I’d say this is really when you start getting a sense of what the series is going to be like. Black Swordsman is good in its own right but in some ways feels like eating your vegetables before the main dish
I'm surprised you didn't talk about the scene on the stairs where Griffith gave his speech about who he considers an equal and true friend. It's not only one of the most impressive speeches in the manga but also a really important one for things to come.
@@thefantasynuttwork Oh wow! You replied so fast! I really enjoyed this video and I'm looking forward to hearing about your future journey with this manga! Thanks once again!
I'm a star wars fan, LOTR fan, fantasy and sci Fi in general has always been my bag. Nothing, and I mean nothing, has floored me as much as berserk. All the way to 364 final chapter. I envy your journey, wish I could read it for the 1st time again!
Yup, among any and all forms of art across all mediums, Berserk stands alone at the top. The difference between 1 and 2 for me is like the difference between 2 and 10.
I miss the days of not knowing what was next, of not knowing anything about this series. Enjoy the arc man, it’s got so much beautiful detail in the panels and the plot itself, it’s easy to miss some key points that point towards how the characters will change. I love golden age arc, and while it’s not my favorite arc like most people’s, it’s great and is the solid foundation of what the rest of the series will build off of. My one recommendation is to savor it slowly, I made the mistake of reading thru it quickly instead of appreciating the little details.
Hey thanks for that, I totally understand that feeling. I've had it with many or my fav book series and I've purposely trying to pace myself with Berserk so I can really enjoy it. Thanks for the comment 😊
As a long time berserk fan I just wanna say it’s soo awesome watching you guys react to berserk for the first time. I hope you guys continue to enjoy berserk. With the casca situation, she was indeed on her period. I think the whole thing is to open guts’ eyes to her issues that he had not even considered and show that once people open up to guts he is far more empathetic. Also love hearing your theories, really interesting stuff.
Gabino attacks guts before guts kills him so it was more self defence than murder also yes casca was ordered by griffith to keep guts warm when he was injured.
Hey there new to the channel and ive greatly enjoyed this discussion, always nice to see people discovering berserk for the first time and seeing your point of view. Regarding Caska feeling ill during the battle this is due to her period , for some women periods can be very painful and include other symptoms such as nausea and dizziness i believe(i had a friend who had to be taken to the infirmary during class because of this). And also when Guts says to her that it must be hard to be a woman , i think he tries to sympathise with her (in his own very crude and awkward way) as it must be difficult having to deal with such painful occurrences and being exposed to prejudices thats comes along with the times (medieval setting) which even Guts despite good intentions is also falling prey to such thinking. The scene when Guts rescues her from the river and keeps her warm in the cave is a callback to when she had to do the same for him when he first joined the band of the hawk , he probably views this as sort of repaying his debt in my mind . This also brings them closer together having this shared experience and allows her to share her backstory and they come to understand each other more which is a nice way to wrap up this volume. Another scene ( which is one of my favorite of the series) is when Guts come upon Griffith having a chat with Charlotte. After having been through a traumatizing experience where he saw the door slowly being opened he lunged at it for fear of being discovered and is surprised to find that he has impaled an innocent child who just a few moments ago he saw himself in. Then on top of that he had fight and be chased by a bunch of guards and excape through the sewers , all ragged and filthy he stumbles upon Griffith who then goes on about how he only considers someone a friend someone who is truly his equal and has a goal of their own. This comes as a shock to Guts who until this point has been living his life aimlessly from battle to battle has finally begun to settle down and find his place in this world hears such words coming from the mouth of the person whos probably the closest thing to a friend hes ever had in this world must be incredibly painful. It shows just how much distance between them there really is which is further emphasized by the depiction of Guts at the bottom of the stairs while Griffith is lonely at the top , great symbolism. How much impact this event will have on Guts life moving forward ? this remains to be seen. Sorry if this doesnt make sense im just rambling cant wait to hear more from you guys in your next review ill definitely be watching.
I absolutely loved reading all of that! You definitely brought up good points and conclusions from them. I think we feel very much the same or are at least posing the same questions The moment with Griffith and Charlotte is excellent and I regret not mentioning it
Finished Deluxe Vol 2 this morning and listening to this was such an awesome way to digest everything! Looking forward to watching these discussions as I continue making my way through! Awesome chat, Jimmy!
Duuuuuuude I had no idea you were reading Berserk!!! That’s so awesome. These videos are some of my favorite I’d ever made so I’m glad you’re watching them hahah
@@thefantasynuttwork Hahaha yeah man! Read the first deluxe a few months ago and enjoyed it...picked up Deluxe 2 on a whim this past week and it was a huge step-up for me and I'm tempted to dive right into 3 lol the characters and the art are next level!
You are starting with the best manga so you will notice when starting to read others that berserk is actually the one that you compare with and realize it's just on another level
I just caught up to berserk in the last week and it has quickly become my favorite story of all time. I subscribed to listen to your journey of this great manga! Also here for Vinland!
oh boy I would love to see a reaction/review from a fresh berserk fan/content creator like you. would like to see that shock value/excitement gleaming into the eyes of a new berserk fan 🤣🤣
My first contact with berserk was in 2016, not a good moment in my life, but, in a way that i can not tell exactly how, it help me to get through this (i made a tattoo of the curse mark also to never forget about berserk) . It´s a completely amazing and human history, definitely makes you enter in contact with a lot of fellings inside you, in a very unique way. Thanks for you videos bro, they are very special for me and for a lot of peoples.
That's awesome to hear and I'm glad it was such a profound experience for you. I see myself getting a lot of these themes and we are excited to keep diving in. Thanks for being here 🙌
Awesome to hear you guys discuss Berserk and to see you so hyped about it, kinda makes me relive my own journey with Berserk from back in the day. I'll eagerly await the next review, speaking of which, the last two chapters of the next deluxe are some of the best chapters of the entire series.
Berserk is a series that holds a very special place in my heart. This is one of my favorite arcs in general of anything I’ve read. I’m not sure how I’d rank it within berserk itself but yeah. I definitely have issues with the series but I love it. I’m very happy you’re giving berserk the time and going through with it. I was very sad to see Miura pass away this year but a small part of me is happy to see more people reading berserk and giving it a shot. I’m excited to see what you think of the rest of the golden age arc and the rest of the series ❤️✨
You will love monster. It's also an awesome manga with real depth and organic characters. Tha author naoki urasawa is also one of the best mangaka. I am now reading 21th century boys, another of his works and I can tell he is also a master at his work, such as miura. Check it out if you fell like it sometime
Love the review but one thing I wish you talked about is Griffith’s talk with Charlotte on who he considers a true friend and his view on dreams and how it drives people and gives them there purpose. I recommend really looking into that moment because it’s one of the most important moments in this arc. it’s fine to miss things with anything on the first read. Nonetheless love the energy and Insight you bring from a non manga reader perspective.
Crying at the mention of Gohan and Piccolo 😂😂 The stuff with Guts being averse to Griffith's affection and people getting near him in general can be seen as a response to his trauma as you mentioned. If you go back to deluxe volume 1 there's a part where he yells not to be touched, and that occurs again when he's a mercenary before he meets the Band, and it clicks because you understand why he reacted that way now. As far as that scene of the hand holding the behelit, it's pretty iconic, because the text on that page is used for the intro of each episode in the 1997 anime. Here's the clip if you're interested, no spoilers: ua-cam.com/video/KJK-dcTa_rg/v-deo.html I really love that wolf scene where Guts seems to give up yet his body reacts and fights back anyways. It lends the impression that despite his lack of purpose, and his recklessness, deep down he still wants to survive. I was literally typing up that when I read ASOIAF, having never seen GoT, I imagined Varys looking like Minister Foss lol but you made the comparison before I could haha Also yup, she was on her period. I really like Guts' line "must be hard being a woman" followed by him vigilantly protecting her. Guts has a very rough exterior, and is even a dick at times as you pointed out, but he's a softie on the inside lol. I also really like how you mention Griffith sort of preying on Casca's trauma to get a new recruit. She sees him as this savior figure, yet the reader understands it's not that simple and he may have more motives. Oh and I can't believe you guys didn't mention Griffith's dream speech and his idea of what a true friend is! Those scenes have always been special to me for many reasons, but knowing that drawing was Miura's passion, or his dream you could say, to the point that he sacrificed much in terms of his personal life, the final line from Griffith really resonates with me now: "A man should envision such a lifetime once. A martyr to the god named dream". Anyways sorry if that comment ran too long, I really had a lot of fun listening to this and I'll be eager to look forward to both the next episodes of this and Vinland since things are heating up in both series where you guys currently are. Thank you!
I really appreciate this comment, thorough and well thought out! We actually talked about the moment you mentioned after we stopped recording, I wish we had remembered 😅😅
Finally saw the video on my commute from work. Absolutely AWESOME, again I can’t stress how excited I am with you guys reading Berserk (Vinland saga as well, but more Berserk lol). I’ve been reading this since 7-8th grade (I turned out fine LOL). After Miura’s unfortunate passing, I caught up to it and read the last chapter on my 31st birthday. Going back to this series as an adult has given me a greater appreciation for it. I used to think it was about the Guts hype train and killing monsters, that although I was aware of the themes about dreams etc. they do not have the impact that they do with me as an adult. And Casca WAS on her period, if the effects were exaggerated is a valid point, but that is why she was not on top of her A game there. Can’t wait for the next video, I absolutely loved you guys theory crafting, stating your reactions and opinions on story beats and the art etc. I really dislike when “reviews” just lazily state what’s going on in the story and do not react, give their opinion, or theory craft (not that all 3 are required). This is a great format and I will be extremely hyped to consume the future videos.
Hey we both appreciate this comment and how much passion you bring! We love giving our reactions and trying to guess what's coming next. I think Berserk lends itself to theory crafting with just how bizarre it is lol
I also to want bring up a lot what berserk has took inspiration from and the amount of knowledge Muira has taken when he was still here with us. Raging to different beliefs like Frederick Nietzsche philosophy, Carl yung's psychology to norse mythology, Christianity, Judaism, gnosticism, Hinduism, alchemy and the occult. Some of these will be extremely relevant later on and I can't wait to see both of your reactions 😀🔥
Berserk is good. Real good. I've been trying to get back into reading after not reading for pleasure since before I was in college. But I struggle a lot as I cannot visualize things in my head very well. Seeing you reading Berserk earlier this month has led me to start reading Manga again which I also hadn't done in over a decade. I've already blown through a entire series in the past 2 weeks. Its been great. I'd like to reread beserk but I cannot find the hard back volumes anywhere near me.
Catching up on these, will certainly keep watching as I progress! It's funny that you both were weary of Griffith in this video after seeing him in Black Swordsman, because for whatever reason, my short memory had me loving his charismatic ways in this volume. Your description of him as a cult leader is so accurate -- I think he was evening charming me as the reader!
Hey man, love your review. Berserk is my favourite manga of all time since I first discover it. Can't wait to know more about your opinion on the golden age arc. Keep up the good work, you earn my subscribe.
Good stuff! It’s cool to see you two feeling out what exactly this story is and what it’s going for, as well as how manga in general does it’s visual storytelling: its symbolism, it’s presentational embellishments, it’s unspoken feelings of characters, the composition of a panel, the narrative created in how they are stung together in succession; the common tools in the manga artist toolbox, and how these are played with. I won’t comment on wether the moon holds supernatural properties in the story or not, but symbolically speaking, I feel it stands for Gut’s estrangement and loneliness. Like you said, he’s trying to find a purpose and a place in life. As you also said, Guts is frequently framed with the moon, I think to underscore his feelings of loneliness. Good manga are just packed with meaningful visual metaphor, emotive framing that does characterization more than words can do, hitting home all the more with the striking illustrations.
Beautiful comment and I value this kind of discussion a lot. Thanks for it and I loved all that you said here. I did think of Gus in that moon moment as a lone wolf.
Personally I have always felt like the Golden Age Arc was put on way too much of a pedestal. Yes I think it's amazing and I love reading it but I think some of the later arcs are just as good if not better. People glorify the golden age arc so much when I feel like all of Miuras work should be equally appreciated. (Not talking about you btw I am just talking about some parts of the Berserk fanbase)
It was a pleasure to hear you both talk about volume 2. I will try to answer some doubts you have posed, I could be wrong and maybe I should reread the series from the beginning (I certainly will). I will not spoil anything about future volumes, I promise. :) Regarding the moon theory, it is interesting, I had never thought about this before so I'm not sure. When Guts fell in that valley maybe he was unconscious for at least one night and one day and woke up the next night so the moon changed size for that reason.. or it is bigger to symbolize that he is focused only on it (showing his point of view) and therefore he begins to think about the meaning of everything that is happening to him. Instead for the fight with the buckets of water I believe that here for the first time Guts experiences and discovers a true friendship and we see them both playing like children, I don't think the two have loving wishes for each other at that moment. I could be wrong but I think this way. I do not remember if it is specified where he got the new broadsword from. For Guts the sword is like an extension of his body, he only knows the way of the sword and only trusts it, he would never part with it even while he sleeps. I think he either got a suitable one for himself in the Hawk Squad armory or found it on the battlefield or someone gave it to him.
I really enjoy looking at Golden Age as a coming of age story, where you have these 3 teenagers (and the rest of the Hawks too) figuring out their feelings, and working through their issues together. They're a found family of outcasts, and after every battle they get just a little bit more recognition, and you want to see them all rise to the top. I think some of the most facinating moments for me are those rare instances where Griffith lets his walls down. Doesn't happen often, but I take away so much every time. I think there's a big difference in how he acts / speaks vs. how some of these hard decisions actually make him feel deep down. And I definitely see a love triangle, where Casca loves Griffith, but Griffith loves Guts. Romanticly or not, Griffith definitely is in love with Guts, lol
I mean it's fairly common to experience nausea and other symptoms during periods. it's something she doesn't know very well and there's not much help for her considering the times. I personally think that adds to her idk cool factor? being able to fight while being hindered by your own body. 36:13 so what happened in that scene where Guts was being a bit sexist is more nuanced than that so they have been fighting together for a bit now and Guts knows she's a strong fighter a lot better than the other men in the band of the hawk in that scene, Guts knows Casca pretty well and guts can see she's slowing down and having a harder time keeping up this is a life or death situation so he purposefully gets under her skin to motivate/piss her off to try to get her to keep going. I mean you see guts smile when she gets pissed and starts walking ahead of guts. great talk btw not a hate comment I still very much love the chat and convos can't wait for the next one and sorry for such a long comment much love.
Don't ever apologize for the long comment, I'm here to discuss and love reading them. All valid points you bring up and I think Casca and Guts relationship, while messy at times, is one of my favorite things about this series so far. Hoping to have our Berserk Deluxe 3 discussion out in the next 2 weeks
@@thefantasynuttwork wow nice cant wait to see your reaction to the next one you guys have a lot of good commentary and interesting conversations so far you guys have done the best job talking about berserk and sharing you thoughts about it imo very entertaining.
Hey man! You should react to Gut's theme on video, it truly brings something special to the experience. (also recommend hearing it while reading, I'm completely in love with this theme since it's something that u would think it doesn't fit Guts.)
Depressing fist pumping is the most accurate depiction of my mood reading this series. No but great vid and welcome fellow struggler and may you always be able to affix your bones against the raging tides.
Most berserk fans (aka strugglers) are pretty kind online as a whole which is pretty abnormal for any online community. This is such a great series, enjoy your ride! I have reread the series many times and seems like every time, I pick up a detail or 2 I missed or totally misinterpreted. Subscribed and will follow your journey. I’m also a fan of GRRM, Vinland Saga, so I’ll check out those videos as well!
@@thefantasynuttwork I will also say, most questions you guys are posing are questions we all had when reading and most questions will be answered in due time! I rarely comment story details because I don’t want to spoil but (like watching someone watch the red wedding the first time) I can’t wait to see your thoughts as you get deeper and deeper into this series.
39:40 Idk if it was already answered but yes. she layed naked with him to warm Guts. he lost a lot of blood and was cold because of that. BUT it was Griffiths order and she didn't like it. thats (i think ) was why she punched him
Sorry to leave a other comment, but about the period thing: yes, that is exactly why she couldn't fight properly. After Guts undresses her to keep her warm he notices blood between her leg and he's first like "oh no, she is wounded" and then realizes that she is not "wounded"
Love new people read this series cause somehow its slightly different for each persons perspective. Also once you finish rereading give you so much revelations of the story, also berserk was my first tattoo.
I’m literally about to go to sleep and I see this, I can’t start watching this now cuz if not I won’t sleep for another 2-3 hours just from pure hype. Gonna check it out tomm 100%
the part where they took all their clothes off was because all their clothes were drenched guts thought she was sick she couldn't move and he couldn't make a fire or that would have alerted the enemy that was looking for them. 35:09
Yes Caska is on her period during that battle and yeah it's definitely used to show that it's difficult being a woman in a world of mercenaries and despite that she's still the 3rd best warrior in the Hawks. Griffith himself is a very ambiguous character. We don't get to see a lot of what goes on in his head and why he does the things that he does and what little we do get is either cold logic or leaves us with more questions than answers. Also I find it genuinely interesting you see him as almost like a cult leader. That never crossed my mind, but now that you mention it I can see elements of that early in the story tho I wouldn't say he's quite that.
This is playlist that I made for the Golden Age Arc with iconic Berserk songs that you can use to enhance the experience while reading the manga in certain moments if you wish to do so. Four songs, they’re pretty straight forward. ua-cam.com/play/PLizeOw7LgJEWTPnkwv0K0V6HoIDrDVld4.html Behelit - creepy and dark moments Guts’ theme - emotional, deep, philosophical moments (dreams, bonfire) Forces - war/battle Take the Wheel - war/battle
Shout outs to Andrew for using the playlist on the Volume 3 discussion 🙏 it really does enhance the experience when used sparingly. Thank you guys I’m so fricken hyped for the next video.
This is great, keep it up. I love Berserk, and I love listening to peoples perspective on it. You guys been doing a great job going through it so far. I’d like to hear more about you guys opinion on the various people you meet in the story. I do agree Vos is a bro though.
I don't know if you're still reading these but some scenes that I'd like you to revisit are the interactions between Griffith and the princess, like the one in the hunt and the one near the fountain. I feel like you didn't give them enough importance since you didn't talk about them much, but I cannot blame you, it seems like a lot of fans that have finished the series undervalue how crucial those conversations were later on and might even misunderstand Griffith because of it. I cannot tell you why they matter without spoiling, but they are important to keep in mind for later.
New video will be out next week actually! They were def big moments, I just missed them in my notes, unfortunately I won't be able to catch everything every time. But we will do our best!
berserk and dragon ball have a special spot in my heart but if you ever wanna get into anime you MUST watch cowboy bebop (sci-fi bounty hunter tragedt) you're gonna love it. other animes you would 100% love are monster(best villain in fiction no cap.) , code geass (which is a mécha anime with super powers and big robots but there is way more to the story !) enjoy the read
not sure if you know but when you get to about the middle of volume 13 of the non deluxe versions (so deluxe 5), but there is a lost chapter that didn't make it to publication in volume editions from the original magazine release. there is a lot of debate as to whether the chapter is canon, my personal recommendation is that you read the chapter and then decide on the canonicity. personally I think it's still one of the best chapters of berserk. please talk about it when you get to it. chapter 83 or the lost chapter and is pretty easy to find online in English. also if you get into anime and its associated mediums further , I recommend getting into the Nasuverse
Vinland omnibus 3 and 4 will close out the first story arc so I'd recommend doing both. Also I may have missed it, but if you didn't mention it, the scene where Guts listens to Griffith tell Charlotte about his idea of friendship is a really good look into Griffiths head and Guts' uncertainty about his life.
To clear things up without spoiling, there are multiple behelits, a behelit is what turns a human into a demon as long as there is a sacrifice as we saw with the count and his wife in the black swordsman arc
Do you get long winded comments for other videos on other subjects? Berserk is what got me into manga, and is easily the best story I’ve ever read. Thanks for covering it. Edit: I enjoy the fact that your first review was 17 minutes and this one was almost 3 times as long. As you get deeper it just needs more.
I agree and I think discussion is more productive and illuminating than me yelling at my camera 😂 Some books definitely get some super awesome long winded comments and it's great. I'm all about the discussion! Thanks for checking out the videos 😁
This is my last comment, I don't want to bother I loved watching you guys discuss and get into the conclusions complementing each other. Caska was on period and after Griffith and gutts fight gutts was greatly wounded and needed some assistence and Griffith told her that it's a woman job to keep a man warm, than she laid with him naked. later on he does the same for her in the forest scene. Also , there is a 1997 adaptation of the golden age, it's a great anime despite its low budget and being this old. You can fell that the people who did it loved berserk as much as us.
Berserk changed me as a man. I feel like I found a part of myself that was always there and always felt like was trying to come out. Berserk forced that part of me all the way out and I'm a more complete person because of Miuras life's work
As far as the Golden Age swords go, Guts has a few of them. Their origins are not really discussed as it’s probably as mundane as Guts commissioning a sword to his own specifications from the local armorer. Will that change with future gear? We shall see…..
So the thing about periods is that they affect every woman differently. They can range from feeling like a light slap on the face to feeling like you are being repeatedly punched in the groin. Now imagine having to deal with a bad period and the exertions of war.
Casca was definitely on her period. As a woman I can tell you that each persons periods are different.for some it’s quick, light and easy. For others it’s long, heavy and painful. It can be on schedule or be at random. I’ve had light and easy, and I’ve had periods where it felt like there was a hot knife carving out my uterus.
Our lived experiences are different.I don’t what it’s like to be a man. There are pros and cons to each experience. I also have to say that even though Gutts comment on women in the battle in battle was sexist, but you also have to remember that a womans chances of escaping the battlefield not assaulted in any way is very low. Not saying that Casca can’t defend herself. I’m just saying that her chances escaping unharmed are low if the man/men are trying to assault her before they kill her. That is a fact of battle. And Gutts isn’t the only one that has sexist views. Griffith tells Casca that it’s her duty as a woman to help keep men warm with her body.
for me Griffiths words with "you will be mine" etc are not ment romanticially or sexuall but kinda Slave like. He "owns" Guts and decides what to do with him
@@thefantasynuttwork yeah I finished Berserk too this year Amazing. I do hope I can get my hands on the Deluxe Version. I love hard cover and it's a bit bigger
Also if you really like rock music there's a band that have been inspire by berserk and one of the songs is about zodd and imo it's fucking epic: ua-cam.com/video/GXkszF8Kq0Q/v-deo.html I would also highly suggest the guts theme from the 90s anime. It perfectly capture the calm and peacefulness of berserk soft moments. Also it was a big meme: ua-cam.com/video/vZa0Yh6e7dw/v-deo.html And the really dark one which really tells guts dark upbringing as a child soldier that only knew how to fight in thr front line in war ua-cam.com/video/t3NJ1tmjs94/v-deo.html
You're spot on about the romance between Griffith and Guts. I think there's definite romantic tension there. Casca even says "it's as if... it's as if" when telling Guts how she feels jealous of Griffith's attention to Guts implying that it's "it's as if he's in love with you." Guts even leaves the Hawk's because he wants to be at Griffith's side rather under him without realizing Griffith already saw him as an equal. It's basically one big breakup story.
casca was on her period yes... a pretty bad one at that. Guts realized this, which is why he was more of an ass than usually. I mean she unnecessarily endangered herself and the people around her because she didnt want to miss out. That is also where the 'sexist' comments came from. I dont think guts or anyone else doubted cascas prowes in battle. She was a captain for a reason.
14:00 🤣🤣🤣 hmm I wonder if the moon will have a part of the show 🤣 36:13 yes she was on her period 39:47 griffith told her to, which made her digusted by his decision 41:56 to also clarify that guts even when he was a child would always have a sword which almost as big as he is. Making it kind of sense he would then get the large slabbed metal sword. Also practicing swing his sword with one hand which obviously makes sense why he's able to carry that big ass sword with one hand And also notice when guts is after a rough situation he always swings his sword in frustration. From the top of my head, the situation where casca blames him for putting griffith in danger against zodd. And after he get "assaulted" by Donovan and is told he was sold by his father. Both of these scene I think have guts swing his sword in heavy thinking.
@@thefantasynuttwork I remember where I left off. It was the Milleon Falcon Arc. I was about halfway through that. Guts got his Berserker armor. Golden Age Arc is brilliant storytelling. But the latter arcs felt shoehorned with hentai shit like the demon horse in the Conviction Arc lol.
I read Berserk to the Knight Artorias theme music from dark souls, and later on in the series to the guts theme. Both helped make it even more epic! Artorias was even based on guts!
Yeah for sure. Reading it with the 1997 series soundtrack made it more epic. I would match the panels to the music based on what's going on so if there was a battle I would play "forces" or "murder", if there was something sad, I would play guts theme. Man what an amazing experience this series is! Oh and you will a lot of Dark Souls in Berserk. Actually, it's the other way. You find a lot of Berserk in Dark Souls.
The Golden Age Begins!

With the casca situation, she was indeed on her period. I think the whole thing is to open guts’ eyes to her issues that he had not even considered and show that once people open up to guts he is far more empathetic. Also love hearing your theories, really interesting stuff.
Oh and one more thing, casca was naked making sure guts stayed warm whilst he was wounded in his sleep. This was upon Griffiths request
@@tom9614 okay sweet I was right about that and Andrew was right about the other piece. Really appreciate the information and kind response 😃
@@thefantasynuttwork no worries man, you guys are doing great picking on up on stuff. If you have other questions feel free to ask them man!
@@tom9614 thanks!!
Gabino attacks guts before guts kills him so it was more self defence than murder also yes casca was ordered by griffith to keep guts warm when he was injured.
Yeah I probably was being hyperbolic, it was definitely out of self defense
I think we feel very much the same or are at least posing the same questions
The moment with Griffith and Charlotte is excellent and I regret not mentioning it
Very well put, sir 👏 pretty much sums up a lot of what I wanted to say myself, only this was much more thorough 👌
@@TallGuyReads it gets so legendary, I’m almost caught up and it’s one of my favorite stories ever
@@thefantasynuttwork Yesssss, love to hear it!
You are starting with the best manga so you will notice when starting to read others that berserk is actually the one that you compare with and realize it's just on another level
I could see it
There are many great Mangas, but berserk is the king, without question.
I just caught up to berserk in the last week and it has quickly become my favorite story of all time. I subscribed to listen to your journey of this great manga!
Also here for Vinland!
New Vinland video should be out next week! Glad to have you
oh boy I would love to see a reaction/review from a fresh berserk fan/content creator like you. would like to see that shock value/excitement gleaming into the eyes of a new berserk fan 🤣🤣
Haha it's captivating!
Thanks for being here 🙌
I hope you are in a better place mentally and physically right now. Much love ❤️
Awesome to hear you guys discuss Berserk and to see you so hyped about it, kinda makes me relive my own journey with Berserk from back in the day. I'll eagerly await the next review, speaking of which, the last two chapters of the next deluxe are some of the best chapters of the entire series.
Ohhhhh I'm so excited! Next episode will be Vinland and then we will be right back to my boy Guts
Thanks! This is a series that has such a passion around it. I'm glad to be diving into this and experiencing what has impacted so many people
You will love monster. It's also an awesome manga with real depth and organic characters. Tha author naoki urasawa is also one of the best mangaka. I am now reading 21th century boys, another of his works and I can tell he is also a master at his work, such as miura. Check it out if you fell like it sometime
Berserk my favorite, but monster is #2. Its brilliant
I had just forgotten unfortunately, I even had it written down and missed it, my apologies
@@thefantasynuttwork no problem man I’m just glad your giving manga a try 😂.
Crying at the mention of Gohan and Piccolo 😂😂
The stuff with Guts being averse to Griffith's affection and people getting near him in general can be seen as a response to his trauma as you mentioned.
Here's the clip if you're interested, no spoilers: ua-cam.com/video/KJK-dcTa_rg/v-deo.html
I really love that wolf scene where Guts seems to give up yet his body reacts and fights back anyways. It lends the impression that despite his lack of purpose, and his recklessness, deep down he still wants to survive.
I was literally typing up that when I read ASOIAF, having never seen GoT, I imagined Varys looking like Minister Foss lol but you made the comparison before I could haha
Also yup, she was on her period.
@@thefantasynuttwork it's the least I can do! And ah haha hey it happens, there's a lot of content in there so I get it
Can't wait for more, it's really entertaining hearing your reactions to Berserk 👌🏽
Thank you!!
It's gonna be deep!
I'm so glad you're reading again, it can be tough after the soulless reading that's impressed on us. I hope you find some hardbacks 🤘
Pat noooooo don't fall for it!
Hey man, love your review. Berserk is my favourite manga of all time since I first discover it. Can't wait to know more about your opinion on the golden age arc. Keep up the good work, you earn my subscribe.
I appreciate that! Our next video will be out next week for deluxe edition 3!
Can't wait for the next review!!!!
We can't either!!
This is a good way to look at it, hell I even loved the black swordsman arc 🤷♂️
I am really enjoying your work! Always nice to some fresh opinions about berserk. I've been reading it for so long
Thank you 😊
It was a pleasure to hear you both talk about volume 2. I will try to answer some doubts you have posed, I could be wrong and maybe I should reread the series from the beginning (I certainly will). I will not spoil anything about future volumes, I promise. :)
Regarding the moon theory, it is interesting, I had never thought about this before so I'm not sure.
Thank you so much for the information! This helps us a lot 🙌
That's a really good way of looking at it, that's so spot on
That middle paragraph about Griffith is great, man 👌
@@carlandersson7870 yeah that paragraph is chefs kiss
I mean it's fairly common to experience nausea and other symptoms during periods. it's something she doesn't know very well and there's not much help for her considering the times. I personally think that adds to her idk cool factor? being able to fight while being hindered by your own body.
36:13 so what happened in that scene where Guts was being a bit sexist is more nuanced than that
so they have been fighting together for a bit now and Guts knows she's a strong fighter a lot better than the other men in the band of the hawk
in that scene, Guts knows Casca pretty well and guts can see she's slowing down and having a harder time keeping up this is a life or death situation so he purposefully gets under her skin to motivate/piss her off to try to get her to keep going.
39:40 Idk if it was already answered but yes. she layed naked with him to warm Guts. he lost a lot of blood and was cold because of that.
BUT it was Griffiths order and she didn't like it. thats (i think ) was why she punched him
Yep! Good catch!
Sorry to leave a other comment, but about the period thing: yes, that is exactly why she couldn't fight properly. After Guts undresses her to keep her warm he notices blood between her leg and he's first like "oh no, she is wounded" and then realizes that she is not "wounded"

the part where they took all their clothes off was because all their clothes were drenched guts thought she was sick she couldn't move and he couldn't make a fire or that would have alerted the enemy that was looking for them. 35:09
Yep that makes total sense. I appreciate the info!
He's so charismatic and enigmatic!
@@thefantasynuttwork yeah. I've read and re-read this story multiple times and he's still the most mysterious character in the series.
Great video love that your reading manga berserk is one of my favs
It's becoming one of mine as well!
This is playlist that I made for the Golden Age Arc with iconic Berserk songs that you can use to enhance the experience while reading the manga in certain moments if you wish to do so. Four songs, they’re pretty straight forward.

Behelit - creepy and dark moments
Guts’ theme - emotional, deep, philosophical moments (dreams, bonfire)
Forces - war/battle
Take the Wheel - war/battle
Thank you!!!
We definitely will give our opinions on the various cast members. We appreciate you watching 🙂

I definitely will check those out, thank you!
not sure if you know but when you get to about the middle of volume 13 of the non deluxe versions (so deluxe 5), but there is a lost chapter that didn't make it to publication in volume editions from the original magazine release. there is a lot of debate as to whether the chapter is canon, my personal recommendation is that you read the chapter and then decide on the canonicity. personally I think it's still one of the best chapters of berserk.
please talk about it when you get to it. chapter 83 or the lost chapter and is pretty easy to find online in English.
also if you get into anime and its associated mediums further , I recommend getting into the Nasuverse
Thank you! I'll try to remember that when we get there 🙂
Vinland omnibus 3 and 4 will close out the first story arc so I'd recommend doing both.
Also I may have missed it, but if you didn't mention it, the scene where Guts listens to Griffith tell Charlotte about his idea of friendship is a really good look into Griffiths head and Guts' uncertainty about his life.
It's such a great moment, I forgot to mention it 😩

Absolutely!
To clear things up without spoiling, there are multiple behelits, a behelit is what turns a human into a demon as long as there is a sacrifice as we saw with the count and his wife in the black swordsman arc

I loved watching you guys discuss and get into the conclusions complementing each other.
You're never a bother and I appreciate the comments! I'm definitely gonna check out the anime once we finish the manga!

Oh you sweet summer child
😂
You are not forgetting the kickstand, the King is never given a name.
Okay good!
The moon? I didn't notice this but holy shit foreshadowing.
Wild right??
Berserk changed me as a man. I feel like I found a part of myself that was always there and always felt like was trying to come out. Berserk forced that part of me all the way out and I'm a more complete person because of Miuras life's work
That is awesome to hear
2:00 just a "has passed?" She was hanged... Talk about ominous.. Good video though!
Thanks!
When you catch up give the Manga called Kingdom a try. Maybe try Vinland Saga as well.
As far as the Golden Age swords go, Guts has a few of them. Their origins are not really discussed as it’s probably as mundane as Guts commissioning a sword to his own specifications from the local armorer. Will that change with future gear? We shall see…..
Thank you!
So the thing about periods is that they affect every woman differently. They can range from feeling like a light slap on the face to feeling like you are being repeatedly punched in the groin. Now imagine having to deal with a bad period and the exertions of war.
Yeah for sure
The king is never given a name. He's just "The King of Midland"
Thanks!
Yes Casca was on her period. She was having cramps and it impacted her fighting.
Poor Casca 😩
dont forget watch the movie golden age 1-3 its good too
Ok thanks!
Yeah, now looking back it was pretty obvious. I was definitely confused at first, my male ignorance showing 😅
@@notthesimi that's very true
for me Griffiths words with "you will be mine" etc are not ment romanticially or sexuall but kinda Slave like. He "owns" Guts and decides what to do with him

I would also highly suggest the guts theme from the 90s anime. It perfectly capture the calm and peacefulness of berserk soft moments. Also it was a big meme:

And the really dark one which really tells guts dark upbringing as a child soldier that only knew how to fight in thr front line in war

Love to see it, thank you
You're spot on about the romance between Griffith and Guts.
That makes sense to me
Yall gonna go crazy when you see the lost children arc
Oh my hahah
Waiting for volume 3
Coming soonish!
How long until the review of the next volume??
This week! Probably Thursday I'd say
@@thefantasynuttwork noice!
Yes, Casca was on her period. Also yes, Griffith orders Casca to warm Guts while he fevered after they fought
Yep! Very interesting, our next episode will be out today 😁
31:00 you are talking about Judeau, right? That's a dude 😂
Oh really? Good lord I suck at telling them a part 🤣
@@thefantasynuttwork I also thought that he's a girl. I was shocked when I realized I was wrong 🤣
@@RockHeiland I'm glad I'm not the only one hahah
YESSSSSS!!!!!
😎
29:43-29:47
Just you wait
👀
casca was on her period yes... a pretty bad one at that.
Very true!
14:00 🤣🤣🤣 hmm I wonder if the moon will have a part of the show 🤣
36:13 yes she was on her period
39:47 griffith told her to, which made her digusted by his decision
41:56 to also clarify that guts even when he was a child would always have a sword which almost as big as he is. Making it kind of sense he would then get the large slabbed metal sword. Also practicing swing his sword with one hand which obviously makes sense why he's able to carry that big ass sword with one hand
And also notice when guts is after a rough situation he always swings his sword in frustration. From the top of my head, the situation where casca blames him for putting griffith in danger against zodd. And after he get "assaulted" by Donovan and is told he was sold by his father. Both of these scene I think have guts swing his sword in heavy thinking.
Haha, appreciate the confirmation!
I had to stop a little bit after this arc. It got a bit too rapey for me. I was like "Bruh, I get it, this world isn't safe for people." LOL
It's very brutal
@@thefantasynuttwork I remember where I left off. It was the Milleon Falcon Arc. I was about halfway through that. Guts got his Berserker armor.
Golden Age Arc is brilliant storytelling. But the latter arcs felt shoehorned with hentai shit like the demon horse in the Conviction Arc lol.
I read Berserk to the Knight Artorias theme music from dark souls, and later on in the series to the guts theme. Both helped make it even more epic! Artorias was even based on guts!
That's so cool!
Btw, you do NOT want to know how it gets back to black swordsman arc. You think you do, but you don't.
😅😅😅
I can't wait for that video to see his eyes and hear the trauma in his voice
