I enjoyed your video as it brought back memories of my student engineering days and nights on Dallas in 1969 as a brand new O-1. 😃
The trains on the Panama Canal are known as Mules (traditionally towing a barge through a Canal was done by the Equine Variety). It used to be a tradition to prank the Junior crew aboard, sending them to get a Bale of hay for the canal mule. These days that's considered bullying.
Useless Table quiz fact, the exit from the Panama canal on the Atlantic side is WEST of the exit on the Pacific side. Many people assume that because the Atlantic is on the eastern seaboard and the Pacific is on the west, it would be the other way around. (The more you know).
Meeting that whale is a memory to treasure.

Congratulations Shipmate! From one 210 sailor to another, we are a different breed of sailor. After a decade sailing on 210’s I would offer to never stop learning and some of the best 210 DWO’s are engineers. Especially on a 210 everyone has to chip in. My 210’s even had the cooks running davits. Great description of Golfito, I always called it the Dutch Harbor of the south.
SO relatable. And Dutch Harbor of the south is super accurate. Erin spent some time there during one of her summers and she agrees! I hope to make it up there sometime.

Question and observation: Refueling in a rain storm? And contract maintenance on the new boats...looks good in power point. As you gain rank and have an opportunity to influence these things remember, you can buy stuff (tools, test equipment, etc) you cannot buy skill.

Great job on the video Nolan... Erin has taught you well. Congratulations on getting your Quals done on the first patrol. I am a 30 year Active Duty CG retired...with 3 years on a 210', and 7 years at sea.. great platform, but yep...seasickness is a thing to deal with...it will get better. As an Engineer on the Ship You are among the people who are vital in the event of an on board emergency.... You know the important systems to protect the ship including valves to open or close to deal with flooding, fire equipment for those emergencies, and so on. You are extremely important to the safety of the Ship and more importantly your Shipmates. As I shared with Erin... Keep learning... Trust your CWO and your Chiefs to give you the critical information from their experiences to make you a better Officer. Someday I hope to meet you and Erin ...maybe share some sea stories... or at least a beverage. Keep working hard!

Claire, St. Pete is a great place... I served as OPS on a 210 there and also as the CO of Station St. Petersburg and double hatted as the Deputy Group Commander (which now would include the Marine Safety functions and be Sector St. Petersburg). Also attended Grad School at Univ of South Florida. It's been a while, but I might be able to share some ideas on the area if you need.

Congrats on your first Patrol! Question: is it tough to make friends as an officer? It’s a professional environment I’m sure, but friends are needed for those patrols, right?

We work closely with them everyday. Maybe we should make a video talking about the relationship between enlisted and officers in the CG.
