    Australian's can be real brutes, spitting snide comments all the time. But that's how they played the game. They say with Australia it's a more mental game than a physical one. They were the best in the world, with the best batting, unreal bowling but more importantly their perseverance and resilient mindset was second to none. That's why winning against Australia was special in every way. But they really respect the opposition when they play solid cricket. Because they know playing well against them(Aus) is no mere feat.

    Australians have been known to be one of the most ruthless teams since I have been watching cricket except for the team portayed in "The Test" series. Back then, the Australian players were like villains for every other cricket fan who wasn't Australian. They would use every tactic in the playbook to get other teams unsettled- mind games, verbal vollys whatnot. That is why they were at the top of their games, winning muliple worldcups and battering opposition to submission. Winning against Australia back then was considered a huge deal. That being said, if I put it bluntly, the team in The Test series was the meekiest of the lot. A little agression from Kohli and they all portrayed him like he was the villain. His agression is nothing compared to the ruthlessness of the old Australian team and you appreciate their tacticts if you view it from neutral perspective.

    The incident with Sarwan in the West Indies happened because Sarwan responded to McGrath's sledge by referencing McGrath's wife.
    Normally he'd probably roll with it, but McGrath had missed the first 2 matches of that tour carrying for his wife, who was dying of cancer.
    No one thinks Sarwan was deliberate in taking about that, but McGrath going off is understandable in the circumstances, I think.

      @@ravimusicuk I think you guys are taking all of this too seriously. Maybe if your team is losing all the time, you get a chip on your shoulder or something. Maybe you enjoy hating players on the other teams. If your team is winning, what's to complain about? I don't know what your team is, I'm just saying.
      The intensity of the moment during high pressure games is the excuse (reason) for when the players do it. Why the fans do it, years after the game has already ended, I don't understand. Usually the players are over it once the game ends, they'll even sometimes have a beer and joke about it. It happens in all sports, where during the game things get said.. and then after the game.. it's all good.
      Personally, I was never a big fan of McGrath. He was a very good bowler but was always grumpy. He'd even go after his own teammates in Australia vs Australia A games if they hit him for 4. But if there's one thing that's off limits, I would think cancer would be a good example. Rape, murder, cancer etc. For example.. if your wife was in hospital dying of COVID right now, I would think that it's off limits to joke or taunt about that. People can still do it if they chose to, but it's a pretty scummy low life thing to do. I would hope that he didn't know that she had cancer. I doubt that he did. I grew up watching this Australia team dominate and I loved the players but winning became too easy. I used to cheer for Sri Lanka and West Indies especially when they would tour Australia, they were my two fave teams. Couldn't cheer for England, they were hopeless. But yeah, I never sensed anything bad about the Windies players.. they were fiery competitors but very fine and mellow people. Curtly Ambrose was also a fiery competitor, very similar to McGrath but off the field he was a teddy bear.

    This video is a disgrace. I'm glad somebody has already explained in the comments what actually happened. The main point is that Sarwan deeply regretted what he said about McGrath's dying wife as he didn't know and that McGrath said no it is me who should apologise and he did and it stayed on the field until it came out later. I feel sorry for you guys having to react to a video with no knowledge or context about an incident that both men deeply regretted. Great video..
    McGrath was simply trying to get him to make a mistake, to get him off his game, etc.. this is a very common strategy used by players if they know that their team is going to loose.. McGrath was probably thinking, "we'll, that was worth a shot.." The Aussies are very competitive. :)
    If a bowler gets angry, it might help his performance; sometimes they are encouraged to be tough to the opposition. But if a batsman gets angry, it might affect his performance. That's why they try to avoid any provocation from the bowler.
    There are exceptions, of course. Eg. The Aussies were advised by their coach to Not to sledge Virat Kholi as it only gets him pumped up to perform better ( in this case, it was Sarwan from WI).
    Thanks for the video again. You guys have great spirit.

    Mcgrath was not angry. Thats the aussie team that most hate. Nobody got any problem with them winning. Its how they carried themselves on field. They did everything to win. Bend the rules, sledge whenever they wanted and very little action was taken on them as they were winning all the time. So their mistakes were most of the time overlooked. Ricky ponting would claim catches that were touching the ground. U already saw how mad he got when umpire made a mistake of giving Tendulkar out but called him back and ponting was furious even if it was not out. Now in this video, sarwan was set and batting very well but mcgrath was deliberately trying to break his concentration by sledging him and fighting with him and picking on him on every occasion. Tendulkar is respected all over the world not just for his onfield behaviour, but off the field behaviour as well. U can be a great athlete, but if ur arrogant and disrespectful towards others, people remember and after ur done playing, u will regret it. Thats why even if new Zealand was not that great of a team in that era, people still respected them and loved them coz of their good behaviours.

      This comment is legitimately full of shit and it's people like you who spread disinformation about what was simply an arrogant cricket team who sledged a lot. Sledging in an aussie context is almost never intended to be personal and is mainly just cracking jokes to break the concentration of the batsman. Everyone claims catches that are close to the ground and if you play Cricket for 20 years you're bound to get one that bounces before you and you don't know. You can literally point to many other incidents by other cricket teams doing the exact same thing with no nefarious intent. Ponting had every right to be angry initially with that Tendulkar decision, given recalling a batsman after they are officially out literally never happens like that. Ever. Everyone who played against that Australian cricket team respect most of the individuals in it, hence why fierce competitors like Atherton and Warne remain to be great friends etc. etc.
      That's not to say Mcgrath was a bit of a spiky bloke when bowling, but people contort these things into "bending the rules" and going beyond the spirit of the game. Ridiculous

There is a reason that sandpaper happened to the Aussies and not any other team. That's my opinion if you don't like it I don't care and it doesn't make a difference.

    McGrath, one of the greatest bowlers of all time, always did very badly when he let him get upset. It happened time and again that he'd start sledging and get angry, and his bowling would go off. Additionally, the team were probably pretty tense when the potential to lose a game against a historic score (yet again) became apparent.

    No idea of the background in this if anything happened between McGrath & Sarwan in that match or series, but you guys need to know that AUS has had a bad reputation for sledging their opponents (sometimes said to be gone too far) for decades now & probably that's the reason why when sandpapergate happened most Cricket fans (including many AUS fans) responded with anger. May be after the tearful press conferences of Smith & Warner a lot of that anger somewhat melted down & many fans thought may be the 12 months suspension from both International & Domestic Cricket was a bit too harsh (may be it was, may be it wasn't, I personally would've liked to see something productive, something like community service by making them work in Cricket promotion & training in Associate nations in EAP region & underprivileged communities in AUS).

    The West Indies dominated international cricket for 20yrs from about the late 70s to the late 90s. Although they regularly beat other international teams they were loved and respected by fans throughout the world because of the way they played, shear talent and skill generally without a culture of verbal abuse towards their opponents as seen in the doco, Fire in Babylon.
    Australia dominated world cricket for about a 15yr period from the late 90s and throughout the first decade of the 2000s. Defeating teams with skill and talent also but were notoriously known for sledging and verbal abuse towards their opponents as a demoralizing tactic. This behaviour didn't endear them to a lot of international fans however.
    Sledging has generally been apart of Australian teams of the modern era from about the 1970s through to "Sandpaper Gate"2019. But the backlash at home and internationally from that cheating scandal forced the Aus. Cricket Board to finally address this behaviour . When you have a team culture of abusing the opposition and are not called out and held responsible for your actions, this win at all costs type mentality can also unfortunately be used to justify a cheating mentality too. "The Test" doc. series that Gabe mentioned is part of the teams' rebranding.

    McGrath's wife was being treated for breast cancer at this time and she eventually passed away from it. A very brave person and deeply respected here in Australia. Sarwan made a derogatory comment about McGrath's wife as a reaction to a McGrath sledge. The convention on sledging was that family was out of bounds. I think McGrath did well to just keep to pointing a finger. Australia like to dish out the sledging and some comebacks were applauded by them, but not this one. By the way, every year the Sydney Test match is called the Pink Test in honour of Jane McGrath and millions of dollars is raised for the McGrath Foundation which Glen created to honour his wife, which provides funding for breast care nurses for women dealing with breast cancer throughout Australia. The third day of the Pink Test is called Jane McGrath Day and everyone wears pink clothes! Players are presented with pink caps and the players use pink bat grips, pink wicket keeper gloves and pink logos on their shirts.

      A homosexual innuendo to a Windies player especially of that era would be a big deal and Sarwan, not knowing the situation with McGrath's wife responded in typical Caribbean fashion. Understandably, it really hurt McGrath bearing in mind that his wife was seriously ill and he lost it. I think most people would have.

    Here's my issue with this whole farce. Mcgrath like all the Australians at the time sledged Sarwan, Sarwan responded with a comment about his wife [who unbeknownst to him was dying of cancer]. Mcgrath then exploded. I'm Australian and I think Mcgrath and the whole Australian team is out of line. The thing that angers me and I actually lost respect for Australia at this time is if you gonna dish it out, you gonna take it. Who the fuck are you to dictate the sledging when you started it? Mcgrath was a disgrace in this whole incident. You fucking started him. He replied in a cordial manner. You are getting upset coz unknown to Sarwan, your wife is dying? You don't get to dictate that mate. I'm with Sarwan on this one. I'm glad they both apologized but Mcgrath's behaviour was disgraceful. His body language was over the top. Should've been suspended. If sledging is started, anything goes in my opinion. You don't start shit and then have the gall to dictate how the other person responds. Sorry I was ashamed of being Australian for this krap. It was embarrassing to see how this team used to resort to this mind tactics. Like they were willing to do anything to win. In a way I'm glad that Smith got caught for sandpaper gate. Now, the entire Australian sledging has disappeared from their game. In a way, I kinda miss the aggression but I think cricket is better for it. I do miss the aggression from the bowlers

    There is an underlying thought by all the white nations that non white nations are not mentally strong and consequently see sledging as a way to unsettle them. This is further compounded by the history of slavery and colonialism by the white nations on the non white nations. This anger and awareness of this obscene sense of dominance and superiority adds fuel to the non white nations' fire in interacting with white nations in the sporting arena; and cricket is one of the most clear examples in this regard.

    • @fog1632
      @fog1632 4 роки тому +1

      A very interesting comment and I agree with some of what you say but remember that Australia was a colony too and that explains somewhat of the fierceness of The Ashes. So in that sense Australia has a lot in common with the 'non-white nations' you refer to. However, sledging is what the Australian team has done to every team and no team more than England in any Ashes series. Whether we like it or not, it has been a part of international cricket since the first international games in the 1890's. Yes, the Australian team are the most well known for it and I suspect that their success through the 1990's and 2000's has resulted in a level of resentment from other supporters. But every team does it... except NZ because they are such good blokes.

    • @erdnati
      @erdnati 4 роки тому

      @@fog1632 I reckon NZ doesnt do it because they haven't been quite world dominant as Eng/Aus/WI *tongue in cheek*. Regarding Australia, Aussies are notoriously aggressive in the sporting arena and give their very best including "anti-sportsmanship" ways when in a position of authority in order to crush opponents. I have no problem with that. After all, sport'/plays' original function in society was to help prepare the regular man for conflict and war.
      It is this expression which shows its way and unfortunately is being discouraged because of the extremely sensitive western culture which is currently globally dominant. Imo, all except death, uneven playing field/rules or uwarranted injury is fair in any competitive venture: love, sport, politics, business.. including sledging.
      If a weak minded individual is weak, he cannot be made strong because there is no sledging; discouraged, intimidated, yes; made strong, no.
      A noteworthy point is that sport isn't only played on the pitch/ground/court "but also" in administration as when the WI were dominant, the administration of cricket increased concerns surrounding short pitched bowling because they were disadvantaged ironically as Australia did when the English devised the bodyline bowling against Bradman in the 1930s.
      In order to know why you are where you are you must know where you come from and if you want to change it in the future painstakingly persist in changing the present.
