This is the best pedal demo I've seen yet, in reference to reverb or any other type. You didn't play random chords and mess with buttons, you showed how to master that pedal, and that is worth a million bucks in my eyes.
Hell yeah, agreed.
So many pedal reviews are just: look how good I am at classic rock B uT wITh... E F F E C T S.
Easily the best pedal channel I’ve found
My cousin is the owner of Old Blood Noise! Glad you like the product!
Nice! Is your cousin Brady or Seth? They are just the sweetest people
@@thepedalzone Seth!
Let him know I want cheaper pedals. My wallet is gonna take a big hit soon.
@@Just.Bryan2 haha! Thank you for the support!
Mine is arriving tomorrow, so I'm rewatching this for like the 15th time
Woohoooo!! Can’t wait to hear the tales of your interstellar sonic travels soon, my friend 😊🙌
I’ve had this pedal for months and have repeatedly considered selling it because I can’t get it to work the way I want. This video is exactly what I needed and saved the dark star from the chopping block.
Have you had issues with hiss in the signal chain? that seems to be the main complaint on Reverb which is kinda putting me off taking the plunge
Dude this is SUCH a great demo. You played real stuff someone would probably use this for. You showed off useable tones that someone would want in a live setting or studio setting. My only critique is I wish we could hear more of the delay mode without the other pedals. But that’s a minor nitpick, overall this is an amazing demo. Thank you! I finally feel like I understand what this pedal can do!
This format is crazy, we can learn more about how much different sounds Dark Star can do.
Happy you like it! Means a lot to me 🙏
Hope you dig the sounds and the new demo format (the old formats will stil exist. This is just another format). Dark Star is just one of the most unique pedals to ever exist. Still after all of these years (think it's existed for around 5 years), there's still nothing quite like it on the market. Well done OBNE, and thanks for the constant inspiration. If you enjoyed the video, then please consider leaving a like, comment or sharing the video with your friends. Every action truly goes a long way. THANK YOU
Do you use the v1 or 2? I’ve had the v1 since it came out and almost use it as a boost as well because of the dramatic volume jump. Wonder if you noticed that too? Also wonder if the newer ones have soft switch type thing. Love this pedal and your demos.
Jonathan Perez - I have a V2. There’s no volume jump. But if you want it you can boost it via the internal trim pot. And yes, V2 has soft-click switches
ThePedalZone I’ve got one and still learned a lot from this thanks
Do you know if this pedal was named after John Carpenter's debut feature film of the same name? I wonder what it would make a cover of "Benson Arizona" sound like!
Since you posted this video, I've been seeing a resurgence of them on reddit, facebook, and instagram posts
Or maybe they were always there and I'm just now noticing because of you....
The sounds that start at around 4:35 are everything
Yeah, it's my favorite sound in it as well ☺
That part reminds me of Terminator 2 Judgement Day's OST.
@@BlueAltitudes maybe that's why I liked it so much!
Bitcrush mode with a beefy Fuzz is epic as well - so epic. Valhalla epic.
@@bootlegnjack yeah I bet that's amazing!
Yes! Just got one can't wait. Gorgeous sounds in here and I learned a bunch about the pedal. Some really cool knob configurations I think I'm going to love!
The way you do your demos, you pull the listener in into the sounds and the feel of the pedal.
I love it a lot, you are awesome
That’s extremely kind of you. Thank you 🙏
That Cello-like setting sounded awesome! I've owned this pedal for a few years but still haven't experimented with it enough it seems. That ambient feedback tip was also something I hadn't ever thought of. Thanks for letting me fall in love with this pedal again!
Cheers, man! Really happy you liked the demo. Yeah, that dark cello-like setting is one of my faves. Completely transforms your instrument. It's amazing to drive that sound into some vibrato and airy reverb for further movement and dimension 😊
Stefan, thanks for these beautiful demos. I especially love it when you venture into sci-fi territory, like with this one and the Mercury 7 demo (one of my all-time favorite demos; I love your playing there). Take good care of yourself!
Thank you soo much for taking the time to review all these new generation awesome pedals! Very inspiring,! ....also I think your recording studio is amazing!
Clicked right away! Been waiting for you to demo this!! Thank you ❤
Amazing to hear. Happy I was able to deliver 😊
Thank you for demos treating the more pad/drone aspects of the Dark Star. And the way it fed into that Arapnoid! Glitchy and almost granular-like stutter heaven. Unexpected. 😊
I love discovering pedals that are older and don’t have a whole lot of hype around them. This and the Black Fountain are high up on my list. These guys make fun pedals!
The black fountain is definitely underrated. I bought it on a whim, and was shocked that more people don't use it. It sits behind your signal so nicely.
What does the BF do vis-a-vis the Dark Star?
MAS MACHINA Black Fountain is an oil can delay; Dark Star is a pad reverb. Two different pedals.
Happy you discovered something new in the old 👌
I was looking what to fill my last board slot with, saw this on a random pedal board picture, came here and instantly knew it was for me.
Re watching all your videos for the 10th time and I’m way back into my dark star 🙏😍
You made me fall in love with this pedal. I had never even heard of it before watching this
Thank you for showing all these specific settings and sounds! Already loved this pedal and now I feel like you're sharing multiple pathways to explore.
My pleasure, man! I’m stoked to hear you found new insight and inspiration in the video. There’s so many rad ways to use the Dark Star 😊
Just got one today for my birth day, and I cannot wait to try these settings out and make more! Thanks!
Heeeey! Happy birthday, man. What an amazing gift. You're in for a beautiful ambient ride. Enjoy!
@@thepedalzone Thanks Stefan, it is a great pedal! Had fun making music with it.
Best, most beautiful, format ever. You’ve nailed the perfect demo. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted.
Oh, man! I'm deeply honored to hear that. Thank you so much for the kindness ❤
I got this pedal because of this video and I do not regret one single penny...Thank You Stefan!!!
Wow, the amazing variety of tones you coax out of this pedal is really impressive. Great stuff!
Oh wow! Thank you so much. Super kind of you 🙏
I’ve had this pedal on my wish list for awhile now. So glad to see/hear this. You’ve definitely convinced me that it’s amazing.
I’m honored to hear that, man. Just such a unique and inspiring ambient device 😊
Such a great and moving pedal review. Subscribed!
Oh my! Thank you so much. Means the world to me you enjoyed the demo and that you hit that subscribe button. Cheers 😊🙏
By far the best research and demos on pedals, thank you.
You’re too kind. Thanks for the motivating words. Truly made my day ❤️🙏
I thought having the Earthquaker Afterneath, Transmisser, and Avalanche Run would be sufficient enough on the reverb front but it turns out I'm horribly mistaken. Another great video!
Thanks, man! You can never have too much reverb 😂😊 Dark Star in Crush Mode into Transmisser is one of my favorite combos
You thought having one job was enough to fuel your G.A.S.
Then there's Chase Bliss Dark World and Walrus Audio Slo... never have too many reverbs! My wallet hates me
Im watching this saying the same thing. I have the afterneath, avalanche, and astral destiny. But this thing is a whole different animal
Such a great review! I love this pedal!
Thanks, man! The Dark Star is easy to love 🖤
That ending is bloody brilliant. This was awesome.
Awww. Thank, man! Really means a lot ❤️🙏 Yeah, feeding a long or infinite reverb from Dark Star into other pedals is one of my absolute favorite ways to use it 😊
An old favorite of mine for killer big, weird reverb sounds. Thanks as always for these videos and some fun new settings you’ve unearthed here!
Thank you so much! Happy to hear the video provided you with some new sounds to explore in this wonderful pedal 😊🙌
I can't believe you found a way to make your demos better!! I can't believe that was a whole 10 minutes, it barely felt like 2. Thanks for each and every video you put out! You're a huge inspiration to me with guitar, keep it up!!
Wow! I’m beyond humbled. Thank you so much for the kind words. Made me smile from ear to ear ❤️❤️❤️
perfect demo!
Wonderful sounds, I didn't realise it could so much!
Thanks, dude! Awesome to hear that my demo helped reveal some of the massive potential this pedal holds 😊
dude you absolutely nail these demos
great job
Thanks a ton! ❤
This has been on my list for a long time. It's definitely jumped towards the top after watching this
Oh wow! That’s amazing to hear. Really happy you liked the demo 🙏
perfect total package! great stuff!
Thanks! Happy you dig it!
Makes me want a dark star again. Lovely playing as always.
Thanks, man! Hope you get a Dark Star at some point again 😊
I had no idea this pedal went so deep...Beautiful, inspiring playing as always. It's nice to hear your comfortability and skill with a favorite of yours-the proof is in the pudding. This is going on the trade-for list! Take care, from Oakland,CA
Thank you so much for the kind words, man! Yeah, this pedal is a true textural wormhole. So many sounds in this thing 😊
Finally a helpful play through of this pedal! :)
Cheers! Happy to hear it was helpful to you
Love this vid and the new format!!! This has been one of my favorite pedals for a long time, so glad you did an in depth with it. I have a V2. Every mode is fantastic in its own way, but I do seem to lean a lot on pitch mode, one an octave down and one neutral(for slider pitch changes). Have always had it near the end of my chain, but since seeing your video with Andy Othling and now this, it looks fun to throw it near the beginning. I have it going into an Afterneath and then Blooper. Can get some great ambience going!!
Thanks, man! Really happy you liked the demo. Dark Star is such a unique and powerful pedal. I very rarely run reverbs 100% wet, but the Dark Star i run 100% wet basically 95% of the time. It's just one of the best, if not the best, textural early-chain-verb ever made. You should definitely move it to the front, and see what that inspires 😊
Just bought this after seeing your video. Incredibly excited to see what I can get out of it. Excellent demo.
That's so cool to hear! This is just a wonderfully unique textural device. I'm sure you're gonna love it.
First, thanks for all of the great demos. I've bought a couple of pedals based off of them. Also, I love this video. I immediately wanted one as soon as I saw it. As soon as I showed up with this pedal to my next band practice one of my bandmates said "that sounds fucking incredible...we should write a song around it". This pedal writes songs, or at least inspires them. It's pretty amazing once you get the hang of it and easier to use than you would think. Caveat, I play in a metal band, so you can get some really dark, eerie sounds with it but it's not a one trick pony and it is a pedal that can be used practically. I've had a ton of fun with it.
Your videos are so professionally put together! People have no idea what's required in terms of skill to make quality videos. I really dig your channel Stefan!
Thank you so much! Means a lot to me that you can see the stupid amount of hours I put into these videos 🙏❤
never before have i needed a pedal so much
Really happy you liked the demo. Dark Star is one of my absolute favorite pedals. Hope you get one soon
Beautiful...just beautiful...🙌🏻🖤✨
Thanks! Dark Star is just amazing
It is thanks to you that I got one, man. And I will be thankful for that always
That's amazing to hear. I'm honored 🙏
Just beautiful man. Well done and inspiring as always? Cheers
Thank you so very much! 🙏
For real I'll never get rid of this pedal. One of my favorite idea generators for sure. Awesome demo!
Same here. Happy you liked the demo. Means a lot 🙏
Ok, you sold me this pedal and... I wanna say "thank you for making me fall in love" with this little beauty. 🙏👏👐
I just got mine today. It's truly amazing!
Just so good! Happy to hear you dig it
Awesome tones!
Thank you! Dark Star is just full of awesomeness
Ordered this pedal because of this video, it arrives tomorrow! I can’t tell you how excited I am!
You’re making me excited as well!! Can’t wait to hear what you think of it. You’re always welcome to tag me on IG with stuff you make with it 😊 I’m humbled and honored that my little demo inspired you to pick up this incredibly inspiring device 🙏❤️
That was fucking excellent Stefan!
Really loved it.
DUDE! Thank you so very much ❤️❤️
Holy shit man that is such ethereal playing
As usual with your demos, the pedal sounds great and your playing and composition are well-suited to it.
The stuff you played in this video could be an alternative soundtrack to Suspiria - so dark and beautiful.
Thank you! That's incredibly kind of you to say ❤
Just as your Rever demo made me buy one, now I want a Dark Star.
Definitely get the Dark Star. One of the most magical pedals ever made 💫🖤
Some very nice settings for the DS. Have put them all on paper to try them out. Very helpful, excellent demo!
Cheers, man! Awesome to hear you found so many sounds usable in your own context. Have fun exploring 😊👌
Best pedal channel. Nothing else to add.
Awwwwww, man! Thank you SO MUCH!
I know you did this review a year ago, however your vid sold me on this pedal! Awesome job!
Well, this pedal definitely never gets old. So I'm extremely honored and happy that you found my demo, and that it inspired you to pick up this incredible pedal. It's one of my all-time faves. You're in for a treat 😊
i hope you enjoy making this demos and tutorials. we, the audioslaves thanks you. 🤓
If I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t be making them. It’s that simple 😊 I’m happy you find value in the videos though. Makes it even more enjoyable to keep making them
Beautiful Stefan! ❤️
You reminded me to rediscover and discover all the potential in this awesome pedal.
Awesome! It's always important to be able to find something new in the old 😊
ThePedalZone
Indeed!
That’s one of my weaknesses in a pedal lifecycle.
I get them, I try to explore everything. Then I settle for my favourite/most usable settings and forget to revisit and explore for new inspiration.
O M G you just took it to the next level
Awwww, man! Thank you kindly ❤️🙏
SOO dang gorgeous man! Thanks so much for the fantastic review
My pleasure, man. I'm just super thrilled to hear you enjoyed it so much. I love this pedal to death 😊🙏
ThePedalZone can’t see why not. Great playing and yea wonderful pedal
Wonderful video about this pedal!
Thank you!
Oh yes, ambient tones! I'm having such a shitty day and this makes me feel better. Thanks :)
I’m happy that my video could create a zen zone for you to find peace of mind in ❤️
I agree. One of my best reverbs🤘
Happy you dig it 😊
Damn yo! Sick pedal. Did not expect it to do all this stuff.
U da man Steph.
Happy to hear it surprised you in a positive way. It's a phenomenal pedal. One of my all time favorites
I love this pedal i got it yesterday and have to master the dark side grateful for the vid bro thank you 🤜🤛
Happy you enjoyed the demo. Dark Star is an all time favorite pedal of mine. Contains so many amazing textures
This is the EXACT reason, I love electric guitar.
We love electric guitar for the same reason. YAY! ❤
I loooove how Boards of Canada that last bit was! I just bought the Dark Star again a few weeks back, after mistakenly flipping it a while back. I am amazed continually by how it sounds: truly there is nothing that sounds like it :-) Great work Stefan and I dig the new video format, sometime more sounds and less talk equals more feels.
Thank you so much for the kind words, my friend. Means a lot to me 🙏 Stoked you enjoyed the new format and the sounds. Yeah, I love that crackling lo-fi vibrato bend you can get in delay mode when tweaking the delay time. Just brings all the feelz 😊
I love your talking Stefan, but this sounds like it’ll be a great series!!!
Thanks, bud! Happy you enjoyed it 😊🙏
Very nice pedal, demo and playing.
Thank you kindly!
I'm obsessed, I can't wait for mine to come in today
Stoked to hear you got one on the way 😊🙌
Hi Stefan, I like all of your pedal video formats, and listening to you is always informative and very inspiring.
First of all, thank you for doing a video of a pedal, that is on the market already many years. It shows, that you really like this pedal.
The Dark Star is on my board since some years too, and I appreciate it very much for its unique sounds and these crazy pads it can create for ambient music. Nevertheless your video gave me many new inspirations to try out with this gorgeous pedal. I always like to feed it into another reverb, like my Eventide Space. Outer space is the limit. ;-)
Your channel is growing to one of the best pedal channels here on UA-cam. Great work! Thanks!
Dude! Thank you so much for all of your kind words. I'm pretty blown away by it. I'm just really happy to hear you're enjoying the videos. They take a lot of time to make, but when they are received and appreciated so well by people like you, then it makes all the hours totally worth it. Thank you! ❤
Super good demo
Thank you so much!
Well, here’s another pedal you sold me on (I believe that’s pedal number 7). I got it in the mail a couple days ago and love it so far. I’m using it as my early chain reverb before my dirt section (my late chain is the Mercury 7). This pedal is like a beautiful psychotic mind. It can produce some of the most beautiful but eerie sounds. I plan to do a lot of exploring with drones with it. Thanks for the great demo...as usual Stefan. 😎🤟
that's a very cool demo of a unique pedal
Thank you very very much 🙏
Wow this pedal is so beautiful and amazing!! You make me want to play guitar, I’d love to try this on bass!! There’s not enough ambient bass pedal channels out there! Maybe I should do that lol
good demo!
Thank you very very much!
Absolutely sick.......
Cheers! Love the Dark Star so much!
Just bought one. Had my eye on one of these for three years.
Congrats, man! This pedal is SO GOOD. An all-time fave of mine 😊🙌
@@thepedalzone Thanks man! I am sure it will become my favorite as well. Now to save up for the Enzo Meris you demo's. You had me sold on that immediately. I wonder how it would sound in a chain with Dark Star after it.
Such an awesome pedal and a great demo as always! I had no idea about how the loops degrade over time when they are frozen. Have one going now and it's starting to disintegrate and flange in such a cool way.
Thanks, man! Yeah, I discovered that disintegrating drone sound by pure chance while recording a drone for a track I was working on with a friend. Suddenly the drone just started to fall apart and it was the coolest experience ever.
My fav verb pedal!!! I just picked up an alpha haunt fuzz two days ago… can’t wait to pair these on some dirty synths… 🤘
Alpha Haunt and Dark Star are a match made in shoegaze heaven. You're in for a really fun time
Was on the fence with Afterneath vs Dark Star for a front chain reverb. This video settled that battle! Dark Star on the way!
Awesome! Dark Star rules
best demo ever !!!
Thanks, man! That’s very kind of you 🙏
Ahhh to have money, must be a wonderful thing! Love your videos and I may have to get this one 😉. It’s in my range
Really happy you enjoyed the demo. Definitely get a Dark Star if you can. It's such an inspiring pedal.
One of the best pedals I own
Same here 😊
Sounds beautiful. Reminds me of Have a nice life and salvia Palth
Who else watches this to help them fall asleep at night?? So beautiful
Awwww! Thank you! I'm humbled to hear that my videos are able to give you moments of zen ❤
@@thepedalzone your vids are awesome man! Keep up the good work🤘🏻
9:44...feeling those Manual vibes right there!!
Sold. How dare you, sir. I was not planning on spending that kind of money this morning...
I’m “sorry” ❤️
I came here after watching your OBNE Sunlight review. Again another perfect demo of a simple yet powerful reverb, no menus or fiddly dip switch stuff going on. I was sold on the Sunlight now I'm not sure? Maybe both, create a lush reverb stereo soup with a bit of parallel/series/feedback blending through a boosted passive Matrix mixer? Keep up the good work.
Very very COOOOooooooolll!!
Thanks!! Dark Star is hella cool!
Damn. That bit crush is amazing
Yup! That’s the magic maker right there 💫 🧙♂️
Dude this pedal is amazing and has been in the wishlist for a long time. I know you saw it on Andy Othling’s board and drooled! I love where you take pedals and I constantly ask my own board...”what would Stefan do?”
Dark Star is amazing. I didn’t pick it up after seeing it on Andy’s board though. I’ve owned a Dark Star for almost 4 years now. First the V1 and then I switched to the V2. It’s one of my all time favorite pedals, and I’ve been using it as a first in chain reverb for all of those years. It’s truly where it shines. But the interview I did with Andy showed me that a lot of people weren’t aware of the Dark Star and the importance of first in chain reverbs. So it did make me prioritize to make a demo of this beautiful pedal, so more people could discover its epicness. Honored to hear you find inspiration in the videos and that it translates to the way you experiment with your signal chain in real life 😊
Stefan, I can’t overstate how much I love your demos. You really show the abilities of each of these pedals.
I’m wondering if there’s any chance you might review the Flower Pedals Hosta soon? It seems like something that would sound incredible in your hands..
Thank you so much for the kind words. They go straight to heart ❤❤❤ No plans for a Hosta demo though.
Reminding me that I don't use mine nearly enough! Awesome work as always.
Thank you very much! Now go use that Dark Star some more. It's KILLER! 😊
Waiting on mine to ship, directly from OBNE. I absolutely love the minim reverb/delay, and cannot wait to add this to my favorite ambient reverb/reverb+delay pedals, Walrus Slo, Fathom, Earthquaker Afterneath V2, Avalanche run V2, and the OBNE Minim. This video just makes me feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. Absolutely can’t wait to run not only my guitars through it, but my Moog Grandmother and Soma Lyra-8 as well.
you make me feel less crazy about running 4 reverbs aha
I use mine with the ibanez DE7, I'm in love with the both of them ❤️
DE7 is awesome. A true hidden gem
