I love all of these gorgeous Gucci canvas bags but I loved your Soho Disco sooo much too!! I just recently got my very first Gucci bag (soho disco)for my 42nd birthday about 2 weeks ago and I watched your videos comparing it to your Pochette Métis and it really helped me make up my mind after seeing how much you could actually fit inside of yours!! I loved the beautiful brown color of yours but mine is black and I love it too! I love your Gucci collection and your vintage bags still look amazing!!

I only carry Gucci and Louis Vuitton. It is so nice to see that Gucci used metal zippers on your new one. That is the only gripe I have with Gucci--plastic zippers. I love their bags though.

I just stumbled upon this video, as I await my new Ophidia bag. Jennifer, you and I must be about the same age. I started collecting Gucci in my college years. At one point I even had Gucci license plates LOL! This video makes me want to break out my vintage collection. It also makes me regret all of the pieces that I threw away....You are SO much more gentle on your bags than I was! I had pieces that would literally disintegrate inside, and the piping on the outside would end up sticking out. I found a shoe-repairman to fix my straps. Lol!!! In college, I even had a Gucci day-planner (it had Gucci embossed paper!). I tell my kids this, and they are like: "What's a day planner?"

The first vintage bag is even older than me yet still looks very good considering how many years it's been used! WOW. I've been eyeing one in the crystal coated canvas. I wonder if that version would hold its value better since it's coated?

I love the Ophidia line. There’s just something about that print. I was gifted a navy one from the 80’s and I sold it about 10 years ago. I really always wanted the the beige with red/ green stripe. When they released this line I grabbed the size of your vintage Ophidia:).

Hello and thank you for your video! I just aquired a vintage (80's) bag. I had no idea that is an actual leather interior! Mine unfortunately has a plethora of pen marks and I have been desperately trying to find out how to remove them. Yours are lovely, thanks for sharing!
Hi Jennifer--I loved watching your walk down memory lane! I have a vintage Gucci similar to your first bag (mine is blue) and the inside of the bag is some kind of suede-looking material. I was curious to know if your lining is of the same material? Mine is flaking, which I've been told can happen with some of the 80s bags. Loved all the bags, and the little mini one (that looks like your first one) is sooo adorable! I can see why you bought that one! Good memories--thanks for sharing!

I love them all! It’s funny, we’re about the same age and when I was a teenager in the 80’s I fell in love with a knock off Gucci bag because of the stripes. I think I may still have it in my parents attic. I’m sure it wasn’t real because there’s no way I would’ve found it at a flea market. LOL I also have always loved the LouisVuitton pattern and I came across a knock off in the 90’s at a thrift store. I didn’t care, back then I just liked the look of the bags. Now I am fortunate enough to have some LV, but not Gucci yet! :-)
Debbie Fay You should totally (“totally” said in my best valley girl accent!) try to find your bag from your parents attic and have it authenticated. I have heard many stories of luxury bags found in flea markets back then! People were less aware of designer labels then and knock offs weren’t as easy to come by!

Gucci bags don’t hold their value as much as the big 3 (Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton), so they aren’t a good choice if you are wanting to sell in a few years. I tend to buy the ones that I can see myself keeping forever. Their marmot collection will probable keep their value better than some of the rest, though. The disco has done very well, too. Thanks!
I love your vintage collection. It goes to show that quality lasts. I'm saving for the marmont (slowly) and cannot wait to have it in my hands but I can't decide between black red or cream....! Nice problems to have 😊

Great post Jennifer! Your helpful videos guided me on my first LV purchase a couple of years ago! I coveted a Gucci bag back in college in the 80's! A sorority sister had one and I loved it! Looking at buying an Ophidia now. I kind of like the look of the new Ophidia bucket bag. Not sure about the ribbon trim around the bottom. How will it wear? Is it as classic looking as the construction of the mini you have? Appreciate your thoughts!
Thank you, Laura! Not sure how the trim around the bottom will do... it looks very worn on the back of my half moon shaped bag, but perfect on my other vintage one. The new bucket bag is adorable!! I would venture a guess that the ribbon trim on the back of the bag will wear much faster than the front (as it rubs against you). If you carry it front side out, it should not be a huge problem. Let me know what you decide to do. Very interested!!
Nice vintage collection! I believe that last Gucci you showed is called the Guccicssima? Something like that. I remember looking at it years ago and deciding it was too big for my tastes. Also, with your mini Ophedia, do you have an issue with the bag flipping upside down? I have the original model that I got back during the early spring (it also had a non-detachable key ring instead of detachable). Mine always flips upside down when I pick it up unless I make sure the straps are facing the right direction. Soho did a similar thing. Just curious if they had addressed this with the newest model. I still love my bag and will continue to use it but IMO, it is totally a design flaw.
All you have to do is use a little gorilla glue on that strap and press down for about 60 seconds and your strap will be good as new. Don’t forget to wipe away the excess glue on the side if you put too much. Let it rest for 24 hours and you are good to go.That is how I fixed my vintage Fendi baguette strap💁🏽♀️

my mom also mentions how the old Gucci bags had leather interior and her vintage Gucci bags still look brand new! She convinced me not to buy the Gucci Soho because of this reasoning....what are your thoughts? still worth it? obviously the quality can not compare to back in the day!

Yes, the quality seems to be very similar from what I can tell. Nearly identical!

yes, it is similar to the compartment layout of the pochette metis! For some reason I am not overly excited about it though...It looks a bit stiff for my liking, I think. I will have to see it in person before I know for sure how to feel about it! Let me know what you think if you get it, or try it in person.

I loved Gucci!!! They were my first lux bags in the 80's and I could kick myself for getting rid of them...UGH! But mine were all in the blue canvas and leather...haven't seen any of those! I also had some that were gifts from my parents when they went to Italy...interestingly back then you could purchase items that were not available in the US....Again..., I am sick thinking about the fact that I basically GAVE them away!!!! Loved seeing your vintage items... Does Gucci repair like LV does?

Yes, they do repairs.
I preferred the brown/beige, but I still have a Continental wallet, and a duffel bag in the navy.

What about the Disco? Did you sell it? This video somewhat implied that you’ve never had other Guccis or any in leather. I have the Disco in black and love it!

I love Gucci. I think I want a vintage 80's piece for my first item. I panic less when they are preloved. Lol. I love the coated canvas. I watched a really cool documentary on Gucci. I'm not sure, but it stated they were the first fashion house to create coated canvas handbags. Apparently leather was too hard to come by in WW2, so they repurposed ship sails and created the signature GG print. I recently took my DNA test and found out I have a lot of Greek and Italian. I always grew up thinking I was just English and Syrian. I'm also an Opera Singer by profession, so anything Italian I'm drawn too.

Hi! Unfortunately, unlike many of its luxury designer counterparts, Gucci does not include date codes that can decipher the year a bag was made. This is very frustrating, I agree. There are some websites that give you clues about the bag to help you determine the likelihood of which general decade your bag was made. Try googling "How to determine what year my Gucci bag was made" and see what you find that might help. Good luck!

Hi! Actually, I bought my Gucci Ophidia at the Gucci counter of a large department store called Lazarus in Indianapolis. I went to Purdue University in W. Lafayette, IN at the time. I had never been in a stand alone Gucci store at that time. Sorry I can't help you more. Take care.

Is the canvas on those Gucci bags waterproof?
Yes, I believe they are, for the most part! The older (80's) Gucci fabric was coated in a a shiny substance and water ran right off! The newer ophidia Gucci bag I got is not like that.

Please keep the vintage gucci bags. All you need to do is get them refurbished. I had an Ophidia that I gave to a family member and now I regret it so much!😢
