Looked like fun....😊
Hi Simon, the mystery "sword" seems to be a "machete". Great video!! Thank you and crew so much!! 🙏💗
Looks really good. The ww2 helmet can only be accurately dated by a date next to the chin strap anchors

Was there no fish in it ?
In 1971,they shut off Niagara Falls,my father worked for the power company. It was the most epic mudlark ever! Was only 10 years old, but still have some of things I found. There was so much history, wish it could happen again.
I remember that! It was all over the papers and I lived in Scarborough then. Lucky you!
Yes I knew I I watched something about that because I had the BIGGEST fallout with a good friend of mine and she was adamant YOU CAN NOT TURN OFF THE FALLS. Can't wait to show what you said. Thank you.
@@pod9538 I grew up in Tonawanda,I may b mistaken, but it seems to me that it was shut off again sometime after that.could b wrong bout that one,I was young,it wasn't public knowledge about negative effects?
What did you find?
What did you find? 🙌🏼👂🏼 If you don’t mind me asking?🤷🏻♀️ I just watched a documentary about that...I live in Port Perry, Ont....TIA for a reply(not necessary if you don’t feel like it!) Just very curious😂 God Bless🙏🏼🍀👋🏼🇨🇦
It’s always nice to spend time with convivial people who are enjoying themselves doing good things and enjoying themselves.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Its a pity all that mud can't be removed and sieved through. Imagine what's buried beneath it all.
My guess is the mud is contaminated beyond belief, lots of heavy metals. It would be nice to get it down to the bottom and hose down what's left then move onto the next section.
I've seen vids by someone else and the canals he tromps through in Birmingham are littered with debris. It is a disgrace so I stopped watching them even though I'm originally from there.
I was wondering whether the Canals and river trust would be dredging/digging out the mud as it is drained, it would be a shame not too.
It will be dredged it's just easier to do with the water in because the machines are on boats and the silt is floated away on butties.
@@rogerdickinson920 We owe it to the environment to clean these canals up. We can find billions of pounds for vanity projects but never enough to clean up our mess.
@@whitecompany18 I'm not so sure. It is contaminated waste and is very expensive to dispose of. They often just leave it.
Reminds me of when I took part in draining a lock in the North West of England to give it a clean. We found an intact Viking boat at the bottom. Surprised we were!
bolox !
Course you did. Then you woke up.
I drained my sinuses once and found the Titanic!
Some of you need to switch off your computers and get a life.
Must be a typo. Bet he meant "hiking boot"
Thank you all for the great service, the canal needed it ! No trolleys found? Nice to see everyone having such a lovely day out--and for Brian's musical accompaniment x
No I only saw one. Be sure to tell the trolley museum for me 😉👍🏻🐾🧡
@@Sifinds lol
What fun, and a great cause! Thanks for taking us along:)
Thanks Mudlover! 👍🏻👣🧡
I remember as a child I saw something on TV about a canal being drained, and was fascinated about what they found in there. I think this is when my interest was ignited!
Cool
That bell was the best find! What a wonderful noise it made 👌
What an incredible experience Simon! Thanks for taking us along!

Amazing story about the "Leggers" Can you imagine the labor of this? That little heart pot is a sweet find. I cannot imagine how stiff and sore everyone was after a day of floundering in the deep mud.
If you go to the 'Black Country Museum' near Birmingham, you can have a go at legging through a canal tunnel there!
I can confirm it is hard graft. I was knackered after a few yards from being in such an unnatural position.
Fabulous job! I teach SCUBA and I teach each student to bring back at least 5 items of trash (or as much as they can safely carry) on each dive. Excellent!
Fantastic to hear!
Thats a brilliant idea.We will know things are even worse than we thought when face masks are found in amongest the space debris that is being collected for burn up in earths atmosphere
Nice treasures and such a benefit to the environment. Good job. Well done.
Nice and benevolent thought to be inculcated in kids. Appreciate it.
What a great project and opportunity for communities to come together and make a difference in their shared space!
Great video Simon. What a fun day. So great to see you all.
Thanks Nic! Can’t wait for the next outing 👍🏻🐾🧡
I can't wait for the next video guys
It's all good stuff innit .
Missing you, Nic. You must be busy with other things.
@@carolinewithers1647 thank you Caroline, yes just taking a little holiday. I will be back soon x
Hey, Si. If you want information on that helmet, it's a early WWII Brodie, probably 1938 pattern. Later ones got rid of the leather for a webbing. A very unique find, especially when 85% of the helmets were left on Dunkirk. Only a small portion of those helmets really exist in modern times. From the look, as well, it may have been modified with a new-ish chin strap. Nevertheless, very good find.
Wicked thanks
Yeah, I thought WW2 as well, but I wondered whether it was an ARP Warden's helmet. What colour was it painted?
So many interesting finds! I particularly liked the bird cage.
Thank’s Dave!
I am very impressed with the generosity and cheery attitude of all those volunteers! Some looked like they were putting their lives on the line for the cause. Haha. There were some well deserved good finds too. I always enjoy your vids so thanks again.
Thanks Leone 👍🏻🐾🧡
The owner of the Buddha must have been delighted to see their statue again , as it sure is a great looking example . Glad that Cuff is getting to keep the Helmet too .
I appreciate it when you put up what someone says or what an item is. I'm from the US and can't always understand what is being said.
Well done mudlarks! Giving back to your community by the basket loads! Thank you so very much! ❤️👏🎉
A pleasure 🧡
What a couple of muddy fun and interesting days you had!! Wow! The stuff people dump in our canels, rivers, ponds and lakes. Canels are an important part of our history. Thanks Si for helping to clean this one up!
Thanks Mudlover! 👍🏻👣🧡
It looks like a fun time when you all get together no matter what the situation is . Great job to you all👍👏
Thanks we do 👍🏻🐾🧡
I look forward, always to seeing you and Nicola doing what you love! I share your love of mudlarking!
Thanks Lee x
Great people doing great work. I about died laughing at Anna stuck in the muck, and digging herself out. 😂 😂 The story of the "Leggers" is quite interesting, I'm always surprised and amazed at quirky jobs that people performed. 🙂 🧡 🐈
That young lady has about a million watt smile. Something special.
you sure find the most interesting things in these canals when they are drained, but unfortunately most of it is junk as these canals are used as garbage dumps ! very sad !
I love that you got the trash out! Great finds. Thanks for sharing.
thought of snow shoes there...right off the bat as yall stepped in and Mike got stuck! THIS IS GOOD WATCHING! TY
Every mudlarks dream! Glad to see all the familiar faces helping out! Thanks for sharing👀⭐🌟
Cheers guys! 👍🏻🐾🧡
Great effort from everyone. People amaze me how untidy they are, looking for the easiest way of disposing of their rubbish.
Si and all your mudlarking friends how awesome you are helping the environment and having a good time ❤️from Ontario Canada 👍👍👍
Cheers!
Great job everyone. I use an old coal bucket as a trashcan in my bathroom. The guest bathroom has an old sauerkraut crock as a trashcan
Thanks Mudlover! 👍🏻👣🧡
Wow!! The WW2 Helmet is a stunning find. Good to get plastic out of the river. Nicola’s Stone bottle was cool too.
Stay safe (and muddy) 😄
Cheers Adam!
@@Sifinds It is called a Brodie helmet.
My old hunting stomping ground along the canal, in the 50s when steel helmets were everywhere we sunk a few with the big white "W" on the front up in the CUT marshgate bridge...John
W stood for air raid Warden I think.
This is what I call real mud mucking, and some nice finds.
Cheers Jim! 👍🏻🐾🧡
Great job! We would love to search a drained waterway! xx
Thanks girls! They happen now and again 👍🏻
many years ago I was caught in the incoming tide into a creek that fed into the ocean. I was all alone and sinking. By sheer will and strength i was able to extricate myself. Now that I am much older and wiser i would never do that again but watched in a cold sweat watching you guys in the mud. Did you get to keep any of the finds?
Enjoyed the history of the canal in this video. So sad to see all the trash in there. It just boggles my mind what people will throw into a water way. Good thing there are people like you and the Canal and River Trust to help maintain it. Loved the bird cage! Have a great week and keep safe.
Cheers Dianne!!
It's so awesome of you all to clear the canal, what a lot of rubbish! And some treasures as well! The helmet was a brilliant find!💖
Cheers C
I can't remember enjoying a video as much as im enjoying this right now. How rewarding!
Thank you for your dedication and service. Happy Mudlarking!!

Two birds with one stone, cleaning up the canal and great finds. Good job!
So proud of you and Nic for getting out there and helping your community. Great video. Thanks.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It's great to see everyone in the mud together having a great time together! Keep on Mudding!
Wow what a fantastic episode and great adventure. Thanks for taking us along.
When you and Nic are together it's like the others dont exist :) So sweet.
This was a great video! It looked like everyone had so much fun, and all while doing a good thing!
This is a very fun video. How nice to clean up your city, find who knows what items, and of course spend great times with friends and folks in the neighborhood .
Thanks Mudlover! 👍🏻👣🧡
What a great video! Thank you all for helping to clean up the canal! Good job guys!👍🏻

Truly stuck in the muck! Great job helping clear out the canal rubbish and luckily a few finds. 😁

Another great video! Sunday wouldn’t be Sunday without my Si-finds fix!
So nice to clean these canals. So sad to see all the Trash in them. But very interesting. Thanks for taking us along and nice to see you all together.
This is so cool that they included you guys in the clean up.. What fun!!!
Thanks, the whole thing was my idea 👍🏻👣🧡
Si, you showed volunteering can be helpful and fun. Nice finds everyone!

Just found this channel, loved those amazing finds!
This has probably already been mentioned but I'm pretty sure the funny thing on the handle of that sword is a wire grip. This would have been tightly twisted around a leather wrapped wooden handle to give the wielder a better grip on the sword.
I'm no expert but I think the sword itself could be a Victorian era police or constabulary short sword also known as a hanger. To my knowledge they were used by British police, prison wardens and sometimes Customs Agents.
Again I'm not an expert so someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
It would be interesting if the police, Customs Agents, etc would use those things today. Chopping around with swords, it would be a mess.
Great that you helped clean the canal and we learned some history. Can’t believe it wasn’t raining!
Cheers!
What a great video. How wonderful you were able to help clear the river. It was so interesting with the finds you all found.
Cheers!!
That was fabulous fun! A stellar soundtrack, and a great adventure!
Thanks so much 👍🏻🐾🧡
Tough morning this is just what I need to divert my attention! Big thank you Simon as ever.................... Enjoy
Thanks Mudlover! 👍🏻👣🧡
Thanks all for a wonderful job of cleaning the canal, I always appreciate when mud larkers gather waste as well. Thanks Si for another awesome video. I would have loved to have the buddha myself, but happy the owners got it back. Sweet of you to give Anna the bird cage. Have an awesome day Si.
The owners got it back? Did they say how it ended up in there in the first place?
Thanks Debbie
@@clicker7019 fell in during a break in apparently
That was brilliant. Great to see Nic, Anna, Monica and Flo too. You needed Josie from the Mudpies for the skateboard!
I can’t believe the stuff people through in a canal that is only five feet deep. Great job on the clean up!
British swords don't have that sort of hilt construction, the pins indicate that it's made with a standard knife method of pinning outer plates to the tang.
I actually think it is a bayonet, which generally employed a knife hilt, because when the smle (short model Lee-Enfield) took the place of the longer-barrelled Lee-Enfield rifle in around 1905, it was deemed the standard bayonet didn't reach far enough to do the same job as was previously possible, necessitating a newly designed, longer bayonet, which I believe this item is.
Awesome finds, loved the valentines pot and the Buddha, well done Si
That was a fantastic video, Simon! Wonderful to have something a little different from the usual every now and then.
Thanks Mudlover! 👍🏻👣🧡
Hi from an NZ MUDLOVER !
Shame we don't have the type of places and access available here in New Zealand
Your upcycling skills are pretty darn good too, i must say.!
4.20am Monday morning here .time to see what gets found .
Cheers
Thanks Andrew!
Where in NZ are ya? I'm gonna try the whanganui river where i'm from
Glad to see them cleaning up and finding some pieces of history at the same time!😃
That was facinating, and well done too for the all the litter removal.
Our pleasure
Y'all did such an amazing job. What good works. I bet the people that live along the canal appreciate it. Not only is what you all did important work, but you had so much fun! Good exercise and such teamwork AND you get to treasure hunt , learn and share history and play in the mud, too!
Spot on Karen x
Wow, that looked like so much fun. What a great way to look and clean. Guestion how often do they clean the canal? Great lark with awesome finds, nice to see everyone there, keep them coming Si, see you next time. 🇨🇦🐘🍁😊
Once a decade if that mate. Thanks
Great video. I spit out my coffee laughing when you said "bring out your dead".
😂😂😂😂😂
ha cheers mate! 😊👍🏻👣🧡
It’s been a creepy, dreary, violent week here and I was sick AF from a vaccination shot, so thanks to you and your pals for cheering me up.
Take care Eric - hope you're better soon.
Was it a COVID shot, which one ?
Aw thanks Eric - get well soon!
Oh!!!!! Heavens!!!!!! I hate those types of vaccine that makes you feel that you have been dropped kicked. 🥴. ❣️
Eric Smith....looks like you are also a fan of Repulsion Horrified 😎 Awesome album. Hope you are feeling better 😊
Wow, just love this show!!!! Great finds!!!
I feel sorry for that poor squaddie who lost his Brodie helmet all those years ago, they were fond of flogging back then 🤣
Loved that Buddha statue too, that was fantastic! Awesome video, man. 🤙
Cheers mate.
One can only hope he tossed it at the end of the war. Perhaps he would've missed out on the flogging. One could only hope lol
Thank you Simon for sharing your good deed, associated history & Si-finds Friends... Excellent! Good to make such a difference AND so glad the Nervous Bush lives on😂 Kindly🧡Dudley

So awesome that you guys all did this!!!! It was really interesting!

Ding ding "bring out your dead" lmao. Thanks for the Monty python throwback. Damn. I need to watch that movie.
Nothing like stuck in the muck. That was fun to watch.
Loving watching this everyone smiling and happy.

Simon, that was so unbelievable interesting with a great history and awesome finds. Good job 👍🏼🥰☺️👍🏼
I just loved this video!!!! Who doesn't get excited for a treasure hunt. Thanks for cheering me up all the way over here in Connecticut, U.S.A. Loved your smiles, laughter, and camaraderie! I felt like I was along on the hunt!
Great job Si. Looked like it may have smelled a bit down there. Thanks for the day out and the environmental clean up you and friends did.
Watching this bring so much joy
The buddha and the Birdcage were awesome & nice job doing the clean up!
Thanks Mudlover! 👍🏻👣🧡
I loved the explanation of the towpath and the horse shoe discovery. I could listen to her all day. Very interesting history.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Some great finds and good work by everyone involved. Was funny when people got stuck up to their thighs in the mud, but that's dedication for you. Thanks for sharing Si xxx
Si, I love your and Nic's videos, but this, to me, was one of THE BEST as it was so nice to see all the crap cleaned out of the water for all the wildlife, and people to enjoy in a far cleaner state. Which, really is the greatest treasure of all! - great finds, btw👍🏻
Thanks Kati! 👍🏻🐾🧡
Wow, it is amazing what was found in that canal. From past to present. Interesting in finding the bags or boxes that could be some goodies. Good that there was some awesome finds.
Cheers Sal 👍🏻🐾🧡
A great cause, great finds, and great entertainment with all of the people getting stuck in the mud!😂
Love from Tennessee USA ❤
I had a blast watching this video, it was like a comedy. Everyone getting stuck in the mud, and just having a great time, while performing good deeds. That was one nasty canal, yuck!
Wow, what an incredible place for treasure hunting!! Great job cleaning all that trash 👏👏
I like when they pick up everything and clean the area
That WW1 helmet is amazing! Im so jeleous!
Another great video Si! That's what they should do to our canal too, actually all canals. They've been talking about a clean up for decades but nothing is happening. Lot's of history to be found..........If they ever do I'll let you and Nicola know, you two are my favorites but you'll have to travel to Ontario, Canada.
Sounds like a plan!
think of the longest skating rink in the world on a man made canal, used to have a train station under ground pathway to a castle with lots of traffic especially with the rich and so much more history to be found..............
Day 2 absolutely hilarious, thanks all! Xx
Thanks Mudlover! 👍🏻👣🧡
It's great to be able to help out when you can. Even better when it's something you like doing. I've seen bits and pieces on everyone's instagram and so on, good to see the whole story.
