In part 2 of our series on undoing some DIY repairs, we figure out why this Trailblazer has no rear brakes after the customer replaced the calipers. Also, the A/C compressor is making a lot of noise, the HVAC blower only works on high, the rear axle seals are leaking, and a few other things.

I do MOST of my own repairs-but there are some things that I leave to the pros.But.when you make sub standard repairs,ESPECIALLY TO BRAKES AND STEERING,you are endangering people other than yourself!Crappy repairs need to be called out.
@@WatchWesWork I used to work professionally in the automotive business. You did fine. I've seen crap that just screams stupid. Back then we didn't have access to the information we do now. their really isn't any excuse for some of the errors we saw in the last video. Also scotty is a shill.

I didn't think you were picking on anyone or being disrespectful. Over the years I have done some amazing repairs but I have also made my share of mistakes because, as you explained, I simply didn't know any better. Watching your videos is a great way to learn and avoid some mistakes. So thank you.

I've been working on cars since I was 14 and I'm still learning, it's one of the reasons I watch your channel. That and your wisecracks. Some people just want to complain. One of the downsides of the internet is it has given voice to village idiots.

If a bad repair happens to be DIY - it's still a bad repair.
I but my 2003 years ago and I promise you that all I have done is dumped money into it. But I paid $20,000 for this EXT LT. The mechanic insisted that it is over engineered. The wiring seems to be the main culprit but living in Florida with the moisture level and electrical issues not a good mix. I am shopping but just about everything I've looked at it seems to be made of plastic.
@@Leolioness44 believe it or not, proper application of plastics can be a good thing. Key word, proper, as in warrented from an engineering perspective, not accounting. I bought a 2003 Honda Element shitbox with 280,000 miles on it for 500$ (I like thrift shopping for cars and flipping em)
All I needed to put into it was a new upper control arm (rust), battery, clutch, brake lines (came with calipers and rotors done) and weld a few rust spots.
3 years and 60,000 miles later, it's still good. Started leaking a bit from drain pan, but some RTV fixed that.
Plastic everywhere in the engine bay, thermostat housings, radiators, you name it. Actually ended up being a godsend bc I live in northern MI, and the only thing of consequence that rusted was all of the bolts which was expected. Fluid film is your friend if you live in the rust belt.
It's still gutless, boring, handles and looks like crap, but it's still my daily. That being said, I've got a c6 vette for the weekends, a 2001 f550 w/utility bed and preinstalled crane for big loads, and idgaf about the drive to work bc the damn thing just won't die.
I did put in mount points for the tow bar just in case my wife needs to come drag me home though.
Operating cost: less than 680$ a year including insurance LOL. When the time comes, I'm just gonna demolition derby it and buy another beateR.
Don't get me started on BMW and their alternator brackets though... I ate 3000$ on a m3 flip because everything kept breaking.

It has been my dog car for my golden retrievers that I have bread for several years. It also transported my for children. We live in Florida on the coast but the body seems pretty good. I had some wiring issues and that was basically because the coating started crumbling away. I guess that's when the local rats decided to set up house and start eating the outer coating on the wiring because it had soy protein in it. My vehicle only has 158000 MI on it. But all I have done is repairs. I don't guess I should be complaining
@@Leolioness44 hey I dont blame you- I wont touch electrical with a 10 foot pole. Removing the dash and sorting through harnesses is the stuff of my nightmares, and I'd sooner dump the car. I might do a splice if it's easy to isolate and reach but usually not worth it to dig around for too long.
All I'm saying is that I don't think plastic is a deal breaker. Just make sure to research the common problems encountered with the specific make, model, and year of whatever you're gonna buy, decide if that's something you can fix/live with, and get the vehicle looked at real thorough.
Buddy's DIY on UA-cam has a fantastic and comprehensive series on how to inspect and buy a used car/truck. He's based out of FL, Orlando, I think . He also flips cars full-time. If I was in the area, I'd probably buy one off him just for the peace of mind. Love his content, it's very helpful and entertaining.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos and the way you are honest about the mistakes that were either made by yourself, the manufacturer, or the vehicle owners. As to those who attempted to berate, denigrate, and/or chastise you for you having noted the bad or dangerous DIY repairs in your video, it would be my position that all of your videos are made expressly to point out to the viewing public what is wrong, what needs repairing, and why the repairs need to be made.
The truck's owner either knows you or knows of your business and/or has been assured by someone that you are a competent repairman who operates an honest business or he would not have entrusted his vehicle to your care. Further, I am sure that the truck's owner is aware that you video the repairs that you make for your own personal liability protection and that of your business and that you post those videos on your UA-cam channel. As such, he would not need anyone coming to his defense as you have said that a few viewers have done, inasmuch, as he could do that himself if he was offended and felt that it was necessary to confront you on the matter, which apparently he has not and did not. Keep being who and what you are, both you and your son will profit from your honesty.
Personally, knowing people for 78 years of life, I do not believe that there is a mechanic anywhere in the world who when he comes across a bad DIY mistake, does not show that mistake to fellow mechanics and/or others to wonder at and/or for their information and possible liability if the mistake is not corrected.
Don't apologize for that man, not necessary. If they found your professional comments offensive, well, they know where the door is ...

I might drive 20 year old junk but i know it will get me where i need to go. Plus not having a car payment is great.
To prevent the garter spring from coming off an oil seal while you are driving it into place, fill the back of the seal with grease. This method was taught to me by an old school mechanic in the 80’s and has never failed me.
I myself think you have a really good channel and love to watch even though, I'm 70 and won't work on
cars anymore. I think you go above and beyond what I would do towards fixing some of the clunkers
you work on. Doing good boy and don't sweat what others say. To thine on self be true.
This stuff makes me really appreciate living in Florida. I have a 2007 Trailblazer, 5.3 V8, 2wd. Its at 190,000 miles now and not a speck of rust on it, even the stupid wax coating is intact.

I subscribed to this channel - very happily, I might add, because you have wonderful content and the wit and sarcasm abounds - I REALLY LIKE IT!!!! I'm also very glad you keep the comments, as you say, PG-13. There are folks who simply fail to perform any reasonable attack on automotive problems - like the idiot that wanted to drill out a keeper on his doorsill and drilled straight into the wire loom on a relatively new piece of very expensive loading equipment - yes, he was an idiot - PERIOD. I've been a backyard mechanic since I was 15 and I'm 69 now. By the way, I rode Submarines for 24 years, I was an Engineering Test Analyst at NASA for 8 years, and a Quality Engineer in the Nuclear Industry for 20 years. For all that time, I was known for not playing well with others due to me not having a any tolerance for stupid. Thusly, STAY TO THE GAME PLAN WES!!! For those of us who understand, no explanation is necessary, for those who don't understand, no explanation IS POSSIBLE!!!!
Wes, my brother in-law and I where looking at a couple of Kenworth T800's, thought I could have poked my finger through the back of the diff housings. Frames and all, where in good condition, but the diffs where basket cases. So your pics of the tin case backs brought back the memory.

I’m a DIY mechanic, electrician, plumber, roofer, carpenter, welder, you name it I try it. Channels like yours help me gain exposure and knowledge to give me an experience bank to draw from. You’re an awesome guy with an awesome channel. I hope to someday grow my channel like yours
In my DIY days, we did all our vehicle repairs.Our guide was Motor's Auto Repair Manual. Of course, this was during the 50's and 60's. It was a lot simpler but not necessarily any easier. I spent lots of time laying on a concrete floor fixing one vehicle or another.
Ah ues, as for the people complaining about your videos regarding DIY repairs...
A common name for those would be “snowflakes’.
Those will complain about just anything as soon as they leave their safe space.
You should not need to apologise because of their sensitivity.

I believe the reason people were upset weren't because they were "snowflakes" but rather he was absolutely trashing the customer on the job they did and the modifications they chose to make. While his criticisms weren't unwarranted as the previous job was done fairly poor and with questionable parts he was undoubtedly being harsh. Maybe it wouldn't have drawn attention if this wasn't a customer's vehicle but the idea that you could bring your vehicle to a mechanic for repair only to have them essentially "publicly" insult you and your repairs is off putting at the very least. This is why people in the comments resonated with the customer as Wes' reaction wasn't entirely appropriate give that he was creating a video.
Of course, anyone that watches Wes' videos with any consistency could tell you that he is normally not that critical of customers' vehicles and is overall a pretty nice and reasonable guy even in situations where it would be appropriate that he would not be. For that reason, this particular video in question is an anomaly and should not be used as medium to formulate any type of opinion on Wes' character or professionalism especially given his excellent track record.
Again, maybe not necessary but I'd like to reiterate that just because someone or some people are bothered by something that you aren't that doesn't make them a "snowflake".
@@dennykruger5391 It is a common bias (esp. on the internet) to be agitated about something when people consume too little information to form an informed opinion about a subject. Like having only seen this in one video but not really on a daily basis or knowing what a normal shop conversation looks like. The context of rusty chassis and the teeth of time also shifts this a bit in this direction. I guess it would change if some people look under their car from time to time or spend more time in a garage.
I don't think calling out improper methods as such is a bad thing, road safety is not only relevant to the driver, it is also for the traffic around him, it's usually outside your control. I've got no clue what the legal situation in the US is about this, but knowingly handing the car back to the customer who will be operating it on public roads might have consequences for a mechanic as well should he notice that. As soon as the sh*t hits the fan it will be blamed on the mechanic anyway. But the customer asked for fixing the brake system, what has been achieved in a professional manner, problem solved. Watching a video after the fact and then blaming the customer for having it fixed is pointless.

I concur with those who tell you not to apologize, but for a slightly different reason. A bodge is a bodge, whether the bodger is a DIYer or a pro. That is how I took your observations, and they were both valid and valuable.

Brother you are 100% correct I applaud you for addressing those comments from people however I am an avid DIY-er. I do my research before I tackle any project to know if my skill level can handle it but you are 100% correct the difference between a professional and me is that person has more experience and can a dentify an error or knows the tricks to do and it the right way. I research on my projects before I dig in and decide to do them if I'm not comfortable doing those and then I do seek help from a mechanic. I do get a great sense of accomplishment on doing my own repairs but I also have huge respect for mechanic that is capable of doing everything..Just found your channel I do enjoy it keep up the videos stay safe
Wes, you are gifted mechanical individual who has applied training, experience and the ability to get information from the web to bring a huge value to your customers. The peanut gallery is not something you want to deal with bit it comes with territory of "success" :) Those monkeys are however a good test of how things are received. Good job addressing the comments. You bring a very humble personality to your channel along with Pup and your family. As a mechanical technician you are one of the exceptions. I suggest you take more of the approach of "this guy did all the right things.......let's see what we can do to help...........

I bash Professionals all the time since I can do things better than the stealership can 90% of the time. I live in Houston where Scotty is. When I was a kid he was on the local TV station. He would answer viewers questions. I recall watching as a kid with my grandpa who was a mechanic and he frequently pointed out bad advice Scotty was giving out.
This dude is man enough to apologize, and to do it actually on camera. Huge thumbs up, and you earned a subscriber.
When he replaced the rear brakes, he just wanted to do burnouts, so he made sure they wouldn’t work.

Hay Wes I will always try to fix my car but I have learnt over the years somethings are best left to the professionals and this knowledge is very much money driven. It’s cheaper to get a professional to diagnose and repair somethings than to throw parts at it yourself .
I watched your video on the Chevy Silverado and I certainly did not think you were being at all disrespectful to amateurs working on the vehicles. I live in the U.K. and our MOT test (Ministry of Transport) for vehicles is so strict it is unbelievable. Your customers should think themselves lucky to have a mechanic like you because if their vehicles were subjected to our MOT they would have the vehicle ordered off the road. Great videos hope to watch many more.
No worries. I have no problem with your comments regarding customer vehicles or DIY work. That Chevy pickup is a rust bucket, and I'm not a fan of lift modifications done for the sake of being cool. I like your work and how you take time to point out and fix problems. It reminds me of the radio show Sam's Garage.

Your comments on the DIY work were 100% correct and warranted. You could be saving someone's life teaching them about the wrong way to do brakes.
However, "it's a kid's book" is a bit toxic. There's plenty in it for adults to enjoy, but the point is, hopefully you were just teasing and don't actually believe she should stop being proud of something she likes.
I’m a UA-cam certified mechanic 🤪 I watch tons of videos like these before attempting a repair and usually get lucky. I also know my limitations though. I have learned a lot over the years and really enjoy getting my hands dirty. Thanks for the content, nice work.

Your neighborhood reminded me of my former brother-in-law. He lived in the Quad-Cities area and amongst other things he flew crop dusting airplanes. Lots of good stories from him. I think his flying days were pre-Vietnam. The Army tried to talk him into helicopters , but said no thanks and joined the Air Force.
I started out doing my own DIY then I received training and I still do most of my own DIY, brother you are doing a fine job on what you are given to work on. I have watch many of your videos and at times I caught myself saying " no wes do it this way", then I stop to remind myself that I am not there doing the work so I really don't know what I'm talking about! My advice for all of the desktop mechanics out there is this, If you are not the one doing the work, then stay sitting down, shut up, and pay attention, you might just learn something. I find it super helpful that you point them out in detail.
Please don´t stop and in fact do the exact opposite instead. Go into even more detail of the mistakes that were made by DIYers and the damage that was caused! You will save me some money and maybe my life.
No apology necessary, I saw the videos when they were first posted and didn't feel that at all, you were professional about it and supportive. I've seen people who didn't handle things well and were worthy of criticism. These are cars and safety is important so hold your line with what is right and remain respectful like you were. The keyboard warriors are too sensitive.
Hey you are the one fixing issues that others created so i think you were right giving a little crap as you were doing the job correctly and making it safe for your customer. You are a great source of information on how to do the job correctly

I enjoy your work and watching what you do. I've been a DIY'r for years and any time I mess it up and a pro points it out, I never get offended but am grateful for the opportunity to learn. For all those candy asses out there whose feelings are hurt, grow up!!
