This film appears to have it all; • Subverted existing property (yes since it was 're-imagined' in the 90's) to help create-normalise those NEW (and self-serving) deliberately-lessened 'realities'. • Please identify/sympathise with yet another villain and victim (of her own self serving self mostly). • If you do identify and feel sympathy-sorry for the 'mean-ness' inflicted on our character then YOU too might be a victim......you go girl!! • Morality?....what morality, if you're a victim over-led by emotion you can also then self-justify pretty much ANYTHING to your own self-serving self (and FOR your manipulators like a good useful idiot). • witches (speaks for itself.....like the stirring Macbeth witches or the ones on The View).
I wish other movies could get faithful adaptations like this. Say what you will about Wicked, I certainly won’t be seeing it, but they are appealing to their fans successfully.
Chris thinks this is not part of the current ideo-tardation and lessening initiative.......as if the initiative only started a few years ago. Folks have proven to be slow in waking up to their deliberate and shameless manipulation (if they ever do).
That’s not the point at all. The Wizard is the real villain, it’s about how people can be misjudged when they are not at all evil. She is a Jesus type character.
Yeah, Wicked is not the first story to do the sympathetic villain thing. The trope's been around for centuries. Maybe since Paradise Lost (1667) where Satan is portrayed as a tragic figure. Probably even before that.
Chris, I can't tell if you're talking about the play or the movie. Yes the play is good, but is the movie any good? Does the movie respect the source material - the play?
Before the crappy prequels were made, Vader was ace, and his fall and redemption meant something. Vader chose the dark side because he wanted to. The shyquels made it so he was ricked, a dope, a dupe, and easily manipulated, his redemption was tainted and worthless.

In this movie, the witch is not Trump. I can see how you guys would think that, though, looking at it from a certain perspective. But in the eyes of Hollywood, you know darned well who the "systemically" targeted folks are and that is exactly why the lead role had to be cast the way it was. This is so transparent. I hope folks see this for what it is and say NO, but if it's a well-made film (which it sounds like it is), families are going to make this a hit. Oh well.
In the play that came out in 2005ish, the Wizard was a stand in for George W. Bush, with Madame Morrible being his “press secretary” and the wicked witch representing the poor t3rrorists that were being othered and used as an enemy to unite the country post Nine Eleven.
No interest in watching this at all regardless of any of the complaints people have about the cast, but that synopsis turns me off even more and the "it's not a trope" excuse doesnt hold water. It's a trope, it's been done countless times in countless films by now, I don't care about the stage production.
Let's be honest this is going to be the film event of the year and likely go on to win awards because enough people are fans of the play, and aren't really aware of the culture war stuff.

To be fair having 45 plus yr old women acting as teenagers is less convincing than these guys (who are still too old)
@cuteanimalseverywhere7620 still would have been better then this
I'm reminded of Norm MacDonald's review of 'Interview with the Vampire'....."Not Gay Enough".
Sorry guys. It may be wonderful in many ways. If it is woke, I will not watch it, and I personally find it immoral to support it. There is propaganda I can stand. Not so with Wokeism…and I love John Waters. He has nothing to do with this.
Chris, I remember the play from years ago and I actually liked it as a conservative male BUT... if I watched this movie today, I probably couldn't stand it now knowing what's happening today with politics. Rewatching old stuff, I notice it more now than I ever did. Ohhhh well!
Lesbian witches is big popular this year mostly on Disney
I will never support any amount of woke. Ever
Stop with all these perverse idea to humanize villains from Movies and TV. They are villains who lost the humanity for their evil ambitions.
dont like too gay movies. they are always cringe and wrong
This film appears to have it all;
• Subverted existing property (yes since it was 're-imagined' in the 90's) to help create-normalise those NEW (and self-serving) deliberately-lessened 'realities'.
Social engineering
11:30 Bruh! it's pushing propaganda so hard they broke the bank on it.
Only movie to get my money this year was Deadpool and Wolverine.
Not giving my money or time to people who hate me.
"Insane...."
"Insaaaaaaaane....."
YAS, YASS, QUEEEEEEEEENNNNN
I think after you watch Wicked, you should watch a Chuck Norris movie to return your T-levels to baseline.
I will say that I'm going to have to start a beverage game every time either of you say "I will say" lol.
Gary loved the movie.
You didn't mention that this has nothing to do with the original books.
It's written by a dude who hated the original.
Normalizing evil is cool.
That’s not the point at all. The Wizard is the real villain, it’s about how people can be misjudged when they are not at all evil. She is a Jesus type character.
Hollywood is so screwed
Yeah, Wicked is not the first story to do the sympathetic villain thing. The trope's been around for centuries. Maybe since Paradise Lost (1667) where Satan is portrayed as a tragic figure. Probably even before that.
Chris, I can't tell if you're talking about the play or the movie. Yes the play is good, but is the movie any good? Does the movie respect the source material - the play?
I can't wait for Elphaba to say "In the end, they're not coming after me. They're coming after you - and I'm just standing in their way,"
Before the crappy prequels were made, Vader was ace, and his fall and redemption meant something. Vader chose the dark side because he wanted to. The shyquels made it so he was ricked, a dope, a dupe, and easily manipulated, his redemption was tainted and worthless.
i dont remember he having a good side back when i watched the wizard of oz. i seem to remember he trying to kill whats her nuts, enslaving towns and then the flying death monkeys...yeah....just misunderstood....BWAHAHAHAHA
You don't understand. She was teased at school. Just like the Nashville shooter. Have a heart.
Thanks for the review. My wife and I really love the play and want to see the movie but have grown weary of the message being shoved down our throat in everything. Your review will definitely help to know if we should see it or not 👍
I’m taking my partner to see Wicked as a surprise so what I gather is she will love it, but I will most definitely hate it. Figured as much. Thanks for the confirmation.
I'm going to agree with the Rogue One/Andor critics' argument here and say why would I want to watch this? I already know what happens to the main character.
The witch portrayal is based on European folklore. Would they cast a vvh1te woman as a voodoo priestess?
Every movie contract for actors should come with a STFU clause
I like musicals from the 1970s and back. It seems like up to this day all the songs sound like Jesus Megachurch music.
For as much as I hate supporting these people I know my daughter will love this.
Don't contribute and let her get brainwashed
My kid would love to watch Family Guy while eating a giant bowl of Froot Loops, but I keep him away for his own good.
"I will say this..."
I have no plans to see it and I never was the type of person the is made for, I don’t know why everyone is so upset that you guys liked it. Your job is to be honest if a movie was good to you or not. We actually have people who this wasn’t meant for crying about them not wanting to see it
In this movie, the witch is not Trump.
At first I thought you were from New Jersey and were trying to express how wicked early you got to review a film...
Sounds like a total sausage fest!
Sounds like a pass to me
No interest in watching this at all regardless of any of the complaints people have about the cast, but that synopsis turns me off even more and the "it's not a trope" excuse doesnt hold water. It's a trope, it's been done countless times in countless films by now, I don't care about the stage production.
You expected Bowen Yang to play anything other than gay? I mean c'mon he's the gay friend and that's all he can do!
And I thought it is a movie about that ewok from RETURN OF THE JEDI.
So this story is to blame for all the humanizing of villains.
Let's be honest this is going to be the film event of the year and likely go on to win awards because enough people are fans of the play, and aren't really aware of the culture war stuff.
Looks like woke garbage 🗑 to me.
