From the interview with him in Swedish: Born in New York to an Icelandic mother, and an American father, (whose parents had emigrated from Sweden and Norway via Iceland), the family then moved to Canada when he was 7, and then finally settled in Iceland at age when he was 11.

It´s actually quite interesting that "riknir" knows so much about everything, without even knowing the person he´s speaking about. He is, like "porkpieify" also comments, born in NY and thus having English as the first and only language at home and with friends, naturally even better than his Icelandic, I know this "first hand", being one of his sons. Buy the way, and more importantly, why even bother to waste your and other people´s time by writing "facts" wrongly and anonymously? Things like that never cease to amaze me... Anyway, these are all comments regarding an amazing musician and human being that has incorporated all places and sounds to blend his own unique style of playing. Nice video!

Lucky you to have Island as a dad. Growing up in Stockholm in the 70's and 80's your dad always stuck out as a really humble and warm musician.
A vivid memory was my dad taking me when I was about nine to see him with Gugge Hedrenius Stockholm Big Band, and let me sit right behind him during the gig. God, did he swing!

Must be something wrong with me. Can't tell what this is. Oh, it is 5/4 ? Ok, if you say so. Hey, Pétur ! Haven't seen you since Iceland 50 years ago. You're looking good, my man.

Funny thing that, since he speaks both Swedish and English with a pronounced Icelandic accent and more often than not with a hard emphasis on the first syllable, quite strange since he grew up in New York.
