.
I have a bridge to sell you.

@@BurnCorpoStuffKunoichi is a term more popularized by modern pop culture, most notably the book series Ninpocho by Yamada Futaro (1959-2001). The earliest mention of the word “Kunoichi” being used in Japanese history is recorded in 1601, a few decades after the setting of AC Shadows. But the word was used in referral to “Women” not “Women Shinobi” . Female warriors did exist in the Edo Era though, but they were called Onna-Musha & were a class of Samurai.

The Hata clan = Ancient Israelites theory would be perfect for Assassin's Creed, as it ties in with the story of Assassin's Creed 1!

The Hata clan 「秦氏」 is a group of people who migrated to Japan. They are the clan that founded the Inari Shrine and the Hachiman Shrine. The shrines created by the Hata clan are different from traditional Japanese shrines. In the shrines built by the Hata clan, there are clear influences of ancient Judaism or Christianity mixed with traditional Japanese elements. Please come to Japan and visit these shrines. The character "秦" (Hata) is related to the ancient Chinese "秦" Qin dynasty, and if traced back further, it leads to the Yuzuki kingdom in Kazakhstan. Before coming to Kazakhstan, they were a clan that lived even further west. Please search for "Hata clan,"「秦氏」 "Yuzuki no Kimi,"「弓月の君」 and "Yuzuki kingdom."「弓月国」 Let's explore more about the Hata clan together.

This video is an edited TV program, so it is exaggerated, but it's easy to understand, so you can watch it with the understanding that it's half true. When you mention Israel or Jews, some people immediately think of conspiracy theories, but I am not talking about modern Israel or Jews. I'm referring to much older times. What I'm saying is that there were indeed people with roots in Israel, Egypt, and the Arab regions who came to Japan. This migration happened over many generations, not just over a month or a year. They came not only for trade but also to escape many wars.

Yasuke was a bushi, not a Samurai. Although they are synonymous terms now, back then they meant something different. As well as I'd like to clarify he doesn't wear the mask because he's not apart of that dynasty anymore, he has joined the hidden ones (assssins) - therefore the mask isn't necessary for him as he's not a bushi anymore (technically). Still makes for a great story nonetheless, this is all just my assumption because we don't know how his story is going to play out in the game but the trailer makes it clear he's a secondary protagonist and the girl the the main focus of the game.

Yep, Yasuke existed, so it's not out of the question that he could be a character in this story without too much historical inaccuracy. That being said...
Do we know it's him? As far as I've read, Yasuke was by far not the only African man in Japan at the time, but he was the only one in such a position, so it's very likely that it's him being portrayed.
Is it a high profile historical figure to portray Yasuke, a one-of-a-kind foreign retainer for warlords at the time? Absolutely. For those saying Yasuke was never actually a samurai, but more a retainer to Nobunaga, you may be right to say such specific things, as it's a very specific person. I haven't read a lot about the specifics of the historical figure. The question now is, which Assassin's creed game has ever actually not been historically inaccurate? Without diving into tons and tons of examples, the first one that comes to me is Assassin's Creed 2, where you simply go to Leonardo Davinci to engineer you assassin tools and engineering marvels. You and Leo become buds, he sympathizes with your position against the Templars, and he pretty much does whatever Ubisoft wanted him to do in the story of Assassin's Creed. That's a pretty high profile figure in history, being portrayed extremely inaccurately, simply for the reason that he was known for being an exceptional experimental engineer and visionary, and they wanted a vendor for your player to get their gadgets.
For those saying it's a "woke thing," that's totally fair, and it's a bit sad that the first thing we go to nowadays is to suspect stories going out of their way to do this and tarnishing the goals of inclusivity. I think that's down to the vapid nature of what I call "corporate inclusivity," where big companies insert diverse characters not because it is good, or it is a nice choice for an intriguing and compelling story, but more to receive applause for doing so, and generate debate(free marketing) around the choice being controversial. I've seen the world and modern audiences become more and more distrustful of these roles, and I think corporate inclusivity's disingenuous use is to blame.
And when it comes to replacing minority characters that we'd expect with other minority characters, is it really a diversity choice for the story? When is it no longer politically incorrect to ask, "Why not have the character simply be a completely original Japanese samurai, and not a foreigner with an actual place in history in our assassin story about Feudal Japan? We just wanted Assassin's Creed with Shinobi in it."
I will say, if it really must be Yasuke, and not a completely original Japanese samurai character, it better be damn important to the story. It better be a tangled web between the Assassin's Creed story and Yasuke's historical place among Nobunaga that makes him absolutely pivotal and further our main character shinobi's story (yeah, let's not forget there's a main character amongst our debate about the black samurai). Otherwise it's just a "hey wouldn't it be cool if-" corporate inclusivity situation.
As a minority mixed race person, I do look forward to the time that we stop swinging so far in one direction (companies giving the go-ahead to go way out of the way to make "inclusivity motivated" character roles) so we can just see a character that is a character, and stop distrusting what they are, and thinking they're a statement.

I agree with you that it's disappointing that our minds go to being woke. It should be whatever story they want to tell. I personally think they should have kept to a full Japanese cast however, have Yasuke's character as a major side character. Keeping it semi real and keeping with Assassins Creed tradition.

@@kaizammit I absolutely did! Love the reveal as she's overwhelmed by warriors and can't reach her village, tilting up and showing the village on fire as she rolls to a stop on the ground, her then-nemesis seemingly at the center of her family's destruction.
For all the discord, I really enjoyed Yasuke's feature in battle during the trailer, showing him as this monstrous samurai warrior dispatching multiple others, and picking the last one up as he impales him. It speaks to the person in history apparently being enormous compared to the Japanese people (over 6 feet tall back then was absolutely GIANT), with the strength of ten men, as stories were likely embellished. Sells him as this terrible, beastly warrior (though as you stated in this scene that he doesn't have his mask on, indicating that they want us to connect with him. I think he should have a terrifying armored mask on in battle as well). Same with the choice of him in another scene using that massive club weapon.
Last thing, from an animation perspective, I absolutely loved 24:34 when when pulls the hood over her head, and her expression, a very slight joy, is covered again, back to her vengeance, that "dark place" as you mentioned.

I agree 100% with you here. Ubisoft Execs have a documented history of swinging that pendulum so far purely because they thought it would make the most money or sell the most copies etc. Which is sad to see what should be steps in the right direction of diversity and inclusion corrupted and sold out as a product rather than progress to the point we have backlash on backlash and from all mindsets on it. I, as a white guy, cannot speak to it on a level you can being ethnically non-white but glad to read your perspective on this and agree that I really hope they have plans to develop the character and have him act as us in a way to learn the culture through the eyes of someone less familiar with it. Albeit it seems like in this case that comparison is rather daft considering Yasuke was enslaved as a child and sold to a Japanese higher class citizen and everyone else will be video gamers but I think narratively that first experience in the culture and history is more what Ubisoft is saying they were going for but that could be corpo speak for sure. Not like they haven't done that before 😉

Japanese shrines retain many influences from ancient Israelites and Mesopotamians. In particular, the story of Isaac's sacrifice in the Bible is very similar to the sacrificial story of the Onbashira Festival at Suwa Taisha. Many clans fled from the volcanic eruption in Japan 7,000 years ago, moved to the area around Egypt, and then returned to Japan after many generations.

Yeah, something I felt was left really wanting in this trailer is the tie into the Assassins. Like if Yasuke does not wield the hidden blade, does he never get inducted into the brotherhood? Based on the trailer too, it seems that Naoe is not an actual Assassin either but rather a ninja that dabbles in Assassin things but they did not really telegraph that she is in a brotherhood or if she is a leader of a brotherhood or anything like that. I am down for a base of Samurai and Ninjas but if that base is a unification of these 2 character types all under the Assassin's Creed I would be through the roof. Sadly, for those reasons, I feel like that is not what will happen but maybe more will be revealed in the next few weeks when they show off gameplay.

Narratively, I can see how getting to play as someone who is from another culture who is being brought up in ways that are not their own offers the same experience that an everyday gamer will experience who does not know Japanese history and will be learning a lot about the true history and the video game bits through the eyes of a character who is also experiencing it as something new as well. @@JacobS5005 I totally agree that it could work narratively for that reason. I think that's a big reason why The Last Samurai and Shogun were so successful.
The main difference though, is that this is a game. Having a "relate-able outsider" for the audience to use as a surrogate to understand a culture is far less necessary in a game due to the story telling medium being able to go so many places a movie/ tv show can't really get into. Arguably this could strengthen both of our stances, but I think we both know Ubisoft isn't smart enough to use the ethnic/cultural differences intelligently like Last Samurai or Shogun were able to.
