As Japanese metal has taken over my playlist I have learned that understanding the language isn't an impediment to enjoying music. Seeing the voice as an instrument not solely as a delivery of a songs story. That is not to discount lyrics at all by saying that, just that music can be enjoyed still without knowing the meaning of it's lyricist's words.

This is several centuries of musical legacy. Especially thst ending. Its not really a part of the "song", but an exploration of the "raaga" in which the whole composition is based. Greetings from Pakistan. Well that was an amazing reaction! Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a classically trained singer and arguably one of the best in the field. Please never ever worry about blocking / strikes / copyright issues whenever yourself are reacting to Coke studio songs because the objective of Coke studio is to share music to all parts of the globe. Well with this fantastic reaction, yourself immediately added one more subscriber to the channel with the expectations that such brilliant reactions to coke studio Pakistan sessions would continue. I am sure yourself will never regret it. There are already 14 coke studio seasons available with over 300 songs. I believe Coke studio season 15 is expected shortly in this year. Please do check out the lyrics since English translation is available, which is very easy to read and one can further enjoy it as well. If yourself are into some high quality songs, please do consider reacting to Rang by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Amjad Sabri also from Coke studio season 9. Will definitely give more recommendations in due course of time. Best wishes for yourself and the channel. One of best reactions that one can expect indeed. With warm regards

“Sa Re Ga Ma Pa" ( which the male singer was using towards the end of the song ) refers to the seven musical notes in the Indian classical music tradition. These notes are equivalent to the Western musical notes "Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti" and are used as the foundation for creating melodies and ragas in Indian classical music. Each note is represented by a syllable, and they are often sung in sequence to practice vocal music and to tune instruments.

    English rendition
We’ve never seen one with such beauty as she
Hers is the beauty of the sculptured idols of Ajanta
Her beauty has bewitched our gaze
Her beauty is an alluring song
Her beauty is a heady fragrance
Hers is the beauty of scented moonlight
Hers is the beauty of a haunting melody
Hers is the beauty of a blossoming garden
Hers is the beauty of the first light of dawn
Hers is the most exquisitely hewn beauty
    Warm and smooth as sandalwood
    Pure and delicate as marble
It is impossible to describe that beautiful beloved
It is impossible to describe that beautiful beloved
Praise to her Creator! Praise to her Creator!
Praise to her Creator! Praise to her Creator!
Whoever sees her must succumb to her spell
Praise to her Creator! Praise to her Creator!
Praise to her Creator! Praise to her Creator!
It is impossible to describe that beautiful beloved
It is impossible to describe that beautiful beloved
I don’t know what enchantment your gaze wrought
My heart became drawn to you irresistibly
The bright dawn of my face, the dusky twilight of my tresses
All that was mine is now devoted to you
    Your eyes met mine
And ever since then a spell has been woven
I feel that I have become beautiful
    Praise to her Creator!
    Praise to her Creator!
Her face is fresh as a flower
Is it her face in its brilliance or is it the moon itself?
    Her face is sheer poetry
Her face has the beauty of the lotus flower
Her face is an artist’s thought and also its translation
Her face is both dream and realisation
Her face is some magical tale
Her face is both certainty and supposition
Her face is like no other seen anywhere
    Splendidly luminous, dazzlingly radiant
It is impossible to describe that beautiful beloved
It is impossible to describe that beautiful beloved
Praise to her Creator! Praise to her Creator!
Praise to her Creator! Praise to her Creator!
Whoever sees her must succumb to her spell
Praise to her Creator! Praise to her Creator!

So each note has particular note and name in a set of that thaat/octet in which the song is composed take base not as 'Sa'.
So he can improvise because he remember the name of notes along with the right tone of each note.
Its called Sargam and its really hard unless just cramming or remembering just for one song.
But someone with classical training can easily improvise because their memory is more in sync with singing

This fast music he did at the end, is called “Sargam” in Hindustani Classical music. They are singing pure classical notes in different arrangements. They do this so often (practice) when they are learning classical music for 10-15-20 years or so (or more) that it becomes second nature. Then they can belt them in their sleep, if they are good musicians. The Tabla ( Indian drums) players also have vocal notes to match the Tabla sounds, which are called “Bole”. Some of the musicians sing those notes as well ( of course fast as tabla sound is fast) which sound as if the Tabla was playing. Tabla players of course can also do that.

As others have said, Coke Studio is an amazing place to find absolutely incredible singers. I'd personally love to see you react to Nooran Sisters' "Allahu", but you kind of can't go wrong with anything from this show. I can't help noticing that the music frequently involves a pretty seamless fusion between traditional styles from India and Pakistan and Western pop music, while in the West all there's ever really been is "uh, I guess put a sitar on that bit?"

  • @Aa.2557

Such a great reaction, a reaction that truly gave respect to what it was meant to be, even though understandably it’s a different culture and space, taking its inspiration from the region. Your effort to not read anything and step into it blindly in my opinion made this video/reaction even more worth it. ❤
As far as coke studio or Nescafé basement from Pakistan are concerned, they are mostly do-over songs of the original versions (exception of the few each season and the latest season of coke studio - all songs were originals if I recall correctly).
Yes there is months of work, production and collaboration put in to it and usually a music producer is leading the project (multiple seasons), bringing the musicians together and executing the blend of things. It is claimed they are recorded live.
As far this particular singer is concerned, yes he is legend, trained since childhood, it’s a family legacy. The lady is more contemporary and pop based not folk music trained.
The idea of coke studio up until last season was to fuse the traditional music/songs with more modern and western style. In short, fusion of two styles hence the length of the song and video itself. Over the years the style, idea and concept has evolved.

Came across your channel aimlessly clicking about one late night. Watched a couple of your reviews of artists from the sub-continent.
Since your training is not in this genre and you're also not familiar with the language, it actually frees your analysis up to focus on the singer's skills, their use of vocal techniques and such. Your deconstructions and callouts about specific aspects are very much on the mark. You're good at what you do.
About this particular composition, it originated in a genre called "Qawwali", which has devotional roots, spanning a few centuries and also a large swathe of civilization, from parts of Persia to the subcontinent.
This is a more dulcet romantic rendition, where the "original" is more akin to Portuguese Fado power ballad (imo, at least). Arguably one of the best performances in the original genre is by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a late relative of Rahat.
