Heeey Heidi, glad you enjoyed our video 😁 I had so much fun filming it! Yeah, I totally understand that it can feel weird in the beginning. Totally been there myself! But once you just go with the flow and fully immserse yourself, it's actually an incredible experience! And apart from pure entertainment, it's also a great way to learn new skills. I got to understand so much more about people after leading a few hundred people into battle 😂 Much love from Germany and thanks for your reaction video 😊
You did a great job, I never had any interest in LARPing by what friends told me, but your video about this specific event defenitifly changed my POV on it. Maybe my friends should go to those amazing events and tell me about that instead of those tiny events were they beat eachother up in some public park (like in the futurama episode).
Just wanted to adress your question about if people meet each other in these kind of events. Well, me and my wife met in a LARP event. (though we were playing in a vampire LARP) Our characters started out as bitter enemies, and there were lots of shouting and argueing between us. This made up conflict made us want to meet as real people...and well... Now were been together for 15 years and married for 12 of them. :)
This is really fun! I am a Wizard (with a long, real beard) and my wife is a witch ... so we don't fight, but support, help and heal people in need! :)
So, in my 20s I've been to two LARP events and as for being hit: yes, it's the honor system. For example: I was once attacked with my group while out at night. There were a bunch of undead and they clawed at my legs because they were crawling. I wasn't aware though that this counted as a hit, since I thought they were just trying to hold me. I only found out later that this was them striking me. Obviously in these settings, especially unarmed attacks have to be acted out and you can't just hit someone. So in the dark, the light touches to my shin didn't really register in my mind as being hit, especially not since we were really surprised and kind of freaked out at the ambush.
ah nice you stumbled upon that video. I find it very fascinating, its like people who didnt had the chance to become an actor or actress are doing LARP. maybe thats not the case but its plausible xD love it. friend of mine is doing larp and goes on weekend trips for something like that where they rent an old lookin building and shut off their phones.
LARPer from Germany: I've played my dwarf character for 25 years now. For a guy I'm fairly short, fat, and broad. I glue three beards onto my face with Mastix skin glue for that role. It is so fun to be taciturn, grumpy, and bull-headed for a few days, and nobody expects anything else from you. With a little bow-legged wide stance I can lower my height to be about chest height to most people. Maybe choose the lower terrain to enhance the effect of being shorter than (almost) everyone around you. Yes, it is an honor system in combat. Those people who can't stick to it will quickly find themselves ostracized for it. "Play it out, bitch!" /"Spiel's aus, du Sau!" is a fairly common saying among LARPers to people who can't adhere to the honor system. Usually you can take one hit on each limb if you're a newbie and unarmored. Leather adds one hit, chain mail two, plate three. But only to areas that are covered. Magical armor, usually displayed by a blue ribbon wrapped around the torso can be used instead of real armor, adding one, two, or even three hits across the whole body. Most thrown weapons cause one hit on contact with the body. Arrows do one and penetrate most armors except plate mail. Bolts from heavy crossbows or ballistae penetrate ALL armors and may cause two hits on a limb directly. With one hit you may still use a limb, but should portrait it as being wounded and less efficient. At two hits on a limb that limb is considered disabled, at three badly injured and completely useless, possibly destroyed. At three hits on your torso you are considered incapacitated and bleeding to death. If a healer administers life saving healing/magic to you your character can be saved. But again, play it out. Moan, groan, or scream to your hearts content when 'wounded'. Be dramatic, and fun for the others. If you bring a fun role to the game that others like they usually go out of their way to make it possible that your character survives, somehow. Especially if you kiss dirt during battle realistically after a few hits and aren't this super-though OP character that doesn't fall at all. OP characters unable to display a wound or hit aren't fun to play with. Even if you are wearing 40 pounds of armor (like me, when I'm fully geared up), give a grunt or groan when you take hit, stagger a bit, shuffle sideways, or even trip. Take a hit to the knee, even if covered in heavy plate? Go to the knee, complain, yammer, be a good sport, and everyone will have fun.

Why do you think you couldn't portray an ork? Turn the laughing from a bug to a feature. Even the most skilled warrior may face fear, but there is this one ork that laughs even in those moments and makes a name for themselves for being truely fearless.
Exactly. That is absolutely one way to go about it. Plus, in general, laughing is fine. One big difference is if someone laughs because he/she is having fun or if one is making fun of someone else. If someone is just simply having a good time, that is fine. .... pretty sure people in medieval times also laughed sometimes.
LARP is exactly like D&D, but you don't have a character sheet and dices, but a garb and spells or foam weapons and you don't tell the game master what you will do, you just do it. And it is not for watching from outside, but watching and feeling from inside. And so it is not like cosplay. Epic Empires is one of the best looking events and a very big one. There are two bigger eventes in Germany with 5000-10000 participants.
It's not strictly medieval (in general a lot of fantasy labeled so has early modern / Renaissance elements). There are people there clearly dressed as 18th/early 19th century soldiers with muskets. And some as Roman legionaires.
My favorite LARP idea is still the 4th of July LARP in Poland, where they impersonate ordinary Americans (*cough* White trash *cough*) living in a trailer park in central Ohio and celebrating fourth of July. And just like Epic Empires, the participants are super ambitious and are expected to spend up to six months preparing for the events. Unfortunately there seems to be no video clips from it, just a lot of still pictures, for example on their Facebook page. And all info is in Polish so you need Google translate. But I kind of fell in love with Poland when I learned about the event!

Well, what if I tell you, that I know several people who train their LARP acting nearly every weekend in summer as vikings on medieval markets? Not really rare around here! Each year there are bigger LARP events that are purely historical, too. Northern Germany... (the former viking metropole Haitabu is 40km south from where I live...)

You could make a character, that has a bad habit, of laughing, at all the wrong moments.
