The AT app on the phone is quite useful, real time boards on the stop, and shows the route it takes

I was a tourist there for a week and used the hop card to get around. The one thing I found strange was that the bus stop was sometimes 500 m or more away from major destinations. Like the bus stop to the transport museum (motat) was 500 m away. And a school I visited, the closest bus stop was a kilometre away. Just found that odd.

there's a bus stop on Great South Road 135m from the main entrance to MOTAT one way, 200m the other way (10% of which is just crossing the road). MOTAT2 (aviation hall) is at the far end of a cul-de-sac so it can't have a bus service - but MOTAT runs it own free tram between the two - which calls at the zoo on the way.

*Make as many transfers as you like between buses, trains and ferries. Just make sure you tag on within 30 minutes of tagging off your previous service and complete this journey within four hours*
30 mins , I hope the bus does not run late for a transfer.
In Hawaii the bus has a 2hr 30min transfer window , very generous, that came in very handy when we holiday there 🌺
Here in Sydney I have no idea what the transfer window is because I never use the bus.
Wow that is a short transfer window indeed! I hope the Auckland bus network has improved and is more reliable now
@@brittanymorgan09 the 30-min change is pretty easy across most of Auckland as most bus services run more often than that. 30 mins means that you're continuing to make one trip, as opposed to Hawaii's 2h30 which would enable you to do other things in between buses - not a 'single trip'. Hawaii's is very generous, and lets a huge number of utility trips be made with a 'free return leg' which would be great in Auckland too. That said, I did once make a 'single trip' to the DIY store using five buses including shopping time. It was two buses each way for the journey, and I spent just 20 minutes in the shop getting what I needed. I took one extra bus deliberately to keep within the 30 mins window, just from one stop to the next!

Hi there! My dad is 70yo and traveling alone. We advice him to get the hop card at the airport. Now my question is, can he reload the card in the nearest train station? He doesn’t know how to use the app. Thanks for answering my question.

New Subscriber here. My daughters and I will be coming to Auckland next month for the World Cup. I have an AT HOP account set up. I have an option to purchase a hop card through the app & have it emailed to me, will I then be able use that print out on buses or will I use that to receive a physical card once I’m in Auckland? Hello! That will be an amazing trip, I'm excited for you! I thought you could have the AT card mailed to you but if not and it'll just be emailed, I imagine you'll have to pick one up in Auckland once you get there. The AT network has machines you have to tap the card on and off of and a print out won't work as far as I know.

@@shawnstanford5230 I'm so glad it helped! Worst case scenario, you can just get another card at a suprette/dairy once you get there. You can also pay for others if they don't have a card or lose theirs, just let the bus driver know when you board.

I ask you. If you have to make a combination between bus and train, when you get off the bus do you swipe the card, and when you get on and off the train do you swipe them again? I mean, do you swipe the card 4 times?
or only when you get on the bus and get off the train, 2 times?

Hello! As far as I know, you have to tag on and tag off on every bus & train. It might not charge you extra if it's a transfer in a certain timeframe though.
you have to tag on and off each bus. There are no tag machines on each train nor on each ferry so you have to tag into and out of each railway station; or on the dockside as you board each ferry (except in the city centre terminal that's like a big station with a gate-line where you tag for all boats). If you don't tag off from a bus or as you leave a railway station then it can't tell how far you've travelled so can't charge the right fare - and will assume that you're going all the way! HOP links your rides as you tag off and back on again inside 30 mins, and calls it a single trip after the fifth leg - or if you are 'tagged off' for 30 mins. They charge fares according to how many zones you've travelled through, so getting off one bus and on to another (or on to a train or ferry) you only pay for travel within that zone once. Example - ride a bus from say Royal Oak into the city centre, you'll pay for the isthmus zone and the city centre zone. Change to a bus going over the bridge to the North Shore, and get off anywhere up to Constellation, and you'll only pay for the extra zone at the bottom of the North Shore because you've already paid for the city centre zone when you rode into town. Carry on through to Albany and that's an additional zone. If instead of that bus over the bridge you had changed to a train on the Eastern Line and gone to Meadowbank, and there would be no extra charge as you've already paid for the Isthmus zone on your bus ride. Same thing happens if you had changed in the city for a bus along to Mission Bay or up to Ponsonby Road - no extra charge.
From nz public transport cheap but schedules so unreliable my local bus on time rating 52% I've seen up to 90 minute delays 15 minute delays are common

Yes you can! But the fare is more. And I don't think you get any change so it must be exact.
Edit March 16: I hope you made out okay, I just found out buses don't accept cash, just the ferry and train. Sorry about that!

@@brittanymorgan09 - sorry, there have been no cash fares on Auckland buses since Covid in 2020. The 'cash fare' price still exists, but you can only pay it if you're travelling with someone who doesn't have a HOP card: you can pay the driver using credit from your own card to buy them a ticket at the cash rate. Far better (and cheaper) for each traveller to have their own card. I think you can only buy ferry tickets for cash, now, and only in the city. All public transport is on HOP because it's much quicker to load people if each one isn't stopping to pay a fare; and sadly because too many bus drivers were being assaulted to steal their cash boxes :(
