- Filmed in late March 1969 for a documentary that was never completed, this footage ended up in a 1970 Swedish TV special. Judy and new husband Mickey Deans are filmed being tourists in Malmo, enjoying a buffet, and lounging in their hotel reading the newspaper and playing the piano.The footage is primarily silent so I added a soundtrack utilizing The Faraway Part Of Town from Pepe and That's All There Is, There Isn't Any More from The Letter.

Great clip. Note: When I was a young pianist in New York City, performing at the Top of the Town in the Shelton Towers hotel, Judy Garland came in and sang with me for a couple of hours. I will never forget that night.

Never heard this first song before. Her voice was unforgettable. My mom took me to a matinee at the Curran in SF when I was ten or 11. I'll never forget seeing and hearing her in person. What an amazing trooper she was. She was the Leonardo DeVinci of song, in my opinion and should have been cherished through her career. There will never be another Judy Garland.

no she did not . A true Hollywood tragedy, The used her up and abused her since she was a child, then threw her away.

Indescribably wonderful and deeply moving - a true real genius!!!
At this stage of her life her body was well and truly dying; I don’t think she would have survived much longer whether or not an accidental overdose had occurred. Some kind of alarming emaciation was obviously going on-whether anorexic in nature or simply because she could no longer digest and metabolize food (which has been implied). It’s mostly sad to see the footage, here, but there are moments, like when she pets the little dog, that elicit a smile; her tender heart and spirit were still fully functional.
As for Deans, who can ever really know what occasioned that pairing? If it hadn’t been him, it would have been someone else, though one shudders to imagine who it might’ve been. It’s clear that he could not care for her financially, not in terms of obtaining the emergency medical care she needed. At all events, she seemed irreversibly damaged by this juncture. Surely, death was a relief for her. All she ever did was accomplish marvelous things, from early childhood onward, at times to the great detriment of her health. How terminally exhausted she must have been. The scoring of the footage is great-especially JG’s knockout rendition of ‘The Faraway Part of Town’ … one of her best studio track interpretations ever, imo. Haunting, to say the least.
You write beautifully but I’m not sure I agree ‘death was a relief’ for her. She seems to be happy here and no doubt she enjoyed singing and expressing herself through her art - so she had lots to live. I’m sure if she could of avoided that overdose she would have chosen to. I wish Judy’s body hadn’t been so damaged and she could have recovered physically, managed to stay focused enough to work and clear her debts, enjoyed her children’s successes and enjoyed her grandchildren.

God knows Judy's alcohol/drug addiction has been discussed to ad nauseam, but her startling skeletal appearance is seldom addressed. Judy had several bouts of hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, and kidney ailments, any of which should have killed her, and that is not even factoring in a 2 pack a day nicotine addiction, but the autopsy concluded that along with the (accidental) lethal overdoses of barbiturates, bulimia nervosa did indeed contribute to her death. Dying at just over 90 lbs., her body was literally consuming itself to survive.
I wish the Betty Ford Center was around the time Judy was still alive. She would probably have lived longer than 47 years
Thanks for sharing the footage. I've never heard "The Far Away Part of Town" before. (I think Pepe is the only Garland film I've never seen.) Wow! What a powerful performance, just incredible!
Judy isn't seen in Pepe. You only hear her sing this song as an accompaniment to a dance number, so you've basically experienced her performance in that film.

Her legacy lives on & her 100th birhday on the 10th of June 2022 is being celebrated worldwide in many ways. Gone but never forgotten!

All the years of pills, booze, and stress had really taken a toll on Judy. She looks much older and fragile for someone only 47.
I think the fact she is in shadow for much of this video and the choice of song gives this experience an undeniable haunting effect. I think people who like melancholy tend to be drawn to videos like this. I'm one of them!!

Roslyn Wilder, assistant for Talk of the Town said Mickey Deans was the most unsuitable man Judy could’ve gotten to take care of her. Nevertheless, I hope she felt safe and protected, which is what she craved. Deans didn’t seem to be the simpering doormat type of man she usually ended up with, so I think there’s a pretty good chance she did feel safe with him.
Yes. When she was very ill with the flu, she did appear very late because she was trying to prove to the world that she was reliable and dependable. However, when she came on and started to sing, some of the rude audience (the mgt did not explain to the audience her condition,) booed, throwing garbage at her. She was absolutely terrified. She looked over at the wings (where Mickey was always there cheering and supporting her) and she saw he had disappeared and completely abandoned her! This is truly so very heartbreaking. 😳🤔😥😢
It comes down to Judy’s ability to judge character and make the responsible decisions to support herself personally and professionally. And the enabled addictions only added to the downward spiral of this enormously gifted performer who died far, far too young.
@@charliechilders6630 Ugh. I wonder why he went and hid. I believe her primary attachment to him, unlike the others, was his ability to supply the pills. He said in an interview that one thing he and Judy had in common was they both liked “to party”, so maybe one could infer that he didn’t try to control her intake of pills and alcohol, unless she was due to perform. On a T of T tape, she complained on stage that what was supposed to be vodka in her glass was water, which had to be Deans. Something I’ve wondered about is how much longer she would’ve lived until the extensive liver damage took her. I believe it was Lorna who said Judy was in the process of dying when she was with Deans.
@@stephenacs Nobody could’ve stopped the pills and alcohol, nobody. Considering she never attached herself to men who both wanted her and could support her financially, her best match was John Meyer. I believe he truly loved her and wouldn’t have stolen from her. He’d set up for her career to take off again and had an accountant arrange for her to be able to keep 10% of her earnings. The thing is, though, nobody could keep up with her, nor take her erratic and oftentimes dangerous (to them), behavior. Meyer said she started out wanting him to stay up with her for 24 hours, then it became 48, then it became 72 - he called it as her “moving the goalposts” for the person to prove they loved her. She was just too damn damaged by her mother and what I believe was SA suffered at the hands of men associated with MGM.
Several reports have suggested spencer Tracy began sleeping with judy when she was 14. The studio appeaetenly knew about it and did nothing. We may never know the extent of what happened but I fear even more traumatic things may have happened. Her father was dead and her mother did not protect her. A times I think I can see something in Judy's face that something is wrong ex "it's love im after". Maybe I'm reading too much into this.

Every man in her life used her. She was too wrecked emotionally and physically to go on much longer. It was inevitable.
Shame she never got the help she needed
I'm happy to see that she was smiling a lot. But it's sad to see her surrounded by the losers/users who squeezed the last bits of magic from her tiny body. Thanks, Buzz, for sharing with us yet another amazing piece of the past.

David Rose and Vincente Minnelli actually had successful careers of their own separate from hers. Unfortunately, neither considered her as important as those careers, and both, as Vincente admitted about himself, "failed her miserably". The other three husbands, as well as countless leeches lived off her without shame or decency. How anyone could and did take advantage of such a magical creature as Judy is beyond me.
So many people benefitted off making her dependent. If her mother cared even a little she should have taught her as a child the importance of depending on oneself and being financially literate/responsible.
She worked too hard to have died penniless.
So many selfish people had her blood on their hands.
Rough final year for Judy. Really curious how that cut song in the rerelease of Wizard of Oz will go.

Her white go-to boots are literally too big to cling to what was left of her calves. She looked so terrible. I had the abridged version of the documentary using this footage. You could tell she was more than sick. This point in her life to me seems sketchy in 68-69. Meyer wrote a book. Deans wrote a book but I think she was interacting with some really shady characters during these years and her health began to decline so quickly. Personally I think she committed suicide. She was at one point the biggest star in THE WORLD. But those last two years she had become homeless and destitute and owing millions to the IRS and other creditors. The drugs she was taking to give her the energy to be Judy Garland were making her sick and she already had a compromised liver so was probably nauseous most of the time. This new husband/manager was not working out. To marry a man that she first met when he came to her apartment with amphetamines showed where her head was at. Her younger children were happy to be having a more structured life with their father (according to Lorna's book). But the biggest factor was her feelings of victimization and self-pity and that she could no longer be the performer she was and expected to be. Who knows how long she was clinically/chronically depressed and using amphetamines particularly Ritalin to cope. Finally, she had been taking Seconal for decades. She, of all people knew how much it would take. So she woke up at dawn and thought - no more. Obviously she thrived when she was working and bringing people to their feet night after night. But imagine how she felt when Scandanavia was done and there was nothing on the horizon and that she didn't have to inner fortitude for yet another comeback and she knew of Dean's very limited potential. So many factors. Sick and tired of being sick and tired.
I think her voice going must have been a game changer for her at this stage and very frightening
she just wasn't singing well
she was the greatest singer of the 20th Century and she always had the voice to fall back on - people loved it and would pay any price
so in a jam she just had to turn up and sing and it would all start again
without the voice it must have been very hard for her to see how she was going to solve the mountain of problems she had by 1969 her singing was her safety net as well as her main artistic outlet
she much have been thinking "now what?" which must have been absolutely terrifying on a really deep level

Kay Thompson said it best, "She did what she wanted to do". SHE LIVED!!!! When things were good. SHE LIVED!!!!! When things were bad. SHE LIVED!!!! Judy Garland was part of the "Greatest Generation" that was produced in this country that believed when thing got tough, you got back up and "LIVED". She was a victim of her time period like others with substance abuse, but home girl didnt lay down in it.....SHE LIVED!!!!!
