  • WHAT TO DO WHEN BINGE URGES WON'T GO AWAY - Recovery from binge eating involves mastering those urges to binge. Sometimes binge urges seem to recede when not acted upon and other times they seem to just keep coming back!
One of the most frustrating parts of binge eating disorder recovery is those urges. After all, if there was no urge to binge, we probably wouldn't so it's very easy to make urges our enemy.
In this video I share some tips about how what to do with persistent urges to binge. I share a bit about my binge eating journey and address the question about whether I still get urges to binge.
My book, I Can't Stop Eating, is available on Amazon amzn.to/3a6M6Hb

You are right, recovery doesn’t have to mean that we are completely free from our urges, but rather that we’ve learned to befriend them/accept them as something that we don’t need to act upon.
If that isn’t true freedom then i don’t know what is.
    Thank you so much, Sarah.

Why in the world am I craving foods that cause me physical pain.
I sometimes can tell I'm hungry but most of the time I think its emotional hunger.

I think I binge to relax and it's quite a mindless action. My problem is I've been doing it so long it feels normal. My weight goes up and then I take action which for a short time offers control then before long I'm doing it again. I found the idea of managing my feelings and accepting the urges are there, to be more mindful and aware that they're happening. I used to smoke, but now I don't and it was only through adopting new behaviours and not leaning into that urge that I became a non smoker. It feels a bit similar except bingeing is far more powerful, private and comforting. This video was more important than you know. Thanks Sarah.

This is really interesting because it's the same approach to panic disorder treatment. Learning how to accept and get "comfortable" with discomfort can be so empowering. It's fascinating how the catastrophizing can be so automatic that it can be unconscious. If we can learn to take a step back and be an observer, it is stripped down to an uncomfortable feeling. That's when it loses its power.

Just watched this video while feeling and observing an urge. Mine is a fluttering sensation in my solar plexus region. Its only unpleasant because of what it represents and the thoughts generated as a result. The urge feeling its self would actually be pleasant if it signalled, for example, an urge to visit a friend or similar lol. Thank you, Sarah. Great video!

this reminds me of ‘anxiety is excitement unsupported by breathing’ and i wonder can bingeing be stifling excitement

In my case it brings thoughts of my teenage/ high school years, when I was constantly hungry and dieting and failing and bingeing… then I binge to make the uncomfortable thoughts go away…and then the downward spiral starts…

I might have to do or attend something important but find myself in the kitchen, binging. It’s horrible feeling that I can’t make myself stop binging to do an important thing

See here’s the thing. I don’t think binge-eaters, overeaters etc can’t sit with uncertainty, fear, loss, anger, anxiety, loneliness, shame, etc. One of the problems is that we are consciously experiencing all or some of that most of the time and eating -which has to happen, after all - is what our body thinks of as a break from all that. A short break before we go back on the psychic treadmill, or before a horrible job, lack of work, abusive family member, lack of money, whatever, comes surging back. It’s grim.

I would say that these urges become more far and far apart, milder and definitely more predictable. Tolerable would be the right word. When the food is going good (regular and sufficient meals) and emotions and other life aspects also calmer, they almost disappear in the recovery. You learn how to handle then physically and mentally better and gain the distance from them like Sarah did

you are the first person I've ever heard describe the binge urge feeling. I TOTALLY experience this like ANXIETY when I'm telling myself no don't eat a cake or a reeses cup you had one earlier and like suddenly I'm like FIGHTING with myself that if I don't get it its like a full blown PANIC starts to grip me and it's in my chest and it's like I feel like that Sonic the hedgehog panic timer is going off in my chest that is like zeroing in on the item with the utmost tunnel vision and it doesn't subside unless I snack on it. it's so distressing lol

    omg.. thank you so much!!
and for me.. it's my feet. I always wondered what that feeling was about. I just can't sit still and I constantly shake my legs and I just can't put my feet down on the floor. I feel this discomfort in my feet whenever I get urges.

Great video, Sarah. My experience is that when I feel something unpleasant and I say to myself it's ok, it doesn't help. What actually helps me go through this and not flight the feeling is verbalizing what I really feel about the feeling, which is usually that I hate it, cursing it etc 😅. Makes me feel authentic that I dont have to be ok with the feeling. At the same time I dont figt it. We just don't like each other 😄

Thank you so much for your advice it has really helped to know that these types of things are out there and people need to share more of it I’ve been watching loads of videos btw but your video was different to all of them because you mentioned the uncomfortable sensations🥇👏🏾👏🏾

Hi Sarah. What you say makes complete sense and I love how you make your ideas accessible. It's clear you've experienced what I experience and that makes a world of a difference. I love how you know that jotting down how you feel when you experience an urge simply won't work. That bit made me smile in recognition. Sarah, your channel is LIFE ALTERING. I listen to at least one or, usually much more :) of them every day.
I have struggled with the binge eating particular on certain foods for, so many years.
I would like to ask you about certain foods for example and what idf we have a history of binge eating these foods,? How do we ever if at all relearn to eat any item, dessert, snack, condiment so on....how can we relearn to eat without a binge if it is at all possible?

    • @TheBingeEatingTherapist
      @TheBingeEatingTherapist  2 роки тому +7

Hey, thanks for your lovely comment ❤️
I think I may have mentioned it once or twice in videos somewhere, but one of the things I did during my recovery was allowing myself to eat any of my binge foods as long as I sat at the table with no TV, screens or distractions and did my best to really enjoy the foods. I chose to do this because I felt that I needed to break the association between those foods and numbing in front of the TV.
I did this faithfully for two months and it really helped me shift my relationship with my binge foods. It wasn’t easy. I kept surrendering to the uncomfortable urge to eat and numb while having full permission to eat those foods as long as I stayed present with them.
This was something that really helped me. I couldn’t have done it at the start of my recovery though

There is no story around binging. It happens and you are not even fully aware it’s happening. It’s no where and everywhere. The only way to combat that event is to plan against it in advance. If you can.
