Learning To Ride A Three Wheeler On Some INTENSE Trails..

  • After getting this old 1984 Honda ATC 200ES Big Red the night before a trail ride I had to learn how to ride this thing, and FAST. They are notorious for causing injuries but with a little bit of patience and understanding they are just like anything else you have to learn how to manage them.
From mud holes and hill climbs this old three wheeler put my skills to the test and I had a blast throwing it around but man will it wear you out. Not to mention battling a dirty carb the entire day which never let the engine idle properly.

Love the three wheeler content. If you really shift your weight around it helps you not flip over when going over uneven terrain

I agree. You need to throw your weight out over the pegs.

I did break my leg on one. A 200x hit a cross rut foot slipped off the peg, next thing I know I'm under the 3 wheeler. That was when I was 50, 59 now and still riding 3 wheelers😎

Think of the three wheeler like a three legged table. If the table starts to fall over to the right, weight the left side of the table left of the single leg. For example, when turning left get your weight toward the left hand grip and weight the left footpeg using your body english to bring the push the rear around.

Body shifting IS a must, it's not a dirt bike, you cant sit in the middle of the seat. You HAVE to be ready to literally hang off one side or the other and you can make any turn.Stand up and lean forward on uphill runs, helps to not flip.KEEP YOUR FEET on the pegs (get bigger one or the foot nets) or the back wheels WILL grab them and you will be hurt. You had a nice enough ride, good job so far.Just ride and learn and the fun will be more every ride.

When you get hung up with a 3 wheeler of 4 wheeler you have to lean off to one side and rally jerk it over and kinda tip it on it's side to try and get one wheel to dig down and grab traction. It's not like a bike where you just lean back for traction.

As a 14 yo the first mechanics I learned to do was clear a carburetor jet-took me about 2 hours to just to understand what was wrong, basically de-constructed my little 110's carburetor. A small metal wire worked fine, but it was definitely strange wondering why it ran with the choke on (or off, mhmm can't remember now :(

Putting your foot down on any vehicle with two rear wheels can result in your foot/ankle being drug under it... Especially at any speed over 10 mph. While I know that's strange to a dirt bike guy it's probably not a good idea on that.
