Not sure if this is still active but my Atwood coupler gets stuck on my hitch .. on a yrailer that's been sitting for a few yrs .. so I can get the top part to move away like undoing the hitch but under it does not move and stays pushed against my ball .. amy chance on why this would be?

It Rusted in place and need to be oiled and will need a hit with a hammer. The only other thing is it bent from a sway control ball you need a big pipe wrench and 4' piece of steel and bent it back out. The piece at the bottom that hooks to the ball should be loose when no trailer attached.

What would be the best security lock for this type of coupler when the trailer is not attached?

We use a simple master lock. I have seen they can be picked but if someone really wants trailer they are going to take it. The lock just there to slow them down.

The ball hitch feels very loose in my Atwood yoke is that common?

Your Coupler need to be replaced being it worn out. But you can take it to trailer center to have it confirmed you need a new coupler.

The “thing” that goes up, what is that and what do I do if mine is missing?

If you have missing parts the trailer has to be floated to a weld shop to have a new coupler installed.

Great video, thanks for the info. I just got my new toy hauler home in this blizzard, up here, & couldn't get the Atwood Coupler loose, so I pulled the pin on the front of the weight distribution hitch to get the tow vehicle loose. Now I know the easy way.

I had no issue with mine all summer now can’t get it to go down on the ball hitch. I don’t see anyway to adjust it moves back and fourth, this is just on a small empty utility trailer to my truck to move a zero turn mower. Everything else I have ever used at least has an adjustment. I’m at a loss

Thanks for this video. I just got a 2000 Rockwood pop up and couldn't figure out how to undo the coupler. I just pulled my truck forward a bit and was able to undo the coupler. I have very little experience with trailers so this was a learning experience.

my boat came off the ball, luckily I hit a bump going about 5 miles per hour, it had no safety pin, place for safety pin is behind coupler, not on latch ?

I just wanted to know what locks work good for this coupler

Great info, Brad. The first time I hooked up to an Atwood coupler it took me a minute to figure it out.

I have one that is loose and sloppy on the 2" ball. I cannot see any adjusting nut.

Nicely done Brad. What about lubrication of the hitch and ball?

    • @TaylorCoach1967
      @TaylorCoach1967  6 років тому

No benefit, just makes a giant mess. The only time we have ever heard of a coupler popping off a hitch ball was in Alaska and it was lubricated.

We're brand new to towing, and this answers a lot of questions about the trouble we've had hooking up and unhooking our Chalet pop-up. Thanks Brad!

Is the name of this style of coupler?

This is an Atwood coupler. They were sold within the last 3 years to LCI now.

HATE THIS STYLE HITCH! It's so hard to get it to latch/unlatch even without being on the Ball...........!

its fairly easy if you take the weight off the hitch (forward) i never have issues, yours also might be rusted

I absolutely love it. Trigger latch couplings have the exact same issue , only they hurt to use.
I can't believe atwood is out of business. They made a far superior coupling.
