OMG!!! I don't think I ever knew about this match up. I only started watching moto racing about 1988 and started following Kocinski after the article about him or his TZ250 in CycleWorld or Cycle, or Motorcyclist. I didn't know he raced against Lawson and Rainey, and Shwantz...... when he was just like 18!

I was there that weekend. I remember seeing Kosinski coming into old turn three in the lead of his heat race with that Yamaha wobbling all over the place. I knew he was the real deal at that moment

We know what happen next. Rainey world 500cc champ. Merkel superbike champ. Swantc also one time champ. As well as kocinski both in superbikes and 250cc.the rest went well in local races. This video should b called b4 they were famous.

Kocinski was a spoiled brat and was notoriously hard on equipment. He blew up a 500cc bike after losing the race. Pegged the throttle and kept it there. I wonder if Kenny Roberts regretted promoting John. I met both at Sears Point one year and Kenny was courteous by John thought the world rotated around him......
