Più delle opere create nello stesso periodo, questa sinfonia sembra rispondere ad una concezione della musica intesa come puro godimento. L'accuratezza del disegno formale, la ricerca dei particolari e l'uso abbondante di coloriti sono le caratteristiche dello stile di Haydn, che tuttavia, anche in questa fase di sosta, rinnova incessantemente le sue formule. Iniziata, si direbbe per puro passatempo, l'opera acquista man mano di intensità e finisce per raggiungere, attraverso il percorso ascendente dei quattro movimenti, quell'universo sonoro di gioia che costituisce anche il punto di arrivo delle Parigine e delle Londinesi. ADAGIO CANTABILE: Qui Haydn ha concentrato i suoi doni di improvvisazione, esulando per una volta dagli schemi della "canzone" o del pezzo contemplativo. Ciò non significa che egli abbia abbandonato le vie normali di espressione, anzi questa pagina costituisce una adunata dei modi prediletti come le sordine ai violini, i contrasti piano-forzando, staccato-legato all'interno di una stessa battuta, i riccioli melodici, i trilli risolutivi, il brusco stacco di una sezione drammatica che rompe la meditazione per introdurre un clima di tempesta, passione, violenza. Ma il discorso procede meno inquadrato e come più spontaneo, passando lentamente dalle iniziali tenerezze pastorali ancora immerse in un alone settecentesco, alla nettezza di una melodia solare, proiettata sui registri alti, a piena voce, come non era ancora accaduto in nessun altra sinfonia! Si deve annoverare tra i tempi lenti più interessanti della produzione haydniana. LDC

N.R. V. More than the types of instruments being modern or authentic, I am interested in their number. One can't change the number of the winds required to play (in this case a pair of oboes, horns and bassoons) but can adjust the number of strings accordingly. Authentics somehow are interested in OVPP style in vocal music but I rarely hear it in instrumental music. Why did I write this long paragraph? It is because both version you mentioned, Harnoncourt and Hogwood, do not sound to me richer or poorer but rather loud, crowded, noisy. Whey don't they simply use OI(nstrument)PP? These sort of chamber music symphonies would sound, I think, much more fresh and clear.
