- This week, Patrick and Michael become the office heroes by solving a long-standing problem--bathroom waits. With a Raspberry Pi, some lights, and a website, office productivity has skyrocketed. Have enough toilets at work? There are tons of different sensors available to make any home or office setting more connected.

DIY Tryin is a brand-new show about do-it-yourself solutions and maker culture from the Tekzilla team! Here on DIY Tryin, we live by the motto; "Why buy when you can make?"
The title should have read "Use a raspberry pi to fix every day problem". I thought they were going to list a bunch of cool ideas, not one lame one about a bathroom.
Just install a bell on the bathroom door and sensitize all your colleagues to ring it once he/she done with the bathroom. Why complicate life man... ???
I have a Pi and still have no ideas for a useful need for it.
Put the sensors on the lock instead of the door jam. That way if people just close the door after they leave it will not show the bathroom as "occupied". The site will only report "occupied" if the door is locked. 95% of the time, people are going to lock the door if it is in use. Especially if they know that the bathrooms are busy and people are going to be trying to open the door if it is not locked.
why did you buy a world-viewable domain rather than just using a URL on your own LAN or publishing the dropbox page's URL? Or put a permanent file in your LAN where you find documentation and stuff, that redirects to the current actual implementation?
My friend (Peter Mitchel) said why do you not have a queuing facility where you can book the toilet when it becomes free? You are still going to have people rushing to the toilet when it goes green.
Why not put webcams under the toilets? That way you know if people are in there
You made it light up in JavaScript right?
Nice idea, maybe i should try this and in place of HTML i'll just try pushing the status to firebase. This will give me a real-time feedback.
The BS part is so sad, when you could have made an elegant solution with Jinja2. Interesting video though :-)
should build something to measure the stink level after used to complement this project.....
Hope the washroom site does not get ddos
Why didn't you just use the pi as the server? It's easy enough and free.
3 years later and I had to check to see if I could look at your bathroom status... That was going to be my excitement for the day and you robbed me of it :(
So when the bathroom becomes available, everyone rushes to the bathroom. How about a reservation?
Talk about overengineering... Over here in Europe, we have a piece of red and green tape stuck on a washer and another washer with a "window" cut out of it attached to the lock of the door. When you lock, the washer turns around and the red piece is visible through the "window", when you unlock, the green piece is visible. A lot cheaper, a lot easier, a lot less stuff that can break.
You guys leave bathroom doors open when empty?!?
large bulbs + gaffa tape= FIRE!You will be a hero for sure when the office burns down.
Just got a pi yesterday. I wrote a program to make a LED blink. Tomorrow, I learn how to get the status of pins. I hope the pi will give me a better understanding of components and what they do.
Now the boss just needs to say "GENIOUS MAN!!", immediately after he issues NFC ID cards, so when people go to take a dump he can see who it is and deduct the time from their salory.
