When you pair this with an SSL Channel Strip, which do you place first in the chain… Also, you mentioned an LA2A and 1176 too. How does that chain look? In my mind LA2A to 1176 to channel strip to vocal strip, but I’m curious how you’d arrange them
If I were to also add a channel strip with this I would have the channel strip first in the chain. If I were to use an 1176 and LA2A with this and a channel strip. It might mean that the entire vocal track needs to be re recorded but the order I would use those plugins in would be channel strip, vocal strip, 1176, la2a. I would first try to do as much as I could with just the vocal strip plugin though. If I thought that I still needed more it would depend on what was needed to decide what I would add next. I typically like to do ssl channel strip with little to no compression but maybe some gating if necessary, then if more eq was needed after the ssl, I would use a parametric eq like the Waves REQ6 or Pro Tools 7 band eq. Then I would go into an 1176 compressor and if I wanted the vocal to come out even more I would add an LA2A at the end just doing like 2-3db of gain reduction with it. If the vocal needs a de esser then I would likely add it before the compression and sometimes you might need to add another one after. The vocal strip should take some of those steps out of the process like the channel strip and maybe some of the compression. Also the de-essing. It’s just another tool to try out and sometimes it may work, other times it might not.

what is the difference between a compressor and a compander?
A compressor will reduce dynamic range. A compander can reduce and as an expander, expand dynamic range of the audio.
It is just meant Compressor + Expander . Because it is same in basically :)
