I would love to see your numbers from this test while using the narrow reflectors! Really interested in what the (higher) preferred mounting height would be with those attached, for those of us who want lights mounted farther away from the tank. The narrow reflectors greatly help prevent light spill, but certainly the height/spacing would need to be different to avoid the hot spots.

I think BRS pioneered the "not so evenly spaced led lights". But they do it with numbers and data to prove why rather than anecdotal evidence. You guys do awesome research for the reefing community! Thank you for your very informative videos!

Thank you for this detailed video. Very informative. The only additional piece of info I need is length of time per day to have the light on and light wave intensity ramping up and down time.
You're right, I think I missed sharing that in this one. However, our recommendation is basically the same for each lighting option which is; 9hr peak photo period with 30min ramp up/down. Anyone can tweak that to fit their own needs and desires, but that has been a solid starting point for many of us here at BRS. :)
We usually run our lights for 10-12 hours per day total with one hour of ramp up and one hour of ramp down at the beginning and end. The 8-10 hours in the middle we run at a steady intensity.

For me, it looks like the AP700, mounted from front to back, will be better than a360x in the middle. Thanks for doing the work.

BRS I UNDERSTOOD! Thanks for that, however, is it only applied during peak hours ? Will I need to cut the Uv and red by half when the tank starts and ends? Please advise
I am wondering if you can post the actual Spectral Controller X daily schedule you use for the SPS? I have 6x of them over my tank, love them, but I am not sure if I have them scheduled appropriately (ramp up, peak, down, how long, etc). I can't find anywhere a solid template for what is known to produce results.
I was wondering that myself. Don't know if you just adjust the intensity and keep the spectrum at 20 white 20 red uv 100. ????
I agree, our lighting schedule recommendation was missing from this one. However all of our recommendations for photoperiod follow the same structure that you can tweak for your own personal desires; which is a 9hr peak photoperiod with a 30min ramp up/down time. That's it. If you want to change spectrum in those 30min ramps you certainly can, or even decrease/increase the peak period, but we believe this is a great starting point coupled with the recommendations we gave for spacing, height and intensity.

We run most of our fixtures with one hour of ramp up, steady intensity for 8-10 hours, then 1 hour of ramp down. Ideal intensity will depend on your particular tank dimensions and corals that you're keeping.
@@BRStv interesting i see alot of guys on R2R saying they recommend 14 or 15 hours for the kessils which i find thats ALOT.

I just wanted to thank you for this video and all of your videos for that matter. You have taken a lot of the mystery out of lighting by performing tests that we at home could never do (at least most of us). I have two Kessil A360WEs I have used for years. I added the Aquatic Life 36" fixture to them. Still, I was not getting the overall success I was looking for. I ended up getting a deal on 2 Kessil 360X lights. I took the A360WEs off and replaced with the 360Xs thinking I would use the old ones as back ups in case something went wrong with the new lights. I still wasn't getting what I needed to support the corals I wanted, so I just thought I would keep a LPS/Softie tank nothing wrong with that. It wasn't until I watched this video, that I decided to add the two Kessil A360WEs to the Aquatic Life fixture. Now I am running a total of 4 Kessil lights along with the Aquatic Life fixture, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! I now have the confidence that I can grow any type of coral and lighting will not be the reason for not being successful. Thanks guys!

Great Resource! From these numbers, with a mixed reef in a Red Sea 170, would 6" to 7" above the water be optimal if I had a few SPS corals in that warm spot?

Really love the look of kessil lights but if I was going to start a 4ft sps reef tank unless I was totally in love with the shimmer i would be crazy to pick these over hydra 64s or radions from a value point of view ! I Wish these where priced closer to the other 90w fixtures.
Can I mount this Kessil into my 32 gallon biocube lid? I like having the lid but will the light be too close to the water?

You mention the mounting height but what depth are you taking your par measurements?
6", 12", and 18" depending on which point in the video you're talking about. For example, we list all par measurements for the three depths towards the end of the video like the 12:42 min mark.
Can you recommend a full 12 hour light schedule with t5 hybrid? Tank is a 24 inch cube mostly sps towards the top and lps towards the bottom.
Check out this video. While this test was done with Kessil's A360WE models, we expect the intensity numbers to be largely unchanged.

Sorry to hear about the bubble algae. If you're not having any luck getting rid of it, you may want to consider checking out a product called Vibrant. Vibrant has worked wonders in getting the bubble algae out of our tanks around the office.
I have a 6ft tank. What are your thoughts on using percentage spacing an how close that would be for at least the total distribution? i.e. based on percent spacing for your 4ft recommendation, spacing of 4 over a 6ft would be 12" and 25.8" from both sides. Any idea how many lights your'd recommend over a 6ft for comparable par - 5 or even 6?
Your math on spacing seems to check out. The number of lights will really depend on the types of corals you're trying to keep. Over a 6' tank, 6 fixtures will for sure do the trick for an SPS dominant system. You may even be able to get by with 5 if you alter the spacing a bit. If you're keeping LPS and softies, that many fixtures isn't necessary.
Any way of showing 3 lights on the 4ft tank? for a mix if sps / lps
We don't have plans to test this right now as we've now moved onto other lights. That said, we do offer par meters for rent on the website where you could very easily replicate this test with fewer or more fixtures and ad different settings as you see fit.
Hello! Would you be able to suggest spacing for two 360X over a 3 ft tank?
I have 54g corner tank and mine are 5 inches above the tank 8 inches apart. Growing even my most demanding maxima clams and Acro's

Spacing yes, but you may have to turn down the intensity. It all depends on your par goals of course. We usually shoot for about 75-150 par for softies and LPS and then 250-350 par for SPS

We typically suggest about one A360X per foot of tank length for SPS, so three of them should do the trick for your tank.
I have a standard 29 gallon aquarium and I was wondering if it would be enough? Mostly doing low demand sps,like green digi and Bali green slimer. Stuff like that (was even thinking a birds nest of some sort

The A360X does best over a max area of 24", usually ~18" for SPS. For that reason, we wouldn't recommend using just one over your 29 gallon.
What about a shallow (16") 30x24 mixed reef (mostly softies) tank? Can I get away with 1?

Check out this video. While it's with the older A360WE fixture, there really isn't a huge intensity difference between the A360WE and A360X from what we've seen.

How many of these lights do you guys recommend for 3 ft long 2 ft high and 1ft wide tank ??
The Kessil A360X fixtures do best over a 24" area, so you'd likely be looking at two fixtures. Given the tank dimensions, if you're keeping LPS and softies, you could even size down to the A160 fixtures and do two of those instead.
What would be the spacing on the lights for a Red Sea reefer S 1000 which is 82.7 inches long and 26 inches wide 26 inches deep and can you give me the par numbers for this tank

We haven't gotten our hands on that fixture yet. We'll have to wait and see :)
I know there are people who love Kessil lights, but I feel they went the wrong direction with these, with the A360 it was a nice midrange priced choice for lighting an aquarium, but with the A360x the price range leap-frogged just about every other 90-100W fixture, making more expensive than the Radion fixture at that power point. Now I know they crank out more PAR from this over the prior version, but still for LEDs which recent generations have ended up being so strong most people will not be anywhere close to that 100% intensity, it seemed like the wrong decision to make.
Fair enough. Part of the reason we do these videos is so that we not only teach our viewers on how to set up their lights for success, but also to help when deciding between different brands. It sounds like you've decided that the XR15's may be a better value for your own particular setup and that's great :)
@@BRStv Well I like having options, and I like having options at different price points, but more importantly more options just under "the highest" price point, which effectively was Ecotech. The 360 was in the same price point as the Hydra 32HD (or older 26HD that is), now Kessil jumped up to the Ecotech price range, which left less options at lower ranges.
Hey @BRS is this fixture quite under high light intensity?
The A360X does have a fan (which is slightly audible in a silent room), but overall is just as quiet as other quality 90w LED fixtures.
What would you recommend for a 60x24x 40 240 gallon? I plan on supplementing with reefbrites blue Cho...
If you're going SPS dominant, we'd suggest one A360X per foot of tank length. If going LPS dominant, you won't need quite as many fixtures.

Unfortunately, we didn't get to test on a tank of this size. The good news is that you can easily replicate our par tests by renting out or purchasing a par meter. If we had to guess, you'll likely be running your lights at 100% given the 30" depth of the tank. The depth from front to back is likely going to be your biggest challenge. These fixtures really do best over a max area of 24" x 24", so you're probably looking at two rows of fixtures, one row in the front, and another in the back. 6 fixtures should definitely do the job for an LPS dominant tank of this size.

At 100% intensity, it would almost certainly be too powerful, but you're correct, you can simply turn down the intensity dial if needed.
It is never mentioned what depth these reading were taken. Are these reading at the bottom of the tank, half way down or at the top?

We haven't tested on a 3' tank, but if you use the data from the 4' tank with two lights, I would place each A360X approximately 10" from each end of the tank with about 16" between the two lights.
I'm going to expect that the a360we will have an over all simular out come. I'm running 4 of them on a 90 Gallon mixed reef tank and the coverage is great. Looking at these numbers I am thinking I'll have to raise them up a little to get a bit better coverage. Are you planning on updating any of the older light information videos like the a360we?
It's not super high up on the priority list right now, but I'd agree with you that the suggestions for intensity, mounting height, and spacing would remain roughly the same. When we initially compared the two lights, there really wasn't a ton of difference.
How come you don’t mention using 2x A360X to raise PAR over the 24” cube, instead of using a totally different light fixture, i.e., the AP700?
Two A360X fixtures is absolutely a viable option. Just a little less sleek of a form factor than a single fixture.
What about a standard 55 gallon 48x13? Would the placement be the same as the 48x24
Yep, spacing from the edges would be the same. Your PAR map might look a little different vs our 24" wide tank due to different angles of reflection in the glass due to the tank dimensions.

So I take it that my 360X being 30" off the water of my 7 gallon cube 12' sq, is too high, I only have LPS though.

Is the PAR on those 4 kessils at %100 intensity?
It depends on the goals you are trying to achieve in the tank. For our testing purposes in this 4ft tank, in order to achieve those 200-350 PAR numbers our intensity was 100% using our BRS spectrum ratio mix. This might change as you change the spectrum ratio mix, but if you were using the one we shared in the video, you should expect similar results.

In that case, I would suggest using two smaller lights to get better spread. If you wanted to stick with Kessil, two of their A160's would be a great choice.

Nah, nobody has 3ft tanks.

Unfortunately, we didn't test on a 3' tank. We do have limited resources in terms of both time and money, so we can't test on every tank size. For that reason, we decided to pick the two most common sizes in a 24" and 48" long tank. If you have questions about your particular tank, you can always make an educated guess based on the data here, or rent a par meter and replicate this test on your own system.

What would recommend for spacing over a 36x24 tank?
Following the same process of spacing testing as we did for the 48" tank, if you divide the tank up evenly the spacing would be at 12"inches from the left and right edges for two lights. I would expect that much like our 48"inch tank test, this would create a hot spot in the center and cooler outer edges, so you might find that optimal spacing would have you space them further apart from each other. In order to know for sure which spacing is the best, we highly recommend borrowing or renting a PAR meter to know for sure.
no wonder why some of my sps keep bleaching. no matter how tall i put them on the rock. Im really disappointed I thought it would be able to grow SPS. I bought this light because I love Kessil and I use them on all of my Planted tanks. Iv seen the other lights and I dont like how they look plus my OCD will kick in if thinks dont match. Mine is on the IM Nuvo 40 which is probally the same as your 60Gallon cube.
At 8in above the water you're going to have so much light bleeding into your room.

I just raised mine to 8 inches and my living room was way to flooded by the light. Back to 4. 1/2 inch for me and dialing the light settings down accordingly.

I'm sure you do these videos based on what items sell the most to help the most people but I'd really appreciate a video like this with the Red Sea ReefLED 50. I recently picked up 2 from you guys as it seemed like the best compromise of features without maybe being the best at any one thing. I'm guessing that they provide similar light to the AI Primes but I'd be forever grateful if you could look into them.
Alex G. They have a video on the 90’s. I too bought a pair of 50’s for my mixed reef tank and I’m pleased so far. Getting good growth and extension even with the small SPS frags. Giving the lower PAR and wattage compared to the 90 I’ve placed SPS closer to the surface to give them the most light possible from the smaller lights. I’m managing so far without reintroducing the old T5’s these lights replaced.

Alex G. 46x14x24. Rather unconventional for a reef tank but it works. I have some SPS in the top half which are showing good growth and plenty of softies, lps, zoas and nems throughout the tank thriving under the 50’s. Even the corals on the sand bed are doing well under a lower powered light 24” deep. If I notice any struggling I’ll supplement with some T5’s but so far so good
While we'd love to hit every light brand and size out there, we unfortunately do have limited resources in terms of time. Maybe we'll circle back to the ReefLED fixtures once some of the scheduled testing is done.

We're testing them as fast as we can get them on tanks. Lol! The new XR15s are coming shortly.
