    Using the ropeman or rollnlock on a rope, when doing a fail test, pulls the outer sheath off the rope first, then must back up to the knot to break the inner core of the rope at very high pressure over 5000 #. In other words the rope doesn't snap leaving you to fall, the sheath is damaged, for you to see , and replace before total failure. Solution is when up in tree, to shorten your rope by tying a temporary knot closer to device. Use one or the other , not both .

    You rock! Thanks for putting that together so fast.

    If you single stick on a tether and a ropeman you put alot of slack in it everytime you move. This is a really good backup set up for that system.

    In the construction world, OSHA says 5000lb tie off anchor for that shock load that can occur. Just wanted to mention that. To note if you do Shock load your ropes replace them.

    thanks for this. This is exactly what I have always done. I don't like the release on the ropeman but for short adjustments that are common when at hunting height I like the ropeman and on my linesman's belt it is convenient for sure, but backing up is not only a good idea but very necessary in my opinion. I go as far as to back up just about all mechanical devices I use (ascenders and descenders)

    seems this makes the ropeman a pretty expensive prusik tender then

    Great video Brother!!!! Kinda forgot about when i fall my body weight increases massive on the rope when it shock loads it! Thats what i do with my prussic its there why not have thst extra layer of security!!!!

    I have Resc Tech tether (8mm). The thinner tether is great in terms of packing in in a pouch however, the prusik knots tend to bind more than on the larger diameter rope. The Ropeman is a bit of an adjustment as it will let loose if you are not careful, for me the jury is still out on weather to use the Ropeman or not. My confidence is higher with the prusik knot. Thanks for the video. : )

    I believe any falls require the products to be replaced, ropes or harnesses.

    I really like my new Sterling Oplux which is a 8mm / 8 1/2 foot which hooks 2 my tether. It has the looped end which is a 6 1/2" sewn eye & i have the doubke eye protective prusik in camo like u had on yours. I took my tag end & looped it all since I like the length I have on my bridge. If I had a rope man on the 11.4mm Samson Predator it would be a real pain to damage it & replace it. It is sewn onto the saddle on the loop side & I would have 2 send the whole saddle & setup to New Tribe to fix cuz u need a factory splice on that Predator which is beyond difficult to do unless u work @ Iron Street.

    I prefer the eye to eye prussic in a distel hitch with tender myself. Adjusts in both directions easily with one hand and is about half the cost of a ropeman.

    Could be wrong but the 1k to 2k pounds you mentioned for rope failure due to the ropeman I believe has to do with the ropeman 2 not the ropeman 1. Lesst thats the video i saw

    if youre applying the logic that the ropeman will cut the rope it seems to me that the prusik would have literal inches to stop you from falling. at this point i think you have to choose between the two in my opinion. i think ill stick with two lines. A ropeman for a linemans belt and a prusik for a the actual lifeline. Maybe im wrong tho. i dunno

    Those double eye factory prusiks r offered in camo & WesSpur sells them 4 a good price. It would be nice if people ordered extras of them during this period of time. U never know when u might need 2 replace 1 on your tether & your saddle bring. Redundancy can't be emphasized enough when it comes 2 saddle use.

    I dont believe a prussik would catch the rope either to avoid the stated problem or a cut rope unless it was a long length then tended by hand ( to much work and still leaves the time between the tend problematic)
    Personally i dont believe if used correctly in rope access enough force could be generated to cut/damage the rope. It should only be subject to very short falls on a static rope
    That said if falling is a concern fall arrest equipment/system should be in place.
    My opinion would be stick with a prussik for a less than 5 min up and down anything else would be a waste of money

    Great information, BUT why not just use the prusik (one handed with a tender ring) and a stopper knot on the end of your tether? Hunt safely, my friends!

  • @Sully330
    @Sully330 8 місяців тому

    The core of the rope provides 75-80 percent of the strength of the rope. The mantle or outer sheath provides the rest..25 percent .
    It doesn’t matter if you have a prussik or ascender , if you don’t practice and aren’t competent , you can get injured. PRACTICE

    My personal opinion is we as a community should be moving away from a short tether as a whole and just bring the rappel line and use it as a tether. With that use an assisted breaking device (gri-gri, safeguard, etc.) with a blocking knot below it while climbing in single stick or if ascending on a pre rigged rope periodically tie a quick overhand on a bite to prevent you from falling all the way to the ground. As a climbing/ mountain guide if you are going to be redundant with this system consider adding a separate carabiner for each system to make it easier to escape one or the other if necessary.

  • @lymanclark5537
    @lymanclark5537 2 роки тому

    That system requires both hands to move it out, so no advantage gained over using just a prusik knot in that direction. I also worry more about the rope breaking or getting damaged at the loop on the tree, than at the prusik. The knot or loop at the tree is suppose to be the weak link. I use a ropeman on my linemans rope but not on the tether. I really dont move the prusik that much when on the tether. If I should fall and shock load the tether I would replace it either way.

    I don’t use the ropeman on my tether however I have been tying an alpine butterfly about a foot below my Prusik (distel hitch) and then clipping the loop from the alpine butterfly back into my tether carabiner on my bridge. My thinking is this allows a little bit of adjustment on my tether and is a backup incase my Prusik slips or breaks. Thoughts on doing this? If i climb DrT I can also do the same I suppose. I think its worth while to back things up where ever possible and to have a plan on how to get out of a jam if things go bad.

    • @NYSaddleHunter
      @NYSaddleHunter  4 роки тому +2

      I'm a big fan of backing things up a d theres lots of ways to back things up either with midline knots as you climb or some guys run a munsters hitch . I think it's a good idea. Might slow you down but safer is usually slower and safer is always good

      You can use a Ropeman as an ascender but not as a belay Device. You can climb but you can't decend like you can with somthing like a gri-gri

    Not disagreeing with anything you said;
    Seems like the ropeman is not failing, but the rope is, but that's another discussion. The report shows the tool did not slip, but damaged the rope, and cut the rope on the third test (new rope each test? report did not say). Report states a dynamic rope should be used to absorb load, the tests were run with static rope. Find report here www.hse.gov.uk/research/crr_pdf/2001/crr01364.pdf
    A good test would be to have ropeman cut the rope and see if prussic would catch the load. I would guess prior to the ropeman cutting the line the bulk of the weight would of been absorbed and may cause the load to enter a weightless factor where the prussic never grabs; not much more then a inch or 2 between the possible cut in the rope and the prussic?
    Bottom line, don't just check you have all your gear each time you go up, check its condition as well. Climb safe :)

    Thank you! Terrific safety video. I am going to give this a try in the offseason. My only constructive criticism: your short string lanyard on the Ropeman 1 is quite lame. Take some of that extra paracord you must have lying around and dress up your Ropeman pull cord ;) Might I suggest: ua-cam.com/video/SNfNuaKIekw/v-deo.html

      That’s definitely it’s job. You don’t want it to ever come to that . We always stress some form of redundancy especially if your going to rely on a micro ascender
