As much as I'd *love* to say this unambiguously, that's a reductive description of pre-medieval Rites of the "Office of Fraternization [Same-Sex Union]." It parallels a reasonable amount of the rite of Holy Matrimony, *BUT* it was not marriage by any means. In fact, matrimony was not even valued as much as we value it today until the 20th century. In the first three centuries, considering marriage *equal to* celibacy was considered heretical (read the early patristics, they're a real doozy). On the other hand, though, the "traditional marriage" view can only be traced as early as the 1500s, when the Roman Catholic Church instituted Holy Matrimony as a Sacrament rather than a Rite, and made the office of its ministration necessarily public. This is when finally the doctrine of "one man, one woman" actually shows up for the first time, and has reached a nearly idolatrous level in fundamentalist spaces. I'm a Side-A AffirmingTM Christian. As a Christian and a critical thinker, a lot of the Bible doesn't make much sense and I still am trying to understand the contexts. It makes me sad to see how people blindly follow this book as if God posessed the minds of men and had them write these things. The Bible is written by humans and contains their thoughts, words, language of the time it was written, and then poorly translated over the centuries until today. Hunter you put it perfectly when you said that there was no word to describe a same sex loving relationship back then. The only context people had in ancient times for same sex behavior was related to prostitution and other such things. Those who were attracted to the same sex were often not public about things as society would probably stone them to death or etc because ancient times were quite brutal and violent. An actual same sex relationship in the Bible describes it as a "brotherly bond between 2 friends" despite them having kissed and their souls had been "knit together", wording that in most contexts would describe a loving same sex relationship, but there wasn't a word for same sex attraction back then.
You know the bible was written by men inspired through the Holy Spirit, if that was not true there would be no faith. He gave us the scripture for a reason bruh.
the bible is the inspired word of God, written by men through the holy spirit. if the bible is the work of man and poorly translated then how can you trust it? our modern version can be completely different and you wouldn't even know. and there are word to describe same sex relationships. In Leviticus 20 it says "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them." If God approved of same sex relationships he could have easily said so, its not hard. That verse could have said something like "if a man lies with another man it is a honorable and blessed" see its not hard.

You can always tell when a group of women you pass is Christian because they'll all be wearing skirts without exceptions. It's not like no non-Christian women ever wear skirts of course, but if it's an entire group of women with _only_ skirts? Especially if they're rather modest skirts with small heels? Most likely a Christian group. We'd often pass a group of girls on our way to school who were on their way to a Christian school in the area and they ALL wore skirts, always, no matter the weather or temperature. One of them was even kicked from her school because the school found out that her parents had a TV in the attic. Yep, TV's weren't allowed either. Because apparently their faith is so weak that even _looking_ at a TV could be enough to destroy their faith.
Isn’t that verse in the book of Romans referring to men (and women) having sex, sometimes even straight up orgies, with temple prostitutes. I’m not saying the Bible is completely unproblematic by today’s standards (it’s just natural, afterall it reflects the cultural norms of an ancient society), but the best argument you can make for that are the verses about “sodomy” in the Old Testament, which also state one can’t wear mixed fabrics and can’t eat shellfish etc.
the passage states: men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another. its pretty clear its talking about homosexual acts
I’m not a scholar of Classical Greek or an expert in Bible history. So don’t take my word for it. The original 1:27 passage simply refers to men giving up on “natural” (phusikos) sex with women (presumably their wives) for “unnatural” sex with “others”. He also uses the term “orexis” (translated in KJV as “vile affections” which can mean frenzy or intoxicatioin and was associated with Pagan fertility rites where men had orgies with temple prostitutes. There’s also Corinthians 6:9 in which the term “arsenokoitai” is used, which refers to male prostitutes.

hunter, i have a goodfaith critique of your christianity takes, from an atheistic perspective. you keep saying "the bible isnt homophobic" i get WHY you say this, you probably dont want to trap any potential progressive christians in the audience between a rock and a hard place. EG if you can convince a christian that god isnt homophobic, then christians dont have to choose between their religion and progressivism, but theres a problem with this. if god, or his prophets, who SPEAK for god, ordered leviticus 20:13 leviticus 18:22, sodom and Gomorrah, corinthians 6:9-10, romans 1:26-27, plus, the fact that religiosity has been one of the largest driving forces for homophobic legislation, then perhaps a slightly different take than yours is the correct one. if your take is "the bible isnt homophobic, therefore its okay to be a gay christian" perhaps a more accurate take would be "yes, christianity is homophobic, thats why christianity is BAD, because the word of its texts causes harm" a subtly different take that seems to fit the evidence much better. best wishes bro. 🤘
I've never really thought about the bible passages regarding gendered clothing until now. Adam and Eve weren't provided clothing in Eden, so why would God care who wears what? Pretty sure that it's understood that when they say that they feel understood in a queer marriage, they mean that the other person understands the feeling of being attracted to the same gender.

The early Christian Church had gay marriage so his “traditional marriage” argument holds as much water a broken clay pot. God love everyone the way he made them and that includes gay people. :)

In Leviticus 20 it says "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them."
If God approved of same sex relationships he could have easily said so, its not hard.
That verse could have said something like "if a man lies with another man it is a honorable and blessed"
see its not hard.
@@branlan895 Exactly. They were inspired by God via the Holy Spirit. But it was still written by man and thus is flawed. There are too many inconsistencies (especially in the old testament) for it to be "the infallible word of God" as many conservatives like to say. I'm from the Netherlands, and in the Dutch bible belt, it's absolutely considered wrong for women to wear pants.

There’s also Corinthians 6:9 in which the term “arsenokoitai” is used, which refers to male prostitutes.

if god, or his prophets, who SPEAK for god, ordered leviticus 20:13 leviticus 18:22, sodom and Gomorrah, corinthians 6:9-10, romans 1:26-27, plus, the fact that religiosity has been one of the largest driving forces for homophobic legislation,
then perhaps a slightly different take than yours is the correct one.
