As a d2 wrestler who is now Amateur mma fighter with a 2-0 record. I think one of the things that makes us effective are. Mentality and desire to dominate at all time. And that may include the desire to be good at aspects other of fighting. That the fact, majority of wrestlers are usually well rounded athletes. Being strong, fast , and have a good amount of Stamina. Lastly, thru the years of wrestling; we have developed a top pressure that can’t be copied by lifting weights or going to the gym.

A Wrestlers mentality is way different. If you took out all the wrestlers in BJj. You’re left with stoners, and people who want to have fun and flow…
If all wrestlers went into catch wrestling instead of BJJ.

Wrestled from 3 up thru college as well bro. I think alot of it has to do with "the system" we grew up in while wrestling. Not many people can relate to the grind of a college wrestling season, and even kids club and high school is much more of a grind than anything any others kids are doing at that age.

It's sad but true...and if to many of them become champions the UFC is going bust because wrestling is super boring to watch.

Right. I was thinking the same thing when he mentioned Royce. The matches were by design to be an advertisement for Jiu-jitsu. This is why, at the beginning, he did not fight any very good wrestlers. When he did fight a good wrestler (Dan Severn), he fought someone not versed well in Jiu-jitsu (as most Americans at the time did not have a good understanding of Jiu-jitsu at the time).

Dont overthink it. Wrestlers dominate. Is wrestling the number 1 martial art you should focus on/develop proficiency in? Of course it is. BJJ only guys struggle a lot against a wrestler as strong as them because the wrestler understands maintaining top position so much better than a BJJ guy it's insane. On top of this wrestlers are much more combat ready than BJJ guys. There is no flow rolling in wrestling and conditioning is included in practice. Wrestlers know how to "turn on" much better than BJJ guys as a whole. Now look at the fact that the wrestling we are talking about is folkstyle, freestyle, or greco, etc. No submissions...however submission wrestling is a thing, always has been and those wrestlers slaughter everyone.
I say all this as a MEDIOCRE middle and high school wrestler, now training BJJ and I am dominating everyone I roll with...big small, whatever belt. My hips, leg strength, balance, and takedown speed that i got from wrestling is too much for them to handle. Now that I learned basic guillotine defense and a few subs I barely get tapped and I'm rarely on bottom.

    • @Clesb2023
      @Clesb2023 11 місяців тому +4

@tristargymwestcoast I can't say for sure, but I think ignorance to submissions. I think it takes more training to develop takedown ability, top control, good hips, and pressure than to become proficient in methods to finish someone. Basically, in overall grappling terms, the purist wrestler has already done the hard stuff. Now, when we look at real deal BJJ black belts, they've caught up to the wrestlers because competition forces you to be athletic. All that technique over strength talk is nonsense. Legit black belts are all strong as shit, fast takedowns, crushing pressure, but it took them years to develop the athletic side of grappling. Wrestlers learn the athletic side of grappling first and growing up usually.

@tristargymwestcoast I taylor my jiu jitsu to mma applications. I've found I have to disregard a lot of key elements to jiu jitsu because they just don't translate to mma as well. Wrestling translates to mma better because striking is involved. Wrestling better prepares you to hold a guy down and ground and pound or go for really basic subs. In a pure grappling match bjj all day. But in mma the wrestler punches the black belt then he's a brown belt and so on lol

Yup totally agree. Wrestlers that are good are annoying and even when i think i can knee them or catch them they can at times fake high and go for the double leg and im on my back again. Shrimp Shrimp pull legs out but what ive learned is to have a super powerul arch and i can often reverse them. Its the threat of the take down w a guy who can strike and Wrestle that is tough. The cage is a major part though. Ive used strking against wrestlers in street fights and absolutely dominated. But it was open. I did get pushed up against a fence and did get ground and pounded but i was wearing steel toes and round housed him in the face hitting his cheek and breaking it. Wrestlers are very subseptable to kicks if they arent good strikers. But ultimately its been having a super sonic arch i learned strengthen from yoga poses that made my arch strong. I can reverse anyone eho gets a bit too low or not squared with the hips. And im super flexible so i can throw up a triangle fast. But some good wrestlers are so good youre just fkd. Now that everyone starts using the legs to tie up your legs its getting harder to get back to feet so i wanna be epic at take down defense

      2. It's citing *one* fight out of... *how* many striker vs. wrestler matches? It's an exception that proves the rule; it's so famous *because* of how rarely the "I'll just knee him" strategy actually works.
      3. If you've never trained MMA, then the idea that you'll KO wrestlers with strikes is quite literally fantasy. The majority of "just knee him" types have no MMA experience, as evidenced by the fact that they're stupid enough to make *any* sort of "just" statement about martial arts.

Elite wrestlers generally have great cardio, strength, grit and the ability to dictate where the fight takes place. They put strikers on edge with feinting takedowns, can keep jiu jitsu guys standing or like you said, press there opponents up against the cage and wear them down. Strikers have done quite well in the UFC as well, many have very average wrestling and jiu jitsu but enough to survive and capitalize on their strength. Ie. Lets start by saying that if it wasn't for bjj no wrestler can beat a jiujitsu just by only using wrestling. So now that's out the way lets talk about these new age wrestlers who are bjj exponents themselves. Khabib and Islam come to mind on how knowledgeable they are on bjj and how to shut opponents down within mma rules. Wrestler who are bjj exponents bring 2 grappling hybrid styles to grapple against a kickboxer/bjjer only stylist. The rules also favor the wrestler/bjjer because it takes 5 mins per round to control the kickboxer/bjjer stylist. Rules is what makes the fights favorable! If you look at Japan or Asian rules back in the day, knees to a grounded opponent and soccer kicks makes a world of a difference. But in America, the wrestlers dominate!

I agree your opinions but i just want to add something. I think the most important reason why wrestlers (especially Dagestanis) are dominating now MMA is because they are improved their submissions, guard passings and ground controls when you compare them with wrestlers who fought in early MMA times. So i am saying that wrestlers learned from BJJ and used Sambo so that they improved their whole game whereas BJJ fighters didnt really learn anything from wrestling or they didn improve their standing grappling skills. So that wrestlers became more complete fighters than BJJ and other guys and this is one of the biggest reason why they are dominating MMA now. So its not really mean that wrestling is better than BJJ for MMA, it means that wrestling plus some grappling is better than BJJ.
In my humble opinion about what to do against this situation is; i think fighters should start to train standing grappling skills, especially standing submissions. BJJ made grappling literally all about ground fighting but grappling is more than just grappling on the ground. There are so many very effective standing submissions, wristlocks, joint locks and quick breaking techniques in Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Hapkido for example. I know nowadays people have a big prejudgement against these ''traditional'' martial arts but i think we should think outside the box. Everything can be adjusted, adapted and evolved. You can upgrade and mix these standing submission techniques with some defensive wrestling skills and this can be really effective against wrestlers. Wrestlers are so comfortable and confident about making tie ups and trying shots for takedowns because there is nothing to lose, in worst case scenerio they can fail in their takedown attempts but they can try again. But if they would know that when they contact with their opponents there is always a submission or breaking threat even in standing position, they would think twice to using wrestling very comfortably. And this would give a big advantage to the fighters who has no wrestling background in my opinion.

I haven’t listen to the full video but I have a gripe right off the bat. Jujitsu and wrestling are cousins. They’re both grappling arts. a lifetime wrestler can level up in jujitsu very quickly. I did. I can’t speak to the opposite, but I would imagine that a lifetime BJJ guy could level up in wrestling. AllegedlyRickson and mark Schultz went to the Matt for hours.

Why is wrestling such a dominant base should be the question, biggest is how competitive the college level is and what it takes to be top tier means not only do you have to be able to pick up grappling quickly but a supreme athlete as well. This video screamed of a jits guy speaking on wrestling i think it missed a lot of possible nuances while using the cage as the big default

1:19 not true I think that’s where you have it wrong. I think the guillotine is the only weakness for wrestler who doesn’t know jujutsu or catch wrestling or judo or any type of a submission fighting. However, the thing about wrestlers is they could pick you up and slam you, and I don’t think Hicks and Gracie wanted any of Mark Coleman or any of the great wrestlers.

Mostly it's because so much of wrestling being about going forward in angles (going forward and sideways), which is the recipe to make your opponent carry your weight and limit their ability to move. By doing so, you tire your opponent under the pressure of weight transfer. And since the guy being taken down and controlled can't freely move, the wrestler can climb up its opponent to such dominant positions as mount and back mount. Jiu-jitsu waits back and sometimes relies on space to have the space to get into submission locks. A lot of wrestling is designed to close space and deny / nullify/ not allow your opponent space to move freely. Jiu-jitsu is a lot of times reactive, while wrestling is taking initiative and forcing your opponent in to less advantageous positions. Jiu-jitsu needs to be infused with wrestling principles rather than the wait for your opponent to give you space / make a mistake mentality, especially because good wrestlers don't want to give their opponent's space to launch an escape / attack.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that there is zero rest in wrestling. From a kid’s first practice at age 5 to his 100th college match…this is a standard trademark of the sport. It dominates all levels globally. No one who gets good to the point of notice at any level anywhere in wrestling can circumvent this.
Khabib? The least “resting” style of any MMA athlete of all time. Even GSP bought his strategic seconds of rest here and there and grabbed some extra breaths or shook out a limb from lactic acid accumulation from grappling exchanges.
Arguably, Khabib really never did while in the cage against an opponent.

Wrestling is mma. It’s the oldest sport besides running and maybe swimming. It’s just. Here’s your area. You can’t leave it and you must dominate a man your same weight and size. No punching, technical shit. Just Mano e Mano. Put em on their back

I agree that wrestling is one of the best. Especially in a street fight on concrete. However, I was mainly talking about how under unified rules, you can't soccer kick and knee grounded opponents. Rules tend to favor wrestlers in most promotions.@@danieldecristofaro4227

Boxing is better Offensively for multiple opponents than wrestling is, and wrestling is better Defensively for multiple opponents than boxing is.
Wrestling in a way is better overall because you can slam multiple opponents one at a time, but if multiple opponents grab a hold of you all at once, boxing isn’t going to help especially if they dog pile you.

The reason is simple. You can train wrestling every day. You can wrestle a hundred matches in a year and be fine. Our ancestors figured out that if they don't hurt their training partners that they can practice essentially forever and get super good.

Watched a random Defend FC fight, boxer vs wrestler. It was done in an open field, and man the wrestling was less effective. Wrestler would get a leg and try to drive, but the boxer would just hop and keep going backwards. Much easier overall to disengage/stand up/create space in an open field. In a cage, he'd be driven right up to the cage very quickly.
Of course it's only a single fight in a pretty random FC, but the open space clearly made it much easier to just back up and disengage. The cage is definitely a factor.
The other thing is the meta it creates. Better wrestlers get to pick whether the fight stays standing or goes to the ground. Also, better wrestlers can be less afraid of throwing and checking kicks.
