  • Ex-LMS 'Jubilee' Class - 45596 "Bahamas" would face some very bipolar weather, as the locomotive worked to the seaside hauling 'The Dorset Coast Express'. Paired with West Coast Railways Class 47 - 47245 "V. E. Day 75th Anniversary", the tour marked 45596's debut DCE outing, as well as its first trip to Weymouth in preservation.
The excursion, organised by the Railway Touring Company, began out of London Victoria with 45596 at the helm; travelling via Feltham to Byfleet & New Haw, where it would join the South-West Mainline. The 'Jubilee' would then make a sprint down the SWML to Weymouth. For the return working, 47245 would lift the tour out of Weymouth, hauling the tour as far as Southampton Central. Here, a reversal would see the Stanier stalwart regain control for the charge back to London, working via Romsey and Andover.
Starting the day at Egham, 45596 is captured in glorious morning sunshine heading for Virginia Water. Moving west of Basingstoke, the cameras subsequently caught "Bahamas" running 22 minutes late at Worting Junction. The tour had regained most of the lost time thanks to a shortened passenger stop at Southampton. The result, when mixed with the now deteriating weather, resulted in something of a hurried shot at Poole; where the 'Jubilee' can be seen accelerating away from the station on a final charge to Weymouth. The cameras caught up with the excursion in Weymouth, amid 45596 being serviced before the return trip.
As 47245 worked its leg of the return, the diesel is captured at Keysworth near Wareham as it worked towards the Solent. Finally, and in dying light, 45596 is seen back at the helm of the tour working away from the coast, captured at Lockerley.
All footaged filmed on Thursday the 5th of August 2021.

Absolutely amazing! Your trains over there really are amazing and I love how much more accessible steam trips are on the mainline. This locomotive is stunning and that 3-cylinder chuff is awesome! Thank you for sharing!

Thanks very much! We really are very privileged to have so many dedicated groups and individuals throughout our preservation movement. Bahamas really is a credit to the BLS.

Excellent footage as per. Keysworth is interesting as despite being a Wareham expat I don't think I have been back there since my dad took me once when I was about eight or nine, that was some 50 years ago!!

Thanks very much, Jules! Keysworth was something of a late decision, since it was recently cut back; last went there in March, and it was a firm non-starter. Would loved to have seen it 50 years ago.

Cheers, Bob! It's a pleasure to have her down this way for a season. Unfortunately, caught some of the worse of the weather at Poole, with a facing wind and the fluctuating rain.

@@TheSouthernerYTChannel That's very polite - "fluctuating rain"!!!!! Hope you're going to be chasing her some more - please!!!!!!

Great viewing! Like the idea of the 3rd rail electrification system, no horrible visual pollution, just that rail laying innocently beside the running rail! Is it a health & safety hazard?

Not an expert, but grew up on British Railway’s Southern Region southwest mainline which followed the earlier electrification of other Southern mainline and suburban routes. I envied other Regions’ electric locomotives since, apart from BR(S) electro-diesels, everything else electric came as EMUs which on SR looked like carriages with a driver’s window as did SR diesel-electric multiple units. That said, I was unaware of a high incident rate. In stations and other places or risk, the third rail had raised timber sides to offer some shielding and the third rail was situated on the opposite side of the track to the platform to reduce the risk of a fall onto the live rail. At level crossings, for example, there was/is a gap in the 3rd rail. Visually, for me 3rd scores way above overhead caternary systems, but I expect others will expound pros and cons either way. My grandfather was a Southern Railway and then BR(S) relief station master who went up and down the southwest mainline at stations like Southampton Central, Bournemouth, and Weymouth. He schooled us in ‘stand back from the edge’ in the last years of steam hauled trains and drilled the dangers of the D.C. system into us. I used to study this steel, greased serpent from the platform and sometimes followed Grandad across the tracks to visit a signal box or hop up onto a loco in the yard. Quite a thrill. It exercised a certain fascination on a young mind, rather like the London Underground tracks. As I said, not an expert, but I remember the transition as a railwayman’s grandson. I forgot - the sparking was a great thrill when we first saw/heard it at Southampton. It could not compensate for the living, breathing locos we loved, but it made the EMUs a little less boring. Sorry to rattle on. Cheers!

Thanks very much! Can't really add much to what ph ph has said.
I imagine these days, if you tried to pitch 3rd rail as a new idea, you'd face a lot more resistance from H&S parties than it has in reality. As a highly electrified, largely unprotected rail at ground level - which relies on public common sense to not go near it, doesn't paint the brightest of pictures.

Given the changeable weather, you have captured the essence and actuality with great camera work and positioning.
The wind must have been a trial for smooth panning. I hope you did not get too wet!

Thanks very much, Peter! The shot at Poole was very touch and go - unfortunately went the wrong way, but can't be helped. Just a tad damp.

So what happened with the promised return with 31806? According to the Official Statement, that's no longer happening "due to operational reasons". The blandest most meaningless official reason ever

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  3 роки тому

In reality, that reason is perfectly valid. Swanage currently only has three serviceable steam locomotives. 78018 is out for a boiler washout, leaving 31806 and 34028 to handle the two train timetable. 31806 is a Swanage loco, and home duties take priority.
