One of Britain's secret rock bands. Far too ingenious for modern, bland sensibilities, they're completely underestimated now. The first four albums are full of wit, invention, satire, and tributes to previous musical styles, with crisp pop songs side by side with extended rock, in a totally unconventional and unique style. They have a complete genre all to themselves...............
I remember being a 10 year old kid and hearing this song when it was released. So incredible and unique.
The 1970s AM and FM radio airwaves were full of amazing music!
Me too. Same age
I absolutely adore this song. Nothing like belting it out at the top of your lungs when you don’t want to be in love but you know, deep down, that it’s far too late.
"The Things We Do For Love" is a pretty good 10cc song as well.
agreed
Yessss : )
Absolutely. COMPLETELY different feel on that song!
No doubt my introduction to 10cc. I was ten, just starting to really get into FM radio, buying 45s and vinyl records ... Led Zeppelin, Elton John, etc.
I like that album a lot but ironically that's the one song I didn't care for but it was a big hit for them so a lot of people like it and that's fine. I get a kick out of the song Good Morning Judge.
Two of the band members left 10cc to form ‘Godley and Creme’ and produced the wonderful haunting song “Cry”.
And the marvellous album 'L'.
They also went into producing videos, and Lol also joined the Art of Noise.
I was going to say the same thing.
Alai the weird and wonderful Consequences album, showing off their Gizmotron device for guitar
Cry was also a groundbreaking clip
An Englishman In New York was good.
There's a great "making of" video that's about 15 min. They explain what you read about the voices and have them isolated from the recording. Really gives you chills.
There's actually a couple of videos on the making of this song, very similar, remember liking the longer one better. Ground breaking song.
Their making I'm not in love in some ways was more labor intensive than Bohemian Rhapsody.
Here's a link about 15mins long on how.... enjoy, ua-cam.com/video/3oxe4mlsQos/v-deo.html&ab_channel=spek6
Seconding to suggest the video on the creative process they used.

I'm dating myself here, but I always liked this song upon first hearing it in the summer of 75 at 17 years of age. My favorite line has always been, ♫"I keep your picture upon the wall...it hides a messy stain that's lying there"♫. Upon first hearing it, brought a smile to my face and always will, it conjures up in ones mind the image of a frustrated guy being in love and not wanting to be, in a moment of totally losing it, throwing a plate of spaghetti against the wall and being too lazy afterwards to clean up the mess.
Anything but spaghetti….Anything else. 😉
1975! Just a kid and this song worked its magic on me. It was sad and yet mesmerizing. At the end I used to think of drifting off to outer space. A fascinating classic.
Me, too! 100%! It has stuck with me ever since. I still get chills. 🥰
“Sad and mesmerizing” is right
Same with me
The beauty of it all is that I'm still given that in a trance feeling!
@@cherylreichardt me too. It really is amazing. I can remember listening to the 45 on my “Not” my gfs Close and Play phonograph and feeling all kinds of awkward. It’s a magical song.
Daniel, you have to play this at night, in your bedroom, with minimal light in the room. The members of this band were prolific song writers before 10cc ever came in to being. Graham Gouldman's first hit was a song written that was rejected but then picked up by The Yardbirds which became a hit called "For Your Love". The Yardbirds included Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Gouldman was 16 years of age at the time. Kevin Godley and Laurence Creme went on to become a song writing duo as well as music video producers, producing the following music videos (among others):
Asia "The Heat of the Moment"
Eric Clapton "Forever Man"
Huey Lewis & The News "Hip to be Square"
Yes "Leave It"
George Harrison "When we was Fab"
Thanks for the history 🎶✨
Heh you nailed the atmosphere for listening to this tune.
Godley and Creme also were the creative masterminds behind the videoclip of Peter Gabriels Sledgehammer. They worked on some kind of mechanical guitar effect the gizmotron. I loved the (weird) album Consequences by Godley and Creme, I can recommend the song 5 o' clock in the morning.
Bus Stop by The Hollies was also written by Graham .
Its a magical song. I remember when it came out - all of the parts manage to come together in a thoughtful, heartfelt manner. Utterly timeless and will be played 150 years from now.
And to think we heard this on the radio, daily! Damn I’m getting old!
Just imagine Daniel, as teens we woke up to this kind of greatness every day on the radio. This sounded like angels. Imagine it Daniel; in UK we only had 3 tv channels!
p.s. yes he is in love; methinks he doth protest too much.
This track held the Guinness “Book of Records “ for the greatest amount of overdubs ever, yes I had all their albums, sad old bugger , right!.
Watch the "making of" video. The sang every note in the scale and held it as long as they could. Each one was looped on long long long tape on its on track. They played it all simultaneously and adjusted the volume on the mixer (played it like an instrument.) to the final mix. Insane. The "Big Boys Don't Cry" whisper was the receptionist in the studio.
A custom, single-voice Mellotron, in a way...
10cc and ELO were the best of the British pop scene of the time.
I'm not crying. You're crying.
Billy Joel loved that tape loop effect so much, he used it on “Just The Way You Are.”
What a great song full of atmosphere. Another artist with aerial aesthetics would be Al Stewart listen to The Year of the Cat, or Time Passages both with amazing atmospherics
Totally agree. One of my favorites easy listening. Love The sweet too. Totally different Genre of music tho.
The word your searching for....ethereal.
Oh the memories😏
Me too!
Thanks Daniel. I remember the female voice, she was a 19 year girl a receptionist at the studio it was her first day .
That’s great info. Wow where is she now.
Kathy
This was a big hit around the time I graduated from high school, May of 1975.
So, for me, it's the last high school song.
Class of 75 - we had the music!
Great memory to share. Kinda sad our youth is quickly fading away. Thank God for music ahy?
You're listening to a masterpiece of song writing and production.
You can do this type of vocal by singing the notes of a chord on separate tracks and using the faders or draw a volume envelope across each take. Use reverb and a chorus or phaser/flanging effect. Of course you could build it up more layers and do it for every chord change in your song. Copy and paste stacks of vocals unaligned in time to give a smeary sound, much like a Mellotron. These old love songs really bring back memories. The summer of 74 ( maybe) this song was everywhere and it’s etched into my mind forever.
Hi Hartlor. I’ve seen you on Live Chat during Daniel’s Live Streams. Are you getting Daniel a Birthday gift and sending it to his P.O. Box? Daniel’s Birthday is in Sept, that’s 3 months away. Just wondering.
Have a good day. 😃
I’m so pleased you like the humour in their lyrics - I thought you’d enjoy them :) 10cc were all northern English men born in the 40s. They’re a stoic lot up there :) To me the denial of love, the “big boys don’t cry”, the deeply emotional music, is the voice of a man who can’t openly declare his true vulnerable, tender feelings because of cultural inhibitions. Eric Stewart said the lyrics were inspired by his wife commenting that he didn’t say “I love you” as much any more. He replied that saying it all the time would diminish the meaning, and that just because he didn’t say it often, didn’t mean he didn’t feel it. I recommend watching the short “making of” video available on UA-cam.
One of the gems of the fabulous 70's.
The two things that made this a great reaction video are, firstly, you listened to the full version of this classic song. Several reactors before you have done the radio edit which sadly cuts out the musical end outro.
Secondly you analysed the song so that you discovered what they had to do back in the mid 70s in order to create that vocal sound. Quite something the lengths they had to go to, in contrast to today when it would be a very simple click on a computer.
Tip of the hat to whoever suggested this song, and thank you Daniel for sharing with us! 👍 Your UK fan & friend, Ian
Hey Daniel, they overdubbed the daylights out of those backing vocals. I remember when this song came out, always loved the the mysterious and melancholy mood.
I have a ton of favorite 70s songs from multiple genres and groups, and edging very close to the top of the list is this one. No matter how many times I hear it I am still amazed at the feelings it evokes. What's more, I don't believe there's ever been a cover done of it.
Hey bright eyes, 😃 I can’t stop listening to this song. Memories of my childhood in the 70’s.
70s Quality. Check Out " I'm Mandy Fly Me " Daniel.
This song was recorded at the end of the quadraphonic craze that used a 4-pt (top right ear/bottom right ear/top left ear/bottom left ear with an occasional shot that blazed across your mind--this feature is exemplified by Olivia Newton-John's cover of the Air that I Breath on her Have You Never Been Mellow) stereo.
When this first came out and I would hear it on the radio. I thought so hauntly, beautiful. It was a new sound I had never heard before.
One of the greatest tracks to come out of the 70s. It's wonderful to see you react to this amazing number.
I was the epitome of this song back in the '70's when I was a teenager. Thanks a lot for taking me back in time...😉
Great choice! 10CC is what happened when amazing sound engineers reminded us they were also amazing musicians....
It Was Actually The Receptionist On The Desk! They Called Her In To Do Some Vocal Backing!
I was a kid in the 70's, I took my little red transistor radio everywhere. This song was a favorite of mine.
Sadly, Katir Redfern, the female voice on the song, passed away 11 November, 2021
A hauntingly beautiful song...and, yes, he IS in love, but he is incapable of admitting it, even to himself. This is because of his repressed childhood. ( " Be quiet, big boys don't cry ).....sung so tenderly it just shouts out to you. I've loved this song for years. 💕
I agree that he is in love, and he knows he is in love, but he doesn’t want to admit it to her because she doesn’t care about him. Anyway, that’s what it says to me.
@@eliseobrien7709 she loves him too
Nice work Daniel 10cc we're very innovative and so many great song like Rubber Bullets, I'm Mandy Fly Me, Good Morning Judge, Life is a Minestrone, Wall Sreet Shuffle, Dreadlocks Holiday and one of my favourites Art for Art's Sake
I was 16, and started out with my now wife in June 1975. The song was a sensation. I'm not technically/musically minded but I understand there were many tapes merged into one for this song. 10cc are one of my favourite groups. Musical genius.
Absolute Classic...I Would Highly Recommend 10CC "Dreadlock Holiday" For The Next One To Check Out By Them.
One of the few songs that I love that used 80s production techniques heavily.
The 4 of them would each put on a track….a ahhhhh vocal…each one of them…then ooohss…..and….ehhhhssss……many different back up sounds…..then kept recording them until they had six hundred different voices making these back up vocals ……….they then each took a couple of tracks with their assigned sounds…and played the board like a keyboard…bringing them in and out….it’s……brilliance.
Old school SFX,
Welcome to the 60s and 70s. Let yourself be guided, let yourself be rocked.
This came out when I was in High School, it was amazing then and sounds just as good today. 70s Rock
Layers and layers of vocals. So cool how they did that!
So cute this kid's reaction to such an amazing old song, very open minded 🤗
He was never allowed to show emotion growing up, as that was taught to young boys at that time. He's in love... when this song came out we fell in love with this song. Call the radio station to play it. lol
He’s in love and trying to deny it to himself. One of my favorites in the school years (70’s).
10cc one of the best bands ever, one of my favourites is labelled with love
This entire album is amazing. One Night In Paris, The Second Sitting For The Last Supper, and Life Is A Minestrone. Check it out.
One of their best tracks that many dont know of is Somewhere In Hollywood a wonderful piece of prog rock. Superb
Let’s not forget that the “big boys don’t cry” clip was also famously used in the Dickie Goodman classic “Mr Jaws” 😂
I remember Mr. Jaws, Rex. Those crazy sound bites that Dickie Goodman played . He was too funny. Those were my Summers in the 70's, living in Hawaii. My Father was in the Air Force, my family moved to Hawaii, in the 1970's, when I was 9 or 10. Best of Times. Wonderful memories. ☺️☺️♥️
My Dad was an Air Force Veteran. He passed away in 2018. ☹️
My favorite mellow song ( of all time ). I never get tired of it - and doubt I ever will. Beautiful - innovative - and those lyrics always hit me right in the feels.
My favourite 10cc song and I don’t listen to it very often so that when I do it retains its power. Oh and Daniel I totally agree about Marvel, I’m all superheroed out at the moment
The more he denies his love, the more obvious his love is. Clever, clever, clever.
They were neck to neck at the top of the charts with Queen Bohemian Rhapsody around the same time I believe. Both bands devoted new technologies
Fun fact is that they called 10CC that name because one of the guys read that it was the average volume of human ejaculate.
Reminds me a bit of the naming of Steely Dan.
Great track with tech ahead of its time
I've enjoyed this song for decades. Not having seen any live performance or video has enhanced its mysterious quality for me.
Hes in love. Its tongue in cheek in response to Stewart's wife questioning him saying he loves her. Married 50 years.
I was about your age when this came out. 50 years later ( i think?) and it's good to see it being appreciated again.
WOW! What an incredible backstory, and you've added so much to my understanding of this (still) heartbreaking classic. Thanks so much for posting.........
Billy Joel "Just the way you are" also has a multi voice background.
The 70's was an epic time for music, experimenting our limits, many many different genre's. I know, I know, o.k. boomer, ha ha. But it's true. We will never experience that type of exploration again.
Typical 70's music, which means, it's a genre all to itself, and it incorporates every genre available at the time. What a time.
Wow.. I was 15 and madly in love with my now husband when this song was released. The memories are flooding in.
One of my keyboards that I used to play had this type of chorus angel like singing song and it was used here for the first time with amazing effect . Love this song and the way it was produced.
This was a big hit for 10cc. Graham Gouldman, a member of 10cc who co-wrote the song, was a very prolific songwriter for other acts and wrote some of the most well-known and popular pop-rock hits of the 60s and early 70s. In 1999, the BBC did an episode of its fantastic show _Songwriters Circle_ in which he appeared with Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House, solo) and Roddy Frame (Aztec Camera) -- three of the best songwriters of the modern pop era, backing each other up on their songs. Most of it's on UA-cam and I can't recommend it highly enough. This song is one of the ones they do together.
It was a BIG hit when I was young. Nothing like it.
Was a big 10cc fan in high school. The songs “How Dare You” and “Lazy Ways” are a potent back to back album opener. Saw them live in 1977. They rocked pretty hard. Good reaction.
This was experimental back in the day. Since I was in Elementary school in the 70’s, I always believed this was a beautiful & haunting love song. You reacting to “I’m Not In Love”
Daniel you’re right, the protagonist was in denial, and he was in love. Holy Cow after all these years!! Great reaction, Daniel. ❤❤❤
10cc were all highly accomplished songwriters and musicians. They could all sing, play multiple instruments, write, produce, engineer, and were innovative artistically and technically. This was a highly influential song when it was released in 1975, and a hit. Apparently it influenced Freddie Mercury when he was writing and arranging Bohemian Rhapsody. Highly recommend delving into their albums Original Soundtrack, Sheet Music, and How Dare You. Next song I would recommend is Art For Art’s Sake or I’m Mandy, Fly Me.
I was a freshman in high school when this came out. This brought back some awesome memories.
This came out when I joined the Army. Everyone used to go quiet when it was playing.
GREAT REVIEW, AND EXCELLENT IN-DEPTH GLIMPSE INTO THIS SONG WHICH HIT THE RADIO STATIONS WHEN I WAS 13 YEARS OLD!!
THANK YOU FOR REACTING AND SHARING!
Music will never rival what was made in 70s🙂
A wave of sound washing over you, I like that analysis.
This is what art sounds like.
They were great live too.
Lazy Ways is my favourite.
I already had a lot of appreciation for this song, but just knowing the backstory multiplied it many times! Pure genious, sounds simple but it's soooo complex!
“Dreadlock holiday “ is another great song of theirs.
That's a great song. I remember that song growing up. He wants to see her but don't want a comment.
I was 10 going on 11! Had my own little radio and heard this.
@@cherylreichardt I was about the same age.
Pure bliss from a transistor radio.
The line, It's just a silly phase I'm going through. As I grew older I found that to be true.
@@cherylreichardt so maybe the voice telling him he’s not in love is a telling him the truth and he’s struggling to not get swept off in emotional tsunami like the background vocals suggest.
"The lady doth protest too much, methinks"
This song came out when I was 14. Amazing sound back then. Still a brilliant song.
Timeless,,iconic,,
Child of Vision, by a different group, Supertramp, the studio version from the Breakfast In America album is also a great track. All 7 minutes plus of it with a superb keyboard solo.
Kathy Redfern's retirement was 'made' with this one crazy accidental inclusion on the smash hit. Residuals! How wonderful and what a nice perk for the secretary. 😂
I remember hearing this song during the movie and telling my son 'Ohhh, good song!'.
Guardians of the Galaxy, that is. I had no idea it was in the other movies.
Discordian Saints. Brilliant band and quite funny. Good Morning Judge is one of my all time favorite videos.
It warms my heart to see so many young people listening to the 70s and 80s music and loving it.
Looping the voice dozens and dozens of times. Perfect
seems like a very complex song. Absolutely Beautiful!!!!!
For your knowledge it was instrumental spacial created for this sounds .
Classic 70’s!
Song and production is haunting
When Daniel says the first few seconds "I like the atmosphere it's making" I'm thinking, just wait! LOL
Dreadlock Holiday, another 10cc song, is about cricket. (the group is British).
Spot on Daniel, he’s SO in love !! But scared to put himself out there
