After owning the Duke390 for 2 years I finally trade in for the Kawa Z400...No regrets..Yes the Duke is torquey from low rpm which is good for city riding..But again lose juice around 90mph and with the counterbalance shaft againts vibration its quite struggling at 95mph on long freeways...I used to ride bigger bikes but again the Kawa is something i feel more confident for long rides with my wife..Can’t deny the looks goes to KTM but again reliability and cheap parts is my preferences

The Duke being a single cylinder is going to need a new top end every so often, its just the nature of the beast. The bike it self is cheap but KTM parts are very expensive compared to Kawasaki parts. Something to be aware of before buying one. EDIT: THIS IS FOR U.S. BUYERS. The ways tariffs are Japanese bikes are ALWAYS CHEAPER then the European bikes in the states.

@@PartnerthedogI wish everyone would get experience in the dirt before their road going days. Less people would be crashing.
As your skill increases you will be starting to want a bit more. It's inevitable. A six hundred would be a better choice. You're going there eventually. If you have the knowledge of what to do, how to control a bike so that you do not drop it while maneuvering at very slow speed, it's the same if you gained ten pounds, or one thousand pounds. You get used to the weight and handle it accordingly. There are little adjustments to make because of the mass, but it's easy A half a ton of Honda Gold Wing is light as soon as you are underway. It is still mammoth, but mammoth is fun too.
Maybe your next bike is going to be a liter bike. Just get the training and you'll be just fine. But you won't be soon wishing for more.

I just bought a 2019 KTM Duke 390 as my first bike Wednesday... I have done every bit of research I could on all the suggested beginners bikes but it’s funny that the KTM was the bike I saw that got me itching for a motorcycle. I kept going back and forth on buying a used vs new, private or dealer, and ultimately decided on opting for the KTM when I got a hell of a deal. I got a 2019 KTM 390 Duke Brand new, zero miles for WTD price of $4500. It was a no brainer.
I love the bike. I already added a wind screen as she’s going to be my commuter on most days. Gonna throw on a slip on later down the road but the biggest issue I am having is the seat height. I’m 5”6/5”7 chick and I am fine with everything BUT mounting. The Duke wants to sit up right and she likes to sit high. Problem is that when I mount her and go to place my right leg over she wants to buck you off and tip onto the right side. I’m buying a adjustable side stand which hopefully will resolve the issue and make it easier for me to get on with a better lean angle. If need be I will have her lowered as well.
Point being... if you’re interested in the Duke and 5”8 and under, be prepared to do some mods to ride comfortably, especially if this is your first bike. I am have a lot of fun and regret nothing but I know I could’ve had them lower it and throw it into my purchase price. Oh well. Lesson learned.
For the money, KTM knocked it out of the park. ABS, traction control, Slipper Clutch, Upside down Fork, LEDs, the display and of course the tech on this bike is sick. I love that it has Bluetooth and I can upload my directions/maps on to it, listen to music as well as answer calls, all at the tips of my fingers. The ability to turn abs off, or go supermoto, and the track feature is cool. It’s a great bike, highly recommend.
I did test drive a Duke before buying but apparently they changed the seat height and I thought it was still 30”... well it’s really 32” on my years.
    Great review guys.

Well I'm surprised to see the pricing of these 2 bikes in the USA.
Here in India, it's totally different. You get the kTm at the half of the price of the Kawasaki.
The 390 Duke we have at around like $3700 and the Ninja 400 at around $7500. The Z400 isn't yet released here. Though there is a HUGE price margin gap between these two here.

Not sure. Would have to evaluate all the nuance differences between the Duke and RC. The RC is still behind the times cohesively. It's got a lot of ignored bits and pieces that need updated. I'd buy a Duke over the RC as things sit right now, easily. But, that sensibility factor in the back of my mind knowing that a Kawasaki motorcycle just isn't going to give any trouble and can be trusted for well past 100k miles with proper maintenance? Hard to get away from that, in spite the character differences. Just hope Japan gets off its proverbial butt and starts making interesting reliable machines akin to the good stuff Europe has been churning out in the last decade, especially in the sub 1000cc sport market.
I've got a unmodified '18 MT-09 right now, and that 790 Duke is really calling to me. I'm hoping to get a test drive this year.

One of the better reviews online.
I like the way you guys leave subjective opinions out of the mix and don't just talk about yourselves...
    Refreshing.
I'm an experienced rider and I USED to own a couple Yamaha 1981 RD350LCs.
The power to weight ratio (read FUN Ratio) is right close to these subjects.
I sold the Yamaha(s) because by the time you get into the power band, the law enforcement overkill will ensure you lose your license and there's just NO way to ride an LC legally....
I always liked the ER6N, which was the closest thing to the LC in pure "feel" a little bit buzzy and a little bit twitchy and just about the same performance.
But I have always had a soft spot for the Duke 390 and this review points out the Duke's advantages.
looking at the aftermarket power commanders and so forth on the Duke forums it would seem that after overcoming the emissions tuning of the bike, there will be an acceptable level of fun and performance in the Duke.
    I think I'll be purchasing a 390 real soon.
I didn't hear anything convincing about the ABS and the quick shifter, although I don't believe that is stock in the US. Also, I don't recall you guys mentioning the slipper clutch.

I bought my white 390 Duke new in 2020. I did the de-cat, derestricted air box cover and a Coober piggyback ECU on a stock muffler. Engine cage, bark busters, and sliders. These mods turned it into a different bike. It now redlines just under 10k. I giggle every time I get on it but with that said, it's so light that passing 18 wheelers on the highway at 75-85mph can be like going into a wind-tunnel sideways. Also, I do regular maintenance on it and have had -0- issues in 6000 miles. KTM >> READY TO RACE

@@vinerod12 In terms of quality, I think the Kawasaki is better. If you're buying new and don't mind the possibility of giving the Duke in for repairs under warranty, just go with what feels right - test ride them at a dealership to see what fits you. The Duke is a very fun bike, but too small and light for me, feels a bit like a rocket bicycle. The Kawasaki feels more refined, controlled and substantial.

Oh, I sat on the Duke and couldn’t get off of it fast enough. It was incredibly uncomfortable. The two bikes that I was having a tough time deciding between were the Yamaha RT 03 and the Kawasaki Z 400 and after driving both of them back to back, the Kawasaki for me was the clear winner, and I bought one this morning. I am 6 feet tall 185 pounds and was much more comfortable on the Kawasaki. Also, the Kawasaki had a much more forgiving and gentle clutch. Hope this helps someone deciding which bike to buy.
