This is a story of awful suffering that Johnny brought to life as Eugene Smith. He read the book and researched the heartbreaking story of Minamata as only Johnny can do. We need to understand the suffering of all beings on this planet, so that it pierces our conscience and makes us think outside of ourselves. Thank you Johnny for realising how important the human suffering was in Minamata, and is still going on! I will manage to get it in South Africa sometime!! Love you Johnny!

Despite using the proper name of Minamata City as the title and the real, juristic name of Chisso Corporation and its real logo, the film unlawfully uses a series of invented scenes such as an envelope of money, arson, Chisso's Hospital, injuries, and other falsehoods, falsifying history. The film violates private rights of the deceased daughter and her surviving mother in a bathtub, too. The parents did not want her to appear in the movie.
