First single off the first album; November 1972. Pretty much everyone's introduction to this band back then. The second single off this album: "Reelin' In the Years" single came out in March of '73.
Great reaction!! In my opinion, you hit the nail on the head with today's music. They don't want to move away from what they know sells. These older groups have such creativity, melody, harmony, variety of styles, variety of instruments etc etc etc. I'm so glad to have grown up with all these amazing groups of the 60's and 70's!!! Thanks Shawn!!
It IS fire! It's my favorite Steely Dan. It feels like a song to hear on the beach in the baking sun! Others I love are "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Deacon Blues," very cool songs
I still haven’t met a Steely Dan song I didn’t like - I don’t have that kind of relationship with any other band. And I’ve been listening to them for 50 years!!! ☮️❤️
You- “such a blend of musical spices…. “ And then the Sitar comes in and your head blows up…😅 keep it up bro, Steely Dan is literally ear candy for your mind and your soul 🤘🏼😎
This was the music of my time. Driving around the country roads, drinking, smoking a lot of pot, the beach, parties or just someone's house vibing to this mix of great 70s music are memories that will forever be in my mind and heart. The many concerts were just another adventure and journey of my fabulous time in my youth. Great reaction. Much peace to you ❤️
My first Steely Dan song! I was a kid but knew how special it was way back then. My love for SD just grew from there. There was a saying that went: Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band! SD doesn't have a bad or even mediocre song. They are all fire! Pure talent.
Do It Again; has a smooth Latin jazzy feel, with the great Skunk Baxter on Guitar and Jim Hodder on drums. It's about things that seem to motivate men, namely Money, Violence, and Women. Each of them is destructive in their own way. Steely Dan is big-time intelligent.
I agree with your analysis, about "new" music. I would listen to it if bands/groups/artists, would get WAY more creative. Great music is great music whether it's 50 years old or brand new
I'm old...ugh...but the music we were blessed with makes it worth it. Lol Fun to see young people discovering it now. I'm reliving my youth one song at a time!
This band has been around since the 60s and they still tour...they are known for their bluesy, jazzy, funky + music...I'd say 75 percent of them are studio musicians and their back up vocals are really good...by far my favorite band and soon to be yours...try Aja next or time out mind you'll love it...
This song is the ultimate groove. My favorite song from Steely Dan. Cautionary tale of giving in to your vices that could ruin your life. The enticement makes you "Do It Again," even though you know it's bad for you. Great analysis on the musical side. The 60s, 70s and 80s are when artists were truly artist - creative and unique. I grew up with the best music. Luckily, it is recorded for younger and future generations to enjoy and appreciate.
At the time this came out, there was so many great bands with so many great songs that it seems now we were in some kind of vortex or expanding understanding of how music would affect all people. The lessons of this song can be broken down to what you said.Seems like he got away with something and now he's gonna do it again.Once we get to the position that we won't do it again we can move into the Light
This was literally on the radio all the time and I was in kindergarten first grade second grade third grade really it lasted for years. It's amazing. Search really interesting trying to analyze it from an older musician point of view now that I'm 60. But still that feeling remains and I think that's the key to this song, it's got some cool wah guitar solo stuff but, When this was new it seemed so new and we all took it fairly seriously
Steely Dan is one of the greatest rock groups of all time. A perfect example of how to fuse elements of many different genres to create amazing music. Another group with similar latin jazz vibes is War... Low Rider, Why Cant We Be Friends, Cisco Kid
Even back in the 60s the music industry had a grip on artists, with many stories of artists fighting the system and trying to break free which they did much of the time from the late 60s and throughout the 70s and into the 90s. For instance the Beatles were at their best when they founded their own record label, Apple Records. But that war for artistic freedom and integrity has been lost decades ago to the large media conglomerates. I think one reason why we see so many solo artists today instead of great ensemble bands is that a single artist is easier to control and cheaper to keep under contract. It's all about efficiency nowadays.
The musicians of the 60's and 70's thru the early 80's were all at the top of their game It seems that there is little incentive to become an actual musician anymore. With all the technology we have today where stars are all marketing gimmicks and fakery, i fear our music will all be AI in the near future. And the next generation won't care or appreciate what was lost
Great reaction! Steely Dan is in my all time top five bands. FYI the name Steely Dan comes from a 1959 novel called "Naked Lunch". Steely Dan was the nickname of a metal sexual device in the story.
Can you imagine being this good off of their first album and then maintaining or even get better and better as they progressed in their production and choices of studio musicians! A total classic tune! After this album they stopped touring and so Donald and Walter could focus on production only using the best studio musicians along with these 2 magicians, (Donald and Walter)!SHAWN, back in the 1970’s many albums were great because so much was put into each and every song with no fillers! I could name fifty or maybe even a hundred albums that great song after great song. Competition was fierce in a good way!
Great reaction, Shawn!! Steely Dan are awesome. Has anyone mentioned what a Steely Dan is? Or was, I should say? Back then there was a toy specifically made for the ladies and ironically it was called the Steely Dan. I'm sure the bands name means something diff but I don't have that information with me at this time.
When I see this album cover or listen to this song I’m immediately jettisoned back to 1973, driving from Syracuse, NY up to Oswego State to visit my friend for the weekend. My little cassette player sitting on the passenger seat playing Can’t Buy A Thrill at full volume. This album has stood the test of time.
It’s so much fun watching you react to music that I’ve heard for years. It’s bringing back a lot of memories 💜👵🏼✌🏼🌻 Some of the Beatles songs have the sitar in them played by George or Ravi Shankar.
Shawn, really, really enjoyed your reaction!!! If you haven't yet heard "Reelin' in the Years" off this album, definitely check it out!! So much to explore, highly recommend "The Caves of Altamira" from The Royal Scam album.
I've been saving this reaction for when I could really enjoy it and now I can and a I do. Could you put your daughter on the show? She must be awesome.
I thought George did fine, but was really surprised when I saw Ravi Shankar interviewed about it. He basically said he sucked, though politely. Guess there’s quite a high standard in India.
This is a great groove. Thank you, Shawn.😊 Give Joe Bonamassa song, Drive, live at Carnegie Hall a listen. He has some instruments in this song I've never heard before, and I'm 68.😅
My opinion is younger people have had technology to distract them from learning to play a musical instrument. It's really sad to witness. It's "easier" to use technology than it is to put in the time and effort of learning to play an instrument.
Steely Dan hired the best available musicians, took many many takes of the same part until it was just right (as many as 50 takes), spent many hours on the production and mixing in order to get a product that was as close to perfect as was possible in the name of art. Record companies now don’t want to make that kind of investment but want to make a quick buck. 50 years from now I would guess that people will still listening to Steely Dan but probably not Lil Nas X.
The only thing better than listening to this song, is watching someone else hear this great song for the first time.😁👍
Amen to that!
Great song. Great album. Great band.
One of the greatest grooves in rock. I never have grown tired listening to this song. Thanks Shawn for spinning it here
First single off the first album; November 1972. Pretty much everyone's introduction to this band back then. The second single off this album: "Reelin' In the Years" single came out in March of '73.
Yes! I was 11 first listening to it on the car radio. Amazing guitar and groove!
Saw them twice in Houston. AMAZING❤
Dude!!! It’s sooooo good, right???? ❤️ The musicianship and songwriting is just top tier.
And that’s their first album! So good!
Steely Dan and The Alan Parsons Project...........Both are FIRE!!!!!! Good job Shawn.
My fave Steely Dan.
It IS fire! It's my favorite Steely Dan. It feels like a song to hear on the beach in the baking sun! Others I love are "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Deacon Blues," very cool songs
Nothing I mean nothing compared to to the amazing tallent that flooded our ears at this point in music history!!!
The coolest sounding band in the universe. Ain't nothing like Steely Dan's music. From their debut album to their last one, they are all great.
I still haven’t met a Steely Dan song I didn’t like - I don’t have that kind of relationship with any other band. And I’ve been listening to them for 50 years!!! ☮️❤️
Heard the song a million times and love it, but to see the smile on your face while vibing to this is double the pleasure for me
Steely Dan is exceptional all the time but this song is an all time favorite
Yep. My first Steely Dan. When we don't learn from our mistakes, we go back and do it again...
Human nature, we never learn.
There’s much more to experience. Go back, Jack, do it again!
Others have said it, now I'll say it. "Steely Dan. Your favorite bands favorite band."
Probably my favorite song of theirs. Steely Dan is fantastic,,,,maybe top 10. 💥💥💥👍😎
You- “such a blend of musical spices…. “
And then the Sitar comes in and your head blows up…😅 keep it up bro, Steely Dan is literally ear candy for your mind and your soul 🤘🏼😎
An instantly recognizable song if you were around in the early seventies.
Much peace to you ❤️
Ear Candy !!! You nailed it 🎸❤️🔥 60’ & 70’s 🥰
I'm also glad I grew up with this fantastic music (1956).
🎶🎶🎶👍

This track is absolutely amazing 🤩 👌. The whole album is amazing
Love Steely Dan! Thanks for the reaction! ☮️❤️😎

I imagine that’s Denny Dias on guitar, no?
Yes Denny Dias.@@hklinker
Denny Dias on electric sitar guitar.
That's Denny Dias playing the lead sitar
Their first hit!! What a banger! I knew they were special in 1972. Now, my favorite band and will be until I die with a smile one my face.
never a miss with the Dan
This entire album is great
What you are doing is helping the young generation to know!
Definitely one of their greatest in my book, I'm 61 and still loving this song like it's brand new to me!
I agree with your analysis, about "new" music. I would listen to it if bands/groups/artists, would get WAY more creative. Great music is great music whether it's 50 years old or brand new
Love this song. It always gave me a Santana vibe.
I"ll say it every singel time you play one of Steely Dans songs ~ there are no bad songs ~ they're all amazing creations for our ears ~ ~ ~ ~
Reelin in the Years, Peg, Kid Charlemagne, Deacon Blues
My favourite Steely Dan tune!
One of the best 5 albums of all time in my opinion.
I'm old...ugh...but the music we were blessed with makes it worth it. Lol
Fun to see young people discovering it now. I'm reliving my youth one song at a time!

I love Walter Becker's guitar. RIP
Walter Becker played bass on this tune… the solo is Denny Dias on a “Sitar”.
@@Rock_Snob thanks for the clarification. I'm not always sure who plays solos, either.
That's an electric sitar.
Reeling in the Years is a good one if you haven't heard it already, great reaction.
This was literally on the radio all the time and I was in kindergarten first grade second grade third grade really it lasted for years. It's amazing. Search really interesting trying to analyze it from an older musician point of view now that I'm 60.

Check out Steely Dan's "FM" if you like this one.
I'm blessed to have had the 60s, 70s and 80s as the sound track of my life! Born in '59, the perfect year to start that journey of music🔥🤘✌
The electric sitar in this song makes a real special sound. Grew up with this one. Love Steely Dan! They were great live in concert too!
Open the windows and turn it up. We need our groove back!
Steely is a music genre unto themselves...😉
Steely Dan is one of the greatest rock groups of all time. A perfect example of how to fuse elements of many different genres to create amazing music. Another group with similar latin jazz vibes is War... Low Rider, Why Cant We Be Friends, Cisco Kid
Amazing reaction, I am really enjoying this channel, cheers mate
I don't think the character is necessarily getting away with things, but not learning from the experience and getting back in the same situation.
Forever a fan!!!
Truly need to do some Little River Band.. . A long way there.
Pure ear candy! Love it.
Show Biz Kids and My Old School from their sophomore album!
My favorite from them!
Steely Dan was perfect. Not a flaw or a hole anywhere. This is deep dish compared to thin crust that you get today.

Can't Buy A Thrill is one of those albums. A joy to kick back and listen to every song. Quite a journey.
Aaaaaah Steely Dan. The world would be even shittier without you.
Great reaction! Steely Dan is in my all time top five bands. FYI the name Steely Dan comes from a 1959 novel called "Naked Lunch". Steely Dan was the nickname of a metal sexual device in the story.
The epitome of groovy!!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍

This is truly one of the best and identifiable songs of the 70s. I believe the song meaning is about karma and reincarnation.
Classic with a capital *C*
You have to Listen to Deacon Blues if you haven’t heard it yet.
Try "Reelin' in the Years", mentioned earlier. Great song! First one I ever heard by Sreely Dan. Heard it when I came out. Thanks!
Such a great song 🤩 another one I haven’t heard in years!! ✌️😄 🎼♥️

Some of the Beatles songs have the sitar in them played by George or Ravi Shankar.
Also by The Rolling Stones. Brian Jones played it, Paint it Black, is one of them
This song takes me back to 72 when I saw them with the Doobie Brothers in Salt Lake City at the Terrace Ballroom
One of my SD favourites!
I recommend,
Bodhisattva
The Fez
Can't Buy A Thrill is a great album, all good songs. Although in truth you could say the same thing about anything Steely Dan
Shawn, really, really enjoyed your reaction!!! If you haven't yet heard "Reelin' in the Years" off this album, definitely check it out!! So much to explore, highly recommend "The Caves of Altamira" from The Royal Scam album.
Denny Dias' finest solo? Hard to say...he's done a lot of them.
I've been saving this reaction for when I could really enjoy it and now I can and a I do. Could you put your daughter on the show? She must be awesome.
Shawn, man, if you are going to start a petition to bring back these instruments I will be the first to sign.
Chillzz then. And still ❤
George Harrison also used a (regular) sitar. I think he used it on My Sweet Lord and/or If I can’t Have You.
I thought George did fine, but was really surprised when I saw Ravi Shankar interviewed about it. He basically said he sucked, though politely. Guess there’s quite a high standard in India.
in those times have a similutud with santana Steely Dan
This is a great groove. Thank you, Shawn.😊 Give Joe Bonamassa song, Drive, live at Carnegie Hall a listen. He has some instruments in this song I've never heard before, and I'm 68.😅
Check out “Reeling in the Years “ same album
I have that one on the channel 😊
The UA-cam channel " Professor Of Rock " did a video about this song a few days ago, worth checking out
My opinion is younger people have had technology to distract them from learning to play a musical instrument. It's really sad to witness. It's "easier" to use technology than it is to put in the time and effort of learning to play an instrument.

Two more from them that you might enjoy bad sneakers & Rikki don’t lose that number
Show Biz Kids is a killer
PEG must be on the list as well....
Tori Amos does a wiiiicked cover of this song that goes places you would never expect.
Nikki Don't Lose That Number by Steely Dan
