  • "The Mystery of the Brown Mountain Lights " is an episode of Carl White's Life in the Carolinas, which first aired in syndication March 21, 2015.
In this episode we travel with Carl to Burke County NC to explore the famous Mystery of the Brown Mountain Lights. These lights have been the subject of songs, folk tales, speculation, and investigation for over one hundred years.
    Sightings
At the 20 mile marker off Highway 181 near Morganton is an overlook that provides an extraordinary view. Strange lights have been reported from this site and others nearby since at least the end of the 19th century.
A September 1913 article appearing in the Charlotte Observer reported members of the Morganton Fishing Club seeing strange lights near the mountain. Soon afterwards, Congressman E. Y. Webb requested that the US Geological Survey investigate; they concluded that the lights were train lights. Later, Senators F. M. Simmons and L. S. Overman requested another more extensive investigation and George Rogers Mansfield was commissioned to conduct the survey. He attributed the lights to headlights, stationary lights, and brush fires.
    C. W. Smith and Les Burril, Retired, US Forest Service both report that they have seen the lights. According to Les, they looked like candles, then diminished. He reports that he has seen the lights numerous times. C. W. says he's seen them twice.
Daniel B. Caton, PhD, professor, Dept of Physics and Astronomy, Appalachian State University and Joshua P. Warren, an author and paranormal investigator who has spent 20 years investigating the lights since he saw the lights as a child, agree on at least two things: we must separate fact from fiction, and at least a small percentage of the Brown Mountain Lights are authentic.
    Theories
Theories about what causes the Brown Mountain Lights range from the paranormal to the scientific, and everything in between: gasses, electrical fields, spirits walking, underground military installations, headlights from trains, planes, or automobiles, and even aliens.
According to paranormal theorists as well as scientists, the lights are similar to ball lightening and they are extremely rare. But as one visitor says, "No one knows for sure."
What causes these strange lights? According to Josh Warren, Brown Mountain is a geological conduit for massive amounts of electricity that can trigger paranormal activities. At the end of the day, though, people base their theories about the cause of the lights on their own areas of interest.
    Evidence
Charles Braswell, Jr. is an author and professional photographer. He has invested twelve years investigating the lights, often setting still and video cameras on tripods throughout the night. On October 15, 2001, Charles captured one of the best known photos of the Brown Mountain Lights. He later wrote the book Are Those the Brown Mountain Lights?
Dr. Caton and his team have installed two cameras overlooking the Brown Mountain to provide a constant view of the lights. By sequencing digital images taken across the gorge, the individual frames are built into time lapse videos. Dr. Caton's team rules out possible misidentifications such as ATM's, military aircraft, or other manmade sources of the lights, and posts them on UA-cam.
What can you do to help? If you happen to be looking across the Linville Gorge toward Brown Mountain and see some unusual lights, contact Dr. Caton with the following information: date, time, weather, behavior (what did the light do?), color of the lights, and the exact location where you saw them.
Who knows? Perhaps YOU will help solve the mystery of the Brown Mountain Lights!
Carl White’s Life In The Carolinas is an Emmy nominated TV and award winning show in its sixth season. It airs throughout the Carolinas. Check guide listings for air times. For more on the show visit www.lifeinthecarolinas.com

I had an experience with this light back in the early 90's near Sneedville at Elrod falls. My sister and I , her husband and my boyfriend were camping at the falls. My sister and I had to "take a leak", so we walked back behind the camper. I had my back turned from my sis as she did her thing. She said something to me and I turned to ask what she said and right in front of me, and I mean less than arms reach, was a red floating light. It was as big as a beach ball and had some type of liquid plasma moving inside of it. all of it glowing. It was very bright but yet not casting glow on anything else. Of course I screamed and my sister nearly peed on herself trying to get up and get her pants pulled up, and I was telling her to LOOK, LOOK AT IT!! And this glowing thing had to be intelligent for when I screamed, it shot up in the tree above my sister and then into the sky. They all thought I was telling a big fib just to scare them. The only other one that got a glimpse, was my boyfriend, later that night when we went to our sleeping bag and where we was laying, you could see the bridge, and I spotted it hovering near it and told him and he looked and saw it, but it was more distant than I had seen it, so he couldn't tell just how big it really was. Till this day my sister still claims I was telling a story just to scare them. I, to this day will still swear to it and swear this thing was intelligent because it reacted to my scream. I will never forget this and will take to my grave swearing it is true. Now that my kids are grown, we are planning to go back to camp and to see if we can spot this strange entity again.

Great story! My brother & mom were going to a doctor appointment back in the 80's in the foothills of NC. It was cold, overcast day. Right in front of the car a ball that looked like you described floated up to the windshield and right before hitting the car, shot off left into a field. It had the plasma light in like a ball of light, like a translucent glass beach ball. They both ducked because they really believed it was going to crash into the car window. I trust my brother, he is no nonsense and would never make up a story. They reported it and the police said their were sightings all in that area on that particular day. I want to gol to see the Brown Mt Lights, but then I think of the 411 missing people and lose my curiosity. 😏 I find it fascinating!! Thanks for sharing your story!! I enjoyed it.

If you sit still and quiet on the river in the early morning the orbs will come inspect you and test your spirit. I've been exploring the area for 25 years, and we see them nearly every trip within the gorge and surrounding areas.

My dad has seen these lights many years ago. He told me about them. Im so tempted to go!! Fascinating!!! The Native Americans believed the lights were the souls of loved ones. They've been seen for over a century.

I moved to Asheville a few years ago (only 1.5 hours away from brown mountain)… went to "wiseman's view" park last year to see them for 1st time. was NOT expecting to see jack, but we were blown away with all the weird lights and shit we saw. most notably, a big red orb that would keep appearing above the mountains (it would keep disappearing & reappearing at different altitudes)…… then we went back there a couple months ago. didn't see lots of activity like 1st time, but saw one thing that was fascinating: at first I just saw a blinking light, so I stared at that spot, lights blinked again and suddenly a giant white orb expanded from that spot & floated around. was unreal.... brown mountain is only place I have ever experienced inexplicable phenomena like this... made quite an impression on me. going back for visit #3 real soon...

I just went tonight to an overlook that has a perfect view of Brown Mountain. That red orb you describe is EXACTLY what we saw. It kept starting at the west side of the mountain and would move to the east side, rising and falling, only to disappear. Then, always after a few minutes, it would reappear on the west and repeat.

Someone please help me. Do kids go on field trips at night to see the lights? I forgot all about ever seeing the lights until now. I'm feeling really freaked out too because I'm very active in the UFO community. That's not something someone like me forgets. My husband went to the same school ol and was one grade ahead. He doesn't remember a field trip like that. I saw the words "Stephenville lights" a bit ago and it instantly reminded me of the brown mountain lights, that I had seen and forgot existed. Then the memories flooded and I remembered the field trip where I saw the lights and remembered the other times I had been there and seen them. I remember each kid sitting alone so they could have a window seat to see the lights. My husband pointed out that it must not have been many kids on the trip then. A field trip at night, where we just happened to get lucky and actually see the lights. What are the odds of that? I'm hoping someone else from the area will remember taking a night trip to see the lights because I'm having this weird feeling that I forgot all about the lights immediately after they happened and just now remembered. I feel anxious and sick. No other random memory has done this to me. It's not ball lightning. I remember the lights. I remember they are nothing like ball lightning. I once saw them on a trip with my mother before she died as well. I didn't see them with her. I was all alone. Why do I remember how alone I was? It was right before my mother died. I remember everything about that time. How could I forget this? I'm starting to question my sanity because as i type this I'm remembering other things I'm not even going to type because no one will take me seriously.

One of these lights appeared about 3 feet from me back in 1986. I had gone there with a fine lass to enjoy the sights from one of the cliffs late one moonless night. ;) After about being there about 45 minutes we saw a light behind a bush beside our sleeping bag. It appeared out of nowhere and looked as if someone was standing behind a bush with a flashlight. My anger arose while thinking that some pervert was spying on us. I got up and approached the stranger with the intent of putting some boot to his backside. But things quickly got stranger than I had bargained for! As I approached the light behind the bush (and it was a thin bush by the way with a sparse amount of leaves.) I was about an arm's length away. And as if knowing I was approaching, the light turned. It looked as if that eerie stranger turned to his left side and walked away. The light went out as if it was a flashlight, turning its beam in the opposite direction. At this moment chills crawled up the back of my neck. I could feel the hair on my neck stand up. I felt the goosebumps ripple across my arms. Because what was on the other side of the bush was empty air! And a 1-mile drop off of the side of the mountain. At this point, I had lost all interest in my other activities. I said "darling" gets cha back clothes on!!! We are outa here!!! In a semi-state of undress, we scrambled to the tiny path back up to the main viewing area at Wiseman's View. We left there as fast as we could! This is a true story. If you do not believe me, then go there and test it yourself. I never went back there again. It has been almost 30 years ago. I still get goosebumps when I tell this story, even right now! If you go there, don't say I did not warn you!!!

Since paranormal things are simply not existing the cause must be scientific and explainable. As usual people like to invent and to pump up urban legends and never seriously investigate the possible causes. There is nothing paranormal there is an explanation to everything you just have to find out what is the cause.

The lights are real. I have saw them on two occasions. Once in the distance and once less than 50 yards away.I went to investigate but there is no way that a human could have been standing in the location that I Saw the light. I don't know what caused the lights but I can tell you right now that it is not human or anything that we will understand anytime soon or ever.

I am from New Mexico living in Albuquerqe. Back in 1984-85? I saw a light similar to the Brown Mountain light at sunset over the west Mesa of Albuquerque, thinking it was an airline coming in for a landing at the airport. However, after several minutes, I noticed the light was still there. Then I saw the light go out as an airliner was approaching to land. Short time later the light came back on over the it's original position; A friend and I watched it for nearly half hour and would intermittently dim and come back to full brightness as aircraft would come in to land. It is still a mystery that has baffled me, even as the sun had set!

I read that when Nancy Ward Cherokee and beloved woman died, a light came out of her body and took the shape of a swan and flew to the heavens. I don't know if its accurate, but that's what I read. The Eastern Band of Cherokee have a star on their flag, their legend is that they came from the stars. Technically we did, bacteria on meteorites.

Some mysterious lights(like a fireball) used to roam in the mountains in our village in LADAKH. I have seen them myself many times when I was a kid(1995_2000).
those areas were up in the mountains and not accessible to vehicles.
It may have been some people wandering in the mountains but on a freezing winter night when temp drops below 25' C who the hell would be crazy enough to traverse through the snow up in the mountains without any purpose.
Further those lights used to move at a constant speed (not possible for a human walking on foot through a rough terrain) and at some point It would split in two and proceed in different directions.
I have not seen them for the past 10-15 years and i am curious what they were.

I've seen rainbow ball lightning, a gold ball surrounded by a multi-layered sheen of translucent neon rainbow colors. The whole ball was basketball sized and from first spotting it was 35' up and it took 5-seconds to contact the ground as it fell in a slow arc. The ball was trailing a shower of sparks that fell straight to the ground as the ball was gently falling. I was no more than 75-feet away from the ball. It happened at 10:30pm as I was letting my dog out the back door. From my backdoor there is no-one, no buildings, no trees just a flat open field and it was a well moon-lit night so I could easily see that no-one was around. The ball fell silently and completely disappeared when it contacted the ground. I went to the spot were it landed in the grass and found no sign of any burn or anything out of the ordinary. This happened 15-years ago.

I used to live on Old Indian burial ground in Hinkley California, in the Mojave Desert. It's on the edge of civilization. There is a invisible creature that lives there. I've seen it in a Mist shape one time moving through the house (when I live there). This thing likes to come out mostly at night time. It will stomp and bang on the ceilings. There will be dust flying, the ceilings bowing down, lights flickering off and on & such a loud noise from the banging, it will shake fear into you! As loud as a 12 gauge shotgun! There have been dish rags and knives chase people. the rag wrap around their throat, couches come up off the ground while I was sitting on it with 3 other people. The couch jumped off of the floor when the fourth person got up to walk away, the couch pinned them to the floor. 3 grown man could not lift the couch off my cousin. She was there for over 5 minutes.
Now of course I don't expect any scientists to believe me!
So please, I challenge any scientist, ANYWHERE! go and document what goes on there. When we lived there between 1976 and 1981, my mother was going to the local community college in Barstow California. Her and her professor at the time, after months of research, came to the conclusion that this property is built over old ancient burial ground. There are old ancient Indian pictographs in the nearby mountains. They are protected by the federal government . There is also a military base not too far from there. ( China Lake US Naval test weapon base). It had a lot of Indian history in that area but, because it is now a military base, no one is allowed there.

I think maybe it's a natural phenomenon from the minerals in the area. Some crystals and stones can cause light when rubbed together. Or maybe charged particles in the atmosphere caused by something similar.

I was with my sister and brotherenlaw we wer siten at a 4 lane intersection when lightning hit the road on the right and roled and roled in front of us to the left and went down a manhole it was about 3 ft. across and all sparkes like a plasma light or ball .never forget 45 years ago.

I've seen them from the hills near Lake Lure myself and three others were with me and I was a meteorologist and was baffled. lit up the entire area. I was near the top of the mountain, and facing the peak, late at night, Nov. 2018. I was shocked and stood up from my chair. I was snowed in in a blizzard for 3 days with no power in the entire county. There was not an artificial light source within 10 miles. I remember saying immediately, "thats the only thing I've ever seen that I could never explain."

Hi guys. I`m surfing the web trying to find similarities on what I see on my property in NC. Looking for rational explanations. I`ve bought some real estates in SW of NC, the G. Smoky Mountains in the last 10 years, as vacation retreat and future retirement place. This covid thing made me stay in NC most of this year so it happened I (and other members of my family) saw more frequently the hard to explain phenomenon. During the years, on sporadic times we've been to stay at the house, we could see sometimes, in late evening, lights hoovering 3 - 4 ft. from the ground, moving slowly between the big pines not far from us (max. 50yds. and one time not even 10yds.), not a drone, not a laser beam, not a light from cars because there's nothing behind the house other the steep wooded mountain side, no other house around, no reflecting materials in the woods (I've checked most of the explanations I could think). The light is most of the time orange and the shape, I say as a water droplet and my other family members range in description from diamond shape to spherical and also the color for some of their encounters was red, the size 10" to 12". We've learned to stay and watch it moving and slowly dissipating, it doesn't take more than 15 sec. Last time appeared two nights ago. Isn't a horror story, I don't try to spook anyone even there ware two different situations which can be characterized as not easy explicable, but I don't want to sound as a crazy lunatic so I leave those aside. If other people have a good explanation or had seen something similar please let me know. Thank you!

I own a house in NC on several acres. Infront of my house is peanut and cotton field about 10 acres big. I was sitting in my truck one night smoking and looking at the beautiful sky when i see what i thought was a low flying helicopter about 10 stories high hovering over the field. It moved slow and when i noticed i couldnt hear propellers or anything at that i stepped out my truck and watched this ball of light cross and literally dissipate into nothing....still messes with me til this day

My family and I live about 2 hours southwest of asheville and we've seen them too, it was probably 10 years ago and I'll never forget it. At the time I lived with my parents and the house was on the end of a pretty tall ridge with christmas tree fields down below it on the side of the ridge and in the valley below. A creek runs through this valley with the Christmas tree field on our side of the creek and a strawberry field on my grandma's side. My family and i were all watching tv in the living room around 10:30pm, and for some reason my dad decided to look out the window and when he did he saw a pale red almost orange light that was hovering about 10 feet or so off the ground in the woods line that separates the tree fields in the creek bottom at 400 yards. He called us over and we watched it out the window for id say around a minute and it never moved. At that time we thought it may have been somebody trespassing so we called her on the house phone(you know we're in the mountains because we didn't have cell service where we lived lol) and she saw it to. It then dissappeared for a few seconds so we decided to walk out onto our front porch to see and watched for a minute or two without seeing the light. Then instantly it reappeared in the edge of the strawberry field across the creek infront of my grandmas house looking like it almost rose up out the ground. Anyways, this ball of light or whatever it was started moving off to the left as my dad, mom, and i were watching it from the porch. At first it was moving at what I would guess to be 5-10 mph, after moving at this speed maybe 10 seconds it changed directions and instantly accelerated to 80mph (just my guess from watching it from 400 to 500 yards away) and shot through the treeline into the chrismas tree field below our house. Without ever slowing down, it entered the woods and climbed straight up the side of the mountain behind the house. That was the only time we've ver seen anything like that and it was some freaky shit, nothing natural could've moved the way it moved through the woods and across rough terrain at that speed like it did.

Both my daughters would talk about balls of light that would come in their bedrooms in the middle of the night. When I mentioned it to my friend she asked her daughter and she talked about them I a much similar story as the one I got from my daughters. They are all grown women now and doing fine. I think if you want to experience anything magical you have believe we are magical beings ourselves and we have to be able to curiously wonder for the mere sake of the experience. And as always, it's just human nature to see what you are looking for. We will be there in August curiously wondering.

Encountered it this weekend while camping down in the gorge. Was laying in my hammock looking up at the canopy when I saw a light move in an intelligent pattern that at first I thought was a lightening bug. Also saw a flash in the sky but it wasn't accompanied by any sound and there were no more flashes that night. This was the same night of the earthquake in Sparta, not sure if the two are related but that would be wild.
The next morning I asked the two I was camping with if they saw anything strange last night (I limited any detail to rule out a mob think) and my girlfriend described verbatim what I saw as she too was in a hammock with no rain fly. Strange stuff indeed.

The object in the distance at first we thought it was a passenger jets headlight, but the sky wall cloudless! The object split into two one much larger than the other, the large one shot at an angle at great speed, the smaller on zig, zagged towards the ground and disappeared some 30ft above the ground!

Then they focused on my family and I, and they started to strobe at us as if they were trying to communicate. We flashed flashlights back at them and they continued to flash at us. But, right after we took out a phone to try and record it they disappeared, and that was the end of it. This happened in the summer of 2014. This lasted for a good 15 minutes. The lights have existed for many years but not always on the level that they are today. This is a tourist attraction, so the number of lights are in higher number NOW than what they used to be. Its nothing more than locals within the woods waving colored lenses throughout the woods cause this small town depends on the tourism. Yes, the plasma lights of gases and electricity exist, but tourists come expecting far more than one or two flashes every now and then, so how do you draw up more tourism to a town that strives for that increasing economy?

The big sweeping line of smoke and I hook formation looks like a Sky writer otherwise known as a smoke plane has dumped all of his load at one time in a banked sweep and the reflection from the city lights below create an eerie effect. Change to me somebody paid somebody to create a little controversy?

My late husband was from Blowing Rock, and he saw the lights all the time. Of course being a mountain man, he could tell a good tell, but since I lived up there and where we met, there are a lot of mysteries in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Hauntingly beautiful.

my experience seeing the ships coming to earth, they are different sizes and can do different things that, on our standards are not normal. But remember they are so advance that we dont comprehend some of their tec. I noticed they can change colors and shapes. but , i noticed they have a cloaking device, that sometimes has fail. they use this function like a cloaking device, they ship turns into a bright light. Ive seen them turn on and off. They are different beings that come from different planets. we see lights, but they are ships watching and studying you.

The only thing thats strange is that all these witnesses taking expensive cameras to observe cant seem to figure out how to use video cameras :p

Let's see your example of good videos in darkness. Videos have high frame rates that require bright light to expose the sensor. The lights are typically seen at distances too far for good exposure.

Actually just last summer. It was big news. The town of Marion, N.C. even had a Big Foot Festival. Unfortunately, the only Sasquatch I saw that day were people in costumes.
