At 61, I have read more books and watched more videos on the golf swing than most. This is the best explanation of a golf methodology that actually works, that I can personally attest. So much so, that I have had people at the range stop their practice and watch me swing, trying to figure out how I am sending the golf ball so far down range with minimal effort. Once you break the “hit” the golf ball with your arms mentality, and believe me, it is not easy, you will crush the ball. Every time I am at the practice range, I step back and watch how many people are trying to “hit” the golf ball. Most times, it is 100% of the people I observe. For me, it is an awareness of an inward relaxation...a calmness of the arms through a relaxing thought process, while everyone else grunting and heaving. It is amazing.

I started playing golf two years ago and had no clue how to swing a club. I then saw an older gentlemen smash shot after shot with what appeared to be 50-60% effort and needed to know how and why it worked. I then discovered this video and made it a goal to understand and execute this technique. Today I am an 8 handicap and completely give credit to this video. Thank you, after studying your video so that I exactly understood heave, deadfall, counter fall, counter rotation and whip sling, I hit some balls on the practice ground. Wow! After 5 or 6 attempts I experienced the effortless strikes you talk about, and, my chronic problem of hitting “heavy” turf before ball shots disappeared. I commend this to anyone attempting to play golf.
Around 1970 I went to a clinic by bob poa and he talked about gravity feeds the club. In March of 1973, Jack nicklaus had an article in Golf magazine and it was title Gravity Feeds the club. Since that time I have Always Let myu arms just fall and in the process hit the ball around 280 to 310 on the drive. I now teach this to all my students. Keep up the good work, I've never had a back proplem.

This is well explained, I got your program from a buddy that bought it and couldn't do the drills because he felt "foolish" at the range, I've viewed it a million times and it just makes sense. At 41 years old and a 6 handicap "been stuck there for a while", I committed to doing the drills 6 months ago and it has changed the way that I swing, not exhausted after my round and truly am hitting the ball much farther with killer accuracy. Some of the longest golf shots I have hit are when I try and hit a lazy and accurate shot. Try and welly it, anything could happen!! So timing, muscle tension, weight transfer and of course arc, are key. Brilliant video, this makes sense now. I have a feeling this is going to be one of the best tips ever!! Even after playing for decades, now at age 69, I hit the ball like I never have before--and consistently, and without keeping a thousand things in my head on the tee! And, I can say this after helping James Black (the "Barefoot golfer" of Augusta) and retired Air Force Major General Perry M. I'm 82 years old, which puts my first golfing days back in the early 50's. Our swimming hole was next to a golf course and I discovered I could find and sell golf balls. Then I found a partially broken golf club and started playing on a par 3 that was far from the club house. If we saw the pro coming in a cart to catch us, we simply melted back into the woods until he gave up. As I entered the Air Force in 1955 I started playing more golf and even had some professional instruction. But I played for over 60 years by wrapping the club around my neck and swinging violently with my hands and arms. No one ever told me different and it looked like everyone else was doing the same thing. Several other professional lessons in the ensuing years changed nothing. Not a world about how to power a golf swing. Ah, but then came UA-cam. There is a lot of great instruction available here and, starting with Paul Wilson a few years ago, I finally learned how to swing properly. I continue to watch instruction videos and have seen hundreds and hundreds of them just in the past year or so. But this video right here is perhaps the very best one on the golf swing that I've seen. Beautifully explained and demonstrated it encapsules 99% of what you need to know to start playing good golf. Well done, sir! You're the best!

I grew up keeping my left arm straight and rippi g through the ball like it stole my lunch money...I'm trying to blend this swing with the power rotary downswing....think loose and free up and through the transition and then once the club is working down....speed...not power
Wow, wow, wow! This is spectacular!!! I justed tried "The Heave" and had the most effortless golf swings in my life! The idea to use, is as he says, is to use the initial heave to set the arms in motion all the way to the top of the backswing, then use weight shift to start the downswing. I didn't use the counter fall consciously, just a "normal weight shift", and I hit the greatest effortless golf swings of my life. Gravity Golf is on it!!!

David Lee is correct. Impact is not just about velocity. Impact is not a force thing. Impact is not an acceleration thing. Impact is a conservation of momentum thing. I realize that you may have seen a chart that shows golf clubhead speed directly related to golfball distance, but those charts are not based on laboratory experiments of a lightweight clubhead being fired from a canon in a direct line at a golfball. They are are based on actual golfers swinging actual clubs, and are for typical or average conditions.
There is both linear momentum and angular momentum. Linear momentum is velocity times mass. Angular momentum is moment of inertia times angular velocity. Angular momentum is based on a radius from the center of rotation to the center of mass, and is also based on how much of the mass is concentrated at the center of mass versus how much of the mass is spread out. If our frame of reference is the ground, then we consider the ground to not be moving, and then we would consider a golfball on the ground or on a tee to have zero momentum. So in golf impact is all about the momentum of the "system" that strikes the golfball.
The reason I say "system" is because there are many moving parts that have their own mass that are moving as a golfer swings a golf club. Imagine a "system" where the golfer's torso and arms and hands completely stop moving moments before the "system" hits the golfball. Imagine the hands becoming a completely fixed hinge as the club rotates around the hands to strike the ball. We would call this flipping the club through impact. In this case the moment of inertia would be based on only the mass of the golf club and be based on a radius between the hinge point of the hands and the point of impact. In this case the momentum of the clubhead striking the golfball would be low.
Now imagine a "system" where the golfer is rotating around their spine moments before, during, and after hitting the golf ball. Maybe we would find that the golfer's butt and thighs on down would not be rotating much, and maybe we would find that the golfer's head would not be rotating. So the mass of the "system" hitting the ball would be the torso and arms and hands and club. And the radius would now be much greater because it would be the distance between the where golfball is making contact with the clubface back to around the spine of the golfer. Note in this case both the mass and the radius of the "system" impacting the golfball is greater, so the moment of inertia of the "system" would be much greater.
We could have two cases where the clubhead speed is the same, where the flipping golfer can not hit the ball as far as the rotating golfer. And we could have two cases were the clubhead speed of the flipping golfer is greater than the clubhead speed of the rotating golfer, but the moment of inertia of the rotating golfer is enough greater to cause the golfball speed after impact to be greater than for the flipping golfer. And we could have two cases where the clubhead speed of the flipping golfer is great enough to hit the ball farther than the slower rotating golfer. These cases of course are based on the total mass of the golfers and clubs being the same, along with the clubhead face angle at impact the being same.
Just for fun. Imagine the flipping golfer weighs the same as Lee Trevino. Imagine the flipping golfer's clubhead speed is the same as Lee Trevino's clubhead speed. Lee Trevino will hit the ball with his entire torso and arms and club and will hit the ball further with the same clubhead speed, and the sound of the impact will be different. Now imagine there are different golfers that have differing amounts of flip. Maybe no flipper's torso and arms and hands actually come to a complete stop before, during, and after impact. But there are those who flip a lot. And then there are those who flip less. Based on stories I have read, you could actually go back in time to a professional golf tour event and have Lee Trevino hitting balls on the range next to another very good professional golfer, and both golfers would be hitting balls at very high levels of ability, and you could hear the difference between the way Lee Trevino's impact sounded. You would watch the other golfer and not think that they were a flipper, but they would be flipping some small amount more than Lee Trevino.
When a good golfer is at the "top" of their golf swing, moments before the club starts "down", the hips will start to rotate toward the target. As the good golfer rotates their torso to and through the ball, the angle between the hips and shoulders will be maintained. Years ago there was discussion of the "X" factor that is the measurement of the angular difference between the hip turn and shoulder turn at the "top" of the swing. But to me what is more important than whatever the angle is between the hips and shoulders at the "top", is the maintaining of this angle through impact. Very good golfers have their hips rotated toward the target at impact because they have been rotating their hips and shoulders as a unit, maintaining the angle between their hips and shoulders from the "top" through impact. Giving up that angle is the beginning of flipping. As the hips slow down or simply do not turn in a golfer of lesser ability, the swing becomes more of a hands swing than a full body rotation swing.
There are of course other things involved in the golf swing. But the above addresses the things David Lee discusses in this video and corrects some of the misconceptions I have read in the comments.

A long time ago, I accidentally stumbled into what would be considered a Gravity swing. The. I moved overseas and stopped playing golf. After tinkering endlessly with different concepts, I accidentally found my swing again just yesterday. I would turn up on the backswing, bump my left hip to the target, and most importantly, DO NOTHING. No conscious thought of hand or arm movement. All of a sudden, I was pounding the ball. I didn’t know why the “do nothing” concept worked, but now I have an explanation. This is so good!

This is my first time to your channel. I teach this wonderful game. I do believe we are saying the same thing. I always say I and under the right shoulder. There must be a drop to be on plane. The weight of the club head will take you up and to the left if you don't. The slice I love the balance that you teach. I also say. Swing and let the weight of the club head keep you in balance. As you say gravity. The body will always do two things. Relive pressure. And seek balance. Thanks for lesson !
You have to be willing to go off vertical and threaten your balance at the completion of the backswing. Your subconscious will sense this and will want the weight of the club and your arms (and the centrifugal force they create) to be slung in front of you. That’s when you’ll see dynamic motion and a ball moved with mass & not muscle!

I thought this may be a load of bs but I have been working on my swing since returning to golf and have found the gravity move to be the most important element of the swing. I didn't learn it from watching this video I just watched the best swingers hit the ball. I realise now I never used to swing properly and I used to play off 8 handicap. I now take a proper divot like I never have before and hit my irons far longer with better flight. If only. I am from the UK so they didn't pay me to say this.

Very interesting, i get the concept because it was well explained, i envisioned a boat puling a water skier and pulling him around a turn and whipping him around much faster. I hope that's a good analogy,

mr lee, i've had your book for about 20 yrs and for me your method works very well with the driver off a tee peg but can't get it to work off the ground. when i use it i channel in jack's image and hit it very long and solid. it's ez to learn and comprehend for my t-ball but iron shots not so much.

By the sound of it, you are struggling with some of the geometry when you are feeling where the bottom of your arc should be. Try practicing on a steep uphill slope and making sure all of your weight gets through. You can also add a walk through to those that will help you feel your weight transferring through the shot.

The concept seems to make a lot of sense. It feels quite good when I try it. It's a fussy thing. If you "over fall" that ball is going right. If you get it just right you can really smash it! I was curious if Fred Couples or Lee Trevino agrees with your explanation.

So let me say I understand your explanation of gravity golf and at age 69 have recently tried it and did hit the ball strait; however I find I do not have the mobility in my body at my current age to sustain this technique then when I was younger. If seniors wish to try your gravity golf recommendations they need to test the mobility of your swing technique by simply taking the club with both hands; lift their arms up over their head; and rotate the club around their body. They will indeed feel the forces and the counter forces that a gravity golf swing plays on their body. If they feel any discomfort what so ever they need to stop this technique for their own good. Do you agree? If you do, I would like to discuss my very simple of alternative swing ( right hand pulling left arm in backswing) using the science of physics and gravity for senior to employ without pain. My concept is simple and you may have read it else where on other another video your son made. Thank you very much.
Hi Fraser, sorry for the long delay in response. You are certainly right, that if you feel pain something needs to change. Working with gravity, means adapting to functional motion and that can take different shapes depending on the individual. The laws of motion and the intention of how you release you weight in the direction you want to go stays the same. Thanks for your comment and we would love to hear more about your research.
Gravity Golf thanks for your reply. I love exploring the golf swing and have abandoned pulling the left arm with the right hand some time ago.
I now love the concept of the Fibonacci Golden Spiral associated with the club head as it reaches center of the ball in our swinging of the club. Jack Nicklaus unknowingly demonstrated the twirling/ golden spiraling of the club head in his ‘twirl waggle’ just prior to swinging his club. I do this frequently just to feel the weight of the club head as I allow my wrist to move in a conical shape. I don’t think about it when I swing i just know it happens naturally for me
I like to feel the easy swing that Fred Couple does. And have incorporated Matt Wolf’s Elvis Pelvis dance move just before heaving my arms high while simultaneously rotating my body So yes I believe I do employ a lot of gravity golf in my current swing. Cheers and thanks again
The part in this video where you only used your right side ( right hand and arm) in the connection of your body to achieve a wonderful shot suggest to me that for the force to take place in a golf swing, you simply tell your viewers on the back swing when they initially 'heave the club' to start the action with the pulling motion of the left arm with the right hand and then relax a bit. They will then experience their body rotating and the the club going fully back. For every action there is a reaction; so the counterforce of initially letting go of the right side pulling the left side allows the left side to gear up to complete the gravitational shot that you have spoken of over the years. Please try this and you will understand why Tom Tomasello has always insisted that the left arm in an inert piece of robe in the golf swing. I believe this fact in the golf swing is either not known by many teachers or suppressed for one reason or another. What do you think??

After revisiting your gravity golf method swing; I can now envision a quarterback throwing a football with his trail elbow leading his trail hand at the top of his throw.
Heave and then at the start of my downswing; throwing the club with my trail elbow leading my trail hand; will be my only swing thought and at 72 I expect great things will happen in my game.
I will also combine Gravity Golf with what I call Jack Nicklaus 'twirl waggle' to loosen up a bit and feel the weight of the club head as it travels in its' circular path. Then for me I expect magic to really happen. Cheers

Gravity Golf Fantastic! My Boiling down Harvey Penick's Magic moves in golf to simply the activation of my trail elbow feeling it separate yet uniting the rest of my body works exceedingly well along with the concept of the quarterback throw and gravity golf counter-fall at the top of my swing.
Without any conscious effort on my part; my magic trail elbow prevent me from falling back and as you can see in this video I took yesterday you can actually see how my downswing starts even before I finish my backswing. I no longer think of the ball as it only gets in the way of my set swing path at the bottom of the arc.

Learning to utilize the routing in a natural way, where it is a side effect of the heave and the posture is the first key of setting a free flowing swing into motion. Gravity Golf will do. I believe teaching your students to utilize the trail elbow leading the trail hand to counteract the counter-fall at transition is the key to better understanding of the gravity golf system. Another words the trail elbow at transition is the one domino effect that start all the other dominos falling into sequence. Have you taught this specifically in gravity golf?
Years ago I know I saw at least one female player that was obviously using the gravity golf system with great success. I am sure there are many others. But, personally I could not do it until I discover my magic trail elbow/quarterback throw at the transitional downswing Cheers

Further to my last comment, it's important, (or I found it important), not to let the heave cause sway to the back, post on your trail leg per usual, just make sure all the backswing energy is created at the start...like the Niklaus quote...the first 7 inches! Let your arms follow the momentum of the heave!
I see this ‘gravity movement’ as a wonderful way to build speed through the hitting area, but help me understand how this passive hands movement will hold the clubface shut through heavy rough?

This literally fixed my issues,
I always had coiled muscles speaking to the ball and lost my arc many times causing me to top the ball, but now I am just relaxed muscles with long straight ball flights.

Also to help one imagine better the initial 'heaving motion of the back swing' Imagine Santa Claus heaving his bag of toys around his back and do the same in a golf back swing
Agree with you I do for the most part, but with longer shafted low loft clubs after watching Hendrik Stenson he apparently with long shafted low loft clubs, he immediately starts a very early push towards the target with his right trial foot, and the earlier you start the right trail foot push towards the target, the longer the right trail foot push lasts in time duration, because we establish a forward moving pivot with the right trail foot push, that prevents the outside in swing path, to the point that with Hendrik he is still completing his trail right foot push until after the impact zone. I understand that this allows us in the downswing to supplement gravity with force. However as also believe that any tension in the upper body during the down swing is a problem. So I see my understanding that on the Driver for example one can get more consistent results my using as much gravity as possible but to provide a forward moving pivot push off point so that we can get more consistent results and protect the lead knee and lead hip, so I also believe in gently flexing the stomach muscles as a first move in the downswing where the fullest stomach muscle flex occurs right after impact and will also protect the lead left hip and lead left knee.

If you had a camera directly over head you might see it. It is very subtle. It can be seen in hammer throw. If you watch hammer throw competition you will see them lean back to counter the weight. Proper hammer throw is identical to proper golf swing mechanics.

Having said my piece below. My swing thought is simply on the back swing pull with the right hand and on the downswing pull with the left hand. At 69 it works for me.

I have been "trying" this for about 6 months. I do the drills twice a week until sore (feel it on right hamstring, neck and shoulder). I went out and found success but then I started slicing or blocking to the right. If I just raise the club straight up over my head, turn to the right, then let the club fall my drives are 250 yds. I can't figure out why the full back swing causes the me to slice/push.
Hi Dennis, thanks for reaching out. It sounds like you are most likely running out of space to move through your shots, causing your center of gravity to move past pickup and catching the shot farther back in the arc with the blade open. You need room to have your body moving towards your target and still catch the ball in the upswing. If you are feeling sore after your practice, it is another indication that you are running out of room and it is causing you to involuntarily pull down and fight for your balance. First thing I would do is move your ball much farther forwards until it starts to go left and then slowly work the ball position back. Very important that you keep yourself back from the ball at setup so your center of gravity is back from the ball as well as your club (space between the club and ball at setup). Feel free to walk through some of your shots to see which direction you are walking. You should be able to walk straight with a fluid motion. In physics, weight x speed = crunch. Bringing 100 lbs of mass to the ball at 80 mph (swing speed) is 40% more power than 50 lbs at 100 mph. Think about that.
Sure looks a lot like Count Yogi's swing of yesteryear,but he just pushed the club straight up at the top of thebackswing and then let it fall - rather than heaving it back .Very elegant. Much like Dan does with his backswing.

jibboom2112 It means Mass × Speed = Power. If you reduce the Mass, you can technically have a higher Speed and still not have the same amount of power.
Force = Mass x Acceleration-squared

I've swung this way with good results. But I question that golfers employing this technique are really counter falling to the "edge of their safety envelope", as David puts it. My perception is the golfer has to offset the weight of the accelerating arms in front of him/her by leaning back a bit to balance the total center of gravity change (the lead arm and club are straight lined at impact, which won't result in a successful ball strike unless the golfer accomplishes this), but I don't see anywhere near the "edge of a safety envelope", beyond which the golfer would fall initiating the downswing. I could be wrong, but in my experience and observations, it's much more subtle and perhaps complex than this. Ah, isn't the subconscious mind amazing?
If your swinging arms, which are actually fairly heavy, and the club, were suddenly severed from your body at that point of the swing, you would indeed fall on your back. You ever have your heel slip on wet grass while kicking a football? Same thing!
I think of it as running out of energy at the top, a stall and then I start applying speed coming down...that stall at the top is where I'm hoping I'm getting some lag and swallowing the club..

I can feel it good on the practice swing. Then, I snap hook when I drive the ball.
Work on putting the ball farther forwards in your stance and walk through your shots.

Surely this counterfall onto the heels may encourage you to toe the ball at impact?
+David Neilson not so much, although it is better to hit it slightly towards the toe than the heel. If you were walking backwards towards your target and then turned so you were facing your target and continuing to walk closer towards it, your body naturally moves you the right amount into the counterfall so you can maintain direction and momentum.

I sure wish Tiger would come see you guys. Although I'm not a fan of his life choices, he was a heck of a lot of fun to watch and could save the damage he's doing to his body with the "muscle" swing. Thanks to you guys for helping me along the path. With every session on the practice range and every round, I'm feeling that effortless power even more. Can't wait to get to the course!

How about backing out of the swing, just like Kutcher? That’s when he got “really” good. That’s not complicated.
How does this relate to centripetal force?
When the body is falling (the same way we walk) it is creating kinetic energy in the direction it is going. The shoulders then begin to also fall, dropping the arms and club. After this brief sequence the body is free to turn and will sling the arms around the body at a very high efficiency level.

Muscular skeletal alignment and repeditive movement without proper maintenance on the body can cause any number of issues to muscles or joints. Dynamic functional balance is the key to a healthy golf swing and life...
Also Steve Elkington hit two absolutely awful pull hook drives at the PGA, how can you explain that
If your mass is not moving forwards and you are jammed from moving through your shot, it will trigger a chain reaction.

Its one of those 'you know its right, but can't do it' things for me. I can't keep my arms passive after 35 years of not doing so.
It absolutely has to be trained into you. The hit instinct (flexing of the arms and upper body) has to be turned off. Doing the drills will train the hit instinct away and the passive upper body in!
If Phil Michelson was a gravity player then why do his drives have a large dispersion rating
He is a right handed player that is playing left handed. When you turn over your in dominant leg it doesn't typically hold your weight as well as if can from the other side. Anatomy and physiology.
I use a swing based on physics. ( equal and opposite forces). I try to swing away from the center. Slight weight to the front foot.
Then, swing off of back foot , again swinging the club away the center . Then, momentum takes me to a normal finish. The key is the" slight “ weight shift. Don’t believe me, look at Hogan’s swing.
If this swing is so "effortless", why did Couples/Goosen and others end up with major back issues?
+zoots15 No one is exempt from genetics or life style habits that can lead to back problems. Each of them will tell you though if you ask them, that their golf swing doesn't hurt their back.
+zoots15 If their golf swing is the cause of their back problems, how can couples keep playing up to now and not keep destroying his back? If his golf swing was the cause then his golf game should keep deteriorating because of all the damage that he is supposedly doing with his golf swing.
phil makegs You should take another look, there is no way to eliminate hip rotation in the swing...there would literally be no power. If you are moving them out of sync, you can internalize leverage that can sheer the spine. That is why it is so important to make sure your mass is releasing in the same direction throughout the swing. Imagine what happens when you take a step you didn't intend, you trip and have to fight for balance, it works the same way. Also if you want to understand more about how things can get out of alignment in the body and cause pain, look up muscular skeletal realignment or the Egoscue method and it will help clarify your understanding of how those type of things can happen through daily life.
phil makegs You are leaving out an enormous amount of variables, Tiger's swing created a much larger amount of internalized leverage than Freddie's Goosen's Etc.
The hip rotation has to fit the natural flexibility of the individual, but you *must get yourself falling in the right direction at the right time to free up the turn (the body is exceptionally weak rotationaly. Imagine trying to walk without moving your legs or turning your hips. Any Dr. will tell you making, one move on one side of the body over time is not good for you and that your body will begin to compensate, this is why proper excercise is very important to keep the body in balanced alignment.
So I guess that JDay(28 yrs old) Rory(27) Rose, Fowler(27), Woods, Daleat( back surgery at 29) et al having back issues in the past/present is genetics/lifestyle as well, and has nothing to do with their golf swings. Nothing against gravity golf, It looks like a perfectly legitimate way to perform the golf swing. But to claim that Fred, Retief and others were/are using this swing is anecdotal at best. Looking at Retiefs old swings it appears to be more X factor than gravity golf. Thats what broke his back and many other golfers trying to twist the upper body against a stable limited hip turn lower body. To suggest that swinging a golf club in this manner over a million times had nothing to do with their broken backs and that it's just genetics is an assumption, unless you are privy to their medical records. My assertion that their swings caused their back issues is also an assumption, but history shows it continues to happen to many PGA pros and afflicts many amateur golfers as well. Usually the simplest explanation is the correct one (Occam's razor)

This guy is confused. The gravity without arms directing the club towards the ball, would cause the club to fall behind the body not in front.
I can do the opposite, fall towards the ball in transition and let the lower body pivot neutralise the forward falling which slings the arms off my chest.
As long as you’re falling to your hamstrings. If you load your quads, your ability to rotate your core will be greatly compromised and you will not be in harmony with gravity, which will require the addition of muscle during the downswing.
If mass was the pure key to distance then Jamie Sadlowski wouldn’t have won two World Long Drive championships and the guys in the world long drive wouldn’t be so strong. Other things that are questionable are why does Rory hit the ball way farther and more accurately than Michelson, Jordan and Bubba now despite Rory being way shorter and lighter than them
Hi Billy, putting an eye on which players are creating the greatest amount of smash factor is what you are looking for as far as power goes. It is very easy to turn strength back in on the body if you are not moving in the right direction, properly sequenced and at the right pace. Those are the things that create consistency and efficiency.

by the time you perfect this swing, you're too old to do it. I've never seen Nicklaus stop a swing, so apparently he likes to hit a lot of not so good shots, because he knows they're coming.
Let's see your swing, I'll put it up against my swing or any of our students (including beginners) and see how it stands up. Nicklaus, like every other golfer, is far from perfect and is something that as a golfer, has to be accepted with humility. When you're committed to making a swing, it's time to go. I'd say he did ok even with a few bad shots here and there. ~ Daniel
Gravity Golf I guess I'm just "Defying Gravity" as Stephan Schwartz would say.
That doesn't mean it has no merit. certainly as much as the "rotary swing", the "one plane"
swing or "two plane swing" or "square to square swing" or "Moe Norman swing" ad infinitum. Everyone's got a method. Good luck to you and your students.
