    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Danielle (Drew Barrymore) finds a creative way to protect Prince Henry (Dougray Scott) from gypsies.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Andy Tennant directed this Cinderella variant. The Brothers Grimm arrive at the home of a wealthy Grande Dame (Jeanne Moreau) who speaks of the many legends surrounding the fable of the cinder girl before telling the "true" story of her ancestor. In flashback, the story then focuses on eight-year-old Danielle, daughter of a wealthy widower, a 16th-century landowner. After returning to France with his new wife Rodmilla (Anjelica Huston) and her two daughters, he dies of a heart attack. Ten years later, Danielle (Drew Barrymore) is now treated as a servant by the trio. Fortunately, she has an encounter with Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), who is fleeing an arranged marriage. Later, when Danielle poses as a Lady, the Prince takes an interest in her. Inventor-artist Leonardo da Vinci (Patrick Godfrey), accepting the French court's patronage, offers advice to Prince Henry on matters of the heart. George Fenton's music adds an accompaniment to the lush look of this period romance.

This scene was inspired by true events. In the year 1140, King Conrad besieged the city of Weinsberg and eventually forced its surrender. However, the women of the city negotiated as part of the surrender the right to take away with them whatever they could carry on their shoulders. Leaving all else aside, each woman took her own husband on her shoulders and carried him out. Though his men protested that this was not what had been meant, the King accepted the women's clever trick, saying that a King should keep his word.

It's a reference to an event in Western Europe (which influences the film.) When invasion was really common, a bunch of cities were claimed and everyone slaughtered. One guy (can't remember his name) invaded a particular town, and said to the women "I'll let you go with whatever you can carry."
The women then carried their husbands out of the town, and the invader laughed so hard at their reaction he decided to leave them alone.

I love this scene--one of the best in the movie--but it would have been even more epic and hilarious if Danielle had picked up her dress (which is what the group assumed she would do), gave it to Henry (who would, of course, be puzzled by the move lol), and then put him on her shoulder lol. One thing I like is that Danielle shows respect toward the gypsy man by referring to him as sir rather than addressing him in a condescending way as would be typical in a movie. She didn't say something stereotypical like, "Give me a horse, you filthy peasant," or some such thing in order to appear more like a noble, she remained true to her father's teachings of respecting everyone no matter their station in life. Love the details like that in this movie!

Probably because the Cinderella in this movie is assertive and takes action more than the Cinderella from Disney who relies on a prince and a magical fairy god mother to escape her miserable life... In this movie she takes matters into her own hands, she doesn't have magical beings to build her a dress and a carriage, instead Leonardo DiVinci builds her some fabulous wings and the dress she uses was her deceased mother's.

Isn't Danielle technically a Princess however? 🤔 I assume that Queen Marie might choose Danielle to become Queen Danielle as her only Daughter In Law after Marie is dead. Danielle would make an excellent Queen, but as the ending of the movie, she was still only Princess Danielle and not Queen Danielle.

Apparently the invader laughed so hard that he said he would leave them alone. I loved finding that out.

If my memory serves, I think later on in the movie the bandit leader tells Danielle the circumstances that led to them turning to robbery (basically to avoid starving, as nobody would employ them because they were gypsies) and Danielle explains to Henry that "they are thieves but it is not who they truly are." Yes, it probably wouldn't go down that way in real life, but this IS a fairytale . . .

Disney should have thought of this when they did their “new” non-animated take on it. This is far better, more evolved than what they did ( by which I mean their character was old-fashioned in a bad way) Their cinderella is extremely one-dimensional and lacking compared to this more realistic, stronger one.

    • @doodlemunchkin2222

I beg to differ to be honest.
Although this is my favorite rendition too, the story of Cinderella at its core is about kindness, and the strength of kindness.
So the way the Live Action Disney Cinderella was portrayed works for her character.
You don’t have to be a rough-and-tough, sharp-tongued, sword-fighting female character to be considered brave or strong.
The amount of endurance, mental strength, and self-control it takes to remain kind and not stoop to your aggressor’s level is an impressive feat on its own.
Kindness and mildness isn’t weakness, it’s a strength.
So a moment like Cinderella in the Live Action leaving her Step-mother as she stands above her looking down on her from the stairway, expecting Cinderella to finally say something cruel back to her-just to see Cinderella turn around, hold her head up, look her in the eye steadily and say: “I forgive you”, is a bigger slap to the face than I think anything else would’ve ever been.
Despite how much she abused her she didn’t crumble like she expected her to, or stoop to her level of bitterness from what life gave her. Cinderella showing her she never lost who she is-a kind and caring person-the person her true family raised her to be - left her step-mother to sit there alone and contemplate how truly terrible of a person she is.
There was a mental warfare between them with her step-mother constantly trying to break her, but in the end, despite how meek she seemed to be, Cinderella beat her and won.
Showing kindness to someone who doesn’t do the same can be a powerful weapon.
Women don’t always have to be aggressive in order to be considered strong.
There are all types of strengths.

@@doodlemunchkin2222 I agree with you in that point, that kindness is a powerful tool and shows great strength of character, but that's not what makes Cinderella live action look weak to me.
my problem with her is that she has very little initiative to change her circumstances, compared to daniel, who at each turn does what she can and is in her power to do to change, and continue fighting (and I do not mean fighting in the fisical sence)
      Let's put two examples:
      - Daniel formaly meets the prince thanks to the fact that she tried to save Morice, perhaps the money to make that fall in her hands by chance, but she took the decition to fight an injustice in her life, in a non violent way, even at the chance of having horrible concecuences. And she continue to do so throughout the movie.
      - with Ella, on the contrary, every action that she does is driven by circumstance and I think the greatest example of this is that she is rescued from her stepmother by chance and luck, she does not make an effort to escape, she resigns in her room that she will not get out, instead of trying to get out the window or yelling for help, if it weren't for the mice she wouldn't have made it.
And that seems to me the biggest mistake of Disney with that live action, that makes her the sterotipical damsel in distress. because yes even in the animated film Cinderella is rescued thanks to the help of the mice, but without her instructions the mice would not have known what to do.
and therefore I think is why the live action is bad because it des evolves her and turned her into a one-dimensional character.

Re-watching (again) and I noticed the little groan of exertion she makes when picking him up, and it's a wonderful detail, glad they didn't edit it out. Strong as she was from being a laborer both inside and outside the house, Henry's still bigger and taller and heavier than she is.
I feel like if this were made nowadays or had it been made by someone less wise, it would've looked far closer to effortless for her to lift him -- you know, so we could all know what a bad*ss she is and how she Isn't Like Other Girls.
Danielle is a realistic character; it was possible but still hard for her to carry him, which is why she was hunched so far over, and she wouldn't have been able to carry him far. But she didn't need to, to make her point and get to safety. And she doesn't insult anyone, or even doubt the leader's word. She's admirable and relatable for how real she is.
[To be clear -- NOT hating on Disney Cindy -- I firmly believe she went to the ball to have fun and clicking well with the prince was purely an unexpected bonus for her. That her breaking down crying in the garden ("I just can't 'believe,' anymore!") shows clearly that her kindness, compassion for those smaller and weaker than her, and her sense of hopefulness were deliberate choices of behaviour and attitude. It's dang hard to aim for this every day, even without experiencing people treating you in the exact opposite manner. And her friends may have rescued her, but she *had* those friends because she ~made~ them in the first place -- and from predominently prey animals, which are timid because they aren't big or strong or scary. She had, at the time, nothing to gain by sharing what little time and resources she had, but her kindness came back to her, didn't it?]
