So, basically what they gave Kazuya as his "victory theme" in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, where the Tekken 7 announcer simply states, "Kazuya Mishima wins" with no help from Smash Bros' own announcer?
Tekken 1: Every Tekken 2: Game Tekken 3: Pushes Tekken Tag: The Tekken 4: Standards Tekken 5: Of Tekken 6: Fighting Tekken Tag 2: Game Tekken 7: NOT YOU Tekken 8: Graphics
To be honest, after the (unacceptable) "failure" of TT2 with less than 2 million sells, Tekken 7 ended up with less budget But at least it's better than Namco killing off the franchise instead
Tekken 4 will always be my favorite game in terms of graphics, the water effects, the echo, the physics of the characters' hair and how it reacts to the environment or attacks, the lighting, etc. The game came out in 2001 and still looks good even today, simply a gem if we talk about visuals, it reminds me a lot of mgs2 and the tremendous graphic leap it had compared to solid 1.
The graphics jump from TK1 to TK2 and then to TK3 is impressive, not only visually but in art style and character design as well, Given the fact all 3 games were made for PS1,
Also let's remember that those early games were yearly releases: 94, 95 and 96. That kind of effort cant be seen anymore in this industry, that is incredible the more we think about it. The arcade fg genre was on peak popularity in the 90s, totally unmatched still today, and 3d graphics were also so hyped that Namco was determined to push the investment on 3d graphics so hard that way. I mean, in the end it's still a niche genre, not the making of a new Zelda... And still Namco was working hard to make TK push the boundaries and look impressive not only in the context of the genre but in the whole gaming. (Also Sega was in a similar journey with VF2 and notably VF3, etc) The companies thought it was worth investing in fgs so hard as if they were as notable as mainstream games... put so much effort in TK3 so it shows a level of 3d refinement that serves to advertise the company's 3d tech.
But that hype cooled down after the 90s, so fgs were no longer among the preferred genres to pick a game that will be heavily invested and will advertise the company's new advancements in 3d tech. The attention then became focused on the actual mainstream franchises to be used for that goal: new games from Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, etc. Like, even SF6's standards, that are higher and past titles, are below the level of Capcom's bigger franchises. And even though T8 is showing good technical standards, they are no longer meant to match the same standards that exist outside the genre (that are higher). Because that ambition to push TK's graphics that much far dont exist anymore. Good looking fgs like TK and MK are only meant to impress and win inside the own bubble of the fg genre. That is satisfying enough to the makers.
Then TK surpassed VF completely. Also thinking about it, who would create graphics evolution videos of VF today? There's barely any new VF content on yt... But we can find many videos celebrating TK's evolution. That also is a sign of the difference between the two games. Like, VF became sadly a low class fg franchise in terms of recognition.
Tekken made VF look like a poor man's 3D fighting game. And no I have no nostalgia for VF so Im not blinded by rosecolored glasses. No endings until 3Tb (coz Sega wants you to buy those Character CDs), and almost the same game until 3Tb. Then those ugly 2D VF games Sega tried to replace Eternal Champions with.
To see how far this series has came is incredible, and to think that there's even more for us in the future Tekken is an incredible fighting game series.
For 30 years Bandai Namco have perfected and innovated the best fighting game in history. Not only as a fighting game fan, but as Bandai Namco fan thank you for working the King of Iron Fist Tournament. And thank you Harada and Tekken team for pushing the boundaries. Without them fighting games will never be great as it should be.
That’s true, with how much of a waste this sort of thing feels like. An example being just how odd it is to have Devil Jin’s force choke win animation just simply not be a thing anymore, as much as it is somewhat referenced in one of his heat smashes
Great work. And i liked the mixed up style of how the content put together. It became more interesting than a perfectly consistent and logical (and predictable) sequence, that boosts up the artistic quality of the video.
Actually the home release of Tekken 3 is when we first see Marshall with the stache. Both in the game's intro and in Forest's ending. Also, Marshall was only replaced in T3 and the first Tag Tournament. The rest of the games still feature Marshall, and Tag 2 features both Laws.
I will never get over the fact that the time between tekken 3 and 8 in canon is 3 years and 2 months. It's fricking nuts. T3 came out in what, '98? Now it's 2024. Jeez

It's kinda complicated to ask exactly right now, when it's a little early, but i hope something similar to this video is done to celebrate Soul Edge's 30th anniversary (1996). In 2026 all major veteran 2d and 3d fg franchises will finally be in the "30 year old club". This year the 30th anniversaries will be to Tekken, King of Fighters, Darkstalkers, Marvel (Xmen Children of the Atom), and Killer Instinct.
They only really started doing the "everyone speaks their mother tongue" thing in the more recent games. Maybe in Tekken 9 Zafina will finally speak Egyptian.
I gotta be honest... nothing tops Tekken 6 for me. I mean, of course gameplay peaked at Tekken 7, but DAMN, Tekken 6 had a lot of content and was so fun to play and unlock things. I also had a blast playing online, especially around that Christmas and New Year.
Paul was a very patient man, waiting for Jack to charge up that punch. 1:09 to 1:18 - The jump in graphical quality between Tekken's 1, 2 and 3 is astounding. It's hard to believe all three were on the same console given the jump... and King's jump goes further each time as well. 1:36 - Seriously, look at Kuma in this first game. Hard to tell he's a bear; such a shady mishmash of polygons. 1:54 - The sound of Paul's punch is good in Tekken 8.
