    The most impressive thing is that these GIGANTIC wild animals that have had limited exposure to humans held still and didn't fight or try to flee. They recognized that they were trying to help. ❤

      Usually whale rescuers are men. Most women do not have the physical strength required for the work and are not hard wired to take the risks necessary for the work. It really is men's work. That's just how it is. I hope I marry a man who does this sort of work personally. Sincerely, a realistic and rational woman.

      The members of the Italian Coast Guard are really underappreciated even here in Italy: they help people in danger, protect the enviroment from polluters and illegal fishing, fight smugglers and drug traders...but since they also help adrift refugees and migrants a lot of people insult and criticizes them.

      Sperm whales do not eat great whites or people. They eat giant squid, octopus and such. They also know when someone has good or ill intentions toward them. Hence the stories of them attacking whalers yet being completely placid and cooperative when being rescued like this. Sperm whales are my other mates as well as humpbacks. And I really admire the men who do this work. These are real men... kind and masculine at the same time.

    • @janedoex8345
      @janedoex8345 6 років тому +35

      scanjet1000 Of course not. Im fact there are no record of sperm whales willingly attacking humans, but the risk is not to get hit by their tail flip while they are struggling and trying to free themselves in panic. Luckily they seem to notice they are helped and stop moving too much But it's still risky, one accidential whip from a whales tail could crush a diver instantly. But on many occasions, whales were even cautious and stopped or turned to not run into divers in many encounters. It's amazing these huge animals even "care" enough and willingly tried to avoid to risk harming us tiny strangly swimming beings. They are much bigger so they simply could expect us to move for sure ! There were also cases when whales took humans or other small animals under their pectotal fin to hide and protect them when big sharks were around. Some say it's because they thought the humans being some sort of calfs, but i think they are too intelligent to mistake us for their offspring. We don't look like a calf, we smell and behave different and we don't make any similar noises. But they somehow decided we are worth to be protected anyways....Isn't it amazing?

      Yeah, very dangerous rescue. Sperm whales can stun and even kill you with their sonar. Just them wanting to get a good look at you could be fatal... the sound is so powerful, it can vibrate you to death. A researcher once tried to push off with one hand against one that got too close, and it stunned his arm so badly that he couldn't move it for 5 hours.

      I'm glad to say I'm no expert of any kind...;-D
      I think it's likely that the divers weren't able to use any type of serious cutting instrument due to the possible danger of injuring the whales, as well as themselves, if the whale had made any sudden movement.
      Patience, perseverance, and the will of good hearts/minds paid off without any of the participants suffering any injuries. Sometimes, what seems to be so small can turn out to be far too big for us to see.....maybe because some of us only see what we choose to.
      Don't know if you've ever heard this one....."A Day In The Life of a Plankton".....
      Got up,
      Went swimming,
      Was swallowed by a whale,
      Became a mystic.
      (A bit corny, I suppose, as I learnt that one when I was about 20. I've just turned 69).
      Have a good day, stay safe and well.....from an Irishwoman in the UK...;-)

      Patricia : I believe you are correct Patricia, not knowing all the factors involved, it’s easy to say ‘ Why didn’t you do this or that?’ But as long as the impediment is removed, without lasting harm to the whale, and without stressing it further, and ensuring his own safety too, what matters is a positive outcome, that was achieved, job done 👍🏻😊
