    I worked for Pan Am in an office at JFK in the 60’s. While waiting for my interview I struck up a conversation with a young lady sitting next to me. She was applying to be a stewardess. She was absolutely beautiful!
    She was called in before me and I saw her crying as she left her interview. I asked what happened. She was told to come back when her complexion cleared up. I swear I did not see any blemishes on that girl. Pan Am was VERY selective . Looks and weight were key. This show is spot on!

      I wanted to be a stewardess when I was younger, but knew I would not pass the requirements. The skills that mattered most were appearance, not intelligence. I thought it was bizarre.

    This is literally a world class series and I was so shocked that it got cancelled after Season 1. I simply cannot understand the rationale because this is so darn good. I was instantly hooked after watching the first episode and finished the rest so instantly. Rather than reviving some seasons of other shows whom is still a flop, why not consider reviving this pure gem?

    I was a flight attendant when this aired. I didn't watch the first episode because I thought it would be stupid. A passenger said it was really good, so I found the episode online and got hooked. In 1969, my father took my brother and I to JFK to see off his friend on his honeymoon. They were flying to Europe on Pan Am. We walked on to the plane without a boarding pass or being searched to say goodbye. I remember looking into the cockpit marveling at all the dials and instruments. Eventually there was an announcement that all visitors need to leave because the plane was leaving. This was when flying was fun and you didn’t have to be searched like you’re a criminal. Nowadays flying is no fun at all. I’m glad I fly very infrequently.

      That’s a crazy notion compared to now! My dad flew for United from 1970-2004, so I had lots of experience with getting to move around airports with little security. I remember a story he told me about how a crew member was late for work and as the plane was starting to taxi, the guy jumped over the fence from the crew parking lot and ran out to get on the plane. It was Hawaii, so I assume they weren’t using jet ways at the time anyway. Good old days!

    My older sister was in the pipeline to be a major carrier stewardess with Pan Am/TWA in the late 60's. i remember a representative coming to our house and interviewing my sister and explaining the training program. It started with a grueling/very selective "charm school" that if you passed you then went to the even more selective technical school. And he emphasized the strict weight ranges by height that had to be maintained. It was a very elite selection process.

    • @darrellhagan6124
      @darrellhagan6124 Рік тому +15

      That was because in those days they actually cared about having their employees put forth a professional and attractive appearance which in turn helps to ease the potentially nervous passenger and helps to instill confidence in the flight and its crew. And that confidence was better placed on the flight attendant of yesteryear vs. those of today because the industry as a whole was much better regulated and higher standards were to be maintained and so flight crew selection & training were also held to higher standards. Nowadays, things such as tattoos, body piercings, freakish looking hair styles and colors, and excessively overwieght are all accepted and sometimes even encouraged. Sad really.
      I worked for a USA regional airline in the 1980s for just over 5 years and I can tell you that even then these things would never have been allowed.
      EDIT: After doing some quick research it appears that most airlines of today don't allow their flight attendants to display tattoos, but that is changing.

Watching the pilot again just now, I appreciate how well the Cold War aspect was woven into the plot. Just twenty years after the end of WWII, the 1960's was defined by the ongoing tension between capitalism and communism battling for World power. The notion that the Pan Am flight attendents were asked to be secret agents made for a great subplot, and I love that "Brigitte" was an agent who was somehow mixed up in the Cuban Bay of Pigs affair. This series was really well done and deserved to be continued.

I am not sure what is the problem, but it is obvious she was cast in too many films that were box office bombs, and that is highly damaging to her career. And those "goddesses have a short span, at best 20 years, and after that, she will not be looking like "a goddess"... The pilot was fantastic. This show just touched on one aspect. I flew for 41 Flight years out of New York City, and Los Angeles as a Flight Attendant. I had Pan Am and Eastern roommates. Dated a few flight attendants from TWA and World . The network totally blew it by not developing the show further. Just the experiences I went thru .. great, romantic and horrific { al Qaeda testing us - 2 month before 9/11 } that could fill at least 2 seasons of shows.
    A Network that had some guts could easily create a take-off of this profession and create a "Phoenix " concept that would absolutely fly very far if developed correctly. I have many contacts and stories, just reach out to land a fantastic series.

      No way it was realeased in 2011-2012?! I just watched Barbie (I did Barbieheimer) a few days ago and this was recommended right after I got back from the theater. I was so excited to see a new show with Margot Robbie in the 1960s, but damn I'm bummed it's cancelled.
      On the other hand tho this is really cool getting to see Margot when she was starting out in her acting career, it's def a contrast to how much of a star she is now in Barbie

    I also used to watch this show when it first aired on ABC. I liked Colette played by Karine Vanasse. Anyway, a lot of great actors came on this show including David Harbour, Goran Visnjic, Ann Dowd, William Abadie, and of course Margot Robbie, who was not famous at the time and she was really great in this. I remember ABC cancelling a slew of good shows after just a season back then.

    I want to look for episode 2 of this series film and when I read UA-camr-watchers comments I find out it was cancelled. What a pity! I am glad to see the lifestyle of America in 1963 over the lens/ view of this movie, and I am curious about the MI6 mission and about Ms. Bridge, what happened with her and made her had to leave her fiance? How Kate will carry out her duty, and how Laura faces with their parents because of hiding away when both (she and her sister) back home from work?... So sorry for skillful handsome actors/ skillful beautiful actresses and the whole equipe // ekip / team of this 'Pan Am'
