I was fishing with some friends at a remote river mouth before dawn for Mulloway and we also had a shark bait out far - about 15 minutes after sunrise - some old salt surfers arrived and swam out into the surf (it was a shit day for waves) and they interfered with our lines and after an hour of not catching waves which weren't there they quit and approached us claiming that its a surf spot not a fishing spot. After a brief conversation, one of the men noticed my Penn Prevail overhead rod loaded with a TLD25 and lots of line out and asked me if i was fishing for sharks. I confirmed I was indeed, and he proceeded to strike me with his surfboard (not very hard mind you) and claimed it wasnt a place to fish for sharks. I understand the concern, yet the sharks we encounter are known as "coastal hunters" and it was ridiculous for him to assert that all responsibility of the threat of a potential attack seemed to rest on my shoulders. I warned him if he struck me again he wouldn't get up from my response, and if the surfers were there first, its not a spot to fish. Likewise, if the fishermen were there first, its not a spot at that time to hang 10 and float around like a retarded sitting duck. Its all of our ocean - and some common sense should prevail. I dont condone actively baiting up for sharks while surfers are around, nor entering the water when people are targeting large predators. Some people are greedy, and others are sensible.
I'm an avid fisherman and surfer but no offence, you were fishing at quite a famous surf spot, the same would happen if you tried to fish Jbay Supertubes, Mossel Bay Innerpool or Stilbaai reef. I had many times surfing at surf spots when fisherman come and I just see sinkers flying past my head.
No offence taken, I understand that...but there are a number of surf spots there, we where fishing there for 2 hrs before they rocked up, whenever I get to a spot when and there are guys all ready surfing I dont fish and move to another spot. They could've done the same, the next point was breaking beautifully to surf. But anyways it doesn't matter its done. There are just ways of doing things, the one guy surfed into my line then showed me signs from out there as if I was at fault. Bit unnecessary thats all...anyways have a lekka day🤟🏻
@@zoolookfishing I completely understand where you are coming from with me being a fisherman my whole life, so I am a bit torn in between of what is right and wrong in this situation since surfing is my other half. Normally surfers would just friendily come up to you and have a quick friendly discussion beforehand to find middle ground, but some people are just a bit more entitled to certain spots be it fisherman or surfers due to overcrowding already and now a different elemet have joined. Keep the videos coming, we'd love to see some more reef speciments being pulled out!
@@globaladminglobaladmin1079 thanks! Yes exactly...its the way some gone bout doing things. I have had on the past where the guys come and say hi, introduce themselves and then like you said we found a middle ground. I will soon head out to fish for some reef species🤟🏻👌🏻
That's why you should carry a spinning rod and throw rapala's or plugs when they surf too close to you. A heavy gauge circle or 2 or 3 trebles should teach them to keep their distance.
I fish and surf. If I get to my local beach and somebody is fishing, I never paddle out near them. Like you said mate, there is plenty of room for all and a need to respect the fellow man 🍺
This is a difficult one to deal with because I fish just as much as I surf, if you fishing at a popular surfing spot over a weekend or holiday you can’t really get to upset by guys having a surf. It’s a different story if you are at an out of the way fishing spot and some guy paddles out, then he need to move.
Fished multipliers my whole life, switched almost 10 years ago...its about the braid, more sensitive and you can pull a fish way harder than with mono. Also when fishing in the surf you can cast literally a split second before a wave hits you go under the water and just hold your hand with the rod above your head. And its way more fun with braid...getting less stuck, dragging less in the water...the list can go on and on! Have to move with the time and technology.
This is a hard topic lol I also surf and have always tried to not interfere and surf around the guys not to get hooked or bit by a shark on the line etc. Most surfers dont give a s%@t and some do not really no that they interfere. I stay out the way,as I have friends that fish and thats the one reason I know that it interferes with fishing and now I fish as well(new to it"noob")
I can understand how upset you are about the surfers, would also piss me off. I mean they have a the whole coast to surf, why take your spot? But still lekker video and I like these back to back vids!!
Not really tho with surfing only certain places are good at certain conditions, there are exponentially more fishing spots on any given day than surfing spots, if this is a popular surfing spot which it looks like it is then well I can't really blame them, it's Abit rude to paddle out when you are already there but being both a surfer and a fisherman I completely understand why they did, don't fish at popular surf spots is your best bet
I do get that, but there are a few points breaking like that on that stretch, the very next point about 500m on looked great for surfing and no-one was there...when they saw that we are fishing there they could've moved to the next point, like i would've done of they surfed there first...guess the rivalry will always be there..
Surfers is n kopseer in daai area. Soveel plek om te surf daar en min plek om te hengel... en dan wil hulle nog oorvat as jy lankal voor hulle daar was. Meeste van daai surfers gaan nog deur privaat eiendom om daar te surf. Maak mens naaarr!!

As Much as they want to surf: They Need to Realize that being 3 , against 1 Angler, doesnt make Em right , or annny More Entitled to be there. They could have been a More Considerate. There's a Guy further up Commenting about a geelstert kop at J bay: Look : Tht's a Surfing Mecca , so it's a completely different story !! lolol . I would 've Kkked my shorts if it ws me . those Surfers fists are the same size as mine ... hehehe.
Vleesbaai local here, I think the surfers were wrong because you were there first and they did not have the decency to come talking to you, on the other hand me being a surfer I know that the vleesbaai waves does not break often so I’d also be keen to surf if it was breaking, anyway you handle the situation well considering they had no respect for you! If you want to come to vleesbaai to fish again contact me (I actually live around the fransmanshoek point so it’s not actually vleesbaai but the fishing infront of my house is a lot better and no one else goes there) so let me know and I love the videos
Surfers and cyclists.... 🤣 There, I opened a can of worms.
🤣

I feel your Pain brother, guy in boats surfer dogs eating your bait it makes me crazy, better luck next time.do you use 7x7 for your f.m.j our 1x7.👍👍⚡👊
Shot...no I dont like 7×7 very much...i use carbon coated wire...fishmate or JDB...check the video I did on a fmj that i uploaded on Tuesday
Should burley up big time that way you might get bigger sharks plus scare the surfers off (hopefully)
Next tym do Wat I do, cast a nice 8 ounce on their heads, works everytym
🤣 felt like doing it
If your lines in first, leave it there. What happens, happens 🤷♂️. Side note- why the switch from multipliers to grinders? Okes scared of over winds?
