Hey bro I can tell you are kind of uncomfortable speaking in front of a camera but keep on practicing and you will definitely get better at it, and btw this video was super helpful to me and now I can finally properly expose thanks man!
Finally! I've been looking for Zebra settings for SLOG-2 production for ages. I've been using 100+ before. I've now updated for 107+ Thanks bro! Keep it up
Hey Dom, quick question about the color mode. I switched it to Cinema and now i can't remember where it was, haha! But i was wondering what you recommend using with Slog2. Also any other fine tunings in PP7?
Hey Enrique, or colour mode I use 'pro' most of the time I like the colours which seem really accurate. For Slog2 if your using LUTS or the ACES workflow then use 'sgamut' and if your manually grading it's easier to grade with 'pro'. I've got a video here [ ua-cam.com/video/SsEwlJP5NwI/v-deo.html ] with detailed picture profile settings I use the last one is for slog2 so might be useful for you .
99% of videos just tell you to over expose, but never give you any tips on how to find the ceiling for highlights without clipping. I had just taken the time to tune my eye in with trial and error but I wish I would have found this a long time ago. Good work Bro, keep it up :)
Yeah, it's at 109% but don't use the slog exposure method for cine 4, it will look bad! For cine 4 under exposing slightly(around -0.3 stops) works well :)
I still don't have a sony camera, but every now and then I need use one, and I was always unsure about the exposure. With your tips I'll be more confidend right now. Thank you so much!
Good information but I disagree with one thing you said. At around the 2:58 mark you said to adjust the exposure with aperture and shutter speed. You can't change shutter speed of you're using the 180 rule. And changing f stop might ruin the shot. Use a variable ND filter. Works great.
Hey Dom. Just found your video which i found easy to learn about. Often i found my slog3 footage to be noisey and hard to use. Your video explains why thay may be with exposure. I see you are nervous in the camera. Dont be, you have nothing to be nervous about. Thanks dude and keep the videos coming :)
I'm new to Sony land and to shooting log in general but it seems from what I'm hearing that S-log 2 is good for preserving your highlight detail-clouds in a landscape, say. So the idea is to expose to the right while staying within the generous highlight clipping limit and avoid having to pull information out of the shadows creating noise. Instead you want to crush the blacks where desired, not try to raise the shadows. Am I on track with that?
Your welcome, It depends on your camera for the a6300/6500 it's 800 and for a7sii its 1600. As long as your young the lowest available iso you'll get the best results
I work with an a7sii, and while it’s true you should preferably stay on your native ISO, that specific camera is designed to handle high ISO levels, one good advice though, would be to always use a value dividable by your native ISO, be it 3200, 6400, 12800, i’ve even gone to 25600 with very usable noise levels when properly exposed.
Thanks a lot for helping everyone out ! It must have been difficult for you to talk to the camera, just wanted to say Thanks from everyone and hope to see more informative posts like this.
Thanks for the info! Subscribed. I never knew that you shouldn't go past ISO 800 in sLog. I've set my Zebra Lower Limit to 107+ for sLog2 but no matter how much I overexpose, the zebras never show up. Any idea why? Any help would be appreciated.
Very helpful. Gave it a like. Where did you get them iso settings I thought you had to shoot at native 1600 on a7sii and 3200 0n a7si. Does it not make it pointless to shoot below as the signal is not there? I want the best from my footage but hate using strong nd filters to shoot 1/50 f.1.4 outdoors. Sure night time is easy but day forces me to shoot cine4
Glad you it was useful:) Yeah your right, different cameras and pictures profiles have diffferent native ISO, for the a6300 it's 800 I should have mas that more clear in the video. A side note: as ISO increases dynamic range decreases so generally use the lowest ISO. ND filters are the best solution, why do you hate them? Colour shifts?
Dom Blond yea just they force me to use our matte box. Sometimes I've the ronin and it adds more hassle. I am not sure about what iso to shoot at still. Should I go 1600 and go heavy with the nd or is there point to shooting iso 100 etc. I think I read it's pointless to shoot under the native as the signal is not there for the extra information. Thanks for replying 👊😃
Cheers Dom, found this really helpful as a newbie to video and Slog, thank you. You mention a native Slog ISO of 800, however with my Sony FS5 Mark II I seemed to have a locked off ISO of 2000 when choosing SLOG3, don't seem to be able to adjust it, or more to the point don't know how to. R are missing something, or do specific Sony Camera's have different ISO lower limits when using SLOG?
Yeah your got that right, specific Sony Camera's will have different native ISO when using slog. If ISO 2000 is the minimum, then it is probably the native iso for that particular camera. I should have made that more clear in the video!
Nice video. I just got my a6300 and after shooting in slog 2 and 3 and the image is still noisy at ISO 800, should I use cine 4 or would it be worse for color grading
Are you over exposing or exposing to the right? If you expose normal there will always be a lot of noise. Yeah you can use cine 4, it's still good for grading , I use cine 4 most of the time.
Sorry I should have made it more clear. For the a6300 min iso in slog is 800. But for other sony cameras it's 1600 or 3200, so you can use 1600 since that the min iso your your particular camera.
Great video you posted this some time ago. I have a question? If I set my exposure to +2 and then I have to adjust my Aperture this changes will that effect my results ?
If i need to be shooting higher iso due to lighting and all my other footage is slog 2 but you say don't go higher the 800 what should i do? thanks for the great tips u got a new subscriber.
What do you do if you can't overexpose anymore with an iso of 800? Should you bump up the ISO (if so what's the highest you'd go) or should you just use another picture profile?
I'd recommend switching to cine 4 or use no picture profiles. When you increase ISO higher than the native(800 for a6300 S-log), you will have very noisy footage and dynamic range will be decreased. For exposure with s-log try to adjust everything thing except shutter speed and ISO, this will always give the best results:)
Slog-3 clips at 100? Hmm. I tried this out on my camera and I noticed that it was lower (dont recall exactly, think it was around 85) I over-exposed and I set my zebras at 100, nothing. I lowered it and realized that around 85 no matter how much more I would expose nothing would happen. The zebras would stop showing. Even if the image was pure white. It would only show to a certain point, which again, I forget what value it was but I think it was 85 or so -- Ill test it out again and do a video on it
Great video. Thanks for the zebra exposure info!! Greatly appreciated. Any way you can make a video showing what the proper exposure levels would be once the log footage is brought into post? Meaning, once you've brought the exposure down etc. thanks!
Your welcome :) I'm going on holiday for the summer in a few days, so I don't think I'll be able to make it before I go. I might make a video on this specifically but that will be quite long from now. Currently I'm working on a colour correction tutorial which will be ready soon, it will cover exposure correction to normal levels. But it's quite simple not in too much depth, as I'm trying to make it understandable for people new to video editing.
Hello. Thanks a lot for sharing. I always had difficulty recording with slog so that I switched off the color profiles. But in post processing I have the problems in the shadows. I think I'll give slog another shot. Thanks to you. Best regards, Stefan
Hi Dom, great video! One quick question. I saw your Std+Range set to 5 +-3. Did you set it accustom to Slog2? What does those numbers in Std+Range means anyway? Cheers!
I was testing out zebras for cine 4 and cine 1 exposure settings(still in progress). STD+Range basically describes the exposure region where the zebra are displayed.
Hey thanks a lot man just rushing my thoughts before watching the entire video in case I forget: Do Zebra "standards" for each profile vary upon sensor? Say for example the a7s', I know slog2 base ISO is 3200, but I got the a7iii, and there slog2 base ISO is 800... As far as I know (very little yet), zebra levels should be the same, but damn so many UA-camrs doing tutorials, and of course so many of them talking about different zebra levels for the same slog2 profile. I know for sure though, that you are speaking based on the "industry standards" zebra levels...
Your welcome :) The shots of me talking are on the a6300 with the 35mm f1.8 OSS and the shots of the a6300 were recorded on the Canon 7d with the (canon) 50mm F1.4.
I just wanted to say that while you're presentation may not be as quite slick as some other UA-camrs (yet). That doesn't matter. What matters to me is that I have found this video to be THE MOST USEFUL of all of the ones I have watched to learn about shooting S-Log 2 & 3 on a DSLR (and I have sampled many). I also appreciate that you're very clear and concise. Your video is half as long as some of the others and yet more informative! I could not find this video the other day and I was afraid you'd taken it down. Fortunately I had saved your settings for S-Log 2 on my camera and I was able to do that shoot. I am very glad I found it again today though so I can reset my a6500 to shoot for S-Log 3 Cine for my next client (CNN International). I'm guessing S-Log 3 Cine also clips at 100 IRE?? Thank you for the truly useful information! Please keep up the good work!!!
Excellent experimentation, yet, flaw result, in a way at least. Let me tell you first that I already subscribed to your channel, but I also like to point that this method will lead to inconsistent grey levels between shoot that should share them. which will become color correcting a nightmare, mostly with skin tones. What I mean is if you have the same white balance scene one with a very contrasty situation and another with no contrast at all inside of the same scene (E.G inside a room with a window; one shot against the window and the other to the corner where is much darker) , exposing this way will result in a very different grey levels (and a complete different latitude) that later will become almost impossible to match. Personally, I think that cannot be an Easy way to expose anything, it always has to to be a conscious approach to it. Anyway maybe saying that between 2 and 2.5 stop increasing is a good starting point with s-log 2 footage is not a bad advise since this will increase grey levels over 35% (minimum to not get noise in s-log) over 45% where color reproduction should be much accurate. PD: Excuse my English if incorrect, and Keep it up! great job!
Question, So for Slog 2 on the a7s2 the minimum iso is 1600? can i still use this method? I just want to properly expose in daylight and at night as well.
Yes, you can still use this method just stick with the min(native) iso 1600 for the a7sii. This method works well for daylight slog, but for night i'd recommend cine 4. Night scenes will always have a much lower dynamic range compared to day. So using s-log won't have any benefits for the night, but cine 4 records more data in the darker regions giving better results.
Hey thank you so much for this. This really saved my life lol. It decently helped out a lot. My footage looks a lot better after trying out a few of your tips. Thank you brother
I used this method in my latest video where I used slog for the first time. However, my highlights were still clipped. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong from looking at the footage?
Just had a look at the footage, not that much clipping. I think the problem was the water splash clipping. It's hard to expose for that as I'm assuming when you set the exposure there was no water splash(brightest part of image). Also Sony cameras record beyond the 100% legal range for rec709, so if you didn't bring that down in post when exported it will look clipped.
You'll have to use the RGB parade(you can search on UA-cam 'how to use rgb parade in [name of software]' it's a bit too long to explain in a comment). Then use exposure controls to bring down the highlights until the rgb parade shows all values are under 100. Are you using Final Cut Pro x? There's an easier method if you are, let me know.
For the a6300 s-log native ISO is 800, as soon as you increase this you loose dynamic range(look at dynamic range vs ISO on dxomark). So you'll still need the extra time required to grade s-log with no benefit compared with a non-log picture profile. If you need ISO 3200, use cine 4 it will give far better results.
Thank you for this tutorial Dom, great work! The image quality on this video is simply perfect. Did you use a S-log or Cine 4 profile ? And so, what color grading did you apply ? Thime
Your welcome :) Thanks, for the sections of me talking I used cine4 and just applied basic: contrast, saturation and a small white balance adjustment, the shots of the a6300 where shot on the canon 7d.
Great video Dom. I personally don't mind if you seem shy or timid in front of the camera, I think you stand out because of that. It's you in a unique way! Also I LOVE the way how all of your video's colors turn out. It's not artificial like most of the vloggers out there but organic and true to real life color. If you could do tutorial video's on Davinci resolve and importance of white balance, I think most people including me would appreciate that! just subbed.
Thank! Yeah I'm not totally comfortable in front of the camera, but I believe the content is useful. Positive comments like yours make these videos worth the effort. For colour thats exactly what I aim for, it's cool that noticed :) I will definitely be making some videos on how I colour grade and white balance, both really interesting and important topics. Really busy at the moment, but I will find time at some point to make those videos!
Awesome! I'm glad I can be encouraging but I'm simply stating facts! I've studied film and UA-cam extensively for little over a year and I know when I see a real talent. Will be looking forward to that video! Cheers.
I think you did pretty well, I know how uncomfortable it can be in front of a camera, even while alone, but you got some great information out regardless and this helped me out a lot and I thank you for that!
Respect for stepping out of your comfort zone Dom! Incredibly useful info. Your evident passion for film will override any piece to camera nerves you may encounter after a few more. I have no doubt. The more you delve into your knowledge, the easier your flow becomes. I think all videographers have a tendency to much prefer being behind the lens. Biggup.
Thanks Jordan, your comment made my day :) Yeah, I agree with you. Really like filmmaking and sharing what I learn. Over time as I get more experience with making videos, my presentation will improve. People like you make these videos worthwhile.
Hey bro I can tell you are kind of uncomfortable speaking in front of a camera but keep on practicing and you will definitely get better at it, and btw this video was super helpful to me and now I can finally properly expose thanks man!
geoff0707 yeah man he looks cold af dem scary
It’s because he’s reading.
or easier, just do a voiceover ;)
He done very well.
The first video I have seen that clearly shows an easy way to expose for SLOG2, really good, keep up the good work
Thanks!
Finally! I've been looking for Zebra settings for SLOG-2 production for ages. I've been using 100+ before. I've now updated for 107+ Thanks bro! Keep it up
That's awesome! Glad it was useful.
this is the best video explaining this I've seen in the internet in 2024, THANK YOU
Hey Dom, quick question about the color mode. I switched it to Cinema and now i can't remember where it was, haha! But i was wondering what you recommend using with Slog2. Also any other fine tunings in PP7?

Your videos are incredibly helpful man! I appreciate your concise and accurate explanations. Many other youtubers struggle with that!
Your welcome! That’s the goal of these videos :)
Do you happen to know where Cine4 clips using zebra? I've been doing some testing and its so difficult to figure out haha
Yeah, it's at 109% but don't use the slog exposure method for cine 4, it will look bad! For cine 4 under exposing slightly(around -0.3 stops) works well :)
ok cool! i'll still set it there just to be safe but i'll try underexposing now. thanks for the quick response!
Thanks for the tip! Keep it up man!
Your welcome, will do!
I still don't have a sony camera, but every now and then I need use one, and I was always unsure about the exposure. With your tips I'll be more confidend right now. Thank you so much!
hi, I'm getting noise on black objects in slog2 even on 2stop exposure, my iso was 1250, what should i do to fix this?
What camera are you shooting on?
This is the first explanation of many about exposing s-log that came right to the point. thanks, mate!
This in the only video on exposing S-Log on a DSLR that I have bookmarked. Great info', a clear explanation, and no fluff. THANK YOU!!!!!
Thanks again for another good video. What is the link to the video on your SLog workflow? Thanks
Good information but I disagree with one thing you said. At around the 2:58 mark you said to adjust the exposure with aperture and shutter speed. You can't change shutter speed of you're using the 180 rule. And changing f stop might ruin the shot. Use a variable ND filter. Works great.

Thanks man, I appreciate it!
Hey bro thank you for your videos but my slog The iso is set to 1600 mínimum how can I get 800 iso?

Armir in Germania having the same Problem. Did you figure out what the problem was ?
@@anelm.5127 No. :/

ISO 800? so I can only shoot in s log on bright summer days or under strong studio lighting?
the opposite..and NDs.
Yeah your got that right, specific Sony Camera's will have different native ISO when using slog. If ISO 2000 is the minimum, then it is probably the native iso for that particular camera. I should have made that more clear in the video!
Great Video, i got a Sony A7ARIII but with Slog 2 i can only go up to 99+, after that no zebras show up, what am i doing wrong?
Dom Blond thanks
Is it worth raising ISO to reach these levels
Really helpful - I was looking for what level to set my zebras for S-log2 and you got me right to it. Thanks man!
This might be a stupid question but my slog 3 won't let me shoot lower than 1600,but you say no higher than 800?
Sorry I should have made it more clear. For the a6300 min iso in slog is 800. But for other sony cameras it's 1600 or 3200, so you can use 1600 since that the min iso your your particular camera.
Dom Blond oh ok mate cheers for the reply
Great video you posted this some time ago. I have a question? If I set my exposure to +2 and then I have to adjust my Aperture this changes will that effect my results ?
If i need to be shooting higher iso due to lighting and all my other footage is slog 2 but you say don't go higher the 800 what should i do? thanks for the great tips u got a new subscriber.
I'd recommend shooting with cine4, as you'll get less noise and sill have decent dynamic range. That's awesome :)
This was by far the most helpful video I found on the subject. And it's fine that you're reading off a screen; the info is top notch! :) Thanks!
For exposure with s-log try to adjust everything thing except shutter speed and ISO, this will always give the best results:)
whats your camera setting for slog. Thanks
Settings I use are in this video, near the end ua-cam.com/video/SsEwlJP5NwI/v-deo.html
Hello Dom! Do you use EOSHD Pro SLOG Cinema? Will the same apply to expose correctly? Thank you!
Hey Enrique, I don't use that profile. But if it is based on slog 2 or 3, the same exposure method can be applied.
Do u always keep the exposure meter thing +2 when doing this method?
I don't really use that, for this method you only need to use the zebras.
Slog-3 clips at 100?
Hmm. I tried this out on my camera and I noticed that it was lower (dont recall exactly, think it was around 85)
I over-exposed and I set my zebras at 100, nothing. I lowered it and realized that around 85 no matter how much more I would expose nothing would happen. The zebras would stop showing. Even if the image was pure white. It would only show to a certain point, which again, I forget what value it was but I think it was 85 or so -- Ill test it out again and do a video on it
yep! Thanks u, 85 is a good value for slog 3
I'm pretty sure slog3 clips at 94-95 ?
I’ve been searching for a monitor to display luts and I didn’t even realise there is s log assist. Thanks for the info legend!
Yeah it’s a pretty useful feature. And your welcome :)
Amazing video! I wanted to ask you about the exposure level on the display, it should be always on +2.0 ? Or I can work also on +0.0 ?
Thanks! Somewhere between +1.5 to +2 would be good, but that method is quick but a bit inconsistent.
This was helpful. Thanks. Going to look for your vid on grading slog now. Keep the how to videos coming.
Your welcome, here's the first step: ua-cam.com/video/SJYdPeVNPno/v-deo.html grading video coming soon. Will do :)
Great video. Thanks for the zebra exposure info!! Greatly appreciated. Any way you can make a video showing what the proper exposure levels would be once the log footage is brought into post? Meaning, once you've brought the exposure down etc. thanks!

Hello. Thanks a lot for sharing. I always had difficulty recording with slog so that I switched off the color profiles. But in post processing I have the problems in the shadows. I think I'll give slog another shot. Thanks to you. Best regards, Stefan
Your welcome. Yeah, slog is the hardest profile to deal with. Using this method you'll get the least noise in shadows.
Love your videos, so helpful. And I really like how you're a bit uncomfortable in front of the camera, it's endearing haha. Keep up the awesome work!
Haha thanks, yeah something I need work on.
Super helpful video, thanks a lot! Keep it up :)
Good job bro, keep it the good work...
Thanks bro. You did a great job there. It helped me a lot on shooting log on sony a7iii and FX9. Regards

PD: Excuse my English if incorrect, and
Keep it up! great job!
have a look on this vid, ua-cam.com/video/QtUTjD8A0sw/v-deo.html explainnig the problems you can get in to
The closeup's really help also. Thank you.
Beautiful and simple.
Love my A7!
That's awesome, your welcome:)
How do I change Zebra's to 107? I have the A7R2 thanks
Unfortunately the a7rii only has zebras up to 100+ I don't know why Sony did that.
Dom Blond perfect! Thank you for the response I really appreciate it. I’ll give it a try and let you know how it goes.
Hey thank you so much for this. This really saved my life lol. It decently helped out a lot. My footage looks a lot better after trying out a few of your tips. Thank you brother
Your welcome! Glad it's helped you improve your footage :)
was this recorded at 24mm?
Nope, it was recorded at 35mm and 50mm
I used this method in my latest video where I used slog for the first time. However, my highlights were still clipped. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong from looking at the footage?
Just had a look at the footage, not that much clipping. I think the problem was the water splash clipping. It's hard to expose for that as I'm assuming when you set the exposure there was no water splash(brightest part of image). Also Sony cameras record beyond the 100% legal range for rec709, so if you didn't bring that down in post when exported it will look clipped.
Thank you Dom! Also, how would I bring down rec709 in post? I am pretty new to this.
No I'm using premiere, I'll look it up for that.
Great video with very helpful information. Keep up the great work. Thanks!
Thanks, I'm happy it helped :)
Good content man! Lots of good advice ! Thank you!
what do you mean its pointless to shoot in slog above iso800? what if i need 3200?
For the a6300 s-log native ISO is 800, as soon as you increase this you loose dynamic range(look at dynamic range vs ISO on dxomark). So you'll still need the extra time required to grade s-log with no benefit compared with a non-log picture profile. If you need ISO 3200, use cine 4 it will give far better results.
and when where do you expose for cine4 ?? 0? +2? or -2?
Can be used for most scenes, where the details Mee in the shadows and mid tones. And it's best to under expose slightly( -0.3 to -0.7ev)
This is damn good but seems like u were reading from a screen or is it that u nervous bro??
Great video Dom. I personally don't mind if you seem shy or timid in front of the camera, I think you stand out because of that. It's you in a unique way! Also I LOVE the way how all of your video's colors turn out. It's not artificial like most of the vloggers out there but organic and true to real life color. If you could do tutorial video's on Davinci resolve and importance of white balance, I think most people including me would appreciate that! just subbed.
Thank! Yeah I'm not totally comfortable in front of the camera, but I believe the content is useful. Positive comments like yours make these videos worth the effort. For colour thats exactly what I aim for, it's cool that noticed :)
I will definitely be making some videos on how I colour grade and white balance, both really interesting and important topics. Really busy at the moment, but I will find time at some point to make those videos!
Awesome! I'm glad I can be encouraging but I'm simply stating facts! I've studied film and UA-cam extensively for little over a year and I know when I see a real talent. Will be looking forward to that video! Cheers.
@@DomBlond You did very well.
Just got my A73. Thanks for the tip!
Your welcome! Have fun with your new camera :)
Thanks. Very useful!
You welcome!
when i preset my zebra on 109, there is no zebra longer indicatet. it disapears on my a7s m2 with minimum of iso 1600.
You need 107% for slog 2 and 100% for slog 3.
thank you and do i have preset the zebras on cine1 or 4 with -0,3 exposure ? or are zebras not neccessary ?
Thank you, man! Congrats from Brazil!
Your welcome :)
You Are just amzing, don't be shy in front of the camera I can see the time when you'll be confident and comfortable with it! :)))
Thank :) Yeah I'm working to improve it, the main issue is remembering to cover everything I planned in the video.
great video. the best I've found on exposing slog. and hey you'll get better at talking to the camera, don't worry.
Thanks :) Yeah I'll definitely work to improve with time.
Thanks dude for the awesome information, looking forward to future vids :)
Your welcome, should be uploading one in less than a week:)
Keep doing it man. Wish you the best. Thanks for the tutorial

Your welcome!
Good job. Well explained. My A6300 arrives tomorrow :-) Thanks Dom.
Thanks! You'll love it :)
Informative video, thanks.
Maybe practice being more at ease in front of the camera...you seem quite tense :)
Thanks for the feedback :) Yeah I agree, I'll be working to improve it.
I think you did pretty well, I know how uncomfortable it can be in front of a camera, even while alone, but you got some great information out regardless and this helped me out a lot and I thank you for that!
Thanks man! Yeah exactly, it's not as simple as it may seem. Happy it helped you out :)
Thank you for this great explanation of exposing the Slogs!

Good video, keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Thank you man! This really helped, just wish i would have seen your video before i went out to shoot😳
luce bastante nervioso pero explicaste muy bien. Thanks man
my s-log2 is super grainy/noise. why is that?
Not sure, there are many possible reasons. I'm gonna need more information to give you a reason. Are you shooting above the base ISO for your camera?
Thanks dude ! Super helpful!
Your welcome!
Thank you
thanks for the short helpful content !
