IMPORTANT - Many of the “nice to have’s” that I brought up with regards to ArtStudio Pro actually already exist (such as docking the colour picker, more incremental brush sizes when using the keyboard shortcuts) etc… I was just out of practice with the app - it’s far more capable than even I know, making it pretty much the best app on the iPad in my opinion.

I'll have to give this app a try (but I'm prepared to see a lack of stuff I need for my kind of work). As an industrial designer I'm still looking for a nice alternative to Autodesk Sketchbook with sketch guides, rulers, path tools and such.. Infinite Painter is very close to what I want/need, but your cursor issue is exactly something that I miss when compared to working on a desktop with Photoshop. I hope they'll implement it soon. Very important for accurate and precise sketching that I need to do day in day out.

To keep Color panel visible just move the color panel a bit. You will see a small “dot” near the panel title indicating the panel is “pinned”. 2. You can adjust/disable Eyedropper cursor offset in Artstudio > Preferences > Gestures > Eyedropper Offset 3. We use very similar steps to Photoshop when resizing brush using [ ] shortcuts, it like like this: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-12-14-16-18-20-25-30-35-40-45-50-60-70-80-90-100-120 and so on. The bigger size, the bigger step. 4. You can use 3-finger gesture (like in Infinite Painter) to adjust brush size (drag left-right) and opacity (drag up-down) 5. You use use a single finger drag to resize the brush, just configure it in Preferences > Gestures > Finger Function: Adjust Brush Size 6. I’m here to answer any question!
Hey man! Long time user here, I've been using your app since 2020 for professional work and it's the only app I use for work, it's by far the best on iPad. I just wanted to say, a feature that I feel your app lacks compared to Infinite Painter is the ability to load up multiple reference pictures at once, as well as customizing the colour picker into a triangle shape. Otherwise, it's a great app and it's been allowing me great comfort at work. Thanks!
I've got an M2 iPad Pro 11" and the hover feature seems to be missing in Artstudio Pro for me. I'm not seeing anything when I hover with the Pencil using the brush tool. I do see some hover effects with buttons, etc. But no brush shape with hover. Is there a preference setting for it or something? Using the latest version (4.1.7 (857)) with iPadOS 16.1.
Hello! I love the app but I have a couple of questions/issues: 1. Double Tap Action for Apple Pencil does not work on my Ipad Air4. I wanted to activate Eraser that way. 2. Is there a way to make a sidebar visible while working full screen? 3. It would be useful to make Colors, Brushes and Layers panels smaller or size adjustable. In my case 1/3 of the screen is taken by the VizRef, so points 2 and 3 would make such a difference for people working on smaller ipads. Thank you!
@@aniag3578 In the iPadOS settings you have to go down to Apple Pencil and then turn on switch between current tool and eraser (if it still doesn’t work after that there may be a bug) As far as keeping the side panel open in full screen that isn’t built in right now. You can take advantage of the quick menu though. If you click on the artstudio button you can go down to the user manual and you can find a lot of info in there too.
👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼 Thanks for the shout, and thanks for the shout on the engine! I worked on/helped make the modern brush engine/system. We put a load of work into it. As a working artist who does also work in the software it was really important to us for it to be the best it can be. Oh, and if you just drag the color wheel around it will stay in place and not disappear! You should let me send you my brushes man! Some are built into the software by default, but there’s a lot of others in the main set. They were built in unison with the creation of the modern engine. A lot of ASP users/concept artist use them and I think you’d really dig them. Let me know if you want me to send them!

One Important note for anyone who sees this and might be tempted to splurge on a new ipad for this feature alone. Coming from someone who uses Artstudio Pro as their daily driver. It's not that I don't agree with Adam about the hover being an amazing feature. But because the apple pencil is as sensitive as it is, if you just rest the pencil on the screen without applying any pressure while using most paint brushes, it won't actually leave any marks on your layer and will give you an outline of your brush. I use this all the time when doing digital painting to do precisely what Adam is talking about. Rest the pencil over the point where I want to make a mark to compare the outline to the point I want make the mark, scale the brush up or down using three finger swipe till its the right size, and paint. It does take a little getting used to, at least it did for me, but once you get the hang of it and find the right brush settings; it doesn't feel all that different to a hovering outline. I think the hovering outline is a great addition to the ipad, but I don't think it is worth upgrading to a new device, unless you were already in the market for one or have enough money to throw around willy-nilly. That's my two cents at any rate.
Awesome, glad it works just right! About screen protectors: when I was looking for one, I noticed only films worked reliably, not glass protectors. Soft films are apparently thin enough to make sure you get something you can work on
The dev for Art Studio Pro implemented a three finger swipe for brush size a bit like infinite painter which works well. Only drawback is the preview position moves to your non-drawing hand. With the universal control features on Mac I actually now mostly use my Mac keyboard for my drawing apps anyway (so minimal touching of screen except for zoom/pan etc...), but good to know you have both options.
Support for the Apple Pencil Hover might already be in Infinite Painter as well. The setting to draw the brush cursor at size is individual to each brush. In Procreate this is a global option. Options to see the brush outline have been around for a while and work fine on older iPad Pros. The older iPads aren't able to detect tilt in a hover and you can't practice your stroke. But they do show the accurate boundaries of the brushes.
I have the BELLEMOND KENT PAPER TYPE for about 6 months now. I like it so much! Very smooth paper feeling, without scratches. After cleaning it every 2-3 weeks with a damp soft cloth it's everytime like new. I have no issues that it's permanent on the screen as I use my iPad just for illustration work.
Regarding your first request about colour picker in ArtStudio Pro- not sure if I got it right, but if you want the colour wheel to stay, moving it a bit after opening it does the job for me and it doesn't disappear afterwards
I purchased the m1 iPad Pro a month ago and the Apple Store employees were nice enough to let me exchange it for the m2 no problem so I'm excited for this feature as a professional sketch artist!
I've had that stand for 3 years - it's outlasted the cheap plastic stands I had before and is very sturdy. The Galaxy Note already has the hover (I actually prefer painting on that small Andriod phone rather than my 11 inch iPad Air because of that), and Infinite Painter supports it there - it shouldn't take too long for the iOS version of the app to implement the hover.
I set up my Art Studio to adjust my brush size when I slide my finger vertically anywhere on the canvas and my opacity adjusts when I slide horizontally. It's a huge time saver not having to move to the little brush bar. I also set my color picker to be a long pencil press. That one really ruined every other art app for me. Not having to pick up my pencil to color pick is ALMOST as good as a hotkey. ASP is the only art app I can use on ipad now!
I could really use help and advice doing exactly that set up I want to understand why it’s so helpful to paint that way I’ve only ever painted with iPad digitally so I gave up when I couldn’t do what I was needing then I found Eldar Zark perfect oils for procreate and that helped a lot but still many issues and I can’t get the brushes to port to other apps well if at all and even got his ps versions as well but idk I’ve given up in frustration so many times it’s killed me for decades not getting into digital
So I'm not a painter, but I make math tutorials. The trade off of iPad no cursor but looking at where I'm actually writing vs something like bamboo Wacom on desktop with a cursor but looking at screen rather then my actual pen tip has been such an obsession for me that I didn't think anyone else ever cared about 😅. Your passion on the topic is appreciated. Unfortunately for me I have an iPad 10.5" with apple pencil 1. Maybe time to upgrade!
For anyone deciding to buy the Pen Tips 2 (those are the new ones that you can screw on like the official apple pencil tips) be carefull!.. I kickstarted them and also added their magnet screen protector, and within MINUTES the pen tips were worn out. Apparently they don't work well with screen protectors. Anyway, thanks for the review! I also love ArtStudioPro but I don't think I can afford a new Ipad unfortanetly.. 😥
I recently bought the same stand! I really love it, it's the perfect blend of a traditional angled drawing board with a modern tablet stand. I'ce been bringing it to uni to do all my ipad work as well as using it with a small sketchbook too. It was £44 GBP in my country, but worth it. My ipad is the 2021 model, and I'm not wealthy, so I still really don't feel like it's enough of a change to warrent an upgrade, even with the hover, which would be awesome. I have heard that the M1 ipads could potentially be updated down the line to implement the hover though. While I have my doubts Apple would release such an update, my hope is that someone figures out how to make a third party program to do it anyway.
ArtStudio Pro is my fav tool for painting. I ditched Procreate out of my Sortiment because the UI is a really workflow killer and it’s canvas is always trimming the layer if the layer is dragged out of view. Also the brush Panels feels outdated and really heavy. In ArtStudio is it great to have all panels open just for quick changing the needed color or brush. 🎉
I am still fairly early in my art development but I totally understand and echo your excitement for this development and I am very tempted when next payday hits to grab Art Studio Pro now. I have been struggling so much working in other apps finding good blending and brushes that feel intuitive enough that I can paint effectively. I've found myself largely starting my brushing of a color away from the plane edge I want to make to gauge the size and stroke of the brush then moving closer once I know where I am or begin the undo/stroke/undo/repeat loop and then fixing any unwanted strokes away from the plane. It isn't necessarily a painful process but definitely takes me out of the intuitive immersive experience of painting.
Adam can you please help me? I bought this program after watching this video, and the hover brush feature isn’t working. Getting very frustrated, please help thanks.
everything you said that art studio lacks, it already has, the permanent color palette on the screen, configure how the color sample behaves and you can use any keyboard to configure the size of the brush with the keys and even save how a brush behaves with all settings, including color with a single button, you can use up to 10 I think, different brush settings
My favourite drawing app on ipad is Clip Studio. I use icarez screen protectors as they have less rainbow effect, a little less grit and it's less than half the price. When I've worked full time on my ipad, which is not very often, I tend to go through one screen protector and one nib in about a week- that's with any screen protector. I also use that stand, its the best.
Im not sure if my magnetic screen protector is the same brand but mine works amazing. If you do use one you HAVE to have a case that goes around the iPad. I have a clear ultra thin case. It stays on perfectly. I can swipe up from the bottom and doesn’t come off. And I’m not sure what you mean by too thick? Mine is perfect never had an input not work? I highly recommend . Million times better drawing experience than just the bare screen. But detachable for when I want to watch something without the screen protector grain.
The Bellmond KENT paper is amazing, a complete game changer for me! And also the Parblo stand, been using it for years for my little Cintiq or the Ipad (thanks to Theo Yi Chie for reviewing it years ago) and I love it so much!! By the way, thank you for recommending ArtStudioPro in one of your video, I couln't use Procreate for sh*t, been trying for months and gave up eventually but then I gave ArtSudio a try and instant love!! Now I bring my little Ipad everywhere and being able to use the same PS brushes across devices is just so convenient =)
With the brush tool as the active tool selected, you can have the color sliders visible by switching the size/color options palette on the left of your workspace. It’s a little button that looks like a split screen icon at the top of that palette.
I love the Artstudio Pro app! Another feature I love is the ability to customize shortcuts. I am able to use a 8bitdo Zero remote (in keyboard mode) and customize shortcuts. This way I can quickly switch between my favorite brush presets and tools from the palm of my hand. I fit 16 shortcuts on it and my workflow has been sped up considerably.
In ArtStudio Pro you can move the colour wheel window a little and a little dot appears in the corner of the window which means it should stay on screen. Sometimes you have to do it a couple times cause sometimes it bugs out and still disappears the first time.
OOH I thought it was just me, not being able to paint on iPad apps, I do use astropad to cast my desktop on my ipad for painting on desktop software on mac tho. it's so good to know! thanks
I used to roll with Paper Like as well, they're good, but having used Bellemond's Japanese style paper, I highly recommend you test it and give it a go, the feedback and scratchiness it makes is phenomenal!
Love your vids! To take the color picker or any window in art studio and have it not close out you just have to drag it anywhere. Another really cool tool you might like in it is the paint bucket (you can pin it at the top next to the star or selection tool) because it can be toggled to paint LASSO which is so amazing for blocking in really fast! It has auto close which means you can draw shapes without messing with the selection tool.

I ended up not getting the new iPad, after a quick comparison with my 2018 11 inch iPad pro, I found it was almost exactly the same and I decided to save the money lol (the hover feature was not enough this time)

I’m used to Adobe Fresco (choosing image option in fresco i get only png or jpeg as file option so i assumed it’s the same in other apps that I didn’t care to choose for Image in Infinite Painter).
Thanks for the info, it is really helpful. The only thing I can think about this innovation is that is so obvious that something like this must exist in the ipad for illustration work, and it is something so simple to do to a programmer that I can understand why it has to appears until now. It must be a thing that exist at the creation of the concept of the ipad pro. Like you said it was something that someone who uses Photoshop knows and needs. I think that the need to sell new versions limits the great power of these products. At least now they decide to add this fundamental tool
I’m looking to move from traditional to digital and most likely will be the new iPad Pro 2022. I’m curious on how people find the 12.9” in size? Is the screen big enough and comfortable to work on? There’s rumours of a 14/16” iPad next year so I’m torn between getting the 12.9” now or waiting for the bigger models next year. Any input would be great! Thanks
I use a normal 10.2 iPad and it’s big enough. Hover is workin on procreate I’ve heard, I’m gonna be upgrading to a iPad Air soon. Storage and ram is important

I use a easel, the black metal kind. They are on Amazon. Its amazing, it holds the iPad, and is excellent for body ergonomics because it's so adjustable, I use it on a table or by itself. Definitely try it! Not a case but it's fairly portable mine came with a bag for it.

I got few things to ask: On M1 iPad Pro: use an actual ruler for daigonal lines and you get smooth lines if you Draw fast, but even with an actual ruler on the screen itself, try making lines in angles like 45° or 30°, you will only get wobbly lines. at first I thought it was cause of screen protector.. I removed it, and it was still there. changed to different apps.. even on note app it's there. Can you confirm it does the same thing with M2? There is also a screen bleed problem in M1 İpad where you get to see dark and white clouding around interface or inside videos (check it with Netflix video controls in a dark room) Is that same with M2? Lastly I am using infinite painter, pretty happy with brushes and UI customizing as well as selection tools. Also auto save option on with screen Timelapse recording while excluding any layer you choose is very good I think. I wonder if you compare ArtStudio Pro vs İnfinite Painter which one you like better and why? Why don't you prefer Procreate, new Photoshop or Sketchbook (from alias)? A personal comment about Apple Pencil: it's too damn heavy. when you try to double tap, you loose grip. if you use soft pencil cover, it gets hard to tap. if you don't use it, then your finger hurts after a while. Both Wacom and samsung pens are way too comfortable to work with. Yet, here we are trying to find excuses to move from m1 iPad Pro to m2. :C) I definitely don't wanna change my M1 till 14-16 inch iPad Pro line comes out. Thou this hover thing got me by the balls so bad. I was waiting on for that for so long. I also wait for better controls for double tap and perhaps touch strip move on Apple Pencil to come up with. Yes it does and you don't even have to plug it in! Sidecar works well over wifi but if it goes flaky you can plug in directly to the Mac with the charging cable. Works really well imho.
Great video! Seeing as this is a software addition and not hardware (according to online consensus), I really hope they will release this feature to the M1s as well, down the line.
Hey Adam, thanks a lot for your thorough reviews and art advice in general! I was wondering if the new pen has rotate on it similar to the Wacom Art Pen. Not really sure if you've ever tried that one, from my experience a lot of people don't even know about its existence, but for me it was a truly game changer! To be honest I cannot paint without it anymore and it's the main reason why I won't switch from Wacom anytime soon. It's such a shame that it doesn't come as a standard pen from them and that it wasn't updated in quite a while, especially since they just released the new generation of Cintiqs. Anyways, check that one out, I'd love to see a review of it from you! I believe it's such an important feature to be had on art pens in general as it makes the brushes behave way more naturally! I just hope that more people will ask for this feature and other brands will implement it in the near future. Thanks again and keep it up!
Oh I so get where your coming from, could never get on with the Apple Pencil and the iPad, I imported the very first Wacom tablet to the UK so long ago now its embarrassing and have used one all that time and love them, Pen in left hand and mouse now track pad in the right is the way I work, but even thought the Apple Pencil is cool could just not do or get on with it for artwork or editing.
I'm confused. Is he saying he paints with the tip off of the tablet? Or is he just scaling the brush tip to the right size/location, then returns the tip back to touching the tablet when he actually paints?
I wanted this for so long. I want to be able to mirror my IPad to a bigger screen when at home and not have to look down which defeats the entire purpose lol
I thought of upgrading from my xiaomi pad 5 to m1 ipad pro but the most basic feature doesn't exist? Good thing I learnt about it before buying. I thought this hover feature is a given to every modern tablet since even the ancient galaxy note 4 has it.

I mention this because I was having a conversation with a friend and he said that art is unproductive, and then said "I guess its better than doing nothing" in the same tone as someone telling you "whatever". I'm curious to know what thoughts you have on this.

For those looking for an answer, ArtStudio support just replied me. This will do the trick: "You have to turn on the cursor: Artstudio > Preferences > Interface > Cursor Shape" :D

Hi i just got the m2 ipad pro and downloaded artstudio pro. However, the apple pencil hover is not working? Do i have to activate it somehow in preferences? I can't find any setting there to do that though. Please help
I am amazed at how late apple has entered the hover pencil game 😂 but im glad you gave it a go and turned out as i expected, As an artstudio pro user. i think they did a great job embedding the pencil hover very well. but as an ipad pro 2020 user. i don't think i could get the m2 right now. due to how expensive it gets and also the possibility that Apple might release a 16 Inches pro model next year. But i will keep my eyes on a price drop. i upgrade my ipad every 2 years for performance purposes. and i hope i can afford it by the next year.
@jeffrey bankers exactly. Big projects need big power. If all I did was draw A4 images with a handful of layers, than yeah, M1 iPads are overkill. I think with the 16gb RAM iPad Pros Procreate is harder app to slow you down. You really need to illustrate a 48 page European BD Album at 600dpi with 20 layers per page to push that app, and some people do, and mostly with clip studio. Callipeg and other 2D animation apps at 4k you can hit limits pretty quick, and I think a 3D sculptor putting in a ton of detail in Nomad can push it. Most tech UA-camrs think making vlogs is the only type of professional activity out there, and people typing Xcode want iPads.
@@duntemdraws310 I draw on A1-A2 canvas sizes for my print out and these demands high dpi atleast 300. On my 2020 I can barely manage 330 dpi and I’m still struggling without an m1 or m2 iPad Pro specs. So yes an upgrade is needed and I’m far too accustomed to my iPad than using my laptop for my workflow it’s difficult for me to transition back to laptops. If there will be an iPad that is 16” then I’d say it’s an overkill but it will suit us off the desk artists.
Hi all so I bit the bullet and bought the m2 iPad 12.9. But I can’t get the hover to work in art station pro. It works in notes but refuses to in art studio. Is there a setting ? Did they disable it ?
@@blueorchid5971 I find it comfortable, but im a bigger dude with large hands. Id suggest you go to a shop and just hold it and scribble for a minute or two and see how it feels. Most of the time its resting on something anyway. I like larger drawing surfaces, as i learned on larger paper formats growing up.
Is anyone having issues with the hover feature in Artstudio Pro? I have the latest iPad and hover works just fine in other apps. For some reason it isn’t working for me in ASP. :(
Hey Adam or anyone who could possibly help me, is there a good app to make moodboards on mobile? I really struggle cause sometimes I want to make a dynamic board and turning on the PC just to create something in Pureref or PS feels so unnecessary if I'm going to draw traditionally
Haven't used it personally but I've heard good things about visref, has nice intuitive controls. Also Miro or Milanote might be good alternatives that are cross-platform and cloud based.
Deja vu! Now waiting for Apple Pencil Pro updates in apps like Procreate. May 28, 2024. And guess what? Again, ArtStudio Pro is already pencil pro ahead. Too bad new pencil not for m2 ipad pro. Hover improved with onscreen visual of brush even better.

I just wanted to say, a feature that I feel your app lacks compared to Infinite Painter is the ability to load up multiple reference pictures at once, as well as customizing the colour picker into a triangle shape. Otherwise, it's a great app and it's been allowing me great comfort at work. Thanks!
I've got an M2 iPad Pro 11" and the hover feature seems to be missing in Artstudio Pro for me. I'm not seeing anything when I hover with the Pencil using the brush tool. I do see some hover effects with buttons, etc. But no brush shape with hover. Is there a preference setting for it or something? Using the latest version (4.1.7 (857)) with iPadOS 16.1.

Hello! I love the app but I have a couple of questions/issues:
1. Double Tap Action for Apple Pencil does not work on my Ipad Air4. I wanted to activate Eraser that way.
2. Is there a way to make a sidebar visible while working full screen?
3. It would be useful to make Colors, Brushes and Layers panels smaller or size adjustable.
In my case 1/3 of the screen is taken by the VizRef, so points 2 and 3 would make such a difference for people working on smaller ipads.

@@aniag3578 In the iPadOS settings you have to go down to Apple Pencil and then turn on switch between current tool and eraser (if it still doesn’t work after that there may be a bug) As far as keeping the side panel open in full screen that isn’t built in right now. You can take advantage of the quick menu though. If you click on the artstudio button you can go down to the user manual and you can find a lot of info in there too.
👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼 Thanks for the shout, and thanks for the shout on the engine! I worked on/helped make the modern brush engine/system. We put a load of work into it. As a working artist who does also work in the software it was really important to us for it to be the best it can be. Oh, and if you just drag the color wheel around it will stay in place and not disappear! You should let me send you my brushes man! Some are built into the software by default, but there’s a lot of others in the main set. They were built in unison with the creation of the modern engine. A lot of ASP users/concept artist use them and I think you’d really dig them. Let me know if you want me to send them!

One Important note for anyone who sees this and might be tempted to splurge on a new ipad for this feature alone. Coming from someone who uses Artstudio Pro as their daily driver.
It's not that I don't agree with Adam about the hover being an amazing feature. But because the apple pencil is as sensitive as it is, if you just rest the pencil on the screen without applying any pressure while using most paint brushes, it won't actually leave any marks on your layer and will give you an outline of your brush. I use this all the time when doing digital painting to do precisely what Adam is talking about. Rest the pencil over the point where I want to make a mark to compare the outline to the point I want make the mark, scale the brush up or down using three finger swipe till its the right size, and paint. It does take a little getting used to, at least it did for me, but once you get the hang of it and find the right brush settings; it doesn't feel all that different to a hovering outline.
I think the hovering outline is a great addition to the ipad, but I don't think it is worth upgrading to a new device, unless you were already in the market for one or have enough money to throw around willy-nilly. That's my two cents at any rate.

Awesome, glad it works just right! About screen protectors: when I was looking for one, I noticed only films worked reliably, not glass protectors. Soft films are apparently thin enough to make sure you get something you can work on

The dev for Art Studio Pro implemented a three finger swipe for brush size a bit like infinite painter which works well. Only drawback is the preview position moves to your non-drawing hand. With the universal control features on Mac I actually now mostly use my Mac keyboard for my drawing apps anyway (so minimal touching of screen except for zoom/pan etc...), but good to know you have both options.
You can set 1 or 2 finger
Support for the Apple Pencil Hover might already be in Infinite Painter as well. The setting to draw the brush cursor at size is individual to each brush. In Procreate this is a global option. Options to see the brush outline have been around for a while and work fine on older iPad Pros. The older iPads aren't able to detect tilt in a hover and you can't practice your stroke. But they do show the accurate boundaries of the brushes.
I have the BELLEMOND KENT PAPER TYPE for about 6 months now. I like it so much! Very smooth paper feeling, without scratches. After cleaning it every 2-3 weeks with a damp soft cloth it's everytime like new. I have no issues that it's permanent on the screen as I use my iPad just for illustration work.

In artstudio Pro if you use 3 fingers up and down or left and right you can change brush size and flow without looking at the sidebar..

Regarding your first request about colour picker in ArtStudio Pro- not sure if I got it right, but if you want the colour wheel to stay, moving it a bit after opening it does the job for me and it doesn't disappear afterwards
I purchased the m1 iPad Pro a month ago and the Apple Store employees were nice enough to let me exchange it for the m2 no problem so I'm excited for this feature as a professional sketch artist!
I've had that stand for 3 years - it's outlasted the cheap plastic stands I had before and is very sturdy. The Galaxy Note already has the hover (I actually prefer painting on that small Andriod phone rather than my 11 inch iPad Air because of that), and Infinite Painter supports it there - it shouldn't take too long for the iOS version of the app to implement the hover.
I set up my Art Studio to adjust my brush size when I slide my finger vertically anywhere on the canvas and my opacity adjusts when I slide horizontally. It's a huge time saver not having to move to the little brush bar. I also set my color picker to be a long pencil press. That one really ruined every other art app for me. Not having to pick up my pencil to color pick is ALMOST as good as a hotkey. ASP is the only art app I can use on ipad now!

I could really use help and advice doing exactly that set up I want to understand why it’s so helpful to paint that way I’ve only ever painted with iPad digitally so I gave up when I couldn’t do what I was needing then I found Eldar Zark perfect oils for procreate and that helped a lot but still many issues and I can’t get the brushes to port to other apps well if at all and even got his ps versions as well but idk I’ve given up in frustration so many times it’s killed me for decades not getting into digital
So I'm not a painter, but I make math tutorials. The trade off of iPad no cursor but looking at where I'm actually writing vs something like bamboo Wacom on desktop with a cursor but looking at screen rather then my actual pen tip has been such an obsession for me that I didn't think anyone else ever cared about 😅. Your passion on the topic is appreciated. Unfortunately for me I have an iPad 10.5" with apple pencil 1. Maybe time to upgrade!
For anyone deciding to buy the Pen Tips 2 (those are the new ones that you can screw on like the official apple pencil tips) be carefull!.. I kickstarted them and also added their magnet screen protector, and within MINUTES the pen tips were worn out. Apparently they don't work well with screen protectors. Anyway, thanks for the review! I also love ArtStudioPro but I don't think I can afford a new Ipad unfortanetly.. 😥
I use the parblo stand for my Mobile studio pro 16 while using it as a cintiq, it's surprisingly sturdy
I recently bought the same stand! I really love it, it's the perfect blend of a traditional angled drawing board with a modern tablet stand. I'ce been bringing it to uni to do all my ipad work as well as using it with a small sketchbook too. It was £44 GBP in my country, but worth it.
My ipad is the 2021 model, and I'm not wealthy, so I still really don't feel like it's enough of a change to warrent an upgrade, even with the hover, which would be awesome. I have heard that the M1 ipads could potentially be updated down the line to implement the hover though. While I have my doubts Apple would release such an update, my hope is that someone figures out how to make a third party program to do it anyway.
ArtStudio Pro is my fav tool for painting. I ditched Procreate out of my Sortiment because the UI is a really workflow killer and it’s canvas is always trimming the layer if the layer is dragged out of view. Also the brush Panels feels outdated and really heavy. In ArtStudio is it great to have all panels open just for quick changing the needed color or brush. 🎉

I am still fairly early in my art development but I totally understand and echo your excitement for this development and I am very tempted when next payday hits to grab Art Studio Pro now. I have been struggling so much working in other apps finding good blending and brushes that feel intuitive enough that I can paint effectively. I've found myself largely starting my brushing of a color away from the plane edge I want to make to gauge the size and stroke of the brush then moving closer once I know where I am or begin the undo/stroke/undo/repeat loop and then fixing any unwanted strokes away from the plane. It isn't necessarily a painful process but definitely takes me out of the intuitive immersive experience of painting.
Adam can you please help me? I bought this program after watching this video, and the hover brush feature isn’t working. Getting very frustrated, please help thanks.
everything you said that art studio lacks, it already has, the permanent color palette on the screen, configure how the color sample behaves and you can use any keyboard to configure the size of the brush with the keys and even save how a brush behaves with all settings, including color with a single button, you can use up to 10 I think, different brush settings
I’m going to update my skills on the app - lots that I don’t know yet (albeit, still very happy with it so no complaints there)
My favourite drawing app on ipad is Clip Studio. I use icarez screen protectors as they have less rainbow effect, a little less grit and it's less than half the price. When I've worked full time on my ipad, which is not very often, I tend to go through one screen protector and one nib in about a week- that's with any screen protector. I also use that stand, its the best.
Im not sure if my magnetic screen protector is the same brand but mine works amazing. If you do use one you HAVE to have a case that goes around the iPad. I have a clear ultra thin case. It stays on perfectly. I can swipe up from the bottom and doesn’t come off. And I’m not sure what you mean by too thick? Mine is perfect never had an input not work? I highly recommend . Million times better drawing experience than just the bare screen. But detachable for when I want to watch something without the screen protector grain.
The Bellmond KENT paper is amazing, a complete game changer for me! And also the Parblo stand, been using it for years for my little Cintiq or the Ipad (thanks to Theo Yi Chie for reviewing it years ago) and I love it so much!! By the way, thank you for recommending ArtStudioPro in one of your video, I couln't use Procreate for sh*t, been trying for months and gave up eventually but then I gave ArtSudio a try and instant love!! Now I bring my little Ipad everywhere and being able to use the same PS brushes across devices is just so convenient =)
With the brush tool as the active tool selected, you can have the color sliders visible by switching the size/color options palette on the left of your workspace. It’s a little button that looks like a split screen icon at the top of that palette.
I love the Artstudio Pro app! Another feature I love is the ability to customize shortcuts. I am able to use a 8bitdo Zero remote (in keyboard mode) and customize shortcuts. This way I can quickly switch between my favorite brush presets and tools from the palm of my hand. I fit 16 shortcuts on it and my workflow has been sped up considerably.
I got that too! do the start/select buttons work for being shortcuts? Being able to open and collapse my timeline is amazing!

In ArtStudio Pro you can move the colour wheel window a little and a little dot appears in the corner of the window which means it should stay on screen. Sometimes you have to do it a couple times cause sometimes it bugs out and still disappears the first time.
OOH I thought it was just me, not being able to paint on iPad apps, I do use astropad to cast my desktop on my ipad for painting on desktop software on mac tho. it's so good to know! thanks

Adam if you want to maintain the color picker you have to go on Preferences, interface and disable "auto close menu"
I used to roll with Paper Like as well, they're good, but having used Bellemond's Japanese style paper, I highly recommend you test it and give it a go, the feedback and scratchiness it makes is phenomenal!

Love your vids! To take the color picker or any window in art studio and have it not close out you just have to drag it anywhere.
Another really cool tool you might like in it is the paint bucket (you can pin it at the top next to the star or selection tool) because it can be toggled to paint LASSO which is so amazing for blocking in really fast! It has auto close which means you can draw shapes without messing with the selection tool.
Hello Probably parblo stand is better for painting but zugu case is close to it and good to take with you in any place you want
Hey. You can already scale your brushsize i ASP with only using one finger anywhere on the screen.
You just have to turn it on first in Preferences > Gestures > Finger Function: Adjust Brush Size

I ended up not getting the new iPad, after a quick comparison with my 2018 11 inch iPad pro, I found it was almost exactly the same and I decided to save the money lol (the hover feature was not enough this time)

I’m used to Adobe Fresco (choosing image option in fresco i get only png or jpeg as file option so i assumed it’s the same in other apps that I didn’t care to choose for Image in Infinite Painter).
Thanks for the info, it is really helpful. The only thing I can think about this innovation is that is so obvious that something like this must exist in the ipad for illustration work, and it is something so simple to do to a programmer that I can understand why it has to appears until now. It must be a thing that exist at the creation of the concept of the ipad pro. Like you said it was something that someone who uses Photoshop knows and needs. I think that the need to sell new versions limits the great power of these products. At least now they decide to add this fundamental tool

I use a easel, the black metal kind. They are on Amazon. Its amazing, it holds the iPad, and is excellent for body ergonomics because it's so adjustable, I use it on a table or by itself. Definitely try it! Not a case but it's fairly portable mine came with a bag for it.

On M1 iPad Pro: use an actual ruler for daigonal lines and you get smooth lines if you Draw fast, but even with an actual ruler on the screen itself, try making lines in angles like 45° or 30°, you will only get wobbly lines. at first I thought it was cause of screen protector.. I removed it, and it was still there. changed to different apps.. even on note app it's there. Can you confirm it does the same thing with M2?
There is also a screen bleed problem in M1 İpad where you get to see dark and white clouding around interface or inside videos (check it with Netflix video controls in a dark room)
Is that same with M2?
Lastly I am using infinite painter, pretty happy with brushes and UI customizing as well as selection tools. Also auto save option on with screen Timelapse recording while excluding any layer you choose is very good I think. I wonder if you compare ArtStudio Pro vs İnfinite Painter which one you like better and why? Why don't you prefer Procreate, new Photoshop or Sketchbook (from alias)?
A personal comment about Apple Pencil:
it's too damn heavy. when you try to double tap, you loose grip. if you use soft pencil cover, it gets hard to tap. if you don't use it, then your finger hurts after a while. Both Wacom and samsung pens are way too comfortable to work with. Yet, here we are trying to find excuses to move from m1 iPad Pro to m2. :C)
I definitely don't wanna change my M1 till 14-16 inch iPad Pro line comes out. Thou this hover thing got me by the balls so bad. I was waiting on for that for so long. I also wait for better controls for double tap and perhaps touch strip move on Apple Pencil to come up with. Cheers

Yes it does and you don't even have to plug it in! Sidecar works well over wifi but if it goes flaky you can plug in directly to the Mac with the charging cable. Works really well imho.

I was wondering if the new pen has rotate on it similar to the Wacom Art Pen. Not really sure if you've ever tried that one, from my experience a lot of people don't even know about its existence, but for me it was a truly game changer! To be honest I cannot paint without it anymore and it's the main reason why I won't switch from Wacom anytime soon. It's such a shame that it doesn't come as a standard pen from them and that it wasn't updated in quite a while, especially since they just released the new generation of Cintiqs.
Anyways, check that one out, I'd love to see a review of it from you! I believe it's such an important feature to be had on art pens in general as it makes the brushes behave way more naturally! I just hope that more people will ask for this feature and other brands will implement it in the near future.

Oh I so get where your coming from, could never get on with the Apple Pencil and the iPad, I imported the very first Wacom tablet to the UK so long ago now its embarrassing and have used one all that time and love them, Pen in left hand and mouse now track pad in the right is the way I work, but even thought the Apple Pencil is cool could just not do or get on with it for artwork or editing.
I'm confused. Is he saying he paints with the tip off of the tablet? Or is he just scaling the brush tip to the right size/location, then returns the tip back to touching the tablet when he actually paints?

I mention this because I was having a conversation with a friend and he said that art is unproductive, and then said "I guess its better than doing nothing" in the same tone as someone telling you "whatever". I'm curious to know what thoughts you have on this.

I am amazed at how late apple has entered the hover pencil game 😂 but im glad you gave it a go and turned out as i expected, As an artstudio pro user. i think they did a great job embedding the pencil hover very well. but as an ipad pro 2020 user. i don't think i could get the m2 right now. due to how expensive it gets and also the possibility that Apple might release a 16 Inches pro model next year. But i will keep my eyes on a price drop. i upgrade my ipad every 2 years for performance purposes. and i hope i can afford it by the next year.

@jeffrey bankers exactly. Big projects need big power. If all I did was draw A4 images with a handful of layers, than yeah, M1 iPads are overkill.
I think with the 16gb RAM iPad Pros Procreate is harder app to slow you down. You really need to illustrate a 48 page European BD Album at 600dpi with 20 layers per page to push that app, and some people do, and mostly with clip studio.
Callipeg and other 2D animation apps at 4k you can hit limits pretty quick, and I think a 3D sculptor putting in a ton of detail in Nomad can push it.
Most tech UA-camrs think making vlogs is the only type of professional activity out there, and people typing Xcode want iPads.
@@duntemdraws310 I draw on A1-A2 canvas sizes for my print out and these demands high dpi atleast 300. On my 2020 I can barely manage 330 dpi and I’m still struggling without an m1 or m2 iPad Pro specs.
So yes an upgrade is needed and I’m far too accustomed to my iPad than using my laptop for my workflow it’s difficult for me to transition back to laptops. If there will be an iPad that is 16” then I’d say it’s an overkill but it will suit us off the desk artists.
Hi all so I bit the bullet and bought the m2 iPad 12.9. But I can’t get the hover to work in art station pro. It works in notes but refuses to in art studio. Is there a setting ? Did they disable it ?
Ok never mind I see that the default cursor is set to none. Just had to change it in the preferences to something else.
@yancke how are you finding it? Is the 12.9 too big?
@@blueorchid5971 I find it comfortable, but im a bigger dude with large hands. Id suggest you go to a shop and just hold it and scribble for a minute or two and see how it feels. Most of the time its resting on something anyway. I like larger drawing surfaces, as i learned on larger paper formats growing up.
Is anyone having issues with the hover feature in Artstudio Pro? I have the latest iPad and hover works just fine in other apps. For some reason it isn’t working for me in ASP. :(

Hey Adam or anyone who could possibly help me, is there a good app to make moodboards on mobile? I really struggle cause sometimes I want to make a dynamic board and turning on the PC just to create something in Pureref or PS feels so unnecessary if I'm going to draw traditionally
vizref on ipad is really good
Haven't used it personally but I've heard good things about visref, has nice intuitive controls. Also Miro or Milanote might be good alternatives that are cross-platform and cloud based.
I can't imagine using a program where I can't see the cursor.
This is software only feature. Like stage manager. Apple is gouging its pro artists for hover support, which Wacom has had for decades
Maybe - but I can say that they implemented it perfectly (so far)

Deja vu! Now waiting for Apple Pencil Pro updates in apps like Procreate. May 28, 2024. And guess what? Again, ArtStudio Pro is already pencil pro ahead. Too bad new pencil not for m2 ipad pro. Hover improved with onscreen visual of brush even better.
