Now then Matt, my siren knowledge is not quite what it should be! With that in mind, may I ask a question? These sirens are tested at regular intervals, but apart from yourself I don't see any other individuals or engineers/personnel monitoring the actual output of the siren...? Is all the testing done remotely via telecoms, or do they rely on information from locals to let them know the siren is working as it should? Regarding the comments about bad bearings, on dismantling my GP12, there was major aluminium corrosion between the back of the rotor housing and the motor, resulting in serious friction on the rotors themselves as the housings had bulged inwards at the centres. This could be the actual problem.
Heh, "Ravenstruther" pronunciation trips many people up. It's actually pronounced as "Renstree" or "Reinstree", which is totally counterintuitive I know.

the way a siren works is by forcing air out of a specifically sized hole at a fast speed. the closer the rotor is to the stator, the more air is forces through the ports, and the louder the siren is. seeing how the rotors are literally clipping the stator, it makes sense the ground is shaking. also, how ironic, the newer siren is in worse condition than an older siren! like, a lot of them.
If I remember correctly, I think this siren is louder than the hour bell Big Ben in London. I think I heard that when it’s first struck, it gets as loud as a plane taking off (136db)
Glad we finally got to hear the siren Matt. Btw I found out where the one at The State Hospital is. Not visible from the road, as it's well within the grounds
Definitely a star-delta switcher there, a very very late changeover though! Usually these contactors are pretty quick, possibly the capacitors are needing a little check up :)
I think the reason why the siren sounds two speed is because those rotor heater boxes look shorted, and if the heaters run it might effect the motor speed because they are shorting
according to another comment this thing is run on a star/delta starter which is taking way too long to switch from star to delta during operation. this is why it runs up to full speed for only around 5 seconds. its around 25 seconds on star and 5 seconds on delta.
Need to listen to the Chrysler powered siren used during the Cold War in the United States. You know it’s loud when you use a 331 cubic inch HEMI engine to run the siren lol
Putting "140 dB" in the thumbnail is very misleading. When talking about dB ratings for sirens it's typically from 100 feet. So just to clarify for those who need it: There are much louder sirens than this. The loudest in the world still being the Chrysler Air Raid Siren.
@@cyanoticspore676 the original design sort of did. The later design which was mass-produced and installed all over the country was radio controlled. (They could still be manually operated too, if needed.)
In my opinion, the reason why it changes speed *could* be due to star-delta starting of the motor. Being a much bigger and more powerful siren than the CS8, it could need to start itself in star mode to have enough torque, then switch to delta to get higher speed. Either this or rather than having shutters like the CS8, this model switches speed to change tone, either way it's definitely some kind of electrical change rather than mechanical.
