- Margaret Hamilton, most famous as the Wicked Witch in "The Wizard of Oz," discusses her long career and her love of animals in this rare TV interview with Sue Simmons and Jack Cafferty on New York's Live at 5.
The nicest "witch" you would ever want to meet!
My father used to deliver dog food to her when she lived in NYC in the 1970s. He said she was a kind soul.
I met Margaret Hamilton when I was a little girl living in NYC. She was a absolute sweetheart. .
You are very lucky! ❤️

OHHHH, I am SO jealous of you, but so HAPPY FOR YOU! That had to be a most AMAZING experience! ❤️
The Wicked Witch of the West only has about 11mins screen time in The Wizard of Oz, yet it’s probably one of the best remembered performances of all time.
She even played the Wicked Witch of the East in tornado scene and was on screen for just 5 seconds before the house falls on her 🧙♀️🏠👠
You better believe it. Margaret Hamilton should have been nominated for an Oscar.
Absolutely!!!!
Twelve minutes, same as Darth Vader had in the first _Star Wars_ movie.
Contrary to her opinion, Ms. Hamilton with her graciousness, humility and great talent was very beautiful indeed.
How perfect that Toto's tormentor was actually his protector. Lovely lady! 💜
It’s crazy how the nicest people can play the scariest villains of all time
It's called acting. Why is it -in your view- crazy?
The witch has always been good!! didn't you seen wicked ??
I would have loved to have seen her jump in and out of character
Angus Scrimm is a prime example of that
I met Margaret Hamilton quite by chance in the very early 1970s while I was shopping in a store in NYC. She was gracious, polite, and one of the nicest Witches you could ever want to meet. They just do not make people like her anymore!
A legendary woman, one of the first ever scariest villains in the movies.heart of gold.
This woman was on screen only 12 minutes and yet she set the tone for every witch to come . She was once a Kindergarten teacher before she became a wicked witch .
She taught in the Cleveland area where she was born
She really did set the (very high) bar for witches in film and television in that role.
As a matter of fact, she borrowed rather heavily from Martha Wentworth, who played the Wintergreen Witch in the radio series "The Cinnamon Bear." And she had been an actress and teacher for some years.
Oh wow! I never knew Ms. Hamilton was such an animal lover. I’m glad to see this.
AND YOUR LITTLE DOG, TOO!!!!!!!!!!!! WAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
margaret hamilton was the best
Sometime in the mid-80's.
Frederick Combs you’re not kidding. This lady set the bar what what a witched witch is. Everyone’s image of a witch somehow stems from her portrayal in some way. Everything about her performance was impeccable and flawless from the voice, the cackle, everything. The tragedy was she wasn’t nominated for best supporting actress Oscar for that performance.
One of cinema’s most famous villains. The Wicked Witch generations of kids, so it is fascinating to discover that Margaret Hamilton was a lovely women.
Wow, such a sweetheart. Really had me fooled as a little girl watching the Wizard of Oz. Lol she was so scary!
Not only a great actress but i fine human being as well it seems - awsome
Interviewers were so polite back then. Wow. That's so nice. I wish they were still like that. Everyone so polite and respectful.
Margaret Hamilton is a true legend
It’s a relief to know that Toto would have been in very good hands.
I wish I could have met her in person.....
Mack Dog yeah I wish she could have been born in 1970 or something because then she would still be young and never died yet
I met her. She was a lovely lady.
I did. In the 1970s, one of my college professors was doing a profile of her. She lived in the Gramercy Park section of New York City. She was very gracious.
What a graceful lady….scared the living daylights out of me as a kid!
Would love to have met her just to tell her how freakin incredible she was, class lady too🙏🏻
Love her. It's funny how she adores animals and children, and yet, her character in OZ was the furthest thing from that! 😆
A lady with class oozing from her, regrettably not the case from today's so called stars, the light from Margaret's star will shine long after the others have long since extinguished.
I met her In the 1970s, one of my college professors was doing a profile of her. She lived in the Gramercy Park section of New York City. She was very gracious.
I just love her.
Me too
Margaret Hamilton AKA Wicked Witch my all time favourite villain. I have collected a few wizard of Oz memorabilia of the wicked witch & the rest of the cast. It’s my all time favourite movie am a grown adult man but I don’t care it’s such a great movie.
Do your thang !!!!! I'm 54 and TWOO is my all time favorite movie. The Ten Commandments too !!!!!!! 👍
She seems so very nice, I wished she could've been my grandmother
Her like will never be seen again. A fine human being very humble a credit to America.
One of the most famous characters ever seen on the silver screen. Rip Margret H
I buy Maxwell House coffee because Margaret Hamilton and Vivian Vance sold it through commercials.
her Englisch was clear and pleasant to hear for a stranger like me , I could understaend a bit greetings from Switzerland Gstaad
I have such a crush on this lovely lady. Shes smart, caring and sweet.
She's just a sweet old lady bless her ❤️
A lot of actresses, Linda Blair included, play villains and forces of evil, then in real life end up in charitable causes due to compassion. It’s incredible to watch.
True evil cannot see itself accurately. It is full of delusions of grandeur about itself. A type of blindness. It takes one with enough emotional intelligence and compassion to see a villain for what it truly is and to therefore play the role accurately.
@@brightbiteVery insightful!
What a lovely woman. 😍 What a life she led.
Margaret Hamilton and Robert Helpmann played two of the most terrifying villains, and yet both were legendarily nice off camera.
The Wicked Witch and Child Catcher were terrifying
I completely agree. Animals should not be given as Christmas or holiday gifts, and never unless you are positive you want to care for it. I have read how many chicks and bunnies are dumped after Easter if they are too much work or whatever.
I still can't imagine that this little sweet old lady was the wicked witch and Miss Gultch...
Almira Gulch of Wizard of Oz 🌈 Amazing Actress Mgm rip
Who is the one that gave this a thumbs down? Purely wicked. Margaret is a delight.
It surprises me how short that interview was. I thought today the interviews were short. She was remarkable and I love how she talks about big stars and she doesn't realize that she was and will always be a big star. She passed in 1885. I was just about to turn 4. Growing up it was my favorite movie. She was so funny and so kind. I think her advice I say spot on. Animals are very sensitive and they need love. Kids can be a bit crazy around them and you have to teach them how to behave around them and how to treat them. Christmas is not the time.
My great-aunt was friends with Margaret Hamilton!
I wish more celebs would follow her example.
Thank you for posting this clip. I thought I'd seen every last Margaret Hamilton clip I could find, but I was wrong. I too, love pets and children. I thank you for providing this clip.
Such a Nice Lady Margaret Hamilton is very kind with a huge heart!! The Nicest Witch Margaret Hamilton was and Always Will Be!! R.I.P. 🙏🙏
Very sweet lady....I remember her long running Cora TV coffee commercials...
Her Wicked Witch character always reminded me of my crazy aunt...
Love looking up the lives very old actors from iconic movies
A most beautiful and kind woman despite the fact that a house fell on her sister early on in life. That must have been devistating for her.
Before Margaret was offered the Wicked Witch 🧹 her agent called and said MGM wanted her to screen test for a part in The Wizard of Oz. Margaret said, "great, for what part?" Her agent was silent, and was taken a back that Margaret asked that question. And he said, "Aah, the witch." As if she would be asked to play anything else!
This woman truly captured what it means to be a wicked witch.
Watch what you comment, you don't want mommy or daddy to take your computer away, then you would have no life.
She was a lovely and intelligent person and what the French call a “jolie laide”.
Ms Hamilton was a genuine and lovely lady, kind and sweet
Her scream when she throws that hourglass…JUST INCREDIBLE!!!!!
She was the END ALL BE ALL of witches! This woman was absolutely AMAZING!!! I so wish I could have met her! ❤️
She hit it out of the park, for sure. Truly iconic performance.
So nice to see her showcased here. She was a great lady.
The great Margaret Hamilton with a young Jack Cafferty.
Happy that Margaret Hamiltonis in my my heart.
They don’t make women like her anymore.
She out lived Dorothy
RIP Wicket Which From The Wizard Of Oz With Her Ashes Scattered And Died Of A Heart Attack
Reminds me of my Nana. looks and sounds just like her
A lovely lady and the nicest witch anyone could meet 😁
What a great interview she was and is so true young kids just dont need to be given an animal it is a living ,breathing life that should be took care of and most paents give kids too young a pet and the next thing you see is them being toted around like a handbag or a suitcase most adults dont know how to take care of a pet .
What a scene stealer. Love Margaret Hamilton
It is absolutely insane that a little old lady that sweet and kind and grandmotherly was able to play the witch character. I have read somewhere that she regretted doing that role, because it gave children the wrong impression of her. She was actually a teacher who loved children.
She was sweet ... people asking for funds from mailing lists of elderly people (who they are counting on having some level of confusion) should be outlawed, however. I know from my parents' experience, it is very common in the US. They get pleas for assistance from random groups in their mailbox every day. They cannot distinguish from a legitimate organization and a scam artist (who could?). *A good rule of thumb for the generous elderly: give to people you have sought out, not those who seek you out through third class mail*
Does anyone know that "ToTo" appeared again in an episode of the Three Stooges called "Malice in the Palace." The cat and dog in that episode was "Terry" who played Toto in the Wizard of Oz.
Terry was in around 16 films, give or take. She died in the early 1940s at age 11.
The best perfect witch ever!
The Wicked Witch cares about dogs and cats lol. She was a nice woman.
Maybe not “Monkeys”😂
Toto never got the memo however....so he/she had to jump out of the basket and run home to Dorothy Gale.... terrified I'm sure. 😵
What a sweet woman!
Awesome actress. When did this air please?
She died in 1985, so I'd say the early 80's.
Probably around 1984. She passed away a short time later in 1985.

really a beautiful person
All praises to Jesus Christ 🙏🙌❤️
Remarkable and decent woman!
I think that she was a lovely and beautiful lady, and so very charming
🙂😇🌞
Lovely
What a sweety
That newscaster must not have seen My Little Chickadee. Margaret Hamilton was in the same box car, across the seats from Mae West and WC Fields.
I remember seeing a commercial she did with her kitty! I think she had a Siamese cat!
Jack Cafferty lol. Putting in his 2c. Pompous. Regardless, what a delightful woman that Margaret Hamilton. Ironic she played one of the scariest characters to appear on screen, ever.
Anyone considering buying a pet for a child must be prepared to take over the responsibility of looking after it when the child becomes bored.
Jack Cafferty's hair is almost as high as Sue's. 😂
Margaret Hamilton was so upset by the Sesame Street episode (which aired in1976 and was banned because it terrified so many children) that she spent the last ten years of her life trying to appeal to children publicly, since she adored them so much personally.
This was probably the 80s
I think you're right -- She looks more elderly here than when she was on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood in the mid-70's.
wow she was only 36 when she played the wicked witch. that kinda blows my mind. Died in 1985 aged 83. Im glad she had a long life. Poor Judy died at just 47. Isnt that ironic watching the film?
Cool find. What year was this?
Cafferty's hair - god damn!
Character actors are often overlooked. I should know I am one.
Dorothy got Toto on Xmas XD nice lady
Meera Moran neither the book or
Movie mention when Dorothy got Toto. As a matter of fact, Christmas is not mentioned in either
When did this air?
October 26th 1985
You know what's amazing about hearing her talk is that when I was a little kid in kindergarten I Wachtel the wizard of oz and I am not going to lie I always hated her because I was a fan of Judy garland and when Judy garland play Dorothy and I use to compare her to the good witch I was a fan of the good witch but looking at her here I wonder if of corse I'm not that old but If I was you g during this time and actually meet Margaret Hamilton and hear her talk I wonder if I actually would like her in a way I wish she was my grandmother
What is the date of the interview???
She still scares the shit out of me
i'd lvoe to meet ronan geri spiace girl sarah:)
Hard to believe such a humane person played a mean, wicked witch.
Seemed like a very nice lady and very spry for her age.
when did this aire?
A few months before she died.
